Marie Pavlovna breaks the news of her engagement to her father
My chief worry was how to break the news to my father. My heart was heavy with remorse at not having sought his counsel. I took my problem to my aunt. She seemed unable to understand my scruples and could only repeat those phrases which we had heard so often from her and, in days prior, from our uncle.
Our father had abandoned us. He had left his responsibilities to others. It was now the duty of those others to make such decisions as would provide for my happiness...
The word “happiness,” in her mouth, had the ring of a verdict. I heard her pronounce this word so many times, and in so many tones, during the months that followed, that I came thoroughly to detest it. “Your happiness requires... For your happiness... In the interests of your happiness...” And so on, interminably.
My father had nothing to say as to all this happiness; he was not able to change anything; it was decided. And now all that I had to do was to write him and tell him about it.
Since I did not know what to write or what to say, my aunt dictated to me a letter of which I have never since been able to think without blushing. Upon that occasion, as throughout the period of my engagement, I most assuredly did honor to my princely education. Now I humbled myself entirely to my aunt’s judgment and wrote exactly as she dictated.
My letter did not deceive my father. It was as sentimental as could be wished, but the words of love and of happiness were set down with too great ease, and with too great emphasis; he knew that they could not be sincere.
By the text of that letter, I at last understood exactly the sentiments I was supposed to entertain towards my fiancé. I understood that I was “madly in love” with him, and that this love had come upon me like a thunderclap.
“A rather official thunderclap,” I thought to myself, disgustedly, but I docilely copied the letter, word for word.
The answer that I received from Paris was pained and sad. My aunt’s attitude towards my father throughout all these happenings hurt him profoundly; he held it against her always. The haste with which they had disposed of my future seemed to him incomprehensible. I was too young, he said, to marry, too young to have developed independence of judgment. And he deeply resented the fact that all arrangements had been made without his having been consulted, or even notified.
Nor was my father the only one unfavorably impressed by so rushed and abrupt an engagement. My grandfather, the King of Greece, likewise protested. He wrote my aunt, pointing out that I was barely seventeen, and asked that the marriage be postponed until my eighteenth year.
My aunt announced that in this she would submit to his wish, my father’s, and mine. The marriage was set for the spring of 1908.

Tsarevich Grand Duke Georgyi Alexandrovich (1870 - 1899)
These are my two favorite pictures of Tsarevich Georgyi. I love his impish smile. We don't know much about him so it is easy to like him.
He was cute, blonder than his siblings (I think he looked more like his Danish male relatives than Nicholas or Mikhail.) He had that cute smile. He was smart and studious (he never stopped studying - he continued to study astronomy and archeology once he went to Abbas Tuman.) In a letter to a friend, his sister Xenia (whom he seemed to adore and who adored him) wrote that he liked drinking a bit too much and he liked the ladies (the guy was in his mid-twenties at the time, tuberculosis or not, so nothing surprising about that) and his doctors wanted him to stay away from champagne and the ladies (he probably did not listen.) He had a good sense of humor.
The Mikhailovichi, especially Nicholas, Georgyi, and Sandro, visited him frequently in the Caucasus. They had great affection for him, probably because they had lost a young brother to tuberculosis.
There are all kinds of rumours about George marrying morganatically and having children. His tuberculosis was quite severe and he was very sick most of the time (towards the end his heart was obviously affected as he was too short of breath to walk.) But I hope he did get to fall in love or in lust and that the mountains of the Caucasus are crawling with his descendants.
He is the third son Empress Maria Feodorovna; the first was baby Alexander and the second was Nicholas. Apparently, George was her favorite.
