DID YOU KNOW?
Ancient Roman statues weren't white as we see them today but were actually colorful.
Roman artists used a wide range of pigments, painting media, and surface applications to embellish their marble sculptures.
In the 19th century, archaeologists unearthed better-preserved items that had traces of color.
But these were mostly ignored — and often actively scrubbed off — until as late as the 1960s.
It was only then that scholars began to confirm that the white sculptures we all associated with Ancient Greece and Rome were actually painted with multiple colors — a practice known as polychromy.
The paint had deteriorated and faded over time, but evidence of it remained.

With all these sculptures of angels ,cupids and gargoyles carved through the centuries ,you would think they were real creatures as you and me. But all we have is art forms that are allegories of our psyche, fictions and symbols of our own past. Have you ever seen an angel coming down naked with wings male or female you pick one,or a Cupid for that matter?A three foot child with wings ready to hit you with an arrow, an invisible one, have you?Or even a live gargoyle perched atop a bridge, have you? Well, thanks for your telepathic reply. Each world culture has many strange and often creepy creatures that deserve a second look .Be them from western or eastern origins.Unless you are one of those lucky ones,if not unlucky ones to crossed path with a cryptid, denizen of the night and you are a paranormal investigator.Well, I have my views on these creatures and know a thing or two regarding them. Our lifespan is so short that I’m not going to deny their existence in the past ,but in my time the archetypes have changed and new ones have appeared, for example today’s angels have no wings ,many have become shapeshifters and the prevalence of grey aliens and UFOs has gained some ground ,as well as Bigfoot, the Yeti, and other more familiar like dogmen ,mothman, wolf men, sirens or mermaids .Well, I believe we will continue to believe in them ,don’t you? cemetery of laeken, brussels.
the story of a marble worker evrard flignot who devastated by the death of his wife built a mausoleum for her. at first look inside, there is a mourner reaching out to an empty wall. but, once a year, on the day of the summer solstice, the sun draws a light that recalls this love for almost a century.

"Why no one sculpts the way of the old masters anymore?"
"Because, my friend, nowadays there's better artists around, but you were too conservative and whiny to just look around and see. You, my friend, don't want to support art and artists, you just want to whine and say that today we're all degenerates. Search and support what you like, instead of crying for the clout".
Back to Fabio Viale works, I'm so glad that I discovered his art today! His sculptures are incredible, and even more incredible is that I never heard of him until today.
Obsessed by this statue I saw today in Le Havre (France) from the Italian sculptor Fabio Viale. The design isn't painted on... The ink is injected inside the marble like a real tattoo. And if I remember correctly what the guide said, it took the artist three weeks to do just that.

In spite of the damage, it is so beautiful. Thankful to all photographers who take pictures of history as it happens.
The top one is a bust of Napoleon. The bottom one is a sculpture of his sister, Elisa.
The second from the top is of the Three Graces, made for the Napoleon’s wife, Josephine.
The middle one is the Reclining Naiad as commissioned by John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley. It was based on the sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix.
The second from the bottom is the Penitent Magdalene. Eugène de Beauharnais liked it so much that he commissioned a replica for himself. That version is now at the Hermitage Museum.

Works from the plaster gallery at the Antonio Canova Museum. In 1917, the museum was bombed and the artworks damaged. Here we see them catalogued soon after (photos by Stefano Serafin, 1918).
