Confiscation of Māori land

"After the Waikato war, Māori-owned land in west Waikato was confiscated. Most of the Māori population withdrew behind the ‘aukati’ or boundary line of the Pūniu River, in what became known as the King Country (because the Māori King had taken refuge there). This map shows the boundaries of the land confiscated by the proclamation of Governor George Grey in December 1864. That year soldier settlers moved into abandoned Māori villages, former military posts and new militia towns which were established to guard the frontier."

NEW MAP: Australasia 1832: Musket Wars (01 Jun 1832) https://buff.ly/2BdeYey The arrival of muskets and other European goods in the early 19th century disrupted the power balance between the already fractious Māori tribes of New Zealand. The populous northern tribes of Ngāpuhi and, some years later, Waikato mounted raids across the North Island, driving smaller tribes to seek refuge in the south. In the 1820s the Ngāti Toa chief Te Rauparaha formed an alliance of these refugee tribes, leading them on to invade the South Island in 1829–32. The Waikato War of 1863-64 A guide to the main events and sites

This document showcases the history of the Waikato Region. The natural landscape and the significant sites throughout the area. This history is important in understanding and acknowledging what has happened, who it would have affected and how those impacts are still felt today.

The Great South Road This was a really interesting perspective and insight into a place that can be seen as a more than what it currently is. This land holds history and culture, with many people still trying to stay connected to their land. To know what had happened, to understand those impacts and to decipher the hidden intentions behind political agendas. From Auckland to Drury, the road was used as a popular trade route. Its expansion into the Waikato was used to start invasion rather than increase the regions ability to access trading. I researched this to gain a better understanding of some interesting viewpoints and perspectives of places in New Zealand.

NEW MAP: Australasia 1862: Crossing the Outback (12 Mar 1862) https://buff.ly/2ShVX2z The possibility of connecting Australia to the world by a telegraph line to Java encouraged the British colonies of Victoria and South Australia to mount competing expeditions to cross the continent. Despite having better funding, the 1860–61 Victorian expedition under Burke and Wills narrowly failed to reach the northern coast and ended in disaster when the two explorers ran out of supplies on the way back. NEW MAP: Australasia 1846: Colony of North Australia (17 Feb 1846) https://buff.ly/2An0Or3 The 1830s and 1840s saw the phasing out of convict transportation to New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land. However, this did not end British demands to export their prisoners and in 1846 they authorized the establishment of North Australia as a penal colony.
