I can't find it now, which probably means it was months and months ago, but someone sent me an ask about considering adopting a cat but, as a dog person, not knowing much about adoption (e.g., whether shelter cats are good for first-time owners) and the day-to-day responsibilities of cat ownership. I can answer for my own experience, although I'm sure I'll be forgetting some important aspects!
Shelter vs Purebred:
I have a little 5-year-old shelter cat, a female domestic shorthair with a tuxedo coat! That's a big difference between cats and dogs - the vast, vast, VAST majority of cats you'll ever encounter are simply categorized as domestic shorthair/medium hair/longhair, with purebred cats being rare enough that they generally are limited to breeders - when I was an adoption counselor at a shelter, I only saw a couple of potentially purebred cats some through, and both were likely mixes. A lot of the time, cats are identified by their coat colors instead (e.g., calico, tabby, orange, tuxedo, colorpoint, dilute, etc.) with much made of the personality traits associated with those coats even though there's tragically no real science to back that up. Some coat colors are much more common with particular sexes of cats - orange cats are about 80/20 male/female, while calicos are >98% female - and that may contribute to some of the kitty stereotypes (e.g., orange cats are typically male, and neutered male cats tend to be quite calm and chill).
I'd heartily recommend shelter cats to anyone, including first-time owners. A lot of purebred cats sadly come with medical conditions (e.g., scottish folds often have significant pain due to connective tissue disorders, manx cats are prone to arthritis and spinal problems, maine coons and sphynx cats have relatively high rates of congenital heart disease, persians are brachycephalic and have breathing issues) or extra-high maintenance care requirements (e.g., sphynx cats must be bathed regularly because the lack of hair means the oils on their skin stick to any and all dirt, maine coons and ragdolls and norwegian forest cats require significant daily grooming to keep their long double coats from matting, brachycephalic cats require extra baths and grooming since they're generally unable to keep their own coats as clean, and breeds like bengals are so immensely high-energy that it's nearly a full-time job keeping up with their needs for enrichment and constant activity).
Shelter cats are almost all domestic shorthair/medium hair/longhair breeds, and tend to have the longest life expectancy of all kitties - although there are no guarantees (I sadly lost a 9-month-old kitten to a congenitally damaged heart) the lifespan numbers quoted lately for indoor-only cats tend to be around 15-25 years. And, of course, most places are overrun with stray cats - adopting from a shelter often comes with a free spay/neuter and vaccines, along with the satisfaction of having rescued a little critter that had a rough start before finding a forever home. You can visit shelters and get to know the kitties there - keep in mind that most cats are dramatically more fearful and shy in cages, and that you can often ask volunteers to point you to their favorites, especially if you're looking for an extra-chill cat as a first-time owner.
Consider adopting an adult cat! Kittens are adorable, but their energy levels are absolutely through the roof... as well as their destructive potential. Picture tiny whirlwinds with knives on their feet, the ability to jump 4-5 feet from a dead stop, zero sense of self-preservation, and the ability to keep sprinting for hours at random times of day and night. If you do get a kitten, consider adopting two - they tend to be less work since they'll keep each other entertained. Adult cats, however, tend to have more chill personalities and are more likely to settle into a routine quickly. My Clara is still pretty high-energy, but at 5 years old she's happy to have a shorter session of zoomies and intense play if it means she can then just curl up on a lap or in the sun to snooze and purr. Senior kitties are also wonderful - often cats don't have a very visible decline and remain relatively high-energy and chipper until very late in life, so it's not unusual that a 13-year-old cat will still act like a kitten and have many good years ahead, just a bit more chill.
Keep in mind that a cat is a long-term commitment. I was 7 years old when my parents brought two kittens home from the shelter - they lived another 18 years, until I was well into grad school.
Common Health Problems:
Cats that were once strays are very prone to two common diseases: FIV and FeLV. FIV (feline immundeficiency virus) essentially is a disorder of the immune system: these cats may be more prone to getting ill and may get more significantly ill when they do get sick. Luckily, FIV is far from a death sentence! These cats can live a normal quantity and quality of life with proactive health monitoring and regular trips to the vet (we're talking every 6 months instead of every year). FIV is contagious to other cats, but generally is only spread via deep bite wounds, so mixing of FIV+ and FIV- cats is possible given that you know that the cats are unlikely to get into a major fracas. FeLV (feline leukemia virus), sadly, has a worse prognosis - there's a lot of variability, but generally the best-case scenario is only a handful of years before the viral load is too high to avoid dangerous symptoms.
Another kitty disease that is sadly common among younger cats in particular is FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), which is a complication from a common kitty coronavirus that can emerge at any time and often manifests in very vague symptoms and is difficult to pin down. Until very, very recently, FIP was essentially considered to be 100% fatal within a couple of months and the recommendation was euthanasia. Now there are medications that can bring that survival rate past 90% - they're in the process of going through FDA approval, although there are groups online dedicated to getting you those medications through less official channels as needed. If anyone's familiar with Drawfee, Jacob and Julia's cat Olive was diagnosed with FIP at around 1 year old and was considered to be terminal - and, thanks to one of those online groups getting them the medication, is currently a happy and healthy 6-year-old kitty.
Nearly all shelter cats I've encountered have some level of URI (upper respiratory infection) - be prepared for a little extra sneezing and potentially having to give eyedrops the first couple weeks after getting home. URIs are SO CONTAGIOUS that it's almost impossible to keep them from spreading in a shelter setting. Also common is ringworm, although most shelters will isolate any contagious kittens and keep the infection localized.
Please spay and neuter your cats! They can have kittens incredibly young and incredibly frequently - unspayed female cats are also prone to certain cancers and unneutered male cats are prone to spraying (urinating on walls and other surfaces). The surgery is incredibly routine for both males and females (Clara had complications, but that just meant she had a few extra days of confinement) and generally the hardest part is keeping them from going after their stitches. Most shelters will provide spay/neuter services for free or on the cheap. They recover quickly and completely.
Cats also do incredibly well in a lot of different situations - deaf or half-deaf cats are quite common (nearly all blue-eyed cats with white coats are deaf) and just need some extra care to ensure they feel safe; the same goes for blind or one-eyed kitties, who can still happily play and navigate a space once they're familiar with it. Routine is key! Three-legged cats do so well that the saying is that cats are all born with a spare leg they don't actually need. If this is a recent condition, or if there are big changes in the cat's life (such as moving to a new home), just make sure to give them some extra time, support, and patience while they adjust. Amputation in cats can be really rough in the first couple of weeks, but soon enough they'll be sprinting around and jumping up on improbably high shelves.
Male cats are more prone than female cats to urinary blockages, which is one reason why I think it's important to actively clean the litter box yourself rather than using a robot. Changes in urinary output/pain while urinating/urinating outside the box can give you hints about a urinary blockage (a medical emergency in cats) or longer-term issues such as kidney disease, which can be managed with medication for quite some time as long as you know they're happening.
Cats are really good at hiding pain/illness, so it's important to be aware of signs of discomfort (sitting hunched with the neck extended can indicate difficulty breathing, whiskers extended stiffly from the face can indicate a grimace of pain, disruptions to routine such as avoiding beloved people or favorite spots, eating/drinking/litter box irregularity) and to ensure that you bring them to the vet on a regular basis to catch the stuff that might not be causing symptoms yet. Clara has a benign heart murmur and a little stiffness in one ventricle that requires her to visit a vet specialist every year or two to get an echocardiogram to check for any progression into heart disease (one in seven cats wind up with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which has a long median survival with presymptomatic treatment) - if those symptoms are ever present, we get her on medication early and it's unlikely to influence her lifespan for quite some time, whereas unmonitored and untreated, the first symptom would likely be sudden death. Knowing about this in advance also means that she has recommendations in her chart if she ever needs anesthesia for a different procedure. Having a regularly updated baseline at the vet means your cat is that much more likely to live a long, happy, healthy life.
The Day-to-Day:
Caring for cats is extremely fun, and the key is routine! Cats LOVE routine and will happily follow you around through your day-to-day. Clara is fed with an auto-feeder, which means she doesn't tend to pester me too much about food (and which means I can monitor how much she's eating and make adjustments as needed). She's prone to stress-induced stomach upset (aren't we all!) so she gets prescription food and some extra wet food with probiotics if I know something stressful is coming up soon. The auto-feeder dispenses food multiple times during the day, so she can't gorge herself and get sick.
For grooming, Clara does a pretty great job on her own, so I just have to brush her occasionally and every few weeks I will trim her claws. Do not declaw a cat! It's an amputation that is illegal in many states/countries and frequently results in chronic pain and behavioral problems such as an aversion to certain textures (a Major Problem if that texture includes litter...). If you can't trim a cat's claws on your own, try doing one or two at a time while they're sleeping - unlike with dogs, the quick is super visible on a cat's claws, so it's tough to mess up too badly. If all else fails, vets will trim claws for you, or can provide you with glue-on covers for the claws. I also brush Clara's teeth - you can get soft little toothbrushes and tasty-to-cats toothpaste, and even just them gnawing on the toothbrush can provide some benefit. Regular vet visits are also important to monitor any tooth decay that may occur. Cats can do well even with no teeth at all (the teeth are generally just for tearing pieces of prey, not chewing), but keeping those teeth healthy while they've got 'em is important, if only to avoid general anesthesia for a cleaning!
Most cats do very well without baths - so far, Clara has only needed a few little spot-cleans after minor accidents. Bathing is extremely stressful for most cats, so if necessary, I'd check out guides online to help reduce the stress levels. Many cats gradually lose the ability to keep themselves clean, so it's worth looking into, but don't expect to have to wash a cat as often as you would a dog by any means. (Unless you have a sphynx cat, of course...)
To help with scratching, provide scratchers for cats and keep them near the things you don't want the cat to scratch, as attractive alternatives (you can entice them with some catnip sprinkled on the scratchers!) - it's important to have both horizontal and vertical scratchers, since they exercise different muscles. Be aware, though, that bringing a cat into the home means that some of your furniture may be at risk. You can absolutely minimize the risk of damage, but I'd say you can almost never get rid of that risk completely.
Play is super important! I play with Clara throughout the day, but I also set aside some time every single evening to run around with her and really get her playing hard for a while (after which I clean her box, replace her water dishes, and go to bed - the importance of routine!). Cats aren't endurance hunters, but they require very little rest between bursts of energy, so hanging around for a bit with a toy even after you think they may be done is super valuable. Keep in mind that cats can get into life-threatening danger if they eat pieces of toys (strings, feathers, etc.) so it can be good to have some safe toys out all the time (e.g., foam balls) while the more dangerous ones (strings, feathers, etc.) are locked away when you're not actively playing.
Daily maintenance is pretty easy. I clean Clara's litter box at least once per day (which just involves scooping the contents into a bag that I then throw into the trash bin outside - less than 2 minutes/day) and do a deeper clean every week or two where I empty out all the litter and quickly scrub the box itself. Cats are lousy at remembering to drink, so I have three water bowls around the house - these get washed and replaced with fresh water every evening. Fountains are great for some cats (Clara had no interest) - some cats are obsessed with running water. Keeping water away from food can also help encourage cats to drink more. Apart from that, it's mostly just refilling the auto-feeder, attempting to tempt her with wet food (she's not a fan), and giving the occasional treat.
She also gets a monthly flea/tick preventative, which is just a couple drops of liquid that I apply at the base of her neck (usually while she's sleeping). She's an indoor-only cat, but bugs get inside and can transmit all sorts of bad stuff. Be warned that you should NEVER use a dog flea preventative on a cat - the dosage can be so high that it can cause a lot of harm. Make sure you have a correct dosage - ask your vet for more info.
And that's about it! In return for that minor maintenance, I get a silly little fluffy friend who follows me around and makes me laugh all day every day. She's gone from a really skittish little scaredy-cat to... well, still a skittish little scaredy-cat around most people, but around me she's affectionate and constantly looking for cuddles.
I hope this is in some way useful! I think a lot of people who don't consider themselves cat people would really enjoy having a cat - and even if you decide it's not for you, I hope you can appreciate and enjoy the other cats in your life!

( ALL IN ENGLISH ) ( questions searched on the web about Sol)
"Hey, I'm Sol and this is the Wired Autocomplete interview," Sol said smiling. Sol was given aboard. A medium-sized board where the questions were stuck with a paper and she has to peel it off to open the question. “Let’s see what you all are curious about”
[ UPBEAT MUSIC ]
"Have you ever googled yourself before?" Interviewer.
"No. I try not to."
"Alright, first question," Sol said before carefully peeling off the sticker that was covering the full question that was searched on the web about her.
[ WHAT ]
"What is Sol’s full name? My full name is Solaire Victoria Raeya Ivanov and I know it's a long name. But my parents liked it." Sol answered and smiled.
"What does Sol like in a guy?" Sol chuckled at the question. "Wow, did someone actually search this on the web?" Sol asked as she looked at her staff behind the camera and giggled. "What I like in a guy is honesty and just be good to me."
"What is Sol’s net worth?" Sol smiled at the question. "why do you guys care about this? but to be honest I don't even know what my net worth is."
"What is Sol's zodiac sign?" "Aquarius, I am. Fun fact, I actually share a birthday with Rosé. I was told recently about some of the characteristics of the Aquarius. Think I maybe have like, three of eight."
"What is Sol's phone number?" "That is a question I won't be answering. I don't give my number to anyone. So, it is maybe impossible to get my number. Sorry." Sol said and smiled blandly.
"What is Sol's accent?" Sol laughed at the question. "Honestly I have no idea. I would say British on most occasions. it also depends on where I go. When I got to America. my accent changes to American English and when I'm in Paris, I speak in a Parisian accent. Or these days it feels like I’m getting Aussie accent because of Rose. It is a bit confusing I don't know what my accents are." Sol chuckled.
"What is Sol doing right now?" Sol exhaled and chuckled " Talking to you. that's so funny people would google that. what is Sol doing now, like Google's gonna know"
"What was Sol's first song?" "The very first song I wrote was for my mom on her birthday when I was like six years old, and it was about when I grow up, can I be as pretty as you? when I grow up, can I wear your dress? and still, my parents and my siblings make fun of me sometimes."
Sol throws the medium-sized board on the floor and grabs the one handling to her.
[ DOES ]
"Does Sol have pets?" " Yes, I have 4 pets, three dogs and one cat. I have Shiba Inu named Cain, Samoyed named Chico, white Pomeranian Cece, and a Manx cat named Cleo. I adopted all of them from a rescue shelter. They are my angels."
"Does Sol speak Spanish?" Sol smiled. "Yes, I can speak Spanish because I taught myself and I'm proud of myself for doing that because I can now communicate with my fans who speak Spanish," Sol said and continued smiling as she peeled off the sticker that covers the next question and read it.
"Does Sol play guitar?" "Yes, I do play guitar. In fact, I play a lot of instruments. My grandpa taught me how to play the Violin and Piano. during my trainees days, I learned to play drums, electric guitar, ukulele, recorder, flute, and Saxophone recently. since I have much free time this year because of the pandemic, I spend my time mostly learning new instruments and learning online." Sol answered and nodded.
"Does Sol has tattoos?" "That’s a secret" she giggles, “but I do, I have four tattoos and each one of them has a meaning.”
"Does Sol watch anime?" "Do, and my top three animes are the seven deadly sins, my hero academia, and One Piece."
“Does Sol know how to play games?” “Yes, I love playing games. It’s my hobby.”
[ CAN ]
"Can Sol sing?" Sol laughed at the question. " I bloody hope so, otherwise I have no idea what I'm doing here."
"Can Sol rap?" "Yes, I can rap. I’m the lead rapper in the group."
"Can Sol drive?" "I can drive. I actually passed my driving test the first time. I do really love the freedom of just getting in your car and going wherever you want."
"Can Sol come to my birthday party?" Sol laughed."I wish I could but I think you would have to speak to my agency and my manager about that."
"Can I date Sol?" Sol laughed and grinned. the staff also laughed "that's an interesting question. Maybe but I think you would have to speak to my agency and my manager about that too." Sol said and shrugged with a chuckle.
[ HOW ]
“Okay last board, How old is Sol?" Sol read off as she peeled the tap. "I'm 26 years old."
"How to get Sol's face?" Sol laughed. "Seriously? I don't know. surgery, I think?" Sol said and shrugged with a chuckle.
"How did Sol become famous?" Sol chuckled. " by releasing good music."
"How many languages can Sol speak?" Sol smiled. "I can speak 7 languages. Korean, English, Japanese, French, Mandarin, Spanish, and Russian I'm hoping to learn Thai and German by next year." Sol answered.
“How does Sol stays in shape? By working out.” She stated. “I don’t like dieting and I was extremely bad at it. When I was training to be a singer, I had this extremely diet and I just failed. I couldn’t resist my love for ice cream.”
“How does Sol keep her hair healthy?” She smiled, “I use a specially made shampoo and conditioner provided by my wonderful stylist aka Lina.”
“Well, that’s it?.” She asked, throwing the cardboard away when the staff members nodded. “It’s been fun! They weren’t as scary as I thought they would be.”
“I hope you enjoyed the video, thank you. Mwah.” She says, staring directly into the lens and blowing a kiss at it.

Say it with me kids
Cat👏color👏is👏not👏a👏breed!!
The cat you rescued off the side of the road is NOT a Siamese, Bengal, Persian, or whatever you’re going to come up with!!!
Those are cats that are THOUSANDS of dollars, the owners are not letting them wander the streets! And they sure aren’t being born in your back yard by some random stray!
Cat color is just that-color. Cat size, shape, tail, whatever is not how you figure out the breed. Most cats, we’re talking like 90-95%, are NOT PEDIGREE CATS.
I’m sure you’re asking “But Silver, why does this matter? No one is being hurt by me calling my silver mackerel tabby an Australian Mist.”
Ignoring the fact that it makes you look stupid (“oh yeah sure I have a rare exotic cat breed worth more money than my rent. No Im not paying vet bills this cat was free in the parking lot” sure Jan, that’s definitely a pedigreed cat there.)
Breeds tend to have a propensity to certain issues due to their inherent inbreeding and unique characteristics. Take for example, the Manx cat. You know, the cute little tailless ones? They’re prone to spine issues due to that tail. Your cat doesn’t “become a Manx” because it had a tail amputation. That’s not how the breed is determined.
Also, when you call your cat a “Maine Coon mix” at the vet, and then we open your carrier (which you should always bring your cat in a carrier to the vet btw but that’s a rant for another day) and it’s a massively overweight long hair…yeah, that’s not okay. It’s not “he’s big because he’s a Maine coon” it’s “your cat is obese and this should constitute as animal abuse”.
“But Silver, what do I call my dumpster/rescue/cat distribution system cat?”
Easy!
If your cat has short hair, it’s a domestic short hair (dsh for short)
If your cat has medium length hair, it’s a domestic medium hair (dmh for short) (this one is sometimes controversial, because it’s quite subjective)
And if your cat has long hair, it’s a domestic long hair (dlh for short) (medium hairs will be put in this category if for whatever reason you don’t want to use medium hair as a category)
Statistically, you have a domestic short hair. Unless you have a pedigree, your cat is a mix. You can call it a Moggie, if you want to feel fancy.
“But what about his/her color?”
Cats can be colorpoint without being a Siamese. Cats can be blue without being a Russian Blue. Cats can be black without being a Bombay. Half the time y’all can’t say a single feature of the cat breed besides coat color.
Tl;dr: Your warrior cat OC is not a purebred unless he/she was a kittypet with a pedigree. The cat you found in the university parking lot is not a purebred. Stop it you’re making yourself look like a fool.
Edit: forgot the long haired pictures whoops
#tired rambles#this is stupid but it bothers me SO MUCH#idk what to tag this as#cat genetics with silver#basics 101

As a self-certified crazy cat person, here are some obligatory pictures of my feline overlords.
The beautiful lady up top there is Hera, queen of the house. She's a 16 year old domestic long hair who has been with me since she was a kitten.
Then there's Pippin and Merry, two almost-identical brothers who turned up on our doorstep in the middle of winter about five years ago:
And finally, Zeus, an 18 year old Manx, whose favorite place in the world is a very specific cardboard box in my wardrobe (he's tricky to get a photo of since he spends 90% of his time in there now).

Pastmaster and Michelle went out in front of Mega Kat City's city hall, if you want to destroy a city you have to go to its heart, Michelle placed her giant hourglass in the center of the street, hoping that no car would pass by to get in the way, while Pastmaster placed his clock on top of the hourglass.
"Are you sure it's going to work? Everything has to go perfectly" Michelle said, slowly moving away from Pastmaster
"oh shut up! I need contraction for this conjuration! a monster like that can't be created that easily!"
Pastmaster closed his eyes and began...
"dare the rifts of dimensions opening... the universe corroding... your time lengthening, your control surrendered!"
with the words, the hourglass shattered, sand and glass flying around them, becoming bigger and bigger
"I want to see the past in the present, the present in the future and the future stepping on air!" Pastmaster continued with a frightening smile! his watch floating as far as its chain left it, until someone picked up the watch, Pastmaster looked scared, and saw... his version from the past, bigger and with two eyes, torn clothes, with a sad and regretful face... until he disappeared with what looked like a hand on his shoulder...
"It worked...?" Michelle asked.
"Yes.."
Mayor Manx played golf in his office, until the windows opened in a violent wind, Manx gave a frightened scream while looking at the window...
at Enforcers Headquarters, everyone went out to see what was forming outside, including Feral and Felina, all scared
"what is that...?" Feral said holding Felina's shoulder, scared
and it couldn't be missed, in Jack and Chance's garage, while they were repairing a car, Jack saw the explosion of sand and glass becoming something big... very big!
"Chance... we'll have to leave this car for later..."
"why? What happens..?" Chance got out from under the car and got scared along with his friend "holy cats!"
the creature stood up, it was blue like the sky, its legs were covered by its celestial dress, while its straight hair fell down its shoulders, holding Pastmaster and Michelle in its hands, they were barely visible from afar, but to the giant creature, which it opened it six eyes, they were as visible as an airplane, the top eyes were red, the bottom ones were blue, and the middle ones were purple, red and blue, like Michelle's.
"I'll take care of this monster, you enjoy the destruction!" said Pastmaster.
"thank you Pastmaster..."
Pastmaster was taken to the head, and Michelle to the city hall window, scaring Manx even more.
but then the monster started opening with its multiple arms! dimensional portals! then chaos began! with each portal opened, another opened in a random location, leaving a villain from another dimension, but it didn't necessarily have to be a villain, as luckily, Garlie and Letícia left the dimensional corridor through one of these portals, in the city hall of the original dimension, in front of Callie!
"ah! we're out!" Letícia celebrated, as she stood up and lifted Garlie up.
"but where did we out?!" Garlie asked.
"at city hall, vice mayor Callie!" Letícia ran over to Callie, who seemed dazed, with the loud noises coming from outside and now these two
"who are you!?!" Callie asked, pulling away a little.
"Long story, but in short, we're from another dimension! It's hard to believe but- "don't explain it to me now, it has to do with Pastmaster, right? okay, you two come with me, I heard a scream coming from Manx's office" Callie interrupted Garlie, as the three ran to Manx's office.
upon entering, Manx shouted Callie's name and ran behind the three, even though he didn't know Letícia or Garlie and in front of the rooms was Michelle, i mean, Time Witch.
"hi Michelle! looks like we made it out alive, huh!" Letícia said, swaying her hips
"It's Time Witch for you! And don't go cheering, Leticia, everyone, YOU'LL ALL DIE AT THE END!" There wasn't even time for Manx and Callie to ask who she was, as two other portals opened next to her (apparently opened by Michelle herself) and from there they left! the Metallikats! and Dr. Viper! both with an another kat, and with a sinister smile on their faces!
but far from there... in Dark Kat's bunker... he and Hard Drive seemed to be hatching a plan, to kill the Swat Kats, until a portal opened... coming out the evil Swat Kats, Creeplings and Dalila...
"Hello, dad."

Hi! I recently found your blog and even though I stopped reading the books after Outcast, I’ve found myself getting back into Warrior Cats and absolutely love worldbuilding! I’ve always wanted to make my own clan, and finally got an idea that stuck with me!
I haven’t gotten much farther than the actual allegiances but I’d love your thoughts on their names and if the descriptions match the names well enough. I’ll also include the relationships and other random tidbits I’ve come up with. It follows the traditional warrior cats clan style, but I’m also working on my own unique clan with new ranks and all!
As I said in my recently posted message on my blog, I don’t feel entirely comfortable rating names. However, from looking over the submission, it all seems lovely and cohesive. Well thought out! Can’t wait to see where you go with it next!

Mistwhisker and Silverstorm are littermates. Both of their parents are deceased.
Gingerheart and Eagleclaw are littermates. Both of their parents are deceased.
Speckleshine and Eagleclaw are mates. Their children are Sunkit, Lynxkit, and Frogkit.
Stumptail used to be a kittypet named Maisie, but she got left behind when her Twolegs moved and the clan took her in. Stumptail is based off a Manx. Her Twolegs were illegal cat breeders and dumped her because she was born blind in one eye.

Meet RiverClan's High Ranks!
The opening is almost here... Today's spotlight is on a few of the RiverClan council of SOTC! Come meet them March 6th!
Mudstar LEADER - 77 MOONS - HE/HIM Mudstar is currently the longest standing member of Riverclan's council. Having acted as their deputy for many moons before his promotion to leader, his service to his clan is one of his highest honors in life - aside from his place as a mate and father, of course. With a heart that beats strongly for the cats of his clan, Mudstar cares deeply for every cat who's ever called Riverclan their home. He's a realistic and diplomatic individual, with a tendency to worry that keeps his clan fed and moving properly. He isn't all serious, though - listen close enough in the nighttime hush, and you just might be able to hear the soft jingle of a kittypet toy getting batted around...
Chrysanthemumstare DEPUTY - 67 MOONS - SHE/THEY/SUN Don't let her plethora of scars fool you - Chrysanthemumstare is a lover far before she's a fighter. A mate to three and a mother of two, Riverclan's deputy is a gentle giant with a thick skull and a bleeding heart. Sun hasn't quite caught a break in the 30+ moons sun has spent serving on Riverclan's council, and the hardships sun has endured have tested suns loyalty to suns clan time and time again - does suns heart lie with what's best for Riverclan, or what's best for suns family? Even she isn't quite sure.
Echoheart HEALER - 80 MOONS - HE/THEY Long-haired, seal-point manx with blue/brown heterochromia.
Teaflight HEALER - 73 MOONS - SHE/HER Teaflight is a cat who, ultimately, wants nothing more than to live her life in service of her clan. She does so as a healer, chosen by Starclan themselves to look after her friends, family, and clanmates. While she can be a bit snappy at times, really all she wants is to make sure everyone's as safe as they can be.
Adderstrike HEALER - 69 MOONS - SHE/HER Grey oriental shorthair with black spots all over her body, two long fangs, and golden eyes.
Gracklesnapple HEALER - 47 MOONS - HE/HIM Black tom with pale grey undersides, a flattened face, and red-lavender eyes. Rookpaw HEALER APPRENTICE - 18 MOONS - HE/HIM A shorthaired black smoke tom with faint spots, white markings, and umber eyes.

Info and facts about the Manx cat
The Manx cat is a breed of domestic cat originating on the Isle of Man, with a mutation that shortens the tail. Many Manx have a small stub of a tail, but Manx cats are best known as being entirely tailless; this is the most distinguishing characteristic of the breed, along with elongated hind legs and a rounded head.
Facts: Manx cats cost between $500-$1,500.
The commonest developmental problem seen in Manx cats is spina bifida. Spina bifida is a general term used to describe several conditions where the neural tube which forms the spinal cord fails to close and the arches of the vertebrae (bones of the spine) also fail to form completely.
The Manx cat personality is playful, affectionate, and interactive. They're great for families that have time to give them the affection and attention that they need.
Manx cats do not vocalize often, but they do have a distinctive vocalization. In addition to normal feline purrs and meows, they also produce a trilling sound. This sound is most commonly heard from mother cats callings their kittens.
Long-haired or semi-long-haired specimens are considered a separate breed, the Cymric, in some registries. Manx are prized as skilled hunters, and thus have often been sought by farmers with rodent problems, and been a preferred ship's cat breed. They are said to be social, tame and active.
Due to their unique physical characteristics, Manx cats are prone to certain medical conditions that can impact their average lifespan (about 10–14 years, shorter than the average cat)
There will rarely be issues with aggression. Manx are loving and loyal to their family. Some will form unique attachments to one family member but still get along with everyone in the household. Despite their hunting background, they rarely become agitated enough to get aggressive.
It was probably a Manx cat. This breed originated centuries ago on the Isle of Man, off the coast of England. The missing tail is actually a genetic mutation that appeared on the island at some point. The mutation thrived in the isolated location, eventually producing its own distinct breed of cat.
Manx cats are intelligent and can get along with other animals. They are often said to behave like dogs because of their sense of loyalty to their owners and their love for interactive play. More importantly, they can live well beyond 15 years.
Manx cats have long back legs and can jump extraordinarily high; some reports state a 4ft high jump from a standing position! Their long back legs also make them extremely fast runners. Their long back legs compensate for their lack of tail and they have an arched back to enable them to balance.

as far as I'm aware, you can stop dangerous spinal conditions from developing in Manx cats as long as you breed them with tailed cats often enough. so some of the kittens will be born with tails and some without, but there won't be the extreme spine shortness that leads to health problems. that usually comes from breeding two Manx together that have shorter than usual spines. if you're an ethical Manx breeder, you would probably not use those cats for breeding at all, to avoid the risk of developing health problems.
so it is possible to ethically breed Manx cats, if you're careful, and I am sure it's possible to ethically breed many breeds of cat, if you treat the health of the cats as paramount. I think many of the problems come in when there is a high demand for a certain breed, resulting in them being very expensive. this leads inexperienced breeders, or people who are not breeders at all, to see dollar signs, and set up substandard breeding operations that aren't ideal for the health of the kitties. because they care more about making money than about cats.
it is true that many cat breeds are formed by inbreeding or backcrossing (mating a cat with its parent). someone sees a cat with an interesting trait and says "hey I wonder if that can be bred for" and then does that. but genetic diversity is good for a species! it keeps health problems from developing for this exact reason!
especially since, like, there are so many unwanted cats in the world ALREADY. you don't need to deliberately breed more! what we should be doing is spaying and neutering as many of them as possible!
one fun fact is that the characteristic colorpoint Siamese coat, with the dark tail and paws, is a natural variation. it doesn't lead to health problems, it's just a way cat coat colors can work. the cats are usually born white or cream-colored, and the darker colors gradually develop in the places on the cat's body that are slightly cooler, i.e., the extremities. this makes a lot of sense in that darker colors absorb more heat, so that's where you'd want to put the darker fur anyway! there are of course purebred Siamese, but as far as I know, you don't need to backcross them to get the right coloration.
cats that have one colorpoint parent and one tabby parent often end up looking really gorgeous (do a search for "lynx point") with no fancy inbreeding necessary. there are so many beautiful cats already in the world, and of course the most beautiful cat to you is always going to be the one you love.
if you do want to buy a cat instead of adopting, make sure you know what you're signing up for. hairless cats look cool, but they require regular bathing since they don't have hair to absorb skin oils. Bengal cats look cool, but they are extremely active and often have problems with using the entire house as a litter box. (there are reasons why wild cats don't make good pets!) a lot of people want special breeds for how they look, and then can't handle their behavior or temperament, which is much more important for a good relationship with your cat.
having fostered kittens for a couple of years, I know firsthand that domestic cats come in all kinds of personality and temperament, even from the same litter. you might get one who is shy and skittish and one who is outgoing and friendly, in the exact same litter of cats. shelters will probably have some information about the personalities of the cats there, and you can decide beforehand if you want a cat that's easygoing and independent, or one that just wants to sit around the house and sleep most of the time, or one that needs a lot of play time and loves human interaction. you don't need to choose a breed and pay for it, because you can get whatever kind of temperament you're looking for for free, or at least much cheaper than buying a purebred.
of course many people end up with cats by accident. we took in a cat that someone else found but couldn't keep, and while my roommate would probably pick a cat that is friendlier if she were going to choose, we've gotten along with our shy kitty just fine.
...okay, apparently when I start talking about cat breeds the entire rant comes out whether I want it to or not, sorry about that.
looks at the cat breeds blog and gets mad about cat breeds all over again
#as usual the villain is capitalism#cat breeding#cat breeds#kitties#cats don't have a lot of natural variation in size and shape because the cat is the perfect size and shape already#also cat coloration is fascinating and i'm obsessed with it#did you know many cat coat patterns are determined in the womb#so your cat's clone would not be visually identical to your cat!#that's so cool
