☆ Family / 가족 in Korean ☆

Parents: 부모(님)

Mother: 어머니 / 어머님 (more formal)

Mom: 엄마

Dad: 아빠

Father: 아버지 / 아버님 (more formal)

Husband: 남편

Wife: 아내 (I have also heard the word 와이프 in modern Korean dramas - especially The Penthouse)

Child: 아이

Children: 아이들

Son: 아들

Daughter: 딸

• What girls call older siblings

Older brother: 오빠

Older sister: 언니

• What guys call older siblings:

Older brother: 형

Older sister: 누나

• For younger siblings the word is the same, regardless of gender:

Younger sister: 여동생

Younger brother: 남동생

동생 can also be used without any prefixes, and it means younger sibling. Remember that 남 (for male) and 여 (for female) are prefixes indicating the gender, and you can omit them in this case.

Siblings: 형제 자매 (it translates as "brothers and sisters" in English)

Sisters: 자매

Brothers: 형제

Grandparents: 조부모(님)

Grandmother: 할머님*

Grandma: 할머니

Grandfather: 할아버님*

Grandpa: 할아버지

* Adding 님 at the end of some words makes them more formal.

Mother-in-law (wife’s mom): 장모님

Mother-in-law (husband’s mom): 시어머니

Father-in-law (wife’s dad): 장인

Father-in-law (husband’s dad): 시아버지

There are some casual (or more common) ways of calling the parents of your partner, such as using the nouns for dad (아버지) and mom (어머니), or the ones for brother or sister when talking to their partner's siblings.

Mom’s side of the family: 외가

Aunt: 이모

Uncle: 외숙부

Aunt’s husband: 이모부

Uncle’s wife: 외숙모

Dad’s side of the family: 친가

(This one is more complicated because of the social hierarchy)

Uncle (younger, unmarried): 삼촌

Uncle (younger, married): 작은아빠

Uncle (older, unmarried or married): 큰아빠

Aunt: 고모

Younger uncle’s wife: 작은엄마

Older uncle’s wife: 큰엄마

Aunt’s husband: 고모부

When they are not officially married:

Girlfriend: 여자친구

Boyfriend: 남자친구

Fiancée (female): 약혼녀

Fiancé (male): 약혼자

Nicknames:

Honey: 여보 (used when talking to the husband)

Sweetheart: 애인 (used when talking to the wife)

Cutie: 귀요미 (extra: this is an adjective as well and it is used especially by kids or when talking to children; you can check 귀요미송 (Gwiyomi Song) by 하리 (Hari) on YouTube to get an idea)
