Hello! Was the marriage of George Mikhailovich and his wife really disastrous? Thank you.
Hello there! Thank you for your question.
Grand Duke Georgiy Mikhailovich married Princess Maria of Greece and Denkark in 1900. Upon the marriage, she became 'Maria Georgievna'. Georgiy seemed very much in love with Maria at first, he courted her for five years before she decided to marry him, having turned him down initially. They seemed to be, on paper, a good match - they were notably both very artistic, and together they designed their own English-style house in the Crimea, called Harax.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were close with the Romanovs, especially Xenia Alexandrovna, who was Maria's best friend, cousin, AND sister-in-law! Georgiy and Maria's daughters occasionally played with Maria and Anastasia Nikolaevna, and were friendly with Nicholas and Alexandra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Maria never seemed to be able to settle in Russia and longed to return to Greece, which I suspect put strain on the marriage. The final blow (in my opinion) came in 1913, when Maria's father King George I of Greece was assassinated. It was such a shock and she was devastated. This was even more distressing as it was the Romanov Tercentenary year, and Georgiy and Maria were expected to attend celebrations, despite being deep in mourning.
Maria seemed to have been deeply unhappy, and took her children to London in 1914 as a way to take a break from the marriage, with Georgiy meant to follow them to London later on. Of course, Maria couldn't have predicted war would break out, but it meant that there was an excuse to stay in London and away from Russia where she was unhappy, as her and her daughters couldn't travel back to Russia due to the danger it posed. It is believed that her daughters, Nina and Xenia, who had tumultuous relationship with their mother, always resented her for taking them away from their father in 1914 - he would be shot in 1919, and they would never see him again after the move to London.

Despite this, there was clearly some affection between Georgiy and Maria. From London, Maria tried desperately to help Georgiy, contacting Russian relatives, the Danish embassy, and offering £50,000 (almost £3,000,000 today) of her own money in return for him being freed.
So, their marriage wasn't absolutely disastrous - there seems to have been some closeness and they clearly shared common interests. Their collaboration on Harax especially indicates that they had a good partnership. Despite this, Maria never seemed able to fall in love with Georgiy, or Russia. It wasn't a success by any means, but they did not hate each other.

“Grand Duchess Elizabeth, Ella, was one of the most beautiful women of her time. Her head was in perfect shape, like a statue, and beautiful features. Her complexion was like rose petals…”

A married man, with a wife he loved and a palace of his own, the former Stieglitz Mansion on the English Quay in St Petersburg, Pavel was supremely happy, and Elisabeth and Sergei were as pleased with Alexandra as he was. Elisabeth said that her new sister-in-law had a cheering effect on the brothers, encouraging them to talk about their childhood, which kept them amused for hours on end. None of the others seemed to realize that Alexandra found the adjustment to married life draining, and at times unhappy. She was ten years younger than Pavel and his regimental duties often took him away from home. In November 1889, five months after the wedding, one of the Tsaritsa's ladies found her pale, exhausted by a difficult first pregnancy, and homesick for Greece. Her baby, Marie, was born in the spring and Sergei was chosen as godfather, proudly carrying the baby to the font. In the autumn of 1890 Pavel took Alexandra home to Greece for a holiday, and on his return he became commander of the Imperial Horse Guards, based at Krasnoe Selo. He was given a suite of rooms in the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo but was only able to join Alexandra there at weekends. She felt his absence badly, especially when Sergei and Elisabeth left the city for Moscow. Elisabeth told her father that Sergei was particularly troubled by 'the thought of leaving Paul-you know how Serge has always lived for this brother, treating him more like a son.

Photographs: 1. Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich; 2. Pavel's first wife: Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna (Nee Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark); 3. Pavel's morganatic wife: Olga Valerianovna, Princess Paley (nee Olga Valerianovna Karnovich).
Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich (1860 - 1919) and his children
Grand Duke Pavel was the youngest son of Emperor Alexander II and Empress Maria Alexandrovna. As a child and even as an adult, he had very frail health (but that did not prevent him from being very successful with the ladies and a great dancer.) Politically, Pavel would play his most important role toward the end of the Romanov dynasty, when he largely acted as a liaison between Empress Alexandra and Emperor Nicholas II and the rest of the Romanov family. It was Grand Duke Paul who informed the Empress of the abdication.
Pavel was married twice and had five children. His first wife was Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna (nee Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark.) He had two children with her, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (the younger) and Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich (Alexandra died giving birth to him.) Several years later, Pavel married Olga Valerianovna Karnovich morganatically and was exiled from Russia by the Emperor; the couple had a comfortable exile since Paul had money out of Russia. Olga would be made Princess Paley when the couple was allowed to return to Russia. By the time they returned to Russia, they had three children: Vladimir, Irina, and Natalia.
Grand Duke Pavel's five children were remarkably good-looking. One of his daughters, Natalia, became a model and actress in the United States. It is a shame that they had to live through such horrible times; none of them seem to find lasting stability in the area of relationships throughout their lives. But this post is just about what a good example of the general good looks of the Romanov family Pavel's children were.
Following are some photographs of Pavel's beautiful offspring:
Photographs: Pavel and Olga's children: 1. Prince Vladimir Pavlovich Paley; 2. Princesses Natalia and Irina Pavlovna Paley; 3. Prince Vladimir with his two little sisters; 4. Prince Vladimir; 5. Princess Irina Pavlovna; 6. Princess Natalia Pavlovna

George Alexandrovich & the ghost
Tumblr media
“During one of our stays in Frederiksborg a funny thing happened true ghost story. It was a warm night and we all of our cousins went out into the garden and sat down on a big bench which was just right for all of us. It was already getting dark, and we were talking quietly and enjoying a quiet and beautiful night when we saw something white among the trees. As it got closer it seemed to get taller and thinner. We sat in amazement. The castle was supposed to be haunted. Our legs trembled. When the creature was about twenty paces from us, we all jumped up and rushed into the house except only one of the boys bravely stayed: Grand Duke George Romanov, second son of Tsar Alexander III, stood on the bench and waited, and when what we thought was a ghost approached him He jumped and landed on it. The ghost collapsed, and my cousin began to beat and beat with all his might. He stopped when he heard faint cries, "It's me!" We can imagine the amazement and horror of poor George when he learned that it was our grandfather. He wrapped himself in a sheet, and put a long broom over his head. So the ghost seemed tall and thin. The grandfather had commended his grandson for his bravery, and called everyone cowards.” - Maria georgeiovna
