Feliz Cumpleaños a cielo a nuestro eterno amado capitán, Marcelo Pérez del Castillo 💛

There are few words to describe how beloved Marcelo Pérez del Castillo was as a son, brother, friend and captain, as well as a surrogate father figure to his two younger sisters, Stella and Claudia, after the tragic early death of his father in 1968. Marcelo is described as charming, cheeky, loving, and energetic, with a magnetic and mischievous personality and a deep love for the sport of rugby. Whether he was running the Old Christian's Rugby Club (of which he was a co-founder along with his best friend, Eduardo Strauch), working in his architecture studio with Eduardo, riding his motorcycle along the streets of Montevideo or procrastinating on his homework, the testimonies of those who loved him make clear how much he lit up the world during his short life.

His deeply caring personality continued to shine through even in the worst of circumstances. Survivor Javier Methol wrote of Marcelo: "What those young boys needed was strong direction stemming from love, in a setting of orderliness and camaraderie. And what was Marcelo? He was all of that."

From taking immediate action in the moments after the crash, organizing the rescue of survivors trapped under crushed airplane seats and building the luggage wall that kept the survivors from freezing to death the first night, to volunteering to hand out the rations of dried human flesh after it became clear that rescue wasn't coming, Marcelo lived and breathed his values of honor, integrity, courage and kindness until the very end.

Today, the 26th of March 2025, would have been his 78th birthday. Today, I hope you take a moment to remember a brave, kind and beloved boy, who fought until his very last breath, and reach out to those around you with the same warmth and care Marcelo showed every day of his too-short life.
Happy heavenly birthday, Marcelo. I hope you're up there having the biggest party and dancing your heart out with your friends and family 💛

wada sez: For the fourth anniversary of the Transformers: Mosaic project, a very special strip was posted: with a creative team consisting entirely of creatives who did official work for IDW Publishing. Each of the seven characters appearing in the strip was illustrated by a different artist/colorist pair; the credits were given alphabetically, but in the comments, Ed Pirrie gave a list matching the characters to the artists—apparently taken from somewhere on Facebook? Anyway, some of the assignments here hold particular significance. Guido Guidi was a fill-in artist on Last Stand of the Wreckers, which featured Springer, and he’d also drawn the character in All Hail Megatron. Joana Lafuente colored the Perceptor-starring story “Lost & Found”. Milne and Perez illustrated the much-maligned Spotlight: Arcee. Josh Burcham colored Last Stand of the Wreckers, featuring Kup. And finally, Robby Musso's first IDW work was Spotlight: Ultra Magnus. In terms of the writing, most of the interest is in Hot Rod’s thoughts; he’s the only one who refers to Prime as “Optimus”, foreshadowing his own later rise to the rank of Prime. Furthermore, his assertion that he’ll “make this right” is an oblique acknowledgement of a very common interpretation of Prime’s death—that Hot Rod himself was responsible, having interfered with his fight with Megatron. The next strip after this one was also themed after The Transformers: The Movie, so check back tomorrow for that!

The craziest chain of events led to a giggle fit in a crowded train, and I'm just glad nobody called the ambulance to have me admitted to a mental hospital:
I'm reading RW&RB on the train (as I have been doing for the past week). There's a man that makes me feel unsafe, so I quickly change compartments at one of the stops).
An American (I think) and someone with a noticeable Spanish accent (I'm not sure where he was from though, the few words he said in Spanish didn't contain any of the telltale sounds) get on the train behind me. They apparently don't know the train system very well, so they keep on walking behind me until I sit down in 2nd class, and sit behind me. They keep on talking (the man who spoke with a Spanish accent the most).
I keep on reading.
I get to this sentence:

5. Between the guy with the heavy-ish sentence basically in my ear and this sentence, my traitor brain reads this in Marcelo Hernández's voice (minute 0:40):
youtube
6. I start giggling, try to keep it down, I sound like I'm sniffing, a few people turn around to see if I'm crying, I start giggling even more.
7. I have to stop reading, but then I can concentrate on the passionate speech about the economy and international relations behind me. This sends me into even more hysteric laughter (again, under my breath).
8. I decide to listen to music, and the first song that pops up is Alexander Hamilton, and that leads me to My Shot. As I'm hearing "I am the A-L E-X A-N D E-R we are [...]", my brain provides me with the image of Taylor Zakhar Perez singing this, and at this point, I lost it.
Honestly, in Spain it would've been fine, because I was pretty successful in not breathing through the giggles, but in Belgium it's like... Joy? Laughter? In this society?

Society of the Snow is incredible in so many ways. But one of the biggest is the incredible, tender thoughtfulness put into casting the boys.
In Pablo Vierci's book, he wrote in the forward that before filming, Enzo met Numa's family and walked through their home. One of his sisters said, "when they went into the backyard, she felt for a moment as if her brother had come back." Also, when the survivors met the cast, they were stunned by how similar Diego and Alfonsina looked to Marcelo and Suzy. One of the survivors said that when Alfonsina stood up to speak to the group, his mind just couldn't comprehend it because Suzy Parrado was dead, but there she was in front of them.
The video I was waiting for.

So I’m listening to the “Society of the Snow” audiobook at work this weekend. If you’ve read “Alive,” I recommend reading this as well. There is a lot of information and personal accounts not in the first book that are in this one, particularly because they’re given from the survivors after a longer stretch of time, after their return to Uruguay, after they’ve had three decades to contemplate what it meant for them and for others.
A couple of points:
I never thought about it, but the gun the pilot requested right after the crash never went away. It was always there. They had it, and the bullets, through all of that, and never used it.
Parrado and Canessa always get so much focus in retellings of the story that it’s wonderful to get first-person accounts from the others.
Still, Parrado getting out of his coma, losing his sister, and then being like, “Welp, fuck this, I’m OUT,” to the point where it’s surprising the others didn’t have to tackle him to stop him is still the kind of atttude I would hope to have in a similar situation.
“Alive” is very linear in its account of the story, but “Society of the Snow” kind of moves around. If you’ve read neither, I’d probably say read “Alive” first, then “Society of the Snow.” I mean, read both, they’re both great, but they’re also very different but equally thorough ways of telling the same story.
The making of the movie takes up a couple of chapters at the beginning, and it’s mentioned the survivors met with the actors who play them. The survivors were shocked at just how much the actor playing Marcelo Perez looked like him, so I went and looked him up and he really, really does. (It says a lot that I did not need to look up what Marcelo Perez looked like.)

Resenha Ainda Estou Aqui

"The Andes are huge. They'd have to organize the search in some way - like in zones. They were here yesterday. We saw them fly overhead. Today we heard them but didn't see them. I bet they're searching a different area." "That means they didn't see us." - La Sociedad de la Nieve/Society of the Snow (2023)

My biggest takeaway so far from reading Society of the Snow:
Marcelo Pérez was incredibly brave, compassionate, and caring. He was a beacon of hope for the boys on the mountain, and the love he showed them endures to this day. But also, Marcelo was just a KID! He was 25! 25 is a baby in the grand scheme of things! This sweet, brave, incredible boy cried for his Mamá at night and feared he'd lost his humanity when they had to start eating the bodies of their friends. He sought comfort from his closest friends in his darkest moment, but wanted no reassurance. Just their company.
I WILL NEVER BE OKAY AFTER FINISHING THIS BOOK.

Idiots: Cristiano shouldn’t have left RM! He left for ego and look what happened!
Me: The Las Vegas accusation was creeping up in 2017-2018 and literally exploded in September 2018. If you think Perez who didn’t back him for something as simple as tax evasion, and was eyeing Neymar, would have backed Ronaldo for a SA allegation, you’re an idiot. He’d have his contract broken up and 1984ed CR7 out of RM history. Besides Marcelo not one of the people who played with him, or Perez, and known him for years went out and stood by him. Playing friendly years later is a cop out.
How people wilfully ignore context is how we have morons mocking Sancho for losing a UCL final over Ten Hag who got United dead last of the group. “Muh FA Cup” you’re idiots with limited attention span and limited critical thinking skills.
Lots of people, even Ronaldo fans, are leaving vicariously through stars or clubs. Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Them crying about “legacy” and “records” is funny: dude keeps telling you records follow him and not the other (he would have signed city like Henry signed for Barca but shhhh Henry is a “legend” 😂) but they think getting a ucl while being benched half the season, or whole season like Bale or Haazard, to check a box is what Cristiano Ronaldo is about. Ronaldo keeps telling you the moment he quit, we will never hear from him again, and people think he’s joking.
I am not pretending to know what Ronaldo is thinking, but every decisions he took made sense to me and I respected him and Neymar a hell more for leaving their comfort zone and try and compete with other clubs than cowards who won’t leave successful clubs because they know they’ll lose withouT it.
