LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 25, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 26, 2024
“I am in shock that a lawyer stood in the U.S. Supreme Court and said that a president could assassinate his political opponent and it would be immune as ‘an official act,’” lawyer Marc Elias, whose firm defends democratic election laws, wrote today on social media. He added: “I am in despair that several Justices seemed to think this answer made perfect sense.”
Elias was referring to the argument of Trump’s lawyer before the Supreme Court today that it could indeed be an “official act” for which a president should be immune from criminal prosecution if “the president decides that his rival is a corrupt person and he orders the military or orders someone to assassinate him.”
The Supreme Court today heard close to three hours of oral argument over Trump v. United States, which concerns former president Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from criminal charges for “official acts”: in this case, his attempt to overturn the lawful results of the 2020 presidential election and to stay in office against the will of the voters.
That is, like the authoritarian leaders he admires, Trump tried to steal the 2020 presidential election and seize the presidency. Sometimes I worry that the enormity of that crime against our democracy is becoming normalized.
It was not normalized by grand jury members who reviewed the evidence of that effort; they indicted Trump in August 2023 on four counts. But Trump responded by claiming that a president cannot be prosecuted for official acts and that a former president cannot be prosecuted unless the House of Representatives has impeached him and the Senate convicted him.
Justice Clarence Thomas, whose wife, Ginni, participated in that effort, did not recuse himself from today’s hearing, and the court did not object to his presence.
Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post noted that the justices on the court seemed to be weighing “which poses the greater risk—putting a criminal president above the law or hamstringing noncriminal presidents with the risk of frivolous or vindictive prosecutions brought by their successors.”
The liberals on the court focused on the former—after all, the case is about whether Trump should answer to criminal indictments for trying to overturn our democracy. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson noted: “If someone with those kinds of powers, the most powerful person in the world with the greatest amount of authority, could go into office knowing that there would be no potential penalty for committing crimes, I’m trying to understand what the disincentive is from turning the Oval Office into, you know, the seat of criminal activity in this country.”
In contrast, the right-wing justices focused on the risk of vindictive prosecutions, which has been the heart of Trump’s argument for complete immunity. Trump insists that without immunity, a president will be afraid to make controversial decisions out of fear of later prosecution. Such a lack of immunity would destroy the presidency, he has argued, claiming that he is simply trying to protect the office.
And yet he is the first of 45 presidents to be charged with a crime, and no previous president made any claim of immunity.
Nonetheless, the right-wing justices made it clear they were more interested in the future than in the present. In their comments they stayed far away from Trump and focused instead on presidents in the past and the future. (Conservative judge Michael Luttig noted: “The Court and the parties discussed everything but the specific question presented.”)
Justice Neil Gorsuch said: “I’m not concerned about this case, but I am concerned about future uses of the criminal law to target political opponents based on accusations about their motives.” Justice Samuel Alito tried to turn the argument for accountability upside down by suggesting that complete immunity would be more likely to encourage presidents to leave office, because if a president knew they could be prosecuted for crimes, they would be less likely to leave peacefully.
Indeed, Marcus wrote: “The conservative justices’ professed concerns over the implications of their rulings for imaginary future presidents, in imaginary future proceedings, seemed more important to them than bringing Trump to justice.” Constitutional law professor Anthony Michael Kreis was more concrete in his reaction; he found it “[u]nbelievable that Supreme Court justices who see forgiving student loans, mandating vaccines, and regulating climate change as a slippery slope toward tyranny were not clear-eyed on questions of whether a president could execute citizens or stage a coup without being prosecuted.”
The court’s decision will likely take weeks and thus will delay Trump’s trial for crimes committed in his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, likely until after the 2024 election. On Monday, April 22, former representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), who served as vice chair of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, called out Trump’s attacks on the legal system and delays to avoid accountability. In a New York Times op-ed, Cheney reminded the justices that delay would mean that the American people would not get to hear the testimony and evidence Special Counsel Jack Smith has uncovered before the 2024 election.
“It cannot be that a president of the United States can attempt to steal an election and seize power but our justice system is incapable of bringing him to trial before the next election four years later,” she wrote.
And yet, here we are.
Voters’ right to know what a candidate for president did to overthrow the will of the people in a previous election is at stake in today’s arguments. But so is the rule of law on which our democracy stands. The rule of law means that laws are made according to established procedures rather than a leader’s dictates, and that they are reasonable. Laws are enforced equally. No one is above the law, and everyone has an obligation to obey the law.
As Justice Elena Kagan noted today: “The framers did not put an immunity clause into the Constitution. They knew how to; there were immunity clauses in some state constitutions. They didn’t provide immunity to the president. And, you know—not so surprising—they were reacting against a monarch who claimed to be above the law. Wasn’t the whole point that the president was not a monarch and the president was not supposed to be above the law?”
Indeed.
“[W]here, say some, is the King of America?” Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense, the 1776 pamphlet that convinced British colonists in North America to cut ties with their king and start a new nation. “[I]n America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other.”

Top 5 informative books you need to read if you like physics
A brief history of time. From the big bang to black holes, by Stephen Hawking. This is kind of the obvious one, but it is for a good reason. It's a short summary of the history of physics and how the view of science changed over the years. The first one I read, although right now it is a bit outdated.
The elegant universe, by Brian B. Greene. This is quite a big book about everything cool in physics such as relativity, string theory and everything we know about the universe so far.
The Quantum Universe: Everything That Can Happen Does Happen, by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw. This is a great book if you're into quantum physics. It is very easy to read and every phenomena is well explained.
The Universe in Your Hand. A Journey through Space, Time and Beyond, by Christophe Galfard. If you know nothing about physics and you want an easy read, this book's for you. Similar to the former one but explained in a much more informative way.
What We Cannot Know, by Marcus du Sautoy. My absolute fav book about physics. It's a journey of every boundary we have in the knowledge of physics and everything we don't know and might never know. Really makes you want to go into reasearch and find those answers yourself!

MAG (Potentially) Web-Related Events Timeline
(expanded from a previous post. ??? indicate extreme uncertainty about timing.)
1950s-1960s: Raymond Fielding runs a halfway house for troubled kids in Oxford, out of his home at 105 Hilltop Road. He owns a table with a hypnotic pattern on it (”Burned Out,” “Recluse”). The Cult of the Lightless Flame send Agnes Montague to him, and the Web (maybe) binds her to Ray/the house (”Chosen,” “Infectious Doubts.”)
c. 1970s: Neil Lagorio and “Gabe” split up; Neil no longer works in stop-motion after this. (”The Puppeteer”) (Same Gabriel who became the Worker-in-Clay?)
1974: The Fielding House burns down. Fielding’s body is recovered, mimus one hand, which Agnes has kept. Gertrude Robinson finds a box of Agnes’s hair in the ashes. This seems to be point at which the House becomes a “wound in reality.” (”Burned Out,” “Chosen,” “Infectious Doubt.”)
c. 1975? Gertrude performs a ritual that binds her to Agnes, preventing Agnes from performing the Desolation’s ascension ritual. She says the Web tricked her into it. (”Infectious Doubt.”)
c. 1990s???: Annebelle Cane, if she can be believed, encountered a drug addict, covered in spiders, weaving at a wooden loom hidden in an abandoned chip shop. The experience engenders in her a phobia of spiders. (”Weaver”)
c. 1995/1996: Jonathan Sims reads “A Guest for Mr. Spider” and is almost taken by the Web.
c. early 2001: Adelard Dekker binds the Not-Them to the Fielding’s hypnotic table from Hilltop Road. (”The Distant Cousin.”)
November 25, 2006: Ivo Lensik uproots the tree at 105 Hilltop Road, and uncovers the spider apple at its roots (”Burned Out”). In Sheffield, Agnes Montague commits ritual suicide, which involves a box of spiders and the severed hand of Ray Fielding (”Burned Out,” “Burning Desire”).
Late fall 2010: Annabelle Cane participates in an ESP study at Surrey University in Guildford. She becomes a Web avatar and disappears; over the next few years other study participants also vanish. (”Thought for the Day”)
c. 2011??: Neil Lagorio, succumbing to an unknown form of paralysis, becomes unable to leave his home in Connecticuit. (”Creature Feature”). A former colleague, Alison Killala, moves in with him to care for him. Neil remarks with sadness that he’ll never get to work on his final project, “The Dancer” (”The Puppeteer”). (Both Nikola Orsinov and the Mechanical Turk were referred to as “the Dancer” in the context of the Unknowing.)
c. early 2012??: Annabelle Cane visits Neil Lagorio. Alison Killala spends five months watching Neil’s “original cuts,” and emerges to find Neil dead. Annabelle orders her to turn over Neil’s “original cuts” to the Magnus Institute. (”The Puppeteer”)
c. February 2012: Dexter Banks and around one hundred cast members vanish from the set of his film “Widow’s Weave,” on the same day the news of Neil Lagorio’s death broke in the press. Every year since, in February, one corpse washed up on a nearby beach. (”Creature Feature”)
March 14, 2012: Alexia Crawley gives her statement regarding Dexter Bank’s last film. (”Creature Feature”)
December 1, 2012: Alison Killala delivers Neil’s films to the Magnus Institute, on Annabelle’s orders; they’re placed in Artefact Storage. (”The Puppeteer”)
February 23, 2014: Jane Prentiss comes to the Magnus Institute and gives a statement about the “wasp’s nest” in the attic of her building in Archway. She mentions the spiders there as well. Shortly thereafter, she becomes a Corruption avatar and disappears (”Hive”). Arthur Nolan, formerly of the Lightless Flame, self-immolates in order to destroy the remaining nest. (”Pest Control.”)
Late 2014: Carlos Vittery freaks out about the spiders in his garden and moves to a new flat, in Archway. He notes that the building is infested with small, silver worms, suggesting Jane Prentiss is already using the building’s basement as a hiding spot. (”Arachnophobia”)
c. 1 February 2015: A woman in Guildford (probably Annabelle Cane) hires Greg Cox to develop a forum called “Chelicerae” for her, where people can submit stories about weird things that have happened to them to “the Story-Spinner”. One of Probably-Annabelle’s requirements is that Greg inserts certain names or phrases into the code, though not in ways that would normally have any effect on the site. One of the names is Carlos Vittery’s. (”Web Development”) (It’s noted that when Annabelle emails Greg, she uses very large fonts.)
March 15, 2015: Gertrude Robinson disappears, leaving a tremendous amount of blood behind in the Archives. She is later found shot to death in the tunnels beneath the Archives. (”Human Remains”)
April 9, 2015: Vittery gives his statement about a “ghost spider” to the Institute, and “shortly thereafter” is found dead, wrapped in spiderwebs. (”Arachnophobia”)
August 1, 2015: Angie Santos gives her statement after she and Greg are attacked near his flat by some kind of spider-thing. She states Greg has been working on the Chelicerae for about six months. (”Web Development”)
Autumn 2015: Jonathan Sims is appointed the new Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute (”Web Development” implies this happened after Angie Santos’ statement.)
c. Late 2015: Jared Hopworth begins receiving letters, typed in very large fonts, directing him towards potential victims and allies. He initially ignores them, but eventually comes to trust the letter-writer. (”Flesh”)
February 26, 2016: Martin goes to Carlos Vittery’s former building in Archway to follow up on his statement. He notices spiders in the basement, decides to explore, and discovers Prentiss hiding there. She follows him home and besieges his flat for approximately two weeks. (”Colony”)
Late March - July 12, 2016: Prentiss occupies the tunnels beneath the Magnus Institute and begins breeding worms. Various people mention seeing the worms outside the building. (”Schwarzwald,” “A Distortion,” “First Hunt,” “Anatomy Class”)
Mid-to-Late July 2016 (between 12th and 29th): Jon spots worms inside the Archives seemingly for the first time. Breekon and Hope deliver a package directly to the archives addressed to Jon (”Old Passages”) containing a Zippo lighter with a spiderweb design on it (”Taken Ill”) as well as Fielding’s Web table. Jon is adamant that he doesn’t smoke, though Elias mentions in “Infestation” that he (Jon) used to.
Late July 2016: Greg Cox goes missing. (”Web Development”)
July 29th, 2016: Jon attempts to kill a spider in his office and accidentally knocks a hole in the drywall, revealing an entrance to the tunnels under the Institute. Prentiss attacks, possibly earlier than she had planned for, and is killed when Elias activates the archives’ fire suppression system. During the attack, a mass of worms create some kind of gateway or portal in a wall in the tunnels, warping the stone. (”Lost and Found”/”Infestation”/”Human Remains.”)
August 2016: Jon sneaks into the tunnels to explore and notes there are a LOT of dead worms down there (”Too Deep”).
Late September 2016: Jon notes that an awful lot of spiders have moved into the tunnels under the Institute and appear to have eaten all the dead worms. (”Literary Heights”)
February 16, 2017: Jon destroys the Web table binding the Not-Them (”The Distant Cousin”) and then takes a badly-timed cigarette break while Elias commits brutal pipe murder (”The Librarian”). (In “Hide and Seek,” Tim makes a jibe about Jon sneaking cigarettes in “Hide and Seek,” implying he’s been doing so for a while before this.)
April 28, 2017: Daisy takes Jon out to the New Forest with the intent of killing him. She comments on his spiderweb lighter when she searches him. (”The Coming Storm”)
June 30, 2017: Gerard Keay comments on Jon’s lighter, asking if he’s a “spider freak.” (”Family Business”) (According to “First Aid,” Gerry at one point had a similar zippo with an Eye design on it ...)
August 6-7, 2017: The Unknowing. Jon remarks that “there’s no such thing as just cobwebs” while they explore the House of Wax, right before they stumble upon a stray tape recorder. (”The Masquerade”)
c. mid-December 2017: Jared Hopworth is directed by his letter-writer to attack the Archives, and given a photograph of Jon with instructions to kill him. He is stopped by Melanie and Helen. (”Flesh”)
February 15, 2018: “The spiders” send Oliver Banks to talk Jon out of his coma (”Far Away”)
c. February 24, 2018: Jon remarks that he’s seeing cobwebs everywhere he goes, and takes this to mean the Institute is being watched. (”Civilian Casualties”)
c. March 17, 2018: Jon finds the tape about the Last Feast, covered in cobwebs, in his desk, deducing that it was delivered by spiders. (”Meat”).
March 20, 2018: Jon meets with Jared Hopworth and learns the context of the attack from December (”Flesh”).
March 24-27, 2018: Jon goes into the coffin to rescue Daisy. At some point, Martin sneaks down into the Archives and sets up several dozen tape recorders to play statements, which are enough of an anchor for Jon to escape (”Entombed”). Martin tells Peter in “Time of Revelations” that he doesn’t know where he got the idea from.
c. April, 2018: Daisy asks Jon point-blank where he got the spider lighter from, and he doesn’t answer the question. There is Some Static this time. (”The Puppeteer.”)
c. early July 2018: Jon is “drawn” to rearrange a filing cabinet and discovers Marcus Mackenzie’s statement, leading him to suspect that he’s being compelled to feed by the Web. Shortly thereafter, Basira finds the tape Martin made in “Scrutiny” and confronts Jon about his feeding. (”Threshold”).
July 20, 2018: The gang go to 105 Hill Top Road, finding a written statement from Annabelle Cane along with Jon’s first tape as Head Archivist. Annebelle tells Jon to stay away from Hill Top Road in the future, and the line gets Spooky Static. (”Weaver”)

A/N: yeah, I’m still around, surprise. Lol. I know I said part 11 would be the end of this series, however, when writing book two, I realized, completely the last 7 parts worked far better in this book. So alas, here is part 12! The story is getting darker, and the drama is building up to a shocking twist. Be prepared.
Mob boss Steve Rogers x Reader x Monster Bucky Barnes
Warnings: it’s a mob fic, so...
Series Masterlist// Thee Masterlist
The wind howled fiercely as it tore relentlessly through the the foliage. You watched through a rain distorted window, as the roaring sound of thunder crashed overhead. Yough sighed heavily, turning your back to the large bay window, sinking slowly into the depth of the paisley patterned armchair. You gazed down at your little, swollen belly, your hand circling it in conform. It had been days since you’d heard from Steve. He hadn’t phoned, even when promised you he would. And you couldn’t help but fear the worst…
It was just over 3 months ago that you and Steve had been married, and what a magical night that was, what a magical time it had been- Steve and you had grown closer than you ever thought possible over the last couple of months, up until 4 weeks ago, when Bucky went missing.
Steve passed the length of his study, glasses sitting on low on his nose, face contorted with thought. His hand ran through his disheveled hair in frustration. You softly knocked at the partially open door, watching has his head rose to meet yours. “Might I come in?”
you asked in a hushed tone. He said nothing, only nodded and with a swift gesture of his had he beckoned you into the room. You wasted no time welcoming yourself into the room, waltzing your way towards him as your arms found their way around his waist. Your hands folded over his the center of his chest, the flesh of your cheek resting against the jaggedness of his shoulder blade. His hands fell over yours, the heat of his palm brought a comfort to you, his thumb running the length fingers.
The air lie thick with silence, neither of you speaking for what seemed like an eternity.
You had no idea what troubled him so, you just knew it couldn’t be good. Something in your gut told you it was related to Bucky. And by Steve’s demeanor and erratic behavior you knew it couldn’t have been good.
For a while, Bucky had been doing some “undercover” work for Steve. His opposition was to gather intel on rival gangs- after the fiasco that had landed you in the hospital with a lovely broken bone. They were inherent on finding those responsible, amongst other things. Bucky had gotten in deep, after falling out with Steve, he had become more involved with Steve’s rivals, they began to trust him, thus giving him more information that he could relay onto Steve, until he decided to make an appearance at the wedding…
“Steve?” You kept your voice low, smooth and sweetg, no more than a hum in his ear as you spoke. You moved around him, your face mere inches from his now, as you cupped his face in your hands, your thumbs grazing over is scruffy cheeks. You brought your lips to his, in a soft kiss-expressing the words you couldn’t seem to say. He kissed you back, but it was hesitant at first, as if his mind was elsewhere, as you knew it was- before it became urgent, hungry. His hands crept into your free fallin hair, as he pulled you deeper into the kiss. You kissed him back, savorying every lic k of his tongue, every caress of his hand.
In these trying weeks, Steve had been distant, he rarely slept, or ate, or paid you much attention, and in your sensitive state, you savoured his attention. You wanted nothing more than to be in his presence, you craved it. But a feeling was telling you to give him the space he needed.
“I’m going to brew some coffee, care for a cup?
Steve’s eyes met yours, the endless pools of blue glistened with vulnerability and aching. Your thumb traced over his cheekbone, following the line of his jaw in a gentle caress, before hovering over his soft lips.
God he was beautiful. Dangerously beautiful, and seeing him this way made your heart sink.
Steve brushed straggling strands of hair from your face, tucking them neatly behind your ear as he cupped your cheek in his hand. You leaned into him, relishing his touch.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Steve lightly kissed your forehead, running his hand over the length of your shoulder, falling to your hand, which his gave a faint squeeze.
“Coffee sounds great. I’ll be out in a moment.”
With a quaint smile, you nodded, giving his hand a kiss before making your way out of the study.
The rich smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the large kitchen. You clutched your mug tightly, your hip resting against the counter as you gazed out of the misty, rain covered window.
The sound of banging at the front doors echoed throughout the house, drawing you back to reality from distant thoughts. Peering out into the foyer, Marcus was nowhere insight. He must be on the other side of the manor, and given your curious nature, you decided to open the door and investigate.
Heaving open the heavy door, a cool mist whipped against your nose. The petrichor smell of the falling rain sent shivers of up your spine. You loved the comforting smell.
Locking out though sheets of rain, leaving ripples in the puddles that collected along the walkway, was barren. You leaned out of the threshold, holding tight as you starched on your tippy toes still nothing. No one is sight. Stepping back in, you stumbled a bit. You looked around, making sure there was nobody around to catch a glimpse of your clumsiness.
Out of the corner of your eye, you spotted a large blue box in your peripheral. You walked out onto the front porch, droplets of rain just grazing your shoulder, as you reached down to pick up the box.
It looked like a flower box, a tad bit heavier than flowers, but it smelled of flowers, sort of, but an overpowering sour stench leached from its edges. You held out the box, stretching your arms as far from you s you could, your stomach becoming unsettled as the awful smell wafted into your nose. You rushed into the kitchen, nearly throwing the box into the table with a loud thud.
“What’s that?”
Steve’s voice startled you, causing your heart to jump in your chest. You hadn’t seen him standing in the kitchen, propped against the counter stirring cream into his coffee.
“I think pregnancy has made you more jumpy. Never thought that was possible...” Steve chuckled lightly, utter music to your ears. It’d been far too long since you’d heard that magical sound. “So what’s with the box?”
Steve asked, pushing himself from his propped position against the counter.
“I’m not sure. I just found it on the front porch. Looks like flowers or something.”
Steve’s brow furrowed as he took a sip of his coffee.
“I wasn’t expecting anything, but might as well open it.”
With the go ahead from Steve you couldn’t deny the slight of excitement to figure out what was in the box, despite the smell.
Nothing could have prepared you for the trepidation that wait beneath the cover.
A blood curdling scream slipped from your lips as you stared in horror. Severed arm with detached fingers had been put on display, draped over a dozen white roses caked in dry crusted blood. Maggots adorned the decomposing flesh, the reaked to high heavens.
Your hands clasped over your mouth as a stream of tears flowed freely from your eyes. You weren’t sure if it was shock, the sight of a severed arm or a combination of the two, but you couldn’t stop the sickening creeping up from your stomach. -at this stage in your pregnancy, you know there was no point in fighting it. Holding back would only bring suffering in the end….
Steve’s hands rubbed at your back, soothing you the best he could. You looked up at him, eyes red and puffy from tears. Without hesitation, his strong hands clutched at your shoulders, pulling you back from the traumatizing site.
“Marcus!” Steve shouted, his booming tone echoing of the walls of the large house.
He pulled you into him, holding your head against his broad chest, comforting-even though his body was stiff and shaky- you as he brushed at your hair sweetly.
The patter of Marcus footsteps grew louder as he grew closer. You could tell by the sound of is encroaching steps that he was sprinting, his footfalls were short and sporadic, very unusual for Marcus.
“You called sir?”
“Take her to our room please, and watch her.”
You head jerked up, eyes searching Steve’s. His icy blue eyes were dark and brooding. His jawline was rigid, teeth clenched.
“Steve-“
“Please, just go with Marcus, I don’t have time to argue right now.”
“Just tell me what’s going on, what is this?” You wanted answers, needed answers. There was a severed arm in a box on your kitchen table, surely Steve didn’t expect you to go on your merry way, no questions asked?
“Now is not the time y/n. Please, just do as you are told!”
Steve snapped. His voice was low and angered as he turned his head away from you.
“Come now Mrs.Rogers.” Marcus voice was soft, as he gently placed his hands on your shoulders, coxing you towards the hall. Reluctantly, you allowed Marcus to lead you away, glancing back over your shoulder at Steve, you could see sadness in his eyes, as his posture slouched, palms resting on the wooden table top.
“God dammit Bucky...”
You strained your ears to hear him, his voice was but a whisper as he spoke.
Your breath caught in your throat as everything became clear. That arm... that arm in the box, it belonged to Bucky...

for the TV Show Ask Game: 3, 50, 51
also including questions from @sickrey3, @kshaar, and @katherinebarlow thank you!
2. if you could have saved one TV show from cancellation, which one would it be? my so-called life, like, a million times. it was the only prime-time drama that spoke to my existence at the time and losing it so soon affected my choice of media for years afterward. i’m still so bitter.
3. have you ever quit a show before it finished? why? i quit things like it's my job. fuck them if they're not entertaining me anymore. shits not worth it. the big one, which took me years, was elementary. i watched fewer eps per season until i realized i didn't wanna come back anymore. they just don't care about joan and marcus as much as i wish they did. (edit: i wrote this answer weeks ago just before leaving on vacation and now i have to admit i did watch the final three eps. they were okay. it was a good place to leave them.)
11. which TV show has the best musical soundtrack, in your opinion? this is limited to shows that i paid enough attention to that i got to know the soundtrack--very small sample size ftr--but skins had some great music. also steven universe is wooonderful.
16. do you feel like there are any underrated TV show formats? not really underrated at all but i am a sucker for shows set in quirky small towns or insular communities where there's a constant undercurrent of shenanigans, like letterkenny, northern exposure, picket fences, schitt's creek, and community
24. how do you feel about bottle episodes? amazing, fantastic, groundbreaking. giving the plot a break often leads to the most interesting character development
26. favourite TV show theme song? tie: black sails and orange is the new black
28. who would be your dream cameo on your favourite show? ooh, basically every lgbtq actor on doom patrol. a short, non inclusive list: laverne cox, candis cayne, briana hildebrand, eddie izzard, angelica ross, fiona shaw, russell tovey, victor garber, wentworth miller, billy porter, sean maher, patricia velasquez, holland taylor, sarah paulson, shannon purser, jamie clayton, jen richards, saffron burrows, maria bello, and definitely neil patrick harris, nathan lane, billy eichner, etc.
35. who are your top 5 TV characters right now? rita farr (doom patrol), dean fogg (the magicians), clive babineaux (izombie), john silver (black sails), david rose (schitt's creek)
50. what’s one TV cliche you love? groundhog day episodes!!!! i die when the trapped character finally gives in to despair, like, just totally breaks, and suddenly dawn breaks and they get this tiny reason to hope that things will be okay
51. what’s one TV cliche you despise? pointless het drama. leverage is the only show i can think of that kept their couples apart for reasons explicitly tied to the woman's character development rather than "oh it's the second tuesday of the month so we're having a massive blowout then breaking up until right before the winter finale! in three breakups, we'll make up by getting engaged and we'll only split a couple more times after that! true love!"

It has become commonplace to lament that we don’t have a common culture any more—a repertoire of art that we can all enjoy regardless of our political loyalties. Well, maybe it’s because we have a lot of people trying to mark off parts of the culture as their tribal territory, off-limits to partisan enemies.
I thought of this when someone sent me a link to a recent podcast for science-fiction fans, in which political commenter Ana Marie Cox puzzles over the fact that Ted Cruz is a big Star Trek fan. (To save you some trouble, it’s about 28 minutes in.) Why is this such a mystery? “The original Star Trek universe, for its time even, was pretty social justice warrior-y.”
Try not to spit out your coffee. To paraphrase Dr. Carol Marcus, Jim Kirk was many things, but he was never a social justice warrior.
…
Primarily, though, I see this as a giant demonstration of Jonathan Haidt’s point about how people on the Left generally make no effort to understand those of us on the Right. Haidt and two other psychologists, Jesse Graham and Brian Nosek, conducted a famous experiment in which they asked conservatives to answer a questionnaire as if they were liberals and asked liberals to answer as if they were conservatives.
The result is not a mystery to anyone on the Right. We understand the Left’s perspective pretty well, because how could we avoid it? It has been broadcast to us every day for most of our lives, in school, in the movies, on social media, and so on. But liberals trying to answer as conservatives consistently got it wrong. Unwilling to consider why anyone would honestly oppose the welfare state, for example, they assume that people on the Right just hate the poor. Trapped in their own cultural bubble, people on the Left regard their politics as the blandly normal, default view of all decent people, while turning any opposing view into a cartoon caricature of evil.

New story in Politics from Time: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Privately Advised Pete Buttigieg on Campaign Hires
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has privately recommended several potential hires to Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, a rare example of direct political involvement from one of tech’s most powerful executives.
Earlier this year, Zuckerberg sent multiple emails to Mike Schmuhl, Buttigieg’s campaign manager, with names of individuals that he might consider hiring, campaign spokesman Chris Meagher confirmed. Priscilla Chan, Zuckerberg’s wife, also sent multiple emails to Schmuhl with staff recommendations. Ultimately, two of the people recommended were hired.
The emails between Zuckerberg and Buttigieg have come to light as Zuckerberg faces unrelenting attacks from politicians from both parties over such issues as misinformation, privacy, election meddling and bias. Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the House Financial Services Committee on Facebook’s impact on the financial services and housing sectors.
Zuckerberg used to make political contributions more frequently, including to former and current House speakers Paul Ryan and Nancy Pelosi in 2014, but he hasn’t made any political donations or endorsements to specific candidates in the 2020 election cycle. In June, he gave $5,000 to Facebook’s PAC, which contributes to both Democratic and Republican candidates.
‘Top-Tier Organization’
“Since the beginning of the campaign, we’ve built a top-tier operation with more than 430 staff in South Bend and around the country,” Meagher said. “The staffers come from all types of background, and everyone is working hard every day to elect Pete to the White House.”
A spokesman for the Zuckerberg-Chan family told Bloomberg News that the employees asked the tech mogul and Chan to recommend them.
“Having seen Mark’s visit to South Bend in 2017 and Facebook Live with Mayor Buttigieg, colleagues later asked Mark and Priscilla to connect them with the Buttigieg campaign as they were interested in joining,” spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement. Zuckerberg visited South Bend, Indiana, in April 2017 as part of his philanthropic work and got a tour from Buttigieg, that Zuckerberg live-streamed.
“Mark and Priscilla have not decided who to support for President,” he added.
LaBolt didn’t answer a follow-up question asking whether Zuckerberg has made similar connections for other candidates.
Making Introductions
In the emails, Zuckerberg and Chan recommended numerous potential campaign hires, and two of them are now on staff: Eric Mayefsky, senior digital analytics adviser, and Nina Wornhoff, organizing data manager.
Mayefsky previously worked as the director of data science at Quora, a 10-year-old question-and-answer startup founded by former Facebook employees. Mayefsky worked at Facebook for almost four years starting in 2010, according to his LinkedIn profile. Wornhoff previously worked as a machine learning engineer at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and in Democratic politics in Indiana, Buttigieg’s home state.
The communication was initiated by Zuckerberg and Chan, Meagher said. It was sent shortly after Buttigieg officially launched his campaign in mid-April.
“From the CNN Town hall in March to our launch a month later, we literally got 7,000 resumes,” Meagher said. “I think that he (Zuckerberg) thought Eric would be a good staff hire with a lot of experience and same with Nina and Priscilla.”
Crimson Connection
Zuckerberg, 35, and Buttigieg, 37, overlapped at Harvard, and Buttigieg was friends with two of Zuckerberg’s roommates. He was also one of Facebook’s first 300 users. But they were only introduced years later by a mutual Harvard friend.
The staff recommendations from Zuckerberg are the first evidence of the Facebook CEO actively assisting a presidential campaign. A number of other high-ranking Facebook executives, including David Marcus, the executive leading Facebook’s cryptocurrency efforts, Naomi Gleit, one of Facebook’s longest-tenured executives, and Chris Cox, former chief product officer who is close friends with Zuckerberg, have donated to Buttigieg.
In recent weeks, Democrats have escalated their criticism of Facebook for its refusal to moderate political ads. Elizabeth Warren, in particular, has repeatedly attacked Zuckerberg and Facebook over its decision not to fact check posts or ads shared by politicians. Joe Biden wrote the company on Thursday demanding that an ad paid for by a pro-Donald Trump super-PAC be pulled down for what he said were lies about his Ukrainian-related work as vice president.
Silicon Valley
Buttigieg, meanwhile, has become somewhat of a darling of Silicon Valley Democrats, repeatedly returning to San Francisco for high-dollar fundraisers.
He’s been more apprehensive about breaking up big tech companies than some of his Democratic counterparts, saying the issue of monopolies extends beyond tech. But he’s also raised concerns about tech companies having too much power and has floated regulation, including fines and the blocking of new mergers, for Facebook and other big tech companies.
Republicans have accused Zuckerberg and Facebook of bias against conservative viewpoints, claiming that Facebook and other social media platforms unfairly suppress their views. Zuckerberg reportedly started to hold private meetings last summer with conservative leaders to hear their concerns.
In the past, Facebook embedded staffers with political campaigns to give them guidance on how to best use the social media platform. The 2016 Trump campaign said it greatly benefited from having Facebook staffers on hand. The company announced in 2018 that it would pull back from offering on-site support.
Now Zuckerberg needs friends in Washington, where Facebook is under unprecedented attack. His company is being investigated for possible antitrust violations by two federal agencies and Congress. It’s also trying to get skeptical regulators and lawmakers on board with its goal of launching a cryptocurrency.
But this presidential cycle, Facebook has become one of Democrats’ top punching bags. In recent weeks, Warren’s campaign has bought ads on Facebook claiming Zuckerberg endorsed Trump, a deliberate falsehood that she used to draw attention to Facebook’s policies exempting politicians from fact-checking ads, and corrected later in the advertisement.

All 32 NFL defensive lines, ranked
Which teams have the best defensive fronts in the NFL? Which ones have the worst? We have the answer!
The NFL is littered with stud talent along the defensive line. Just about every team has at least one guy that can reliably make plays in the backfield.
Still, a collection of dominant talent on the defensive line is a huge plus. It makes life easier on defensives secondaries and makes life hell for opposing offenses. There are four tiers of defensive line talent: total game-wreckers, talented albeit inconsistent, groups that are a piece away, and defensive lines that need a complete retooling in the offseason.
Game-wreckers
Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles
The Rams don’t have a better collection of talent than the Saints or the Bears or the Eagles, but damn, they have Aaron Donald and that matters a ton. Donald is leading the league with 16.5 sacks as a defensive tackle and can break a game wide open for the Rams.
Remember his game against the Chiefs? The Lions? The Packers? The first game against the 49ers? His performance against the Vikings? Over and over again Donald has shown that he can be the singular reason why the Rams’ defense stays afloat with shaky secondary play. Oh yeah, they have guys like Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers plus the midseason trade for a solid cleanup guy like Dante Fowler.
The Bears have a dominant group up front as well. Khalil Mack leads them with his 10 sacks and six forced fumbles, but they have studs all over the place on their defensive line. Akiem Hicks has six sacks from the interior. Bilal Nichols is showing out as a rookie, and Eddie Goldman has finally been able to put together a healthy season. Leonard Floyd has been a bit of a disappointment since being a top-10 pick in the 2016 draft, but if he’s the worst player on your defensive line, you’re in great shape.
Chicago has multiple defensive linemen with at least two forced fumbles. Mack has six while Nichols and Hicks each have two a piece. They may “only” rank 10th in sack percentage as a unit, but they know how to make plays.
New Orleans finds itself on here after a few solid draft choices. Cameron Jordan is an elite defensive end. Sheldon Rankins has developed into one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in the league in his third season. Other players, like David Onyemata and Marcus Davenport, have been solid for the Saints as well.
The Eagles, led by Fletcher Cox, have been able to wreak havoc in opposing backfields. Their sack percentage might not be through the roof (23rd), but they get a ton of penetration in the backfield against the run and the pass. Michael Bennett, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham have combined for 27 tackles for loss this season.
Inconsistent, but when they’re hot you better watch out
Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington, Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars
Baltimore has constructed their defensive line in a fascinating way. They have a bruising, rugged group filled with heavy hitters like Michael Pierce, Brandon Williams, Terrell Suggs, Zadarius Smith, and Matthew Judon, but they actually get a decent amount of sacks for such a physical play style — Baltimore currently ranks ninth in the league in sack percentage. They beat you up, wear you down, and make plays in the backfield.
The Texans have one of the better defensive lines in the game as well. J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney can dominate in stretches, while Whitney Mercilus and Christian Covington are solid role players. Watt and Clowney have 27 tackles for loss between the two of them, but the rest of their defensive linemen need to step up a bit. The Texans have four other players with at least four tackles for loss, but only one of them spends time on the defensive line — that would be Whitney Mercilus, who is joined by Kareem Jackson (5), Bernardrick McKinney (4), and Tyrann Mathieu (4).
Dallas and Minnesota have similar groups. They each have one great talent (Demarcus Lawrence for Dallas and Danielle Hunter for Minnesota) and guys that can come through in stretches to provide support. The Chargers are in the same boat, but definitely have the potential to move into the top tier with more consistent play from Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa.
A piece away from really making noise
Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs
Each of these teams have a player or two that can really make life difficult for opposing offensive lines. Whether it’s Myles Garrett in Cleveland, Kawann Short in Carolina, Damon Harrison and Da’Shawn Hand in Carolina, or Jason Pierre Paul in Tampa Bay — these guys can make you pay.
The problem is consistency around them. Carolina and Detroit need help on the edge, Cleveland could use an interior ass-kicker to pair with Larry Ogunjobi, and Buffalo needs a guy to eventually replace Kyle Williams — even though they do lead the league, by far, in percentage of run plays ending in zero or fewer yards.
These teams are close to having great defensive lines, but they aren’t quite there yet. That could change with a bonafide free agent or a top flight draft pick, but as of now, they aren’t truly scaring teams.
Need to pour resources into fixing this thing
Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, New York Jets
There are plenty of teams that need put resources into their defensive line this offseason. The Atlanta Falcons (Grady Jarrett), San Francisco 49ers (DeForest Buckner), and Oakland Raiders (Maurice Hurst) all have young players budding into legitimate stars, but the rest of their defensive line is in poor shape.
The Falcons specifically have to be upset with their current defensive line situation. Vic Beasley registered 15.5 sacks in 2016, but he has just nine sacks in 27 games over the past two seasons. He’s gone from a player that could get sacks in bunches to someone who offers very little on a down to down basis. With a cap hit of $12.8 million in 2019, his time with the Falcons could be coming to an end anyway.
The Bengals are in a precarious situation. They have a potential future Hall of Famer in Geno Atkins, but still haven’t produced much on the defensive line. Defensive end Carl Lawson suffering a torn ACL halfway through the season hurt, but he only had one sack and six tackles in eight games. Carlos Dunlap has been a solid running mate with Atkins again (the duo have 15 of the Bengals’ 28 sacks on the season), but they need someone else to step up and make a play for them.

(Bloomberg) -- Facebook Inc. chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg has privately recommended several potential hires to Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, a rare example of direct political involvement from one of tech’s most powerful executives.Earlier this year, Zuckerberg sent multiple emails to Mike Schmuhl, Buttigieg’s campaign manager, with names of individuals that he might consider hiring, campaign spokesman Chris Meagher confirmed. Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the House Financial Services Committee on Facebook’s impact on the financial services and housing sectors.Zuckerberg used to make political contributions more frequently, including to former and current House speakers Paul Ryan and Nancy Pelosi in 2014, but he hasn’t made any political donations or endorsements to specific candidates in the 2020 election cycle. In June, he gave $5,000 to Facebook’s PAC, which contributes to both Democratic and Republican candidates.‘Top-Tier Organization’“Since the beginning of the campaign, we’ve built a top-tier operation with more than 430 staff in South Bend and around the country,” Meagher said. “The staffers come from all types of background, and everyone is working hard every day to elect Pete to the White House.”A spokesman for the Zuckerberg-Chan family told Bloomberg News that the employees asked the tech mogul and Chan to recommend them.“Having seen Mark’s visit to South Bend in 2017 and Facebook Live with Mayor Buttigieg, colleagues later asked Mark and Priscilla to connect them with the Buttigieg campaign as they were interested in joining,” spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement. Zuckerberg visited South Bend, Indiana, in April 2017 as part of his philanthropic work and got a tour from Buttigieg, that Zuckerberg live-streamed.LaBolt didn’t answer a follow-up question asking whether Zuckerberg has made similar connections for other candidates.Zuckerberg, asked about the emails on a call with reporters Monday, acknowledged that he and his wife passed along hiring recommendations but said that those actions should not be seen as an endorsement.“I think this should probably not be misconstrued as if I’m like deeply involved in trying to support their campaign or something like that,” he said.Making IntroductionsIn the emails, Zuckerberg and Chan recommended potential campaign hires, and two of them are now on staff: Eric Mayefsky, senior digital analytics adviser, and Nina Wornhoff, organizing data manager.Mayefsky previously worked as the director of data science at Quora, a 10-year-old question-and-answer startup founded by former Facebook employees.
