This might be, without even a hint of exaggeration, the happiest frame of Shadow in the entire franchise. I don’t think there is a single other moment that comes even close to this. This frame makes the rest of his story hurt so much more.

I have wips I need to finish, but @doodle17 's baby Maria au had me in a choke-hold tonight, and I needed to write this

Tap tap tap That was what Shadow woke up to that morning. He slowly opened his eyes, blinking the sleep out of them before he focused on the scientist in front of him.

"Ah, you're awake! Good, good. Let us get you out of there, I have someone for you to meet, " Gerald hummed as he pressed away at buttons on a control panel, much to Shadow's confusion. He watched as the containment tube drained before it eventually opened. The hedgehog stepped out, taking a quick moment to stretch out his arms and legs before noticing the doctor's extended hand. "Come along. We won't what to keep our special guest waiting, now do we?," Gerald asked as Shadow took his hand.

The two walked down the sterile hallways of the lab until they reached a door. The doctor put in a code, letting the door open up to another hallway. It wasn't like the blank white walls of the lab that Shadow had always known and grown used to. The walls were a soft coffee brown, with pictures and panting hung up. It felt... different, like this place was lived in; like it could be a home. The doctor guided the hedgehog to an open room filled with a sofa, chairs, and a small table.

"Take a seat, Shadow, while I go grab our special guest," the doctor smiled, waiting until Shadow sat on the couch before they left through a door. Shadow waited until the door closed once more before he got up to take a look around the room. It was foreign to him; he hadn't seen anything like it before. It felt warm in a sense, like he felt safer here than anywhere in the lab. He felt like he could relax and unwind here without being dragged into yet another experiment or test. Soon, a tiny blanket caught his eye. It was a soft pink, with little animal pattern on it. He didn't know what the animal was exactly; the scientists didn't find it too important to tell him about different animals most of the time. He liked this one, though, even if he didn't know what it was.

The hedgehog took the blanket into his hands before he heard the door open again. He watched the doctor enter the room with a little bundle in his arms. "Shadow, let me formally introduce you to Maria." Gerald smiled as he set Maria onto her play mat.

Shadow recognized the girl, having seen her playing in the doctor's lap a few times before, but he never got to know much about her other than that she was related to the doctor in a way. He didn't know if he should get closer, knowing that he could potentially hurt her, but soon let his curiosity of the baby take over. Shadow leaned in closer, tilting his head as he inspected the baby. Maria soon took an interest in Shadow, reaching her hands out and grabbed the hedgehog's snout, almost tugging at it as she turned into a fit of giggles. Shadow soon snorts, shaking her hand off his snout while trying to nip at her. He pulled his head back and glared at Maria, only to see her eyes wide and slowly filling with tears of fear.

"Shadow, be nice with Maria. She's still young and doesn't know much better. With you being older, you need to guide her and teach her how to be gentler." Gerald said as he sat close by, just in case something were to happen. Shadow huffed, not understanding why he had to be nice if she wouldn't. He then looked back to Maria, noticing how she was slowly calming down while staring up at Shadow. The hedgehog rolled his eyes before reluctantly leaning in close again. Maria hesitated for a moment before she carefully grabbed Shadow's snout, cooing before she nuzzled her face against the fur on his face.

Shadow was a bit taken aback by the show of affection, stiffening up before relaxing as the baby's soft coos reached his ears. He slowly took Maria into his lap, letting her play with his hand as the doctor smiled in approval. Shadow felt a warmth slowly spreading through his chest as he rested his chin on the baby's head. "Welcome to brotherhood, Shadow." Gerald joked before he noticed the time, leaving the room for a moment to grab a bottle for Maria's dinner.

The hedgehog watched the doctor leave before looking back to Maria, "Huh... brother..." he mumbled, another small smile spreading across his lips, "well then, hello... Maria.. my little sister..."
