Marath, Instinto da Natureza/ Marath, Will of the Wild
Tumblr media

Enchanting, awe-inspiring, and utterly breathtaking, the annual animal migration at Maasai Mara is a spectacle that truly defies description. Every year, over a million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes make a perilous journey across the Mara River, providing onlookers with a unique opportunity to witness one of nature's most extraordinary displays of survival and endurance. This remarkable event, known as the Great Migration, is a testament to the incredible variety and richness of life in the African savannah.
Exploring the Breathtaking Annual Animal Migration at Maasai MaraThe Maasai Mara, a large game reserve in southwestern Kenya, is home to an astounding array of wildlife species, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, and giraffes. However, it is most renowned for hosting one of the world's most impressive natural events: the annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara. This epic journey, which spans approximately 1,800 miles, takes place between July and October, with the exact timing varying each year depending on the rains. The spectacle of these countless animals thundering across the plains and braving the crocodile-infested waters of the Mara River is a sight that has captivated and enthralled visitors from around the globe. Visit https://nisafari.com for travel guides, videos and top destinations all over the world.
Unforgettable Spectacle: The Great Migration at Maasai MaraThe Great Migration is not merely an event, but an intense, visceral experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it. The sight of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras stampeding across the savannah, their hooves kicking up clouds of dust that obscure the horizon, is as terrifying as it is awe-inspiring.
The perilous crossing of the Mara River, fraught with danger from swift currents and lurking crocodiles, is a dramatic testament to the relentless drive for survival that characterizes life in the wild. The air is filled with the sounds of grunting wildebeest, the splashing of water, and the snapping of crocodile jaws, creating a symphony of noise that is as unforgettable as the spectacle itself. The annual animal migration at Maasai Mara is a spectacle unlike any other on Earth.
It is a powerful reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of the natural world and the ceaseless struggle for survival that defines life in the African savannah. Whether you are an avid wildlife enthusiast or simply a lover of extraordinary natural phenomena, witnessing the Great Migration at Maasai Mara is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Marath, Will of the Wild. It will never not be funny to machine gun everyone at the table with an elk I purposefully killed 5 times.
Titania, Protector of Argoth is a close second, but I took both of these decks apart because they were too consistent and cruel.
So there are more tumblr mtg players than I anticipated, it turns out. What's everyone's favourite commander?
I'll go first, Juri of the Revue.
(Honourable mention to my meme deck where you have to get a date for Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile by swiping left or right with his scry ability.)

Marath, Will of the Wild alter
I’m relatively happy with the piece as a whole, although the magic flame and face didn’t turn out very well. Despite that, my brother was super excited and immediately swapped out his regular Marath.

In terms of mechanics and colors, Gahiji tracks pretty cleanly with the godbeasts of Naya. I always thought the people looked like Nayan godseekers or godworshippers, too.
He's a 4/4 that has a go-wide strategy, neither of which track with Naya's 5 power stompy mechanics. There's really no similarities other than being a beast in Naya colors. Marath and Gahiji are the only Naya-colored beasts that aren't explicitly from Naya, and I actually prefer that.
I think people want him to fit for the same reason we love cycles, but I'd rather see Gahiji again on a plane that makes sense creatively. Take a look at his art:
Tumblr media
Art by Brynn Metheney
The people in this image don't fit what we know of Naya's humans.
His bio only sort-of works, if you look at it sideways.
Gahiji is revered as a god by the fierce Rahode tribe, who call him the wild heart of their people. He came to their aid during the epic Battle of Flat Sky, when the Rahode were being slaughtered by their enemies. Gahiji appeared on the hills above the battlefield. He let out a great roar and charged headlong into the midst of their foes, with the Rahode warriors rallying behind him. He saved the tribe, and now Gahiji dwells with them in a place of honor. He hunts in the surrounding jungle by night but willingly returns to the palace during the day. Worshippers pilgrimage for months to bow before the Honored One.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commanders
Due to circumstances I won’t get into at time of writing (don’t worry it’s mostly good) I’ve been forced, dragged over, and required to actually fucking read all the new Commanders from Magic’s newest set, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. I’ve only recently gotten deeper into D&D, I don’t know who like any of these clowns are (except Tiamat, obviously).
Also due to circmstances beyond my control (that are less good but understandable) my Commander night has been called off and I don’t get to play with my shiny new Cabal Coffers. It’s a bit sad, and it means I want to get my fix elsewhere.
What better way than to combine these two and just write about every AFR ‘mander? That’ll pass the time. There’s like, what, 30? I can manage that if I’m quick. Let’s get into it.
(No I’m not doing the precon cards I haven’t been staring at those all week)
Acererak the Archlich
Tumblr media
The way I see this guy going is one of two things. You either do infinite Venture by making him free (not too hard in Black, what with Heartless Summoning, Carnival of Souls, etc.) and have a probably fine combo commander. For the record, infinite Venture does kill your opponents flat-out, BUT only because of Lost Mine of Phandelver’s Dark Pool room, and only if their life totals are lower than your deck count because you’re going to be drawing it in the process. That shouldn’t be an issue, but you never know.
The other option is just playing him fairly, which requires completing Tomb of Annihilation, and you just have a kinda mid Stax commander I guess? Eh.
Asmodeus the Archfiend
Tumblr media
This Devil is clearly trying to echo prior Demons like Griselbrand and Vilis, but I’m not sure it’s going to be successful- if only because the mana investment means it’s a lot slower. And if he gets killed when you don’t have B up? Blown the fuck out. Add in no evasion and this is a God I’m happy to pass on.
 Barrowin of Clan Undurr
Tumblr media
Okay so this is kind of like Alesha, in less colours and more mana, if you manage to complete a dungeon. And there aren’t that many dungeon cards, so you’re probably playing some bad ones to make up for it. This is definitely a 99’er in that Esper Dungeon precon, and certainly not a commander.
 Bruenor Battlehammer
Tumblr media
In an attempt to solve one of Boros’s problems, Bruenor saves you a bunch of mana on equips and makes shit like Argentum Armor substantially more playable. He also gets kinda fuckin beefy with even just a few on him, hitting that 7 no matter what the first one is and 11 not long after. As far as Boros Boys go, you can do a lot worse!
 Delina, Wild Mage
Tumblr media
Didn’t we just get this card? Like, in C21? This is harder to make busted than Rionya, but it is cheaper and works with legends, so fair call. There’s not enough “advantage” dice mechanics in Red, certainly, so you can’t go probability-mad with this, but it’s pretty decent value. It also happens to be a Shaman, so it works with that new MH2 card, and that’s fun.
 Drizzt Do’Urden
Tumblr media
This guy has a lot of potential, and for added bonus, he has a cat! A lot of the cards that are good in this are the ones that are good in, say, Varolz, but honestly if you just want to play Selesnya Beatsticks then Drizzt might be the way to go. Can’t play him in Cats, though, unless you want to lose Kaheera, so.
 Ebondeath, Dracolich
Tumblr media
Yeah I don’t think this one was for this format? I mean it’s super recursive, and probably a really good candidate for a Homicidal Seclusion/Deadly Wanderings deck. I think we need one or two more of that effect to make it actually playable, but I still like the idea.
Wait why isn’t this fucker a skeleton? WoTC Pls.
 Farideh, Devil’s Chosen
Tumblr media
Look, I tried. I really tried, but there really just isn’t enough to make Farideh work yet. At least in black-border, as I think she’s probably one of the best silver-bordered commanders printed in a minute. A shame, because I sure do enjoy Tieflings, and the effect is legitimately solid if you can trigger it consistently.
 Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar
Tumblr media
While I imagine it’s a perfectly solid commander in their own right, basically Mono-Blue Edric but not group-huggy, where this is going to really shine is in Ninja decks. Holy shit, this is so nutty for those. Honestly, ETB decks in general are going to like them, because the choice of either taking damage and letting them draw or letting them reuse a powerful ETB is pretty tough. I like everything about this, except the art, because I’m not into tentacles no thank you.
 Gretchen Titchwillow
Tumblr media
When Strixhaven came out, I thought Zimone was going to be the most boring Simic commander we’d ever see. But here comes Gretchen to outdo them.
Look, Simic can do good designs. Even at uncommon- Imoti, Moritte, and Eutropia are all super interesting in my opinion. But Simic being just draw and lands has become a meme, and I’m sick of it. Extremely so, for three main reasons- one, it’s boring, two, it’s been all over the place since WoTC decided +1/+1 counters being their only theme was bad (and, fair,) and three, it’s good.
Gretchen is the most boring card in the entire set, in my opinion, and I sure hope she isn’t a cool character in the lore because that’d be such a waste.
 Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker
Tumblr media
There are 21 venture cards in Azorius, and some of them are even good. Most of the Room effects are pretty minor, however, save for some of the endgame ones (and copying Cradle of the Death God is pointless, Atropal is legendary), so copying them isn’t actually a huge amount of value. I’d still play this in Esper Venture, but I don’t think I’d build around it.
 Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant
Tumblr media
While this clearly isn’t built for this format, equipping this dragon with it’s own tongue is kind of a hilarious idea. You could do worse for Voltron decks, I guess, and in the 99 it’s both a thing to slap equipment on and an equipment itself- like a flying (and weaker) Halvar. Eh? I just wish the token wasn’t legendary- like yeah Flavour but this effect gets a lot worse when you can’t recur it. It’s rare that someone goes out of their way to kill an equipment that isn’t super busted, so Frost Tongue is probably hanging around for a while anyway.
Man, it feels awful if they bolt this one, huh?
 Inferno of the Star Mounts
Tumblr media
Okay this is fucking cool. It’s a Shivan Dragon with haste, and that ability is probably pretty feasible to activate- keep in mind Braid of Fire and Neheb and the like are in the format- and combined with a swing will just kill someone. In fact, when I saw this, my brain immediately started looking for ways to shrink it, just so you can get multiple 20-damage wallops in a turn.
…there aren’t very many. But still! Even if you can’t get to 20 multiple times in a turn, getting to 21 once or twice is pretty good!
 Iymrith, Desert Doom
Tumblr media
The fourth of our dragon cycle, because hey, it is Dungeons and Dragons. Iymrith reads basically identical to Dragonlord Ojutai, but without White- and for that kinda control deck, White is pretty nice to have. Iymrith can draw you more cards than Ojutai, but only if you’re low, in a blue deck, in Commander, so. With that said, a deck that just loads this with cheap auras/equipment might actually be pretty good, since they can load you back up on cards and keep the Voltron flowing, so, maybe? I’d honestly consider it if I didn’t already have Mono-blue Voltron as a deck.
 Kalain, Reclusive Painter
Tumblr media
Okay this is super interesting. He is, unfortunately kinda fighting with the RB precon face, Prosper, for the new RB treasure deck, but for an uncommon there’s a fair bit going on here.
Actually, wait, is there? I thought about this for another couple seconds, and I don’t think this card actually does that much. It’s one treasure, and it benefits you a little bit for doing something you frankly don’t really want to be burning treasures on? Like it probably plays a mean Marionette Master, but everyone does that.
There really aren’t any other RB Artifact commanders, though, aside from Prosper or a partner deck. So ehhhh? Why are more people playing this than, like, Bruenor?
 Krydle of Baldur’s Gate
Tumblr media
That’s a lot of words that don’t actually do a whole lot. I like the second ability, but Commander and especially Dimir aren’t hurting for evasion options. This is probably pretty good in Rogues, but that deck has a de facto best commander now, so. If this came out like, five years ago, it’d be kinda hype, but not anymore.
As an aside, I do kinda hate it when they just print a Tribal commander (or anything like this) that’s just miles and miles better than every other commander for that archetype, like with Anowon 2 or Edgar Markov or Anje Falkenrath. Wait….those are all vampires…….
 Minsc, Beloved Ranger
Tumblr media
Shivam Bhatt did a fucking excellent breakdown of this character’s lore on twitter, which I recommend reading- the history of D&D’s lore is fucking wild. As it is, this seems like a pretty fun Naya commander- there’s plenty of creatures that get way better if you make them large, even if targeting Boo seems kinda pointless.
Also, I need someone to explain to me why the “Top Cards” on EDHREC for this guy right now are, like, all combo cards.
WAIT NO FIGURED IT OUT, unlike Marath he doesn’t say X can’t be 0 so you can use him as a sac outlet, for fucks sake people.
 Nadaar, Selfless Paladin
Tumblr media
Hey remember all the things I said about the WB and WU dungeon cards? I mean, at least this guy could theoretically complete the dungeon on his own, but Mono-White is even more restrictive for what you could get, so. At least he draws a card every so often. And that anthem isn’t even remotely worth it, at all.
 Old Gnawbone
Tumblr media
Green eating up more of the colour pie, I see. Now to be fair, I’ve pondered Mono-Green artifacts for a while, and this is probably a better leader for that list than Oviya Pashiri (but…I like her….), but beyond that I’m not sure what you’re doing with this. I guess people playing Sakiko because they think she’s actually good and not because they like her have a new commander.
This is fuckbusted in the 99 of like a million decks though. So there’s that.
 Orcus, Prince of Undeath
Tumblr media
That…is so much mana. In a colour combo not especially great at garnering lots of it. The second ability scales fairly well, and it is a decent body on its own, but I don’t think this is going to be a particularly popular commander. Like, you have to pump 6 mana into this just to get a 2-drop back or to Infest the board? And that’s just the first time you cast it? Nahhhhh.
 Oswald Fiddlebender
Tumblr media
Artifact Pod? Yeah, okay, sure, that seems reasonable at two mana. Keeping this mono-white was a good idea, I can’t imagine how insane this’d be in blue. I’m no artifacts expert, I’m no pod expert, but this has to be busted, right? Like surely there’s an easy way to infinite this? Someone with more brains figure it out for me, but either way it’s still a bunch of value and also a tutor in the zone.
(convert two random 2-mana rocks or wellsprings into Basalt Monolith/Rings of Brighthearth, okay that’s a good start)
 Shessra, Death’s Whisper
Tumblr media
…ehhhhhhh. Okay, so, it’s a significantly worse Deathreap ritual in the command zone, and also a terrible Lure effect. Along with the flavour words on this taking up much more space than necessary, making the effects look much bigger and better than they are. Would it have hurt to give this deathtouch? Make it trigger on every end step? Lure more than once? I dunno, this just seems painfully weak to me. We’ve had an overabundance of Golgari commanders recently, to be fair- MH2 had 3, and before that was the enemy focused Strixhaven/C21, but that’s no excuse for this to be such trash- just look at Bruenor.
 Targ Nar, Demon-Fang Gnoll
Tumblr media
I hope you like Gnolls, because that’s gotta be the only reason you’re playing this. Hello Tuya Bearclaw/Syr Faren/im sure a bunch of other boring commanders, this is another one of you. This looks so bad next to the Gruul precon (which is apparently somehow the first Gruul precon) and, well, every other RG general from the past couple years (save, again, Tuya Bearclaw). Even the fuckin Walking Dead guy is cooler than this.
 The Tarrasque
Tumblr media
Disappointment part one over here is at time of writing the only commander from this set with a fat zero decks. Considering there were like 10 commanders at that number when I last checked, people are clearly trying out the set, so The Tarrasque being abandoned is particularly sad. It just…doesn’t do anything? It’s the fucking Tarrasque, and it doesn’t have trample, or a fear ability, or anything? Ward 10 is cute, basically being hexproof unless they have infinite mana (or an uncounterable spell), but really? I want more than this idiot for my 9 fucking mana commander. Ugh.
 Tiamat
Tumblr media
I believe I’ve talked about Tiamat before, when she got spoiled, but I can’t be arsed finding that and dredging it up. I’m still disappointed, basically, especially since I’ve now read her statblock and know what she actually does. They could’ve given her a cool ability per head like Cromat, or had her recur like she does in the lore, or something. I genuinely would have preferred if she was an Emrakul-style massive game-ender (with a no-reanimation no bullshit clause) than this. How utterly meh.
 Trelasarra, Moon Dancer
Tumblr media
This is literally just Ajani’s Pridemate but Selesnya and in the zone. Also you scry. Sure? It does also have two relevant creature types I guess, and they’d probably be good in a Soul Sisters deck. But it’s not like Selesnya was hurting for Lifegain commanders- this is basically just Lathiel but much leaner and voltron-ier.
 Varis, Silverymoon Ranger
Tumblr media
Wait you can’t even play this in Esper Venture, fuck. With Flash effects, you can start clearing dungeons well quick enough, but like, for what, a Wolf? And these defensive keywords aren’t getting you anywhere either. Blegh.
Side note- I’m a big fan of tokens, and collecting various token arts, and I was extremely disappointed when I found out that the Wolf token from this set is just…the Zendikar one again? They didn’t reuse the 3/3 Angel or the Goblin or even the Zombie, why just that one? Something must have happened behind the scenes here.
Also….Silverymoon? That sounds like shit.
 Volo, Guide to Monsters
Tumblr media
Hey, I know you, you’re from that one book. As much as Anti-Tribal sounds fun, I’m pretty sure this just turns into generic Simic value. Copying things is fun, I suppose, though not working with Legends hurts. I also appreciate that this supports playing a bunch of weirdo cards or ones that have fallen out of favor because they have more unique creature types- Anphin Mutineer, Acidic Slime, and Diluvian Primordial all seem like a lot of power here.
That said, is anyone ever letting this fucker stick around for a turn?
 Xanathar, Guild Kingpin
Tumblr media
Hey, I know you, you’re from that one book. This card is completely awful to play in webcam-commander, so it’s a good thing we’re all getting vaccinated, right?
So this is UB Gonti, I guess? And also unironically not the worst combo commander, since it stops people from playing spells on your turn in a very White-like effect. Add in some Lantern-style effects and you can get a real stew going with this guy. He looks like a lot of fun- and I’m sure he’ll end up popular as a result. Well, that and being on the cover of an expansion book gets you a lot of notoriety.
 Zalto, Fire Giant Duke
Tumblr media
Our final card, our final Venture card, and the only red one. So, uh, there are literally 4 other Venture cards in mono-red, and at least one of them is complete dogshit, so I can’t imagine this being very good. Also, it’s an Enrage trigger on a 3 toughness 5-drop? Far from ideal. I guess it’s a 7 power trampler for 5, but that’s kind of faint praise to damn with. Maybe if someone makes 5C Venture, or if Giant/Barbarian tribal feel lacking, then this guy can find a home.
Shoutout to the exactly one person who built this deck, by the way. I see you, Elder Demon Highlander, and your 100ish views on your deck tech.
And that’s the lot of them. Honestly, a lot more misses than hits, but that’s perfectly okay by me. 30 legends in a set is a lot, not to mention the 12 from the precons, and we’ve had so many actively playable legends recently that I’m fine with, like, half of these being trash. Trash is more fun anyway! Get yourself a fuckin Varis, why not.
Okay but seriously though who’s biting the bullet and building Tarrasque first? It’s not going to be me.

Legendary Commentary: Gruul
Tumblr media
GRUUL TIME
What a wonderful colorset, ramping fast to punch hard. Brutal and effective. Gruul is home to a lot of domineering legendaries that ramp up power hard. Lets take a look.
Tumblr media
Ulasht and Borby 1.0 fit into gruul’s early explorations into counters with Bloodthirst. Ulasht compliments gruul aligned creatures by getting two counters instead of one. Ulasht itself gives off Marath vibes, one interesting strat is to run Cryptolith Rites. Plop down Ulasht, remove all counters for saprolings so Ulasht dies, then use your new saprolings to cast again. If you think about it, Ulasht is similar to Oviya or Shanna, essentially getting as big as the number of creatures you control. This bounces off Dragon Throne of Tarkir, Overwhelming Stampede, and Pathbreaker Ibex quite well.
Tumblr media
Borborygmos is named after the gurgles your stomach makes when you’re digesting food. Surprisingly, this high costed Borby is only the second highest costed gruul commander in Ravnica. Borby encourages raids beefing up creatures to make them even worse. You’ll want to make sure he’s hasted with Ogre Battledriver, In the Web of War, or Urabrask effects to give an edge in combat to gain those counters. Hardened Scales ramps up the impact and Hindervines comes in as a choking fog. Terrifying Presence also does work in this build.
Tumblr media
Borby 2.0 remains my favorite lands matter commander. Despite Omnath 2.0 and 2.0, Mina and Denn, and Lord Windgrace Borby 2.0 is just so much fun. Many were excited for Windgrace because they could run him and Gitrog side by side to chain land discards for draws. Bolt for zero mana is VERY good on top of an aggressive beater with a combat damage effect. And with Ramunap Excavator and Splendid Reclamation you can drop all those lands at once. Creeping Renaissance is the deck MVP, letting you get 3 bolts out of every single land in hand for 9 damage per land. Nylea’s Intervention makes him even more insane, especially since it doesn’t specify basic lands.
Tumblr media
Gruul punisher is something we slowly lean towards and I like it. What makes gruul different compared to most punisher decks is gruul doesn’t say you can’t, they’re just going to punch you for doing it. War’s Toll, Cindervines, Scab Clan Berserker, even Manabarbs style effects to burn your enemies out of the game.
Tumblr media
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Nikya is the embodiment of gruul BDE. In gruul we say fuck it no enchantments no gods no laws. Creatures only and creatures are all we need. This is entirely possible in red green. For ramp we have Farhaven Elf, Wood Elves, Sakura Tribe Elder, Somberwald Sage, and Solem Simulacrum. For removal we have Ulvenwald Tracker, Reclamation Sage, Bane of Progress, Meteor Golem, and Woodfsl Primus. For draw we have Magus of the Wheel, Primordial Sage, Soul of the Harvest, Beast Whisperer, and Soul of the Harvest. For recursion there is Eternal Witness and Artisan of Kozilek. You can even still get in on instants and sorceries with Dualcaster Mage, and you can run tech like Gaea’s Herald and Vexing Shusher because counterspells do not matter to you. Then you have a mana doubler as a commander. Vigor takes 3 lands to cast. Previously unattainable 8 drops take 4 lands. And with any ramp you’re at 10 mana T5, that’s incredible. Its worth pointing out that Nikya only doubles LANDS not all permanents, be sure to make your ramp count.
And that’s Gruul or Die! All these colors feel wild in motion, reckless choices and hardcore damage. I’d love to hear your experiences with these, feel free to inbox me. Safe planeswalking out there.

Marath's Mod-Cons
So this challenge was an interesting one: a Marath, Will of the Wild deck, using only cards from 2013 or later. So, essentially, Marath/counters goodstuff. I can’t guarantee that this includes all cards that work well with Marath - there’s roughly three to four thousand cards printed since 2013, and I have better things to do than look through them all, but I’ve tried my best. I checked all these cards have been printed at least once since 2013, but feel free to try and catch me out anyway!
Tumblr media
This one doesn’t get a primer because all the cards should be self-explanatory, but here you go: Marath’s Mod-Cons.
Keep sending those suggestions in!

so you did a imrael/khazri meet-cute for if khazri's family never tried to kill him, but what would their first meeting be like if khazri joined the priesthood like his uncle suggested? :) thanks love u bye
There are eight gods in Zalach’ann - but no, that’s a simple lie, told so as not to confuse the peasants. The truth is that there is one god, and she is worshipped in eight aspects.
The Lady of Spiders weaves the world and weaves us every one. She snips spent threads and she alone knows what will be left when her long labour’s done. Then there is Marath Who Rides Forth, rejoicing in war and bloodshed while her husband, Iavarin of the Hearth, preserves and mends what has been broken. There is dreaming Naphael, patron of poets, prophets and the mad, and Ilinya of scrolls and lore and secrets. Xolodano the Gilded is beloved of merchants and Valian is beloved of lovers. A whore’s god and our boy’s father danced in his temples once upon a time. The last and the least is Arteru, who walks in dark places, who is hunter and hunted, and if out lost son had kept his faith then it is Arteru he would pray to.
If he had kept it - you understand there are some gods it is not fitting for a boy to serve? Well then…
Iavarin
“They say,” Imrael said, rising from his bow, “That the priests of Iavarin are the greatest healers upon the earth, and under it. I’ve travelled a long way to-”
“You and every other supplicant,” said the priest. He was a tall man, taller than Imrael, with a nose that would have been very handsome had he not been looking down it. “We do not barter away our magicks to pedlers at the gates.”
Imrael spread his hands, refusing to let his smile flicker. “Well that’s fine, I was proposing more an open exchange of knowledge.”
Behind the priest, one of the novices, robed in ashy grey, ducked his head to hide what Imrael was pretty certain was a smirk. The priest’s lip curled. “See him gone,” he said and turned away, robes swishing behind him, the great fire at the temple’s heart throwing his shadow out behind him.
“I thought ‘Hearth’ implied, oh, I don’t know, homeliness,” he told the novice prodding him towards the temple gates. “Hospitality.”
“We lean more towards ‘preserving’,” the novice said. He at least had the grace to sound apologetic.
“I’ve seen pickled lemons less sour.”
The novice smirked again. “I’m sorry. For a wasted journey.”
Not as handsome as the priest but his face was far more appealing. “Not so wasted,” Imrael told him. “Buy me a drink, show me the secret passage into the temple archives, and we’ll call that hospitable.”
“A drink,” the novice agreed solemnly. “The tenets of my god demand no less.”
Naphael
“I thought,” said Imrael. “I thought. Eight gods, right?”
“One gods. God.”
“One god, eight whosits. I thought only the big one, spider lady. I thought only she could see. The thing. The fate of everything. So how come, how come your god. How come they get to do prophecy? It’s bullshit. Your god. Is bullshit.”
That was probably a pretty stupid thing to say to a priest within his god’s own temple, but whatever they used to fuel their visions had stolen Imrael’s common sense along with his hand-eye coordination and he hadn’t had much of either to begin with.
“It’s like a carpet,” said the oracle. He was draped across the floor and Imrael’s shins in a very good imitation of one.
“You gotta prophet harder than that. Or less hard because that actually was very prophety.”
Propping himself up on his elbows, the oracle took another pull from the water pipe and said, less oracularly, “Can’t see much of it when you’re lying on it.”
“Ah!” Imrael cried. “I see. So you think it’s just a bit of blue with yellow squiggles, but then you sit up-” Imrael said, sitting up. “And it turns out that the squiggly bits are actually a dragon’s tail and the whole carpet is dragons fighting-”
“They’re not fighting.”
“Dragons. But you didn’t know. Because you only saw a little bit”
“Yeah.”
“Wow.” Imrael stopped looking at the carpet and looked at the man draped across his lap instead. Pretty, in a dreamy, disaffected kind of way. “Hey, hey, if you can see the future, how lucky am I?”
“Tonight?” said the oracle. “Not very. I’m a priest.”
Valian
“Did you come to pray?” said the dancer. He wasn’t wearing much to speak of, beside a veil and some bodypaint that glowed luminescent in the temple’s dim interior, and so Imrael struggled to pay attention. “Because it’s not- um. If you go to the outer districts, there are…places. That will serve foreigners. It’s not done here.”
“I actually came to propose an exchange.” Imrael coughed. “Of knowledge, nothing else.” That was absolutely not true, but Valian was turning out to be a decidedly conservative sex god and Imrael knew better than to push his luck in a city full of violently xenophobic misandrists.
“Oh.” The dancer’s drooping ears lifted and his stance from self-consciously provocative to something more natural. There were other priests tending to petitioners, taller and lovelier, and actually smiling behind the veils, and Imrael didn’t think it was by chance that the one who’d been sent to talk to an encroaching foreign man was small and diffident. “If you want knowledge, the temple of Ilinya. Has it.”
“Not the kind I’m looking for. I’m a doctor-” Imrael said and then waited, as he’d learned to here, for the other man to say something disbelieving but he only tilted his head so that the glass beads on his veil clacked and chimed.
“Iavarin is for healing,” he said.
“Preservation. But creating new things, that’s all on your guy, right?”
“I suppose.”
“And it’s criminally underresearched!” Imrael spread his hands, taking in the veiled lanterns and incense, the gorgeous frescos of gorgeous men and women engaged in anatomically improbable acts, and the shameful lack of academic rigour. “All that drive, all that desire - and that’s what magic is at the root of it - but a little squeamishness keeps anyone from considering the full potential!”
The dancer’s expression hadn’t been seductive to start with, and now it was something close to a smirk. “You’d be surprised. Most every petitioner’s here for research. Inspiration. I don’t know anyone that comes here just for sex.”
“That’s very unfair, and my purity of purpose is provable; you just said you don’t let foreigners worship.”
“I’m not very good at my job,” the dancer said. And, before Imrael could work out if that meant what he thought it did, “I’ll show you to the library.”
Arteru
People had said there would be danger - he’d rather counted on it - but he’d been anticipating the sexy, not-actually-that-dangerous kind. It turned out being stalked through the woods by a mostly naked man was not even slightly thrilling.
The moonlight gleamed on the hunter’s bare skin, pale as the bone of the wolf skull mask he wore. There was a knife in his hand of black obsidian, sharp enough it might not even hurt.
“I’ve heard stories,” Imrael said, voice wavering like the wind-tossed leaves on the branches above their heads. “About your god. About your hunts.” He’d also heard conflicting tales of the priesthood of Arteru; vows of purity and bloody orgies beside their kills. He didn’t think it would be a good idea to mention them now.
“You have to kill something worthy, don’t you? And that- that should be someone who can run more than a quarter of a mile at a go, someone who’s armed, which I’m definitely not, so there’s really no point in killing me, none at all, gods, don’t come any closer, please-”
The hunter’s face was as still as his mask and his steps were silent on the leaf litter, slow and sure. He was twenty yards away, and then fifteen, shadow-dappled muscles rippling with a predator’s grace, eyes hidden by the dark hollows of the skull’s sockets.
Imrael paced him, backing up, faster and faster as the man came on, praying to any of the gods he didn’t believe him that he would not trip over a tree root.
Either no gods were listening or they took exception to an atheist. He stumbled and went down hard, grazing his elbows. He didn’t feel it, even though he knew coat and skin both had been torn open. The muscles in the hunter’s thighs tensed and Imrael clutched his bag to his chest, with the vague intention of throwing it as a last, desperate defence.
(It would occur to him much later that he was a wizard, but Imrael did tend to lose his head in a crisis.)
The hunter leapt. Imrael yipped and, shamefully, closed his eyes.
There came a rush of air, a rustle of leaves, and the shrill screech of an animal in pain. No blade though. Unless he really hadn’t felt it, but that didn’t explain the yowling.
Imrael opened his eyes again. Looked up to see something sleek and green and serpentine thrashing and flailing, long body coiling around the hunter, who had one arm about its neck, one hand on the gore-slick hilt of the knife buried in its eye socket. The drake’s flailing claws had scored darkly oozing gashes across his skin, and his mask had been knocked loose to reveal a face younger than Imrael’s own.
The boy pressed in with the knife and, with a final convulsive shiver, the creature stilled, coils falling limp like a discarded ribbon. He ignored Imrael, who clambered slowly to his feet, wincing over the damage to his elbows, and then wincing more at the pins and needles pain as he set the skin reknitting.
It probably wasn’t a good idea to draw the man’s attention, given he was wild-eyed and still holding the knife.
“Thanks!” said Imrael anyway, because he’d never met a bad idea he didn’t like, and this one’s chest was heaving provocatively. “That…looks very worthy. Good job.”
The hunter, ignoring him, pulled out a knife and began to skin the carcass.
