Name: Neo Bowser City (aka Koopa City in PAL regions)
Debut: Mario Kart 7
Do you ever think of all the weird locations we only ever see in Mario Kart games? Despite being the biggest of all of Mario's spin-off franchises, when you really get down to it, remarkably few Mario Kart courses are actually based on established Mario locations!
It's not none, there's the occasional Donut Plains and Tick-Tock Clock and Airship Fortress, but most of the courses are these weird one-off locations we never see outside the context of that specific racetrack.
But have you ever taken a moment to step back and like, think of the Lore Implications of some of these places?
Like okay! Bowser just owns this whole dang cyberpunk city and we only ever see it in the context of Kart Racing! How messed up is that?!
One day Mario and Friends were looking for new places to race, and Bowser must have said something like "Gwah-hah-hah! I bet you puny punks could NEVER beat me in a race in my cyberpunk metropolis!" and right then and there it was established that Bowser owns a cyberpunk metropolis. Neo Bowser City is a city that exists in the Super Mario World and aside from returning in other Mario Kart games, it hasn't been acknowledged before or since.
Neo Bowser City first appeared in Mario Kart 7, as the third course in the Star Cup. Despite its flashy visuals, it actually doesn't really have a whole lot going on. It's a difficult track with some tight turns made more difficult by the rain making things more slippery, but besides that it doesn't really have any of the Wacky Obstacles that define so many Mario Kart courses.
Then it returned in Mario Kart 8 looking more gorgeous than ever! The bright colors really pop out, and the whole track is just oozing with detail that really emphasizes the scale of this city!
But like, the emphasized scale really only further raises the question of where this exists in the Mario World. Clearly, the fact that Bowser is plastered all over the billboards and the fact it's named "Neo Bowser City" helps us deduce that this city probably belongs to Bowser. Is this located in Bowser's Kingdom? Just how big is Bowser's Kingdom? And why does he own so many separate castles?
Maybe Neo Bowser City exists in the future? Is this a bad timeline? I mean, Mario Kart is allowed to have time-travel shenanigans. There's a Splatoon battle arena and that exists thousands of years in the future so sure, dust off Mario's Time Machine and head to the bad future where Bowser wins. Should've pressed that New Super Mario Bros. big yellow P-Switch!
I asked my friend Mod Chikako for their input and their theory is that Neo Bowser City isn't the future of Mario's world, but of our world. Clearly Bowser just couldn't take Wreck-It-Ralph losing the Oscar vote!
But in that case I guess it's a cooler cyberpunk future than the one we're living in right now. Corporate monopolies that run mass-surveillance with little government intervention due to their extreme wealth giving them extensive political power? No thank you! Neo Bowser City has bright neon colors, and flying cars! If I'm going to live in a dystopia, I want it to be a fun one. The only advertisements I want to see plastered everywhere are ones advertising Bowser!
Boo! That's the bad guy! Thumbs down!
The course returns again in that pitiful mobile game with another redesign, this time letting us see his Coney Island Disco Palace off in the distance. Does Bowser live in his Neo City? Is this worldbuilding we've been missing out on for decades, finally answered by a kart racer? Is this the capital city of Bowser's Kingdom? Am I once again falling victim to my perpetual hubris of overthinking the Mario franchise?
Really, I can't offer too much in terms of wacky fan theories, because I'm still thinking about this location existing in the first place. I'd love to know the Lore and worldbuilding here, but I guess the nature of Mario's canon is that it doesn't need to be over-analyzed. Bowser simply owns a cyberpunk metropolis, we'll only ever see it in the context of kart racing, and maybe that's okay.
Of course, this post wouldn't be complete if I didn't mention Dinohattan from the 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie, which we've barely talked about on this blog somehow. You see, when the meteor hit, some of the dinosaurs escaped into a parallel timeline where they then evolved into humans, and then they built Dinohattan instead of Manhattan. Get it? Yeah, that movie is all sorts of bonkers. I wouldn't say it's very good, but I kinda love it. I'd recommend checking it out, if only to see a vastly different take on Mario than you'd be used to.
Anyway I bring this up because it's a completely separate instance of a version of Bowser building a large cyberpunk metropolis, and it actually predates Neo Bowser City! Do you think they could be connected? Are Dinohattan and Neo Bowser City one and the same...?

My favourite characterisation of Mario when it comes to Bowuigi is a Mario who knows Bowser is exactly Luigi's type.
After they first met Bowser, he did some Very Subtle Detective Work to see if Luigi caught feelings. He knew his brother, knew he hadn't, but knew it was only a matter of time.
It was several months of knowing Bowser before Mario spotted Luigi with a blush on his face. He knew. Very Subtle Detective Work revealed Luigi did not know about his feelings.
Luigi's crush got worse, and Mario noticed Bowser was giving Luigi a lot more attention than usual. At one point he was alone with Kamek and bluntly asked for his thoughts on it. Kamek told him he had spent several weeks writing love songs about an unknown man who did match Luigi's description.
Mario then did his best to play matchmaker with the two most oblivious people on the planet. This was made even harder by the fact that Luigi still did not know he had a big crush on Bowser.

I've been thinking concepts of putting the Squid Sisters in Mario Kart: Double Dash... I'm still making concepts to think what would happen if someone made a mod for Double Dash that includes Marie and Callie as playable characters. Do you have any concepts that you like to share, Spectre?
Yo??? Mario Kart: Double Dash modding? i had no idea that was even a thing! That's awesome!
Now i don't know how modding on Double Dash works and if you can even implement custom models and animations but, i will share some ideas for if Callie and Marie were in Mario Kart in general.
I think that Callie and Marie would be middleweight characters, not light or heavy. You would also need to make sure they have their voice lines and personality in tact. I'm sure there's tons of videos online and files out there for their voice lines to use for the different actions in the game (getting hit, landing an item, winning, losing, etc.) When you select them they gotta do the "Stay Fresh!" line and their pose. Unless you can't do that in Double Dash then that's okay. Modding is very hard I've heard.
If they were in something like Mario Kart 8, 7 or Wii, i think their tricks would have them do different poses in the air that reference poses they've done before and I got some ideas.
Or maybe they can transform into their squid forms and do some tricks i don't know. You can probably take a model of the squid form for Inklings from Splatoon 1 and edit it to look like Callie and Marie's squid forms.
Also... Callie's hair has to react to the wind, it better go up in the air as she goes fast.
Another thing too, if they were in Mario Kart 8 for example, i think someone could mod them to replace the Inkling girl/boy and have alternate outfits for the Squid Sisters. AND! GUESS WHAT! SOMEONE DID THAT! THERE'S A MOD FOR THEM IN MARIO KART 8 DELUXE THAT I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT!!!! IT CAME OUT LIKE A WEEK AGO!
The mod is on Gamebanana and it's made by Mannta! They could give you some inspiration for a Double Dash mod of the Squid Sisters.

I've been working on a Mario Kart 8 mod to add @phisnom's character Phi as a playable driver. It's still a work-in-progress so I haven't finished most of it - i've just got the basic model done with some other things like UI and her kart.

I made a post a while ago lamenting that nobody had imported any sonic stages into bomb rush, because I really liked the movement in brcf and wanted to see how it felt on that kind of level design
recently a map editor for brcf got released, and people have been doing exactly that- it's a little janky because this is like, a within-the-last-week-or-so kind of development but it's really fucking cool. once things get ironed out more I think this will be 100% what I was looking for from both series.
#there's also a mod someone made that fucks up the physics in a way that makes that style of platforming feel better#by removing a lot of limiters on speed and causing slide tracks to rocket you forward and other things#people seem to also be working on porting over a lot of classic jet set radio areas and some mario kart levels also

Name: Bowser Castle 2 Debut: Super Mario Kart
Oh no! We didn't have a post ready for today! Well let me improvise one for you really quick. Because I love you. Don't take it too personally, though, we're not here to start parasocial relationships with our followers! Sorry. I hope you understand.
This is Bowser Castle 2, from Super Mario Kart, but if I named it I'd call it Bowser Castle POO! Because it isn't very good.
Many people consider this one of the worst courses in Mario Kart history, and many people would be right! You see, iconic Bad Guy King Morton "Bowser" Koopa Sr. wanted to prove his Bad Guy status by creating a Bad Course, and boy howdy did he! He probably feels so smug about it. Jerk.
Look at that map. This course has a dead end on it. This might be the only course in Mario Kart history to do such a thing! It's possible you can use a Feather to turn that into a shortcut, but I've never pulled it off. But also I'm not very good at this game, nor am I interested in becoming good at this game, so it might just be a skill issue on my part.
But getting past the dead end offers you no reprieve, as afterwards you have to deal with this mess! It feels like they're trying to make some sort of double-loop formation, but all the 90 degree turns combined with the bridge connecting the loops being at the top ends up making it play very awkwardly. Or something like that. Listen I'm just writing this post in a stream of conscience, I dunno how to describe what's so bad about this beyond "it's bad."
luigi enters the torment labyrinth
As you can probably expect, having "being the worst Mario Kart course ever made" on its resume hasn't done good things for SNES Bowser Castle 2. The only game it's returned in is Super Circuit, which included literally every SNES course, which is to say it was not getting any sort of special treatment. Even Mario Kart Tour, a game which literally invented new SNES courses for the sake of getting more content out of existing assets, refused to bring Bowser Castle 2 into its arms.
Is there any hope in this world for an absolute dogwater course like this one? I dunno but that's not gonna stop me from coming up with hypothetical solutions. Yes this is the kind of thing I think about in my spare time! Don't judge me!
Really, for all I've been dunking on this course in this post, I don't think it'd actually take all that much to get this into a playable state. As you can see, I've re-envisioned the dead end as a shortcut (likely blocked off with a wooden cutout so you need to use a mushroom), and I've reimagined the Torment Labyrinth as a double roundabout configuration à la Wii Rainbow Road. After that I just smoothed out some turns, added a glider ramp at the end so you have something to do during the last straightaway, and envisioned some totally awesome elevation changes that can not be displayed from a bird's-eye view like this, and bam! I created a version of this course that could potentially maybe be enjoyable.
I mean I dunno. I don't have the means to play it.
I drew this earlier this morning and it's the entire reason I've decided to make this our spur-of-the-moment post. I hope you're proud of me. For what it's worth, at least SNES Bowser Castle 2 can theoretically be made into a somewhat enjoyable course. It's not like it's stuck with a name like "Figure-8 Circuit" or something.

sometimes in life, you get ideas. They might create a new source of energy. They might create new fiction. They might create a wonderful au.
They might make you create a indie horror character in a biker helmet and with a motorcycle next to them.
