Mario Misconceptions: Baby Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Koopa Kid
This will be a new series where I discuss common misconceptions in the Mario franchise! This time I'm talking about the still very common idea of Bowser Jr. being the same entity as Baby Bowser, as well as the Koopa Kid from Mario Party causing confusion relating to these two.
Now, most seasoned Mario fans will know the difference between the two, but I will clear up any misconceptions here, with images provided, as the designs are often one of the main reasons people get confused.
In short, "Baby Bowser" is Bowser as a young koopa in the past, and "Bowser Jr." is Bowser's son in the current day and age.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the differences between them. Note that in older depictions of Baby Bowser, he isn't wearing a bandana, meanwhile Bowser Jr. always wears one, showing the obvious differences in their design. Confusingly, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time depicts Baby Bowser with a white (albeit featureless) bandana. This design alone is most likely the main reason so many have confused the two, since Bowser Jr. wears a similar bandana. However, Bowser Jr.'s bandana always features a face of some sort, whereas Bowser's bandana as a child has nothing drawn onto it.
Finally, I want to mention the "Koopa Kid" from the Mario Party series. Introduced in the first game in the series "Mario Party", they act as helpers to Bowser during the games.
Tumblr media
They appear similar to Bowser, but only younger, leading some to think the main Koopa Kid (featured on the left in the image above) was either his past self, or alternatively his son, thinking it was merely an early design of Bowser Junior. The name of the Koopa Kid in some instances is actually "Baby Bowser", causing much of the confusion. They are still called "Koopa Kids" almost everywhere else, however.
While it's almost certainly confirmed that none of them are Bowser Jr. or Bowser himself, it is still unknown whether not they are related to Bowser in some form, if at all. The Super Mario Wiki mentions more specific details of this topic in the image below:
Tumblr media
As one can see, the game's dialogue and naming has caused a large amount of the confusion. Koopa Kid's nature seems to imply they may either be split off from Bowser, like a copy of some kind, or simply just his son.
The main Koopa Kid's ability to split into three beings (featured on the right of the Koopa Kid image) as shown in Mario Party 5 may possibly imply the original's origin to be Bowser's copy. His Japanese description being 「クッパさまのぶんしん」 seems to partially support this theory, as 「分身」 can mean "one's other self" as shown in the wiki screenshot. None of this is 100% confirmed however, and is simply speculation on my part.
Koopa Kids as a whole have since stopped making appearances in games, most likely due to the redundancy of now having Bowser Jr. existing as the "Bowser's young helper" role. This is shown by the fact that any remakes of old minigames featuring them now replace them with Bowser Jr. instead. They may also have stopped appearing to not cause further confusion on this subject.
One final thing: "Koopa Kids" is a phrase that many official sources call the Koopalings, but this is largely phased out and is mostly used in the older media, although still used in other languages today. The Koopalings are not confirmed to be related to the Koopa Kids from Mario Party, despite the similar naming in some places.
I think that's all I really have to say on this topic, so I hope this cleared up any misconceptions on these characters and their relationships with one another! Thanks for reading.
Credit goes to Nintendo and all affiliated parties, and to the Super Mario Wiki.

Did...did Rosalina make Rainbow Road?
OK so Super Mario Party Jamboree is the newest Mario Party game (at the time of this post releasing) and there are these character-themed minigames called Showdown Minigames. Rosalina's one of the 10 characters who has one, it's called Rosalina's Radical Race, and the first section involves snowboarding, nothing too weird. But then there's the second portion of the minigame, and UH-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DID SHE MAKE THE MOST ICONIC MARIO KART COURSE IN HISTORY?
I mean...it certainly looks like it!
They even play what I'm pretty sure are four notes from Rainbow Road's first theme (sped up) once the players reach the second part of the race.
I saw someone else in the comment section of a now deleted video (Nintendo works fast) claim that the music at the start of the snowboarding portion of Rosalina's Radical Race sounds like the music for Double Dash's Rainbow Road. I didn't catch that on my first listen (I've never played Double Dash, alright?) Look up the clip if you're interested, do you hear it?
But anyway, back to the lore implications.
You know, this makes some things retroactively make a lot more sense, like her reveal trailer for Smash taking place on Rainbow Road:
Tumblr media
Even going all the way back to Mario Kart Wii, it would explain its version of Rainbow Road being heavily influenced by Super Mario Galaxy (other than, you know, cross-promotional synergy). It has Star Bits, a Launch Star cannon, both its course staff ghosts use Rosalina, it uses Good Egg Galaxy's theme as a countermelody underneath its own main melody, etc.:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So has Rainbow Road just...ALWAYS been hers? This whole time?
She did that?
That was her?
If so...
Iconic. I have no notes.

Annoying ways that people view the Mario series and characters Part 2
I think perhaps the biggest misconception that really irritates me is how "Peach rejects Mario and abandons him on the moon at the end of Mario Odyssey."
Especially because that latter part can be easily proven false if you just watched the ending.
People act as if this is the last frame of that ending—
Tumblr media
When it actually ends on Mario making that jump towards the Odyssey—
Tumblr media
Peach even calls out to Mario and says, "Let's go home!" It's clear she wasn't planning on abandoning the guy.
Tumblr media
Now I can hear you say, "But she takes off so quickly!! Before Mario can even get on!! Why does she do that if she wasn't gonna abandon him, huh????"
I believe Peach's intention was to abandon Bowser, not Mario. If she were to wait until Mario got on the Odyssey, then Bowser would've been able to hop on as well, with him being so close behind.
Peach wanted to avoid that, and she was confident in Mario's abilities to be able to jump onto the ship, especially with the moon's gravity helping him.
Tumblr media
Now, in regards to "Peach rejecting Mario", there's a couple of annoying ways people took this.
First, people act as if this is a permanent rejection; that this is it for their relationship. They're not getting together ever, it's done, stop shipping Mario and Peach, yadda yadda.
Y'all, just because Peach got a bit upset at Mario's impulsive actions, that does not mean that Mario and Peach's relationship is ruined.
I'm sure there have been times where y'all got upset at a friend or a significant other, but you guys' relationship stayed intact.
It's the same thing here. Especially given how, as soon as she walked onto the Odyssey, Peach took a deep breath, turned around with a smile, and called out to Mario. It can be easily assumed that there were no hard feelings, and that she was able to forgive him.
Another annoying interpretation is: "Peach is SUCH a bitch for rejecting Mario like that!!! How dare she not devote her entire life to him after all he did!!!"
No. My man screwed up here.
He was impulsive and did not consider the possibility that he might've been overwhelming Peach. It was a presentation of Mario's biggest flaw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, I think this highlights some insecurity on Mario's end. If he was really so sure of he and Peach's relationship, he wouldn't have freaked out like that. But maybe that's just me.
Point is, Peach is not to blame here. Stop calling her a bitch for standing up for herself; the one thing that people have been wanting her to do for YEARS??
Been realizing just how much unnecessary shit Peach gets from people, my god.

*the smashers are chilling and vibing when Wario comes running into the room*
Wario: HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN WAPEACH?!
Samus: ...Have we seen fucking what?
Wario: WAPEACH! The evil version of Peach!
Link: I thought Daisy was the evil version of Peach.
Daisy, cleaning her shotgun: A common misconception.
Wario: Well, she got out, stabbed Waluigi in the kidney and now she's on the loose!
Ridley: HAH! Loser.
Sephiroth: If you really want our help then- huh-
*Sephiroth collapses. Wapeach stands behind him with a bloody knife. She has stabbed him in the kidney as well*
*Wapeach runs off as chaos interrupts*
Ridley, cradling Sephiroth: We gotta get him to a doctor!
Dr. Mario: Have you seen his biology?! Get him to Area 51!

I see tweets like this pop up and then comments under the post about how the blame is: ‘the westernizing of Sonic’ ‘Less Japanese writers on board ‘
dude why do people keep believing that misconception consider that has nothing to do with it? Sonic ova had low sales and failed to become more then 2 episodes, Sonic X bombed in Japan, Japan didn’t need good Sonic games for The Saturn to be successful, Japanese written Sonic games weren’t major sellers
Frozen is majorly popular with Japanese girls, Stitch is a super popular in Japan, Hazbin Hotel made it into the top ten anime of 2024 in Japan, They are crazy about Moonin, they loved the Mario movie, the mcu has its own strong Japanese fan base which influenced the works of Shonen Jump manga,
so no, stop blaming western influence

Misconceptions I had about Super Paper Mario when I was a kid
I played the game as a kid. A wee lad, if you will. I know there is some dialogue that debunks some of it, but I either forgot that stuff or my kid brain completely skipped over it. And when the art style is so geometric, it's not hard to misunderstand the art. Here we go:
I'll start with Dimentio because he's real popular with tumblr. I thought he was a woman
I also thought the ends of his poncho were his arms,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as drawn here.
I thought the text at the end of 4-4 meant that Squirps fucking died (Text squished together so I can fit the pic limit)
Tumblr media
But nope! You can find him after completing the game at the end of the Woah Zone
I thought the collar of Bleck's cape was hair
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought Grambi and Jaydes were divorced💀. Yknow, living seperately, their daughter having to travel between them. You can't blame me, my parents were going through a divorce
I thought Francis' ponytail was like... a bandana end? Or like the tie to a ninja mask? Idk man. I just didn't think it was hair
Tumblr media
I thought Merlon's pendant thingy was his mouth. I still can't unsee it💀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought Thoreau's "fingers" were his hair and he had an afro. I honestly didn't get that he was hand-shaped
Tumblr media
I might add more in the future if I remember more

There is a common misconception that Super Mario Bros. 2 is based on a game called Doki Doki Panic. Don’t be fooled! It is actually based on another game called Super Mario Bros. 1, being a sequel and all.

The term "non-binary" and my relationship with gender
I have used they/them pronouns within my closest circles for around 4 years now. I used to identify as non-binary until, last year, I went through an nth wave of self-discovery regarding my lesbianism, internalized homophobia and gender.
It is not that "non-binary" technically doesn't encompass how i feel about my gender identity. It does. What actually made me estrange my relationship with it, was the lack of understanding that cis people and some fellow trans ppl in the community have of "non-binary" being an umbrella term, as well as ignorance about lesbian gender identity.
Now, "gender non-conforming" actually is more accurate to how i feel in its title, and perhaps, even for the ignorant, it could give an understanding about my lesbianism and rocky relationship with womanhood.
I do not reject womanhood. I am a woman, the world sees me as a woman (when it wants to), and being socialized as one has been and will always be part of me.
Moreover, I am a brown latin woman and a lesbian. I am clearly gender non-conforming to a western society in presentation since my ethnic features are considered "unfeminine" and I will never go the extra mile to conceal them. This, somehow makes it easier for me to be read as androgynous even though I might be wearing the same gym clothing as a fem white woman.
I get the impression that a lot of folks have the misconception of "non-binary" being completely gender-neutral, as if it wasn't 1) and umbrella term, 2) something unique to each person and their lived experiences.
While it's in good faith, some people prefer walking on eggshells when it comes to referring anyone who's not cis, instead of asking, preferrably privately, how we would like to be treated. I have even heard binary trans ppl talk about this. Instances like:
Trans person: "yeah when i was a little boy i loved playing mario kart"
Cis Ally: "you were always a little girl inside!!!!"
Trans person: "its ok i don't mind referring to myself pre-transition this way"
Cis Ally: *brain explodes or worse, they actually overstep*
These are a collection of thoughts and experiences i just put down. I'm not really looking for discourse, I only wanted to express my feelings and hopefully reach anyone who can resonate with them.
In conclusion, while it's well-meaning, I think there's still a lot of misunderstanding around non-cis gender identities, and a lot of people seem to run with meanings or guides they saw on buzzfeed or an HR corporate "diversity!!!" course. To the cis ally, ask comfortably if you are afraid of making a mistake. Listen to us and don't take each experience as universal.

>Can we have ONE? Is asking for A SINGLE ADAPTATION to be authentic to the video games too much to ask???
It's insane how Sonic Channel and the official animations on youtube are the only things to properly translate the world of Sonic into a different medium.
I don't understand why all the "real" shows, movies, and comics feel the need to butcher everything.
Say what you will about the adaptations of stuff like Mario and Pokemon but those at least do the bare minimum of resembling the things they're based on.
Digimon hasn't had a single bad adaptation. Or at the very least majority of them are good.
Cult of the Lamb got a comic that feels like the source material.
Good adaptations of video games are possible. People just keep shitting the bed with Sonic for some reason.
It's because they're ALL made by people who think the Sonic video games are stupid, and clearly have no respect for them as they are. They see them as something to improve upon. They want to take the "good" and leave the "bad" when making "their version" of it, instead of actually ADAPTING the video games AS THEY EXIST.
We literally. Do not have. A SINGLE Sonic spin off. That ACTUALLY ADAPTS the video games. Not a single one. And no, I do not accept that "Sonic X is the closest one." The fucking anime that invented the "Sonic comes from a different world compared to the humans" misconception is JUST as bad as SatAM/Archie and its mobius bullshit. They are ALL bad. They ALL disregard the content of the video games that they don't like, change shit around willy nilly, make shit up that doesn't exist in the video games, and then saunter around like they're an improvement that has elevated the franchise to respectable status. And then they end and fade into obscurity, whilst the games keep going along as they always have.
It sure would be nice. To have ONE Sonic adaptation that is actually authentic to the video games. That takes the content of the video games and portrays it completely as is on the screen, warts and all. It'd be nice to have ONE. But I guess that's too much to ask for, since apparently the response to that is always just going to be "yeah well the games are bad, so fuck 'em we're gonna change whatever we want" -_-
I would die and kill for a Sonic comic that is of the caliber of adaptation that the Cult of the Lamb comic was for its game.

interior design insp/references dubai edition
Just like with Louis's wardrobe in Dubai I feel like there's a lot of misconception about the design of the penthouse and what it's meant to represent. First of all, dark modern was and still is super popular design style amongst the wealthy!! It's a very popular way to style large open spaces (like a penthouse apartment). Light and airy designs are usually intended to reflect more natural light to make your rooms look bigger but when you already have a MASSIVE space that's kind of unnecessary. Also it doesn't need to be said that these are vampires so enhancing natural light with bright wall colors/furniture is utterly irrelevant and quite frankly counterproductive to them. You would rarely see a very dark design in a tiny apartment though, that's why its popular mainly among the super wealthy in their mega penthouses or modernist mansions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black furniture also screams lux because it's a PAIN in the ass to maintain like lint, dust, grime, etc gets everywhere constantly so by purchasing black furniture you're pretty much announcing to your guests that you have a maid who cleans for you cause your rich ass sure as hell isn't dusting that shit every day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the overall aesthetic of Dubai I would say is highly modern, there are interesting touches that suggest a couple that has collected items through time. In the first screenshot, you see Daniel and Louis sitting in the ultra modern living space while Armand is off to the side at his very mid-century chair, a very early hint that he's maybe from a different time.
Tumblr media
Looking at this shot, you can see as many as 4 different design styles in a single frame. The table is clearly ornate traditional, the chair (which looks like rattan or bamboo) is more mid-century/boho and the japanese garden, and finally a little pink modern organic henri dejeant lamp. It's such a perfect representation of how long Loumand have been alive and together cause its normal for couples to accumulate different pieces over the course of their lives together and try to fit them in even though they don't exactly match the current designs. But this is what happens when you've been together for 75 years!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's also interesting to see how the design choices of the penthouse evolved because an earlier visualization had a green mario bellini couch instead of a dark grey/black. The bellini couch was a 70's design that made a huge comeback in the last couple years, which is like the WHOLE 2nd interview like someone from the 70s who has entered the picture again after a long absence. However, I bet they probably pulled back on the bellini couch cause it was becoming overdone although it is still mega expensive (comes in at around $20k) but it's kind of become one of those ughh not that shit again kind of item.

Been seein some rather cold takes about Daisy lately…
I’ve seen some people say that she has no personality outside of fanon, but that’s just not true. There is a very very common misconception among the fandom (at least that I’ve noticed) that if a character doesn’t appear in a “mainline” game, then they have no personality. But I’d argue that the spinoffs actually offer waaaaay more in terms of looking into character personalities. And no, I’m not talking about the RPGs ala M&L and Paper Mario as those are obviously full of personality (and Daisy isn’t in those). I’m talking about the Party, Kart, Tennis, and other sports games.
Yes, Daisy hasn’t appeared in any mainline game since her debut, but she’s been in nearly every sports game and her traits, stats, abilities, victory/loss animations, and various other tiny details add up to her personality. The fact that she’s nearly always yelling or just speaking really loud in general (noticeably more than any other character), the fact that she constantly feels a need to say her name and make herself known, how she loves flowers and considers even a small patch of flowers worth protecting, how she’s easily bored by tasks that don’t excite her and isn’t so reliable for them. She tends to jump around a lot, and spin and dance around when she’s excited! She’s apparently a rather fast runner and that is considered her specialty! These are all traits that are displayed in the spinoffs, and there’s probably soooo many more that I just can’t remember right now.
Now, I do think her tomboyish nature is probably fanon, as I don’t really remember seeing anything to show that she acts that way in the games. I think people probably think she’s tomboyish due to how loud and energetic she is. But hey, there’s plenty of fanon for just about any character from any fandom out there. And what’s so wrong with that? Isn’t the whole point of making fanworks to expand on the framework already provided by canon? If we want to stick to what’s actually “canon” then nearly everything the fandom has created would have to be tossed, because there really isn’t much to work with. Fanworks and fandoms thrive on what fans can create based on the canon work, not just sticking to it perfectly.
It’s fine if you think the “fanon” Daisy outshines the “canon” Daisy and you dislike that. But to say that she has no personality aside from fanon interpretations just tells me that you have a very narrow idea of what counts as “canon” in an already rather simplistic world. The Mario games are very simple and straightforward without much consistent lore that actually makes sense cohesively, but the characters are what keep everything tied together despite that. The characters are nearly always consistent, and that includes Daisy. Even when the setting is completely different and some random new villain shows up with some random new power source to steal or species to torment, our same well-known lovable characters will be the center of the story and that’s what makes it fun!
#devin speaks#super mario bros#princess daisy#i mightve gotten a bit too personal with my views of canon vs fanon but i still think it needs to be said#people who argue over what is considered canon in a video game series are so funny to me#especially a series like mario that has expanded soooo far from its original premise#its different than a show or movie since most shows will finish their main story before delving into spinoffs#most of the mainline games are literally just bowser kidnapped the princess and mario has to save her#very few of them offer any insight to personality of anyone#that isn’t to say theres none at all but i still think the party kart and sports games offer waaay more#of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and if you dislike daisy or think shes boring then whatever you do you#i am simply sharing my opinion as well :)#sorry time to be salty real quick#literally the entirety of waluigis personality comes from the spin offs but no one talks about him???#he is literally in the same boat as daisy but i never see anyone saying they dislike him for his ‘fanon personality’#really makes you think#people rag on peach for ‘having no personality’ too but hers shines through the spinoffs as well#and even the rpgs!! shes actually in those and has multiple voicelines and cutscenes and people *still* say she has no personality!#i know this is about daisy but gosh mario ladies in general are treated rather poorly unless theyre eye candy#im glad rosie debuted in a mainline game with a clearly given backstory spoon fed to the player so she doesnt get this treatment lol

Welcome to another edition of:
Common Misconceptions of the Mario Series that are Incredibly Annoying
This time, this post has inspired me to talk about how unfair it really is that Mario, and only Mario, gets regularly accused of being "a cold-hearted psychopath because he stomps on Goombas and Koopas."
Tumblr media
Let's ignore the fact that this has been incredibly dumb to unironically claim and instead focus on this:
Many other characters like Luigi, Peach, Toad, etc have done the exact same actions before.
Yet, I don't see a single person accuse Luigi the same way people constantly accuse Mario.
Strange, isn't it?
I would assume that the average person who knows Mario would have the knowledge that other characters other than Mario have done the same actions that have been deemed as harsh or even evil. There's been numerous games where this is the case.
So why is it that it's cool when Luigi or the other characters do it, but it's suddenly a problem when Mario does it?
It's a contradiction that is so blatantly obvious. And maybe that's part of the "joke," but the "joke" ran itself into the ground way back in 2014.

I'm considering making a Vinesauce Compilation of Vinny and Joel "being the same person" (having similar reactions to things, doing the same thing in certain games, etc.) based on the whole Swedish Vinny/Italian Joel joke + the common misconception/joke that Joel is just Vinny doing a voice, and I would love clip suggestions.
Ideas so far:
Both of them turning Beffica from Bugsnax into a pickle.
Both of them finding the Yoshi face in the Mario Wonder direct funny.
"What do you mean?"
Vinny's Joel Impression.
