"Sounds sind die neuen Hashtags". Wie TikTok die Pop-Landschaft verändert

Die Video-App TikTok gibt ein schwindelerregendes Tempo vor. Wer sich als Musiker*in darauf einlässt, muss mit geänderten Rahmenbedingungen zurecht kommen.  

Es ist ein heißer Augustabend in Wien – 2019. Im Flex steht Mitski auf der Bühne und im Publikum stehen Menschen in ihren Zwanzigern und Dreißigern, die dem Indie-Darling huldigen. Nichts deutet darauf hin, dass ein halbes Jahr später die Welt Kopf steht. Oder dass das Publikum beim nächsten Wien-Besuch der Musikerin keine Tickets mehr bekommen wird, weil das Konzert im Nu ausverkauft ist. Was ist da passiert? Die Erklärung für den Hype um Mitski steht 2022 schon mittags im WUK Schlange. Es sind Jugendliche, die in Gruppen oder in Begleitung ihrer Eltern angereist sind, mit viel Eyeliner und in 90er-Revival-Mode gekleidet. Sie haben Blumen für die Künstlerin mitgebracht und eine Playlist für die Wartezeit, die unbeeindruckt von traditionellen Genrezuschreibungen alles abdeckt, was zwischen Lana del Rey und Harry Styles Stimmung macht. Für viele von ihnen ist es ihr allererstes Konzert. Sie haben Mitski während der Pandemie nicht im Radio, auf YouTube oder Spotify entdeckt, sondern auf TikTok. Die App des chinesischen Konzerns Bytedance ist mit über einer Milliarde aktiven User*innen aktuell die tonangebende Plattform.

Stefanie Hübel ist ehemalige TikTok-Mitarbeiterin. Sie hat in Berlin Unternehmen zum Start ihrer TikTok-Channels beraten und mittlerweile in Wien die Agentur Viral Social Club gegründet. Und sie findet, dass man den Einfluss der Plattform auf die Gesellschaft derzeit gar nicht überschätzen kann: »Wenn du die Jugendlichen auf der Straße anschaust – jeder Modetrend, jeder Musiktrend – alles kommt von TikTok. Das ist eine Jugendkultur, die ich so noch nicht gesehen habe.« Was unterscheidet das neue Leitmedium von den vorangegangenen Social Media des Web 2.0? Zum einen, dass die Eigenwahrnehmung gar nicht die eines Sozialen Mediums ist. »TikTok ist eine Entertainment-Plattform. Da finden Dinge statt, die nicht auf Instagram passieren. TikTok ist eine Riesencommunity«, meint Hübel und streicht damit hervor, dass nicht Updates der eigenen Freund*innen im Vordergrund stehen, sondern das, was global angesagt ist und der Algorithmus auf Basis der individuellen Interessen der User*innen in den Start-Screen, die sogenannte For-You-Page, spült. 

Wer in der App erfolgreich sein will, muss kurze, knackige Videos posten, die ab der ersten Sekunde fesseln, denn die nächste »Creation«, der nächste »Tok« sind nur einen Swipe entfernt. Wer witzig ist, ist klar im Vorteil. Das können User*innen wie Toxische Pommes, Wurstaufschnitt, Bruman Rockner und Satans Bratan bestätigen, die mit ihrem satirischen Blick auf Österreich und seine diversen Communities regelmäßig viral gehen. Aber auch für Musiker*innen gibt es Möglichkeiten, aufzufallen: »Jedes Video hat einen Sound hinterlegt. Die App ist einfach sound-lastig. Man kann sagen, dass Sounds die neuen Hashtags sind«, so Hübel. Vor dem Rebranding hieß die Plattform gar musical.ly und war vor allem für Lipsync- und Choreographie-Videos bekannt. 

How to viral?

Diesen Umstand machen sich etablierte Acts wie Lizzo zunutze, die ihre Neuveröffentlichungen neuerdings mit eigens auf die Community maßgeschneiderten Choreos zu passend ausgewählten Song-Snippets promoten. Richtig spannend wird der Algorithmus aber erst, wenn die viralen Momente nicht von den eh schon Berühmten kommen, sondern von unbeteiligten Dritten wie dem User Nathan Apodaca, der im Alleingang den Fleetwood-Mac-Song »Dreams« 43 Jahre nach seiner Veröffentlichung zurück in die Charts katapultierte. Er hatte damit ein Video untermalt, in dem er im Morgengrauen Skateboard fährt und Cranberrysaft trinkt, und so wohl einen Nerv getroffen. Stefanie Hübel meint dazu: »Dieses Video war zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Du musst gar keine Absicht haben und plötzlich ist der Song wieder in den Charts und das Getränk in allen Supermärkten ausverkauft.«

Aber was tun, wenn man noch nicht berühmt ist und auch nicht auf den zufällig durch die Decke gehenden User Generated Content warten möchte? »Das ist die Lieblingsfrage meiner Kund*innen«, erzählt die TikTok-Beraterin Hübel. »Wie gehe ich denn jetzt viral und wie werden meine Videos gesehen? Natürlich kann man das fördern, indem man sehr viel und regelmäßig Content postet und auf Trends achtet. Aber so ein richtiges Erfolgsrezept gibt es nicht. Es ist ein Glücksmoment.« Dieser Meinung ist auch Petra Albrecht, die beim weltweit zweitgrößten Majorlabel Sony Music für die Vermarktung der lokalen Signings Granada, W1ZE und Freude zuständig ist und internationale Acts von Arcade Fire bis Robbie Williams betreut: »Ich kann einen viralen Moment oder ein Momentum nicht erzwingen. Was ja auch gut ist, weil eine gewisse Chancengleichheit herrscht, wenn du ein kreativer Kopf bist.« Das hindert freilich Künstler*innen und ihre Labels nicht daran, es trotzdem zu versuchen.

Content-Maschinerie

Manchen Musiker*innen geht genau das gehörig gegen den Strich. Es sind nämlich nicht die Datenschutzverstöße, Spionagevorwürfe und Zensur auf der chinesischen Plattform, an denen sie sich stoßen. Acts wie Halsey und FKA Twigs beschweren sich darüber, dass ihre Labels ständig viralen TikTok-Content verlangen. Derlei Vorwürfe würde die Sony-Produktmanagerin Albrecht nicht gelten lassen. Zur Zusammenarbeit mit Artists sagt sie: »Wir sprechen Empfehlungen aus und entwickeln dann gemeinsam Content und Formate. Hier ist es immer ganz wichtig, dass sich die Artists mit den Inhalten wohlfühlen und wir Hand in Hand und auf Augenhöhe zusammenarbeiten.«

Wenn ein Act dem TikTok-Marketing zustimmt, kann dabei so eine Erfolgsgeschichte wie die von Gayle rausschauen. Mit der Nummer »abcdefu« schaffte die Newcomerin es an die Spitze der weltweiten Singlecharts. Begonnen hat ihr Siegeszug mit der scheinbar spontanen Frage einer Userin, ob sie einen Trennungssong schreiben könne, in dem das Alphabet vorkommt. Die oddly specific Vorgabe beantwortet die Sängerin mit einem »I got you« und stimmt den bereits perfekt auskomponierten Hitsong an. Später stellte sich freilich heraus, dass die Userin mit der witzigen Idee nicht irgendeine Followerin, sondern Mitarbeiterin ihrer Plattenfirma war. Und dass der Zauber eines authentisch wirkenden Geistesblitzes durchaus geplant werden kann. 

Fehlende Ehrlichkeit

Auch im deutschsprachigen Raum gibt es mittlerweile Labels, die virale TikTok-Strategien entwickeln, um ihren noch unbekannten Artists zum Durchbruch zu verhelfen. Sie halten sich dabei schön im Hintergrund, damit alles ganz organisch wirkt. On the record sprechen möchte man darüber aber nicht. Das würde wohl den Zauber entlarven.

Was für Lizzo funktioniert hat, hat auch die Berliner Künstlerin Domiziana zuerst an die Spitze der TikTok Trends und von da in die höchsten Ränge der Singlecharts gebracht. Ihre Debütsingle »Ohne Benzin« wird von ihrem Label als von Hyperpop beeinflusster Clubkid-Sound vermarktet. Für TikTok hat man eine »1,1x Speed Version« produziert und einen mit Bedacht gewählten Songausschnitt zur Nutzung auf der Plattform freigegeben. Die offizielle Version der Geschichte geht so: Nicht näher genannte User*innen verbreiten eine Choreo dazu und über Nacht wird die Nummer zum viralen Hit, der den Soundtrack für mehr als 100.000 Kurzvideos liefert. Wie zum Beweis, dass das alles gar nicht geplant war, macht schließlich auch Domiziana selbst den Tanz nach. Untertitel: “Du hast den Song rausgebracht aber kannst nicht dazu tanzen”.

Nur wird in dem Narrativ ein Detail weggelassen, nämlich dass die virale Choreo nicht von irgendwem, sondern von Marek Fritz gepostet wurde, seines Zeichens Influencer für Comedy-, Tanz- und Gen-Z-Content. Er wird von der Berliner Agentur Labs Management vertreten und hat 1,4 Millionen TikTok-Follower*innen. Und wo Influencer*innen mit Managementverträgen sind, ist Influencer-Marketing nicht weit. Für eine derartige Reichweite fließt üblicherweise eine großzügige Summe Geld. 

Lizzo, Gayle und Domiziana sind Erfolgsbeispiele, deren Vermarktung auf TikTok besonders gut funktioniert hat. Die Videoplattform verändert aber längst nicht mehr nur in Einzelfällen die Arbeit von Labels und Musiker*innen. Ihr immenser Einfluss auf die Jugendkultur macht die App zum idealen Werbeumfeld. Für Petra Albrecht ist es daher ein weiterer Kanal, um ihre Sony-Acts zu platzieren: »Genauso wie bei anderen Plattformen kannst du Werbeeinschaltungen machen und Posts boosten. Ich habe auf TikTok aber auch neue Möglichkeiten der Promotion, man kann zum Beispiel die Duettfunktion nutzen, um mit anderen Leuten zu kollaborieren. Es ist eine sehr schnelllebige Plattform, die nach ständigem Monitoring verlangt. Das hat sich stark verändert.«

Die Schnelllebigkeit des unersättlichen Algorithmus stellt nicht nur Halsey und FKA Twigs vor die Frage: Was hat die Fähigkeit, engaging Videocontent am Fließband zu produzieren, überhaupt noch mit dem Musikmachen zu tun? Den Fokus weg vom Talent hin zur Selbstvermarktung, das Credo der Authentizität, die kurze Aufmerksamkeitsspanne – all das hat TikTok nicht erfunden, aber brutal weitergesponnen. Das ist zumindest eine Sichtweise. Als jemand, deren Job Musikpromotion ist, hat Albrecht naturgemäß einen anderen Blick auf die Entwicklung: »Content zu erstellen war früher viel komplizierter. Ein Artist kann heute dank solcher Plattformen Inhalte zunächst selbst erstellen und sich so gut eine Community aufbauen.« Freilich: »Es gibt auch Artists, die ohne Social Media durch die Decke gehen. Aber TikTok ist einfach ein Ding mehr, das man nutzen kann.«

There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? Season 2 can be watched without season 1 because of independent stories but Netflix should carry it if you are interested in season 1 as well.

The second season of Charité jumps right into the early 1940s. The war, the nazis and the work of the surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch and the psychiatrist Max de Crinis are the historical frame for the fictional story of the medicine student Anni Waldhauser, her husband Artur and her brother Otto Marquardt. A story that explores morals and ambitions and raises the question what you would have done in their place.

CANTLON: PACK HOST THE BRUINS AGAIN FRIDAY NIGHT

BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - During the first six weeks of the regular season, the Hartford Wolf Pack are rarely in the confines of the XL Center. On Friday night, they will have one of their rare home games over the span against a familiar opponent, the Providence Bruins, who return to the XL Center as part of a weekend home-and-home between the two teams. On opening night, the Pack knocked off the Bruins 4-2 and are coming off a tough road loss, the first of this young season, on Wednesday night, 5-3, against the Binghamton Devils. “We were happy with our early results, but it's still early for us. It's still just two games,“ remarked head coach Keith McCambridge last Sunday. Tuesday saw the Devils score in the first and last minute of the first period. Defenseman John Gilmour said that he has to get on the puck and want it more than the other guy on Sunday after the Laval game. The goaltending of Dustin Tokarski immediately caught the team's eye. “He clearly impressed us the way he stopped shot. We are very confident having him and (Marek) Mazanec back there,” said Gilmour. Scoring in the first period has been good so far through the early part of the new season, a 180 degree turn from last season. “It's so critical to get off to quick starts. These two games, we have to keep it going to have success,” Gilmour, who saw the Pack outscored by a wide margin in the first period last season and got caught in that pattern on Wednesday night, said. The team's ability to respond quickly to their opponents is something else that he likes in this group. “It shows character and resiliency, and to see it in a young group like that, it's very good to see.” Tokarski is a seasoned AHL vet having had stops in Norfolk, St. John’s, Syracuse, Hamilton, San Diego, and last year in Lehigh Valley. Tokarski is as competitive as the next player, but clearly becoming a mentor is as valuable a tool he could bring to the rink along with his pads, stick, and glove. “You take it as a responsibility. Everybody is young once. As you get older, as I am, you try to do a bit extra to help the young guys to improve, get better and get to the NHL. That’s part of the job.” The Pack then will embark on a four-game road trip Saturday over seven days starting in Providence Saturday night. They then have their Canadian road trip to play Laval next Wednesday followed by Belleville on Friday and then finishing with Toronto. The Pack then return with a mid-week game against Lehigh Valley and their first meeting of the season with their intra-state and franchise rivals, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before taking off on a five-game road trip. NEWS & NOTES: Former Yale Bulldog goalie Alex Lyon was sent to Lehigh Valley on Wednesday by the Flyers. Joel Bouchard clearly exudes the sense that the new Laval coach is looking to buy into the new pro game model and working it to convey that to a thoroughly revamped Laval Rocket. “We worked very hard, but it’s a major learning curve for results. This was a good learning experience for this team and our guys. You have to learn to play back-to-back games quickly, and that is an adjustment at this level. We have to learn to stick with it. It's gonna take time, but I will say they work hard, no complaints there. We got to learn better puck management, and that will take time. Mea culpa: A business should own up to customer service flub

NEW YORK — Erika Wasser and her staffers arrived for a big appointment — hair and makeup for a bridal party of 11 — to realize someone had goofed and the salon space they share in a Miami hotel wasn’t available that day. And the bride was expected in an hour.

“We messed up HUGE,” is how Wasser, owner of nine Glam+Go salons in three cities, remembers the Saturday a year ago. She quickly pulled out her credit card, reserved a suite in the hotel, and “the bridal party and our team literally transported everything — dryers, chairs, everything basically not nailed down — from our salon and recreated an en suite Glam+Go.”

“If there’s ever a day you don’t want don’t want to mess up,” Wasser says, “it’s a wedding.”

Misunderstandings, mistakes and breakdowns can happen at any company — including a giant like Amazon, which had the embarrassment of its website not working properly at the start of its much-advertised Prime Day. Small business owners know they might not be able to survive negative reviews on social media, so when they have customer service disasters they need to try to not just mollify customers but please or even thrill them.

Luckily for Wasser, the bridal party wanted to help, so the move was accomplished quickly. When the bride arrived, everyone told her she’d gotten a free upgrade. Wasser, who usually charges for champagne at bridal appointments, paid for as much as everyone wanted. A disaster became a memorable party.

Facing a disaster of their own, Davis Smith and Brandon Carter fielded a phone call that Smith calls panic-inducing.

The young entrepreneurs, who were cleaning grills in Austin, Texas, last year while preparing to start their company, inadvertently scratched a customer’s backyard grill.

“He was furious because we had ruined his grill, he said. We tried to offer a refund or a free cleaning but nothing consoled his loss,” Davis says.

The two realized the solution was buying the customer a new $600 grill. Although their College Grill Cleaners business had only made $2,000 so far, the new grill turned out to be an investment in the future.

“The customer was extremely understanding, happy with how we handled the situation,” Davis says. The man also posted a positive review online and referred neighbours to the company, which now has branches in the Dallas area and Houston.

When they mess up, companies should focus on building relationships rather than apologizing profusely, says Paul Fombelle, a marketing professor at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. At the same time, owners shouldn’t ask, “what can we do to make you happy,” the equivalent of a blank check.

Fombelle’s suggestion is to say, “We screwed up. We want to keep you as a customer. Here are two options for what we can do now.” In trying to mitigate the damage, owners also shouldn’t make promises they won’t be able to keep.

“You’ll be failing two times in a row,” Fombelle says.

When an angry customer calls or shows up, owners or employees should listen, not be defensive or condescending and not say, “I can’t help you,” says Nancy Friedman, who runs The Telephone Doctor, a customer service consulting firm. Staffers who don’t know how to respond should say, “I’ll get someone to help you.” And no one should ever make the customer feel like they’re being a pain.

“You need to make someone feel that they matter,” Friedman says.

Sometimes, even good service can’t get the resolution a customer wants.

John Holloway’s insurance brokerage, NoExam.com, was honest with a customer from the get-go: He might not get a life insurance policy because he’d had cancer 10 years earlier.

Holloway and his business partner, Jonathan Fritz, searched for an insurer they thought would be a good match and helped the customer with the application. After he was rejected, the customer called to vent once or twice a week for several weeks, and kept Fritz on the phone for up to half an hour.

“He (Fritz) would explain to him over and over again what the situation was, that we did our best,” says Holloway, whose company is based in Roswell, Georgia. While the calls were difficult, Fritz persevered.

“We easily could have avoided him, but that could have led to online complaints,” Holloway says. Eventually, the customer stopped calling.

When trying to right a wrong, late can still be better than never. Kimberly Marek discovered that a staffer assigned to monitor a customer service phone line didn’t — for two months. Marek, co-owner of online jewelry retailer 7 Charming Sisters, the other owners and employees combed customer records to see if any of the 25 people had also emailed the Fredericksburg, Virginia-based company and gotten what they needed.

All but three did. Marek called them, including one who had been waiting seven weeks.

“They were frustrated but understanding, and they were taken aback by me calling personally and apologizing,” Marek says. She followed up with gift bags and handwritten notes.

And sometimes, a crisis resolved can have a bonus in the end. After the wedding party was on its way to the ceremony, Wasser invited her salon manager to spend the afternoon and evening in the suite she’d paid $800 for.

“We stayed there drinking wine and watching movies,” Wasser says.

The war, the nazis and the work of the surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch and the psychiatrist Max de Crinis are the historical frame for the fictional story of the medicine student Anni Waldhauser, her husband Artur and her brother Otto Marquardt. A story that explores morals and ambitions and raises the question what you would have done in their place.

Vencedora dos mais importantes concursos internacionais de violino, a chinesa Yi-Jia Susanne Hou desembarca no Rio de Janeiro pela primeira vez, para apresentação única no Theatro Municipal. Ao lado do renomado pianista brasileiro Eduardo Monteiro, vai apresentar obras de Beethoven, Ravel, Astor Piazzolla, entre outros compositores. O concerto acontece dia 11 de agosto, às 20h30. Yi-Jia Susanne Hou alcançou fama no cenário mundial da música clássica ao vencer, por unanimidade, três prestigiosos concursos internacionais: Long-Thibaud, na França; Lipizer, na Itália; e Sarasarte, na Espanha.

Um dos mais atuantes pianistas brasileiros, o carioca Eduardo Monteiro é reconhecido pela crítica como um dos maiores expoentes do cenário pianístico nacional.

Master class para jovens de projeto social

No dia seguinte ao concerto (dia 12/8), às 15h, a violinista chinesa irá ministrar uma master class para jovens integrantes da Orquestra Maré do Amanhã, na Sala Cecília Meireles. Criado em 2010, o projeto – também patrocinado pela State Grid Brazil Holding – atende crianças e jovens da comunidade da Maré, no Rio Janeiro, formando músicos e promovendo inclusão social.

Sobre Yi-Jia Susanne Hou

Considerada pela crítica mundial uma das mais extraordinárias artistas da atualidade, já percorreu o mundo como solista das principais orquestras em mais de 50 países, tocando sob a regência de Mtislav Rostropovich, Pinchas Zukerman, Alan Gilbert, Vladimir Spivakov Marek e Janowski à frente da Filarmônica de Londres, Radio-France, SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, WDR de Colonia, Orquestra Nacional Checa, Sinfônica de Toronto, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Cingapura e Tóquio Philharmonic Symphony entre muitas outras.

Suzanne realizou recentemente o sonho de toda sua vida, gravando o Concerto para Violino de Beethoven com a London Symphony Orchestra, em tributo a uma história extraordinária de 300 anos, a história de um excepcional violino de 1735 que já pertenceu a Fritz Kreisler, Mary Portman, Giuseppe Guarnerie Del Gesù. No período em que foi possuidor desse lendário instrumento Kreisler compôs as Cadenzas incluídas nesse concerto para violino de Beethoven.

Nas telas do cinema, Suzanne atuou por duas vezes com o diretor e autor Atom Egoyan, indicado ao Oscar, e com o compositor Mychael Danna, ganhador do Oscar. Ela tocou os solos para violino em “Adoration”, que lhe renderam o Ecumenical Jury Prizeno Festival de Cannes, e também no filme “Remember”, estrelado por Christopher Plummer e Martin Landau, e exibido em 2015.

Eduardo já compartilhou sua música com platéias exigentes em importantes palcos do Brasil e do mundo, como o Wigmore Hall de Londres, Grande Sala do Conservatório Tchaikovsky de Moscou, Philharmonie de Colônia, Gasteig de Munique, Sala Verdi de Milão, Liceo de Barcelona, Auditório Nacional de Madrid, National Concert Hall de Dublin, Opera House da Universidade de Houston e Jordan Hall de Boston.

Dentre os Maestros com os quais se apresentou destacam-se: Yuri Temirkanov, Mariss Jansons, Dimitri Kitayenko, Philippe Entremont, Arnold Katz, Sergiu Comisiona, Emil Tabakov, Kirk Trevor, Asher Fisch, Isaac Karabitchevsky, John Neschling, Roberto Minczuk, Fábio Mechetti, Roberto Tibiriçá e Eleazar de Carvalho.
