I'm not sure what that means, as I would have expected older recs to get more notes just because they've been around longer. I read this fic for the first time maybe six weeks ago and have been trying to think how to recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it. Its excellence is just so huge, I seem incapable of breaking it down.

This is the emotional maturity, the consequences, the heft I think I needed for the last two seasons of Sherlock to live up to the promise of the first two. In a way, it healed my fannish heart more than any other story has, precisely because it owns the mutual brokenness that lies at the heart of John and Sherlock: how they got there, how they hurt and help each other in equal measures. None of their hands are clean; nor are Mary’s, who we see as ghost-Mary and the way she might function for John in the period after his death. 

But while no one is innocent, neither is anyone irredeemable. I can’t put it any better than Sherlock did in one of my favorite passages:

"John, you are an absolute menace and you have put me through the ringer. And there have been times where I have wanted to throttle you. But I'm going to tell you something I don't know if you've ever heard."

"What's that?"

"You're worth it. You're absolutely worth it."

At 280,000 words, it was a good meaty story. To put that in comparison, that’s longer than any individual Harry Potter book (yes, even OOTP), and about the length of any two of the three Lord of the Rings volumes. It took me several weeks to read, and at several points I was convinced my kindle was misformatted: there couldn’t possibly be this much more to come. I don’t mean that as a criticism, because it just kept finding further depths to explore. The fic felt so rich, and it just kept delving into its themes and questions.

I can’t recommend it enough to any Johnlocker, particularly ones who wants to go beyond the first kiss, the first blush of love between those men into how they could stay alive and grow into men able to love each other better. This is a story of growth, but also one that does the work about how that growth could be possible.

Go and read the thing. I may just have to begin it again all over, now that I finally got to talking about it.

Then he heard that phrase again. “He’s my friend,” John was saying.

Sherlock leaned in to take a closer look at the corpse, but nothing could’ve prepared him for what he saw: a tall, pale dark-haired man in his thirties, dressed in a suit and an expensive coat, with a significant amount of blood coming out of his forehead. Was he... was he staring at his own body?

An AU where Sherlock died in The Reichenbach Fall. He's come back as a ghost, and only John can hear him.

Rec: Holy mother of angst, hurt and comfort, this one is absolutely incredible! I know that word count is more than a little formidable, and I did start to worry that the author would be able to keep my attention and interest when it seemed that the story had come to a kind of resolution less than halfway through (and knowing that there are no cases to drive the plot), but really every moment over the past three weeks that I wasn’t reading this fic, I was wishing I were reading this fic. And when I was reading it, I was completely absorbed and never skimmed over anything. The ideas are just so compelling and I was especially captivated by the metaphor referenced in the title, which is just beautifully developed throughout the story.

The basic premise is John checking into rehab for alcohol abuse and discovering in the course of therapy that he has a whole host of other issues at the root of it. In my opinion, it’s a staggeringly well done delve into the depths of John’s character and the way that the human psyche and brain work in general. (I say this as a complete layperson and have no idea if any of it holds up to real psychoanalytic theory, but it makes for a cracking good read, I’ll tell you that much.) The whole thing is wrapped up with both John’s and Sherlock’s attitudes toward commitment, intimacy, and sex, in what I thought was a very raw, honest and realistic way as well as being utterly luxuriant and sensual.

At the same time, the story serves as a much-needed and highly satisfying continuation and fix-it for the canon episodes, dealing with many of the ghosts - both literal and figurative - we were left with, including Rosie, Mary, Sholto, and to a lesser extent, Eurus. It’s not a comfortable story by a long shot, though. Lots of mistakes are made and tough decisions taken. Ugliness happens. But beauty as well, and there is a happy ending guaranteed.

Angsty Saturday fanfic recommendations

As you may or may not know, I read Johnlock fanfictions. A lot. And most of them (who am I kidding, almost every single one of them) is angsty as hell. And oh boy, how I enjoy reading about my Baker Street Boys being sad and broken, only to be happy together in the end (or not, hehe, it depends on my mood)
