In December of 1927, 12-year-old Marion Parker, who was the young daughter of banker, Perry Parker, was abducted from her school by William Edward Hickman.
Over the next few days, Hickman contacted Parker and sent multiple ransom notes. Parker agreed to pay the $1,500 and met the man in a parked car. When Parker paid to ransom, he was allowed to see his daughter who was sitting on the passenger seat. She appeared to be wrapped up in a blanket up to her neck, rendering her unable to walk. Or so Parker thought..
Hickman then threw the little girl out of the car and sped off with the money. It was immediately discovered that the little girl was already dead. When she was unwrapped from the blanket, he was horrified to see that her arms and legs had been cut off and she had been disembowelled. Her eyes had also been wired open. Hickman later admitted to strangling and slitting the throat of Marion and confessed that she was still alive while he disembowelled her.
Hickman was quickly apprehended and hanged in 1928.

BLACK SAILS • IX. | XXXVI.
2.01 "So this is the lesson… the pirates of New Providence Island are incorrigible, dedicated to mayhem. To attempt to address this subject is doomed to defeat from the outset." "It's not him I wanted you to see. [No mercy! Go all the way to hell!] It's them." 4.08 "Those are the pirates. They've inhabited the east bank, across from Springett Island for years. The governor promises this is the year he'll chase them off, but there they are. Seven major shipping concerns in the city here. In less than 10 years, more goods will move through here than any English-speaking port outside London."

ELVIS PRESLEY, RCA RECORDS ARTIST (Nov. 1955)
The story behind one of my favorite 50's Elvis pictures ♥
Tumblr media Tumblr media
November 21, 1955: Elvis Presley at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. RCA Victor Records purchased Elvis Presley’s recording contract from Sam Phillips (Sun Records) for a then unheard of sum of $35,000.
Here's the full picture: Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis, Bob Neal (his second manager, after Scotty Moore and prior to Colonel Parker) and country music singer Hank Snow at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN, after signing the RCA contract at the Sun Records studio, previously in the same day.
Let's read a bit about the contract, afterwards.
Tumblr media
On November 21, Steve Sholes, Ben Starr, Coleman Tily, the Colonel, Tom Diskin, Hank Snow, local RCA distributor Jim Crudgington, and regional rep Sam Esgro all converged on the little Sun studio for the signing of the papers. Colonel Parker came accompanied by a document dated the same day stipulating that out of the 40 percent in combined commissions due the Colonel and Bob Neal (25 percent to the Colonel, 15 percent to Neal), there would be an even split for the duration of Neal's agreement, until March 15, 1956. The buyout agreement itself was a simple two-page document in which Sun Records agreed to tum over all tapes and cease all distribution and sales of previously released recordings as of December 31, 1955, while the managers "do hereby sell, assign and transfer unto RCA all of their right, title and interest in and to" the previously exercised option agreement. The purchase price was $35,000; RCA undertook responsibility for the payment of all back royalties and held Sun Records harmless from any subsequent claims. Out of all this Elvis Presley would get a royalty of 5 percent as opposed to the 3 percent that he was currently receiving from Sun - this amounted to almost two cents more per record sold, which over the course of a million sales would come to about $18,000. In addition, as the result of a co-publishing arrangement that the Colonel had entered into with Hill and Range (who probably contributed substantially themselves toward the purchase price), Elvis would now receive half of the two-cent statutory mechanical fee and half of the two-cent broadcast fee on all new Hill and Range compositions that he recorded, which would be registered through his own publishing company. If at this point he were to start writing songs as well, or, perhaps more pertinently, if he were to start claiming songwriting credit for songs he recorded, a practice going back to time immemorial in the recording industry, he could increase his income by up to another two cents per side. Hill and Range, meanwhile, stood to gain an almost incalculable advantage over their competitors in the field by securing not just an inside track, but what amounted to virtually a right of first refusal from the hottest new singing sensation in the country. After the contract was signed, there was a picture-taking ceremony, with different configurations of the various parties involved. In one Elvis is flanked by the Colonel and Hank Snow, proud partners in Jamboree Attractions, while Bob Neal, to Snow's left, jovially approves; in another Gladys plants a kiss upon her son's cheek and clutches her black handbag as the Colonel pats her on the shoulder and Vernon looks stiffly on. In yet another Sam and Elvis shake hands across RCA attorney Coleman Tily. In all the pictures all the men are beaming - everyone has seemingly gotten exactly what he wanted. After the picture taking a number of the participants dropped by for a brief on-air appearance on Marion Keisker's show in the brand-new WHER studios. "They thought it would be great fun," said Marion, "if they all came over and we announced it. So they all crowded into the little control room, and we did a little four-or-five-way interview, well, not really an interview, just a little chat. And in the course of it, I remember, Hank Snow said, 'I'm very proud this boy made his first appearance on the national scene on my section of the Grand Ole Opry.' And he was being such a pompous ass about it, I couldn't help it, but I said, 'Yes, and I remember, you had to ask him what his name was.' That was a rather tactless thing for me to do." — Excerpt: Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick (1994). Chapter "THE PIED PIPERS: September-November 1955".
OTHER PICTURES FROM THAT DAY - NOV. 21, 1955:
Elvis was 20 years old at the time, which means he was still legally a minor, therefore his father (Vernon Presley) also signed the contract, as his natural guardian, which is why Vernon and Gladys are there that day, in addition to the obvious reason (a big moment for their dear son).
The 1st picture below: the Colonel, Gladys, Elvis and Vernon Presley, H. Coleman Tily III (RCA's attorney) and Bob Neal at Sun Records (and a cropped picture of Elvis and Gladys just because <33); The second picture shows Bob Neal, Sam Phillips and Elvis shaking hands across RCA's attorney H. Coleman Tily III, and Colonel Parker; the third picture shows Elvis and Hank Snow that same day (Note: Elvis wearing a tie pictures were taken after the contract signing at Sun Records. The pictures were taken at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN), and the one after that shows Jim Crudgington (local RCA-Victor representative), Elvis and H. Coleman Tily III at Sun - Nov. 21, 1955.

"Race me to the ice cream?" asked Gina.
"You're so on," Jack grinned.
Tumblr media
"Whoever wins, pays!" Gina called out.
"What?! You can't change the rules mid-race!"
"What's it gonna be, Jack? Lose the race or win the bill?" she laughed.
"You're evil!"
Tumblr media
The teens stalled at the store freezer catching their breath.
"I just -- realized something," Jack said between big gulps of air.
"Oh, yeah?" Gina huffed. "What's that?"
"I didn't bring my wallet."
Pause.
Tumblr media
Then they lost all the breath they had laughing loudly together.
Tumblr media
"I guess this means I owe you," Jack smirked.
"No duh you do!"
Tumblr media
Suddenly, the couple was interrupted when someone they didn't know approached and said, "Excuse me, kids," gesturing to the freezer behind them.
"Oh yeah, sorry," Jack answered. Neither Adam Green or Jack recognized their new step-brother.
Tumblr media
Jack grabbed Gina's hand and said, "Let's get out of here."
Gina stood still, looked down, and studied their hands together.
"Come on," Jack repeated.

A Memorandum on Marion Meade
A Memorandum on Marion Meade
This will be a nearly content free post, designed purely to make you aware of the works of author/biographer Marion Meade (b. 1934). Such is the scope of her interests that I am attracted to virtually all of her books. They haven’t all been slam dunks with the critics, but I simply love the topics she choses to write about. I’ll go by subject and order of my familiarity — Buster Keaton: Her…

Note
I know we live in a very different world now, but I find it concerning how the newspapers printed all these kids' addresses. Did any harm ever come from that, to your knowledge?
I feel like the concept of your address being private information is a very modern one. Any news story until the mid-20th century (and much later in small towns/rural areas) would include the addresses of the individuals involved. Even the smallest towns printed yearly city directories that listed everyone's current address and occupation. So I can't imagine anyone would hesitate to publish a child's address, as why bother concealing what was already considered public information?
Furthermore, the concept of stranger kidnapping - and 'stranger danger' in general - was not something that really entered the public consciousness in the US until the 1920s, and even then the vast majority of kidnappings were for ransom. It was something that happened to rich people, usually in big cities.
It wasn't until several extremely high profile kidnappings of children in the late 20s/early 30s (namely Marion Parker, Walter Collins and Charles Lindbergh Jr.) that the concept of a stranger taking your child would probably have even crossed the mind of the average parent.
Additionally it's important to understand that the role of small town newspapers (where most of the Dear Santa letters are from) was something closer to Facebook or the Nextdoor app than a source of important news. Going on a trip? It's in the newspaper. Having a small dinner party? That's getting reported, along with the guest list, menu, party favors and any decorations you put up. Your child built a particularly nice snowman? There's a reporter here and entire town will know before dinner time.
So is it possible that some burglar used a Dear Santa letter to target the home of a wealthy child sometime in the 1890s? Sure? But I can't see why in an era where if you wanted to know where someone lived you could stop any random person on the street and say "Hey, where do the Johnsons live?" and no one would hesitate to tell you.

As they approached the Marion Estate, Jack scratched his head and asked, "Any chance you'll need a study break like this tomorrow?"
"That depends. Will you remember your wallet next time?"
They shared another laugh about it.
Tumblr media
But the laughter abruptly stopped when Gina caught sight of her house and realized she had forgotten something dreadfully important. "Oh my god," she said to herself.
"Who's truck is that?" asked Jack.
"I have to go -- right now!"
Tumblr media
"Gina, wait!" Jack cried, but Gina was already halfway across the street sprinting to the front door. Turns out she is a very fast runner and she must have let Jack win earlier, he realized.
Tumblr media
She stopped in the middle of the road, turned to Jack and said: "Go home."
"What's wrong?"
"Just go home, okay? I have to go."
"Wh--?"
Tumblr media
"Thanks for the walk!" she called out.
