Gathering of Danish and Swedish Royal Families.
At center you can see King Frederick VIII of Denmark, his sister Queen Alexandra, brother King George I of the Hellenes (with his granddaughter Maria Pavlovna the Younger), and sister Maria Feodorovna. Frederick married Louise of Sweden (behind him), and one of their daughters, Ingeborg, married back into the Swedish family herself. Two of her daughters, Margaretha and Martha, are seen here, but her most famous, Astrid, is not.

Royal cousins Princess Ingrid of Sweden (later Queen of Denmark) and Princess Margaretha of Sweden (later Princess of Denmark) along with Princess Margrethe of Bourbon-Parma (also later Princess of Denmark, far left) Gråsten Palace, Denmark, 1936.
I love, love, love Ingrid’s big smile. She usually appeared so formal and unemotional in public so seeing her smiling is so sweet.

I was looking through Helen Azar's Maria book for something else, and stumbled on this letter from Margaretha of Sweden (sister of the more-famous Astrid), who was almost exactly Maria's age (born 25 June 1899)
4 June 1915
Dear Marie, I thank you so very much for your kind letter. Now I have put up my hair too and you did it so much earlier. Much love to you all from us. Many kisses from your loving cousin Margaretha
Please write soon.
This certainly seems to be a reference to Maria putting her hair up earlier than is traditional, although Margaretha would not have been sixteen yet herself in early June, only turning sixteen toward the end of the month.
Still no reason for why Maria started wearing her hair up before she turned sixteen, but an acknowledgement of it from a contemporary.

Royal Tiara Challenge 2024: Favourite Swedish Tiara
Tumblr media
Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara
A favourite of many, this tiara looks fabulous on anyone who wears it. Originally owned by Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden, it now belongs to her granddaughter, Princess Margaretha. Luckily for us, the Swedes are fond of sharing with Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine and Princess Christina as regular wearers. It was last worn in January for the State Visit from France by Princess Christina.
