The Hunt
Book: Immortal Desires series
Pairing: Cas Harlow x F!MC (Isa Valentino)
Genre: Angst/Fluff
Rating: Teen
Summary: Isa's first hunting trip with the Venandis doesn't go as she quite expected......
One word to describe Isa after she had been Turned was angry.
Not in the usual angry way, it was more of a constant. She felt numb most days, and others all she could feel was a boiling sensation in her stomach, and all she could feel was red-hot rage. No matter how hard she tried, there was no escape. Most days were spent in bed, staring into empty space, focusing on nothing.
After the battle with the hunters, she had nothing to do, and an eternity to do it. And on top of that, the covens were still being malicious, none of them had been too accepting of her when she joined their ranks. And on top of that, her human friends were just as nasty to her. Sometimes she was coerced out of bed, usually by Cas or Gabe, to help hone in her powers, but their jokes fell on deaf ears, her words were inconsequential, she felt as if she were watching herself on a character in s movie screen, rather than living life. Was this how it would be forever?
Cas and Gabe didn't push her. Her boyfriend had tried to at first, but upon seeing her devastation, allowed her some space to grieve. Isa didn't know if she wanted space, nor if she wanted someone to be with her during her days. He was worried about their relationship, but she assured him she still loved him. She just needed time, even if nothing was getting better.
As she lay in her bed, her blankets pooled at her ankles, she heard the familiar clink clink of pebbles at her window. Cas was here. She sat up, cracking open the window to allow him to climb inside, his boots thumping against the hardwood floor as he landed on the ground.
"Hello sunshine!" He called warmly, a smile on his face. Isa rubbed her eyes, snapping out of her daydreams to look at him clearly. While Cas appeared to be his standard self-confident being, she could easily see the worry behind his eyes, the waver of his smile. She felt awful for making him feel like this, but she just couldn't help it.
"Hi." She returned, mustering up a smile at the sight of him- it was good to see him, after all.
"I think I know a way to make you feel better-when have you last fed?"
"Um.....I had breakfast this morning?"
She raised her eyebrows at him, trying to understand his meaning.
"No, I mean-when did you last drink blood?"
That resulted in a shrug from her, and she caught him frowning.
"Well, you must be hungry. How'd you like for me to take you out on your very first hunt with the other Venandis?"
"No, absolutely not-."
"Come on.....it'll be fun."
"Cassius-,"
"We can stop at the library on the way home."
"And we can stay there as long as I want?"
"With zero complaints from me."
".........Fine."
"Get dressed."
And so, a few minutes later, Isa and Cas stepped into a forest clearing, their eyes falling upon the other Venandi clan, all chattering excitedly about this hunt. Isa had decided to try to hide from them, as she didn't want any drama and was thinking about the library that was waiting for her after this. In all honesty, she wouldn't have agreed even if it were in the picture, but she had known Cas would put up a good fight, and she was in no mood for conflict right now, so she simply stood next to her boyfriend, waiting for whatever came next.
"Who invited Isa?-." A voice cut out among the crowd, everyone's attention turned to a certain redhead among them.
"Hey Margo." Isa said, waving meekly at the girl who was now glaring at her. So much for hiding in plain sight.
"She's part of our clan. She has a right to go hunting with us." Cas' voice called out, one of his arms wrapping around her waist. Margo snorted.
"And she hasn't been a single hunting trip with us since she was Turned. She drinks blood from bags like those Clements. She should have joined them if she was so into playing human. If you ask me, she's just a sorry excuse for a vampire. She's never seen anywhere without one or two of her bodyguards." The girl gloated, crossing her arms over her chest.
Isa clenched her fists. It was all too much for her. She already had not wanted to be here. She didn't even want to be a vampire. Everyone was so mean to her despite the fact that she hadn't done anything. All she ever was was nice. She squeezed her eyes shut, her nails digging into the palms of her hands as she made her next move. Before Cas could step forward to defend her, the girl swung her fist, connecting with Margo's nose with a resounding CRACK. She fell to the floor, and no one moved for a few seconds. Even Isa herself was in shock-
"Oh my God-I'm so sorry."
She looked from Margo to the stunned faces of the Venandis. She had saved their lives twice and they were still shocked she could throw a punch. Her brows furrowed.
"I mean-." She puffed out her chest, glaring at the rest of her coven as she demanded, "Yeah. I did that. Who's next?"
"I think my nose is broken-." Groaned Margo from the forest floor.
"Yeah, well, maybe it won't look like a trumpet anymore. Now, if you don't mind, we'll be leaving." She nodded at Cas, who followed her as she stomped away, leaves crunching underfoot on her way down the dirt path.
"That was awesome, New Girl!" Cas exlaimed as they reached the edge of the forest. He gently grabbed her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. Isa looked up into his eyes, noticing the gleam of pride in them which made her smile.
"She had it coming. But also I feel bad, do you really think I broke her nose?"
Cas snorted. "I hope so. And for next time, we gotta work on your insults, 'trumpet nose' wasn't really doing it for me."
"Her nose looks like a trumpet though. Was I just supposed to lie?"
"I guess not," he shrugged. "Where did you learn to punch like that?"
"I don't know, but I felt like Mike Tyson, without the beating women part though." She shrugged. It was no secret that she mainly used her powers or talismans during fights, this display of strength had only cropped up in training sessions with the Venandis, she had never really put it into practice until now.
"Well, you looked much cooler than Mike Tyson." Cas smirked, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of her head.
"Thanks. We're going to the library now." She stated, relishing in the fact that at least she would get to go to her favorite spot in the little town now.
"Yes ma'am." And with that, Cas laid a hand on the small of her back, and they walked towards the library together.

margo. roth. speigleman.
i actually feel really strongly about this, i feel so strongly about this and i FEEL strongly so much and i'm gonna fucking talk about it because it's one am and i'm watching the paper towns movie because this is the kind of shit i do at one am and i am reminded of when i managed to quote john green in every single one of my ap lit papers and i was actually kind of impressed with myself and then one of my classmates got annoyed with me because (in her words) he "made the manic pixie dream girl trope" and then got mad at me when i tried to explain that in reality that is not at all what john green did, functionally. is margo roth speigleman a manic pixie dream girl? sure, if you only read half the novel. the whole point of margo roth speigleman and her relationship with q is to deconstruct the manic pixie dream girl trope. is there or is there not a whole arc in the book dedicated to q realising he was viewing margo as a concept and not a person. is there or is there not a whole page where he understands that he isn't understanding her or seeing her as a whole person. is there or is there not a moment in which he realises that that's bad and what is actually functionally keeping him from getting her and ultimately finding her. she is a teenager who has a lot of hurt in her, and for all his perceived faults john green is REALLY GOOD AT WRITING HURT.
and herein lies the problem, doesn't it? who is going to take the time to read the novel in the context of understanding margo past what they believe her to be? these same people who look at their real friends and see their hurt as surface level entertainment are the people who think that margo roth speigleman is meant to be the hailing crown jewel of the manic pixie dream girl trope, because they think that that is the function of trauma. the read of margo and her stroy, of the novel in general, as something that glorifies the manic pixie dream girl is a read that comes from a person who already glorifies the manic pixie dream girl.
maybe i'm projecting a little. maybe i had a friend who continuously compared me to margo in ways that made me realise he didn't understand the book. maybe when he said don't pull a margo on me as a fun little joke he didn't realise that there was some part of me that wished i was that bold. maybe that's the point. margo represents something, undoubtedly. but she isn't meant to represent the manic pixie dream girl in a way that markets it, rather, she's meant to show how the manic pixie dream girl is underneath the perception of the trope. what it means to be the person who others look to for their lifechanging experiences and use the ways that your hurt informs you to grow without helping or understanding you. using your broken pieces to build themselves up and then letting them break all over again after they get used up.
maybe i'm not making sense, maybe it's just one am.
but at the same time, maybe margo roth speigleman is so completely nuanced that people just want her to be shallow because it means they can get away without examining themselves.
anyway, i should stop consuming john green media in the middle of the night. it always makes me sad and pensive.
#west text!#john green#paper towns#margo roth speigleman#manic pixie dream girl#trope discussion#honestly i really think that john green did such a good job#at deconstructing the trope#especially in paper towns#and it really bugs me when people misread that#mostly because then they get mad at me for liking it#well not mostly#but partly#besides even if it wasn't the case its annoying that youre gonna get mad at me for that#like oh no god forbid i like a novel#john green is an OBJECTIVELY good writer#critically acclaimed even#god forbid his novels make me feel something oh my god#idk i jus think margo#i do in fact have two john green spotify playlists#listen#i've BEEN someones margo and it's fucked up when they don't fucking think like q does#its also REALLY interesting how the manic pixie dream girl trope being like#an upset#is more about the characters being perceived that wy and less about the people perceiving them that way#idk i should stop yapping and go to bed#hope you guys enjoy this one#please god no one show this to john green i think id die#there are many things i would like to say to john green#reiterating stuff he knows is not on that list yall

Why "Another Believer" by Rufus Wainwright is a near perfect encapsulation of the thematic elements present in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" (a lyrical analysis)
youtube
"Hello, I got something to tell you But it's crazy, I got something to show you So give me just one more chance, one more glance And I will make of you another believer" There is a need to express, and to be understood almost immediately- and in the case of Miles and Gwen, this could not be more relevant. They themselves are aware of how unique and undefinable their experiences are- but despite that, they won't stop holding onto the knowledge that there are people out there that have the ability to understand them, even if they don't know how to reach them at the start of the film. This knowledge is the exact thing that causes Gwen to cling to the Spider society so much after the loss of stability and direction in her life. It's what makes Miles so determined to move forward and succeed as both a superhero, and as himself.
"Guess what? You got more than you bargained Ain't it crazy? You got more than you paid for So give me just one more chance, one more glance One more hand to hold" The responsibilities of the spider society, and of Miguel's dictatorial position in Gwen's life shows to not be a good thing for her. She still lacks direction and stability, in addition to a whole new set of expectations imposed on her by external forces in exchange for the sense of deeper understanding that she needs- now, more than ever. For Miles, he's still new at this whole superhero thing. The first movie in this soon-to-be trilogy was all about him stepping into his own identity, while this film is, arguably, about defining what that means for him. In the face of reuniting with Gwen, he is vicariously exposed to what it means for her to be a spider-person in the greater scheme of the spider-verse. She has restrictions; she isn't allowed to see him; she has all these new opportunities; and most importantly, he doesn't fit into all that. The bond that they share is still there. They still love and care for each-other despite all that- but that's exactly why it can't work. Gwen is now aware of the dangers imposed by their relationship more than ever- being exposed to the concept of "canon-events" and "anomalies"- and knows that she cares too much about Miles to open up like that. It's too much for her to handle at times, so she "protects" him from realizing that. But that doesn't really change anything. Those two still care about each other- and Miles, in particular, feels the need to let Gwen know that despite everything, they still get to have that bond. The greater-scheme of things doesn't change what they have right here, right now, and that they still have that deep connection. "Guess what? You got more than you bargained Ain't it crazy? Gwen is now aware of the dangers imposed by their relationship- being exposed to the concept of "canon-events" and "anomalies"- and knows that she cares too much about Miles to open up like that. The weight of destiny is too much for her to handle at times, so she opts to "protect" Miles from that realization (at several points in the film). But that doesn't really change anything. These two still care about each other- and Miles, in particular, feels the need to let Gwen know that despite everything, they still get to have that bond. The greater-scheme of things doesn't change what they have right here, right now, and that they still have that deep connection.
"You've been on my mind (you've been on my mind) Though it may seem I'm fooling Wasting so much time (wasting so much time) Though it may seem I'm fooling What are we gonna do? (What are we gonna do?) What are we gonna do about it?" Miles has always looked up to those who have left an impact on his journey to becoming who he is. Uncle Aaron, his father, Peter B, Gwen, etc... He doesn't get himself wrapped up in the guilt for the tragedy that has befallen him in certain situations, but still looks to them in order to build from it. Gwen, on the other hand, finds herself haunted by the past and trying to fix her past mistakes. A blindly longed for redemption, if you will. Those experiences, coupled by her new restrictive work (as well as unresolved personal issues), leaves her unable to deal with the possibility of pursuing greater ambitions; such as her friendship with Miles, confronting her father, or even questioning where she fits into everything. She remains lost, and fools herself into following Miguel's rhetoric in the desperate search for support in her life. Miles, however, does not suffer from this issue- in part because of his upbringing. He wasn't meant to be Spider-Man. He wasn't written with the typical origin story, or canon events from the get-go. He was born to two loving parents, in an amazing household, with a bright opportunistic future that allowed him to define who he is and what he wants when he decided to wear the mask. He wasn't burdened or influenced by the circumstances of his situation, which makes him fortunate enough to be able to decide his fate. When Gwen decides to take off without him, planning on never seeing him again for reasons beyond her, Miles makes a choice. What does he want to do about this? What does he want? And, however impulsive and naive, Miles still wants to be able to connect with others. Gwen, and the society, are the gateway for that.
"So then, that is all for the moment Until next time, until then, do not worry And give me just one more chance, one more glance And I will make of you, yeah, I'm gonna make of you another believer" By the mid-point of the story Miles had been eagerly looking towards the society with wide-eyed wonder. It's bizarre, it's strange, and it's wonderful. This belief, I feel, was only reinforced by the battle with The Spot in Mumbattan. He was able to prove himself as a capable figure, saving the day once again, and gaining the respect of Pavitr (and company) for his actions. When he's invited to HQ it's seen as a sign of promotion, almost. As proof that he can handle himself, and that he is recognized as such by those who have the capability to understand what it's like to be in his shoes. But the minute Miles in confronted by Miguel, that all goes out the window. He is openly disregarded, discredited, and told off by someone who is in a "superior" position than him. Because Miles has been exposed to the predicted canon-event of his future, he is able to visualize exactly what this all means. The rhetoric states that his father will die, and that Miles has to let it happen, but that is exactly everything that Miles doesn't stand for- only for him to be told "you don't get to make that decision". Miles openly defies and acts out against the society as soon as he's able to, willing to let go of his desire to connect when it is revealed that his closest allies would've intentionally let his fathers death happen. They even tried to talk him into acceptance, essentially cornering him in a moment where he needed their support. Now, it's him against the multiverse, and all he wants is to prove that he is not defined by whatever the trauma-induced conclusion of a fascistic leader states he is. And the opportunity to pursue that very thing was only made possibly by the assistance of those who saw him, considered him, and decided to do something about what was happening, but it still leaves the door of possibilities wide open.
"You've been on my mind (you've been on my mind) Though it may seem I'm fooling Wasting so much time (wasting so much time) Though it may seem I'm fooling What are we gonna do? (What are we gonna do?) What are we gonna do about it?" Gwen is both inspired by Miles, and driven to act after seeing how he took a leap of faith for something that he loved. This level of love has been present in her all this time, but she was too lost to come to terms with it. This, and her forced expulsion from the society, were her biggest pushes in completing her arc. She is forced to reconcile with her father- the man that loves her so much that he quit his position in favor of her- and they are forced to understand each other. The last time these two had seen one another, he was pointing a gun at her, but now, just the simple fact that they love each other is enough for them to try and find resolve. They want to repair this dissonance, and they are only able to because of how deep their bond is. The sense that, no matter what, they will always love each other, and that's what's important to them. So much so, that her father comes to support her endeavors as Spider-Woman despite the years of rivalry. Miles is still driven at this point by his love for his family, and his father. He very much so holds his parents words about how much they love him, and care about him near and dear to his heart. It is their unwavering devotion to wanting the best for their son- and in particular his mother's last words to him- that gave him the strength to not tolerate the society's treatment of him in the first place. He had the strength to be open to admitting his secret identity to who he thought was his mother, even- something so pivotal to who he sees himself as, as a person. Even when he's tied up and defenseless on a punching bag, he's still not going to give up when he has something to be fighting for. If only his parents knew, though. They're still worried sick and clueless back in their dimension. Gwen turns up in the middle of the night, and to his parent's knowledge was the very last person that knew where he was, only to receive very no answers that only make them worry more. But Gwen made it a point to tell them that she will make sure he gets home- knowing just how important his parents are to him. And his parents, though reluctantly, put their trust in Gwen because of how much they want to see their son come home safe. I like to think that this was extra reassurance for Gwen that she is capable, and that she has the support of alot of people behind her. By this point in her arc, she is no longer lost or unsure of what to do. She just knows what needs to happen, and who she needs to be fighting for. And most importantly, she can fight for him.
The side characters in ATSV also serve as very important reinforcements of certain themes and ideas. Peter B, for example, is very uncertain of his moral position in relation to the society and to Miles. He felt inspired and driven by Miles just as a person- determined and optimistic- but finds himself weighed by a multitude of responsibilities. He has a family, a history with Miguel, a desire to help Miles, and a ton a baggage that the rhetoric of the society only supports. But what is he gonna do about it? What is he doing to change anything- especially when it's needed the most? Gwen merely gives him the opportunity to do something, and he doesn't second-guess where he is needed now. Who needs him, right now. - Hobie is another case of relating to this narrative. He is the one who has seen through the society since day 1, only sticking around in order to watch out for those who needed him, and to work towards dismantling the system that only stood for everything he dedicates his entire life towards hating. He's a revolutionary, after-all. When Miles arrives to HQ, Hobie is already well aware of everything that it means, and what the others have in store. He isn't directly warning, preventing, or making Miles choose anything at the moment, but is nonetheless communicating his speculative nature. Without force, he asks Miles to think for himself in the face of being cornered, and offers avenues for Miles to make his own decisions. To define his own destiny, Hobie asks the question "what are we gonna do about it?". It's a principle that all revolutionaries live by, and Hobie acts as the catalyst for change in this movie. He supports it, he endorses it, and he is a figure who can act as both a voice and as a source of support. He is the one who asks those around him to question the very nature of their actions. - The actions of other notable figures such as Margo cannot be understated, either, despite their small roles in the film. Margo gets very little development, but we see her silent realization, and decision to support Miles when it mattered most, without question, and without really understanding why. She can just see Miles as he is, and make a stand in solidarity with him. I suppose this was the mutual feeling of everyone who decided to team-up at the end of the film, to some extent at least. Everyone who sided with Miles in the end- maybe even Jess if some of you want to argue about it- had to have believed in his cause. The love her carries for his family; the ambitious nature of his to carry the weight of being a hero; the determination to define who he is; the reluctance to back down; and the sheer need to express and connect to those around him. It lives on in all of them, to some degree, otherwise they wouldn't be risking everything just for the chance that what he believes holds some truth to it. Maybe they can do both. They just have to take a chance on him. A leap of faith, if you will.

The only reason that Wittig didn't become a TERF blogger like her contemporaries is that she died too early to make a miserable little Wordpress site. (She certainly never lifted a finger, for decades, as her peers set out projects of exterminating and immiserating trans women)
If you want to see what trajectory Wittig would have taken if she had lived longer, you don't need to look further than Christine Delphy, Wittig's co-“Materialist Feminist” and another big-name radfem who gets the “not like the other girls” treatment
Delphy signed the TERF statement ‘Forbidden Discourse: The Silencing of Feminist Critique of “Gender”’ with the other radfems like Ti-Grace Atkinson in 2013:
mirror of TERF blog with the actual statement
We defend the right of RadFem to exclude men, including M>F trans people, from their feminist meetings and to invite speakers who analyze gender from a feminist perspective. [etc. etc.]
Initiated by Carol Hanisch (NY), Kathy Scarbrough (NJ), Ti-Grace Atkinson (MA), and Kathie Sarachild (NY) Also signed by Roberta Salper (MA), Marjorie Kramer (VT), Jean Golden (MI), Marisa Figueiredo (MA), Maureen Nappi (NY), Sonia Jaffe Robbins (NY), Tobe Levin (Germany), Marge Piercy (MA), Barbara Leon (CA), Anne Forer (AZ), Anselma Dell’Olio (Italy), Carla Lesh (NY), Laura X (CA), Gabrielle Tree (Canada), Christine Delphy (France), Pam Martens (FL), Nellie Hester Bailey (NY), Colette Price (NY), Candi Churchhill (FL), Peggy Powell Dobbins (GA), Annie Tummino (NY), Margo Jefferson (NY), Jennifer Sunderland (NY), Michele Wallace (NJ), Allison Guttu (NY), Sheila Michaels (MO), Carol Giardina (NY), Nicole Hardin (FL), Merle Hoffman (NY), Linda Stein (NY), Margaret Stern (NY), Faith Ringgold (NJ), Joanne Steele (NY)
I don't think trans women actually have any need to “reclaim Radical Feminism.” and to be perfectly blunt, I've already seen this routine with Alyson Escalante & co. in the '10s
In Escalante's case, she eventually backed off of it and abandoned Wittig and her other interests in rehabilitating Radical Feminism. As for others who I followed or had at least seen around online....well, some of the TME ones came out as TERFs. And a few who were trans women literally detransitioned or stopped IDing as transfem to become Male TERF Allies (and also abandoned Marxism at that point)
And Escalante was one of the most popular trans woman on tumblr at the time! in large part because TME people loved that a trans woman was saying radical feminism should be rehabilitated from a materialist lens. it flattered them. including many of her Lesbian Feminist TME mutuals who later came out as TERFs (e.g. Butchcommunist)
And the thing is, I could stomach studying and recommending all of these people's theories if I thought there was any utility, if anything good had come from them, like I do for communists who were homophobic etc., but they just don't have anything useful for us! The greatest impact these radfems have had beyond exterminating trans women has been lending support to increased police violence, caging, surveillance, and deportations of sex workers. A wretched legacy with no redeeming qualities and nothing worth salvaging
The only other thing I can say is that if you are TME, and you specifically seek out trans women who are willing to pay lip service to your favorite TERFs and transmisogynist feminists in general—“finally, one of you who's reasonable about Adrienne Rich!”—other trans women around you will eventually notice and probably won't care much for that

[ID: colored illustration of characters from Across The Spiderverse. From left to right: Margo, Miles, Pavitr, Gwen, and Hobie. Margo has one hand on her hip and is drinking from a mug that says "Byte me". Miles has a teacup on his hands and is looking at Pavitr with a troubled expression and a smile, saying, "Ahah... ow" as Pavitr pats him on the shoulder. Pavitr has his eyes closed and a smile on his face, his arms are around Miles and Gwen's shoulders. Gwen is getting her face smashed against Pavitr's chest and she is watching as her teacup falls to the ground. Hobie is behind Gwen, watching amusedly with his own teacup in hand. / end ID]
