Uggghhh Dread Mountain and Maze of the Beast are both like. Really long sequences that really don't have a good midpoint to stop at and break up the quests for the player and it's just like. Hellish to write. Like all the other books have two or more acts that I've been able to break them into (ie: saving Manus and escorting him to Raladin but not actually going to the Lake of Tears, going to Noradz but not going to Hira directly after, entering the Rithmere Games but not going directly to the Shifting Sands) but Dread Mountain and ESPECIALLY MOTB are going to be A Lot at once. The main issue with MOTB being that after Dain gets captured the party can't really Not chase the pirates, and I'll have to include Tora as the quests endpoint instead of it ending after they get out of the Maze like in the book. Doing so much mental calculus to make this thing work and be relatively open-world but I don't think I can fix this one without seriously compromising the plot........

As Sharn herself lay lost in sleep, the Dread Gnome Gla-Thon, Steven of the Plains, Zeean of Tora, Manus of Raladin, Gers of the Jalis, Doom, Barda and Jasmine gathered around the bed of Lindal of Broome [...]
A neat little detail is the way that this is almost exactly who was present for renewing the oath of loyalty in 1.8 (including a poisoned loved one!) but! Every tribe except the mere has a representative! What is this LMAO

Manus Appreciation Post Part 1.
Okay, not going to lie. Manus is one of the cutest characters I have ever seen and you can’t change my mind. I love him so much, and I wouldn’t even mind if he had his own book that also went even more in depth about the Ralads and Raladin.

Fandom: Deltora Quest Summary: The kingdom gathers to celebrate the wedding of their beloved king to one of their favourite heroes. Characters: Doom, Jasmine, Lief, Sharn, Ranesh, mentions of many others. Pairings: Lief/Jasmine, Jarred/Anna Notes: For the wonderful @dragonloverdoran, who requested Doom & Jasmine’s relationship from Doom’s POV (which I don’t think I’ve ever really done!)
It was a glorious day. The chill of winter had long since melted into a lovely spring. Bright flowers bloomed in window boxes and gardens. Birds flitted merrily between the trees that dotted the palace hill, and all in Del― and many more from across Deltora― gathered beneath them.
The crowd began at nearly the top of the hill, and flooded well into the city. People chattered and laughed, embracing their neighbours on such a happy day. Vendors wandered through the masses, selling soft buns stuffed with vegetables and spicy meats, and small cups of ale. Children darted away from their parents and joined their friends, running loose amongst the people, as their king had once done not too long ago. Palace guards dressed in beautiful blue uniforms good-naturedly urged the people to separate into a path.
Doom stood surrounded by his friends. The top of the hill had been saved for the spectators dearest to Lief and Jasmine’s hearts. Everywhere Doom looked, there was someone he knew, and even more that he did not. Several people who had once fought at his side in the Resistance had already come to talk and share news. Manus and many from Raladin played music, and the people of Broome had somehow convinced a large group of Torans to join them in a strange, slightly awkward dance. It was incredible, Doom had to admit, to be able to see just how many lives Lief, Jasmine, and Barda had touched. All were dressed in their best clothes, and all were alight with happiness.
Doom himself had not been in clothes so fine since he was a boy. But these garments were not made by unseen servants, but by Sharn, who had despaired when she had first seen the clothes he had meant to wear. Sharn herself stood beside him, radiant in a yellow dress, her dark hair pulled down across one shoulder. Faint, nearly unnoticeable pink scars still lingered near her temples; reminders of her near-death only months before.
“They are late,” she said, her forehead furrowed with concern. “I hope they are not delayed by the crowd.”
Doom raised a dark brow. “I am sure the audience will alert us long before we see them.”
“Even so, it will take them an age to walk through all of that.” Ranesh had appeared behind them, silent as ever, even as he bounced tiny Josef on his hip. Sharn stroked a finger against the baby’s soft cheek.
“It is not a long walk from the forge at all,” Doom told him.
He risked a glance toward the bottom of the crowd, although he knew he would see nothing of interest yet. When he turned back, Sharn bit her lip to hide a smile.
“Jasmine told me you made her dress,” Doom said, and Sharn’s smile faltered a little.
“Have you seen it?” She asked, almost anxiously.
“She would not let me.”
As if on cue, the voices of the excited crowd grew to a roar where the base of the city met the swell of the hill. The Torans finally returned to Zeean, and the sweet music of the Ralads became more uniform. Sharn gripped Doom’s arm, and her dark eyes met his.
“Our children,” she mouthed. His large hand covered hers, and he knew that she was thinking of those who could not be there to witness, for he was too.
The cries of the people rose in waves as the little, hidden procession drew closer. The cries died eerily at once. Doom watches as fingers began to point towards the sky. Sharn let go of his arm with a gasp. Huge shadows passed over the crowd, and Doom turned his face to the clear sky. Seven shining dragons swooped closer and closer to the ground, and Sharn’s hair whipped against Doom’s face by the force of their wings. When the dragons had nearly reached the tops of the tall trees, they drew up again, startling amazed cries as the began flying in a steady spiral in the sky. Doom’s breath caught in his throat as he gazed upon the impossible creatures.
“Doom!” Sharn’s cry pulled him back to the earth. The cheers of Deltora had grown louder, and the crowd had begun to part a little more. And then― there they were.
Lief wore a splendid tunic of deep purple, which the Belt of Deltora shone brilliantly against in the sunlight. Filli’s little head poked out of his pocket, and Barda was two steps behind him in his uniform. Lief wore on his head a garland of sweet jasmine flowers, weaved by his own hands. The whole kingdom had come to share in his happiness, but he only eyes for Jasmine, whose hand he clutched so tightly.
Jasmine had threaded bright wildflowers of all colours in her mass of black hair, forming something akin to a chaotic, wonderful garden. Kree was perched on one shoulder, staring haughtily at the gathered crowd, and Marilen followed just steps behind, dressed in a pale blue robe. Jasmine’s broad grin flashed against her brown skin, and she laughed at something Lief whispered in her ear.
It was the dress she wore that Doom’s eyes were drawn to. It was a deep, forest green― not bright, like the emerald, or her eyes, but the shade of green that spoke of secrets hidden by deep woods. Thin sleeves stopped just below her shoulders, and the neckline grazed her collarbones. The rest of the dress was loose, so that her movements were free, and yet it flowed like water. The hem was between her knees and ankles, displaying her bare feet. The garment was made of delicate silk, something that would have never been available in Del at the time, but still he recognized it. It was Anna’s wedding dress.
Doom stepped back involuntarily, and Sharn’s hand returned to his arm.
“I hope this did not upset you,” she whispered in his ear. “You know I kept Anna’s dress hidden when you both left Del. Jasmine wondered if she could wear it, and she was so disheartened when it did not fit. I swore I would recreate it for her, and she asked me not to tell you, for she thought you might not like it…”
Jasmine and Lief grew closer still, and the world around Doom seemed to tilt. He could see Anna in the rough, homespun version she had worn, so happy as she took his hand in hers. He took a deep breath and blinked, and the world was right again. Memory gave way to reality. Jasmine was there, and she was in love― happy after years of hardship. This was not a day to grieve.
“You did a remarkable job,” he told Sharn truthfully through the noise of the crowd, and relief flooded her face, making painful words easier for him to say. “It is a beautiful dress.”
The cheers grew louder as the procession of four entered the massive group of their friends. Whoops and hollers rose from the Broome crowd, and the Dread Gnomes raised their fists in the air. Jasmine looked at the crowd then, her twinkling eyes dancing over her friends, and to Ranesh, then Sharn, and finally Doom. Her eyes lingered on his face a little too long, asking an unreadable, silent question. After a moment, Doom grinned widely, raising his hands and applauding as she passed. Jasmine’s smile broadened and his heart swelled.
Finally, the couple stood atop the hill. Barda clasped Lief’s shoulder, and said something Doom was just far away enough to not be able to hear, although he thought he might have made out the word ‘proud’. Marilen embraced Jasmine, and then stepped with Barda behind the pair. The extraordinarily large crowd fell silent as one. Doom could hear Sharn’s breathing beside him; laboured by tears.
Jasmine smiled and raised her right hand to cup Lief’s cheek, a customary action which he mirrored. Their left hands intertwined. They were silent for a moment, sharing silent secrets with their eyes. When they spoke, it was as if with one voice.
“It is our love, not our duty, that binds us on this day. You will shine in the light of my heart, and when I am lost, I will find my way home by the light of yours. Let my soul be your shelter, let my hands heal your wounds. I will stand against your fears, and I will be the cause of your joy.”
They were ancient words, first spoken by Adin and Zara on their wedding day, then repeated by Deltorans across the centuries. Again, Doom’s memories drifted, and he recalled how he had held Anna’s hand and cupped her cheek as they smiled through their wedding vow with only Crian to witness. She had been so beautiful, her cheeks flushed with joy. Doom glanced at Sharn, whose lips were moving along to the words in her own remembrance, eyes bright with happy tears.
“We shall be equal in all things, and divided in none,” Jasmine and Lief continued. “Let not war, nor sea, nor enemies part us. When death comes, it will be in my arms that you find rest. On this day, I give to you my soul, my love, my heart. This I vow.”
They were silent again, and after a moment Lief tilted his head so that his forehead pressed against Jasmine’s. Tears were running freely down both of their faces, even as they smiled.
Doom realized, then, just how very lucky he was. Death meant nothing to a man who had lost everything, and that had once been the man he had been. But now he had everything― so many friends, and even a family. And a daughter― an infuriating, brilliant daughter.
Jasmine tilted her head up and raised her other hand so that both cupped Lief’s face. She laughed through her tears and kissed her husband hard. Deafening cheers erupted from the audience as they applauded their king and queen, and Doom heard his own voice raise with them. The dragons roared triumphantly from above.
Jasmine had struggled too hard for so long, but washed in sunlight on the hill, she looked so gloriously joyful that it made his heart ache. He could almost imagine Anna beside him. Perhaps her face would be ghosted with the promise of laughter lines, perhaps she would have the occasional grey hair that he had begun to find on his own head.
“Oh, Jarred,” she would smile, threading her arm around his waist. “Look at our happy, darling girl.”
“Yes,” the man he had once been would tell her, kissing her hair. “She deserves this, and more.”
But Anna could not say those things, and neither could he. Instead, he smiled, and crossed the hill toward his daughter.
He did not have the kind of love or life he had imagined when he was young. None of them did. But they had all found their own kinds of love in the end, and that was enough for them to begin to heal.
#deltora quest#sorry this took so long zann!#i've wanted to write the wedding for a while and this seemed like a good way to do it#i like the idea of doom kind of drawing strength from jasmine#doom#jasmine#lief#sharn#ranesh#anna#lief x jasmine#jarred x anna#my writing

What size is Deltora?
@lukassprehn challenged me to try and work out the size of Deltora, and I love a challenge. He has done his own calculations with some people over at the wiki- I tried not to use too much of what they have done, just to see if all of our independent calculations line up :)
This is probably my longest ever post (and I’m not exactly known for brevity) but I wanted to show the basis of my calculations. If you don’t care that much:
TL; DR: Deltora is the size of Belize (or maybe Peru), this post is very long and the maths is likely faulty.
Also sorry people who use the imperial system, you’re out of luck on this one.
Here we GO
Before we start, some assumptions I will be making:
The average walking speed is 5km/h. This is the companion’s maximum speed. They are walking for hours on end, and generally exhausted, hungry and trying to preserve energy.
If the books say they are walking “all day” this does not mean they actually walked for 24 hours, or even 12 hours straight. 8 to 10 hours would probably be the absolute maximum you could do in a day consistently without complete exhaustion and eventual collapse. They also presumably take breaks occasionally.
The companions are not travelling as the crow flies- there is a bit of twisting and turning in their path, and they often take a less direct path so as to stay hidden. As such assume everything is at least a little off.
As for the examples I used to calculate distance, some notes:
I have cherry-picked the best examples where we are given some certainty as to the time which has passed, and where they have travelled to and from. Walking for ‘days’ is too vague.
Some examples are just unsuitable for this calculation. For example, Lief says it will take ‘weeks’ for them to reach Dread Mountain from the Dreaming Spring…. But that involves climbing a freaking mountain, so I don’t count it.
I am excluding any time they travelled via magic, boat, cavern (bee-driven or otherwise), dragon or Muddlet because who knows what the average speed of a Muddlet is. Horse riding is more fair game, but I will focus mainly on walking (so early series 1 is my main source)
So let’s calculate:
Del to Wenn Del path:
They have walked for “many hours”, but it it is still night time (“the moon’s ghostly light beamed down on them”)
As it is summer time, the nights are fairly short. I’m going to guess that Deltora is not, say, Alaska or Finland, so the sun does actually set for a few hours. I’m going to use Melbourne (biased) – maybe around ten hours of night during the peak of summer
The sun had already set long before Lief got home, heard his parents’ secret, and left Del, and it is still not yet sunrise. So let’s say they have been walking six hours, absolute tops
They are walking along a road, and as this is the first journey their energy is still high. The average walking speed therefore seems reasonable. This means that at a maximum the Wenn Del Path is 30-35km from Del
Del to the Os-Mine Hills
Lief, Barda and Jinks take over a day to reach the Os-Mine hills, leaving at around dawn. They are riding horses. Horses trot speed is around 6.4km/h, so if they rode for ten hours, that is 64km.
However Jinks is slowing them down with his whining, and the Os-Mine Hills (which they reach on the second day) are difficult to navigate on horse. Moreover, we do not know how long they were travelling for on the second day (it seems not very long).
So let’s downgrade that to a maximum of 50-55km (48km with eight hours riding on day 1, and a max of 7km, with the horses struggling over the terrain on day two).
Jasmine and Glock make the same journey on foot. They get more than a twelve-hour head start (leaving in the afternoon), but also get captured earlier, so we can easily say that their travel time is only a little longer than Lief and Barda’s. At 55km, travelling on foot at 5km/h (with a very significant slow-down once they reached the steep Os-Mine Hills), this means they did the journey in probably thirteen hours… this appears to make sense.
Raladin to The Lake of Tears (D’Or)
They leave Raladin in the morning, and arrive at the Lake of Tears as the sun is sinking in the sky. Let’s say this is a travel time of around six hours minimum.
The distance is therefore 30km. However we need to take into account that they are walking over “rugged hills”, and that Manus is likely still exhausted. They also took a break for a short time. I will downgrade the distance travelled to 20-25km
Ruby/Opal border to Tom’s shop
Let’s assume that “the border of Thaegan’s lands” is the border of the Ruby territory. The companions sleep very close to this border. When they start walking again it is only a while before they see another sign for Tom’s shop, then “(a)n hour” before they “round a bend” and see the shop itself.
They are walking “slowly”, so let’s downgrade the walking speed to 4km/h. I would say it is a 5-8km distance between the border and Tom’s shop.
Tom’s Shop to Broad River (east bank)·
“Four days of hard marching”
If they are walking for eight hours a day, that makes 160km walked. If ten hours a day (yeesh) then it’s 200km walked, but I do not think this is likely
Okay so with that in mind let’s do this.
(pls ignore the line from the Broad River Bank to Hira I made a boo boo ty)
Looking at the distances between Del and the Wenn Del path and Raladin and D’Or, things seem to line up. The huge outlier here is the distance between Tom’s shop and Broad River- there is no way that was 160km. I am going to call that an anomaly, or a continuity error (because honestly I don’t think Rodda was paying that much attention to all of this, and I don’t blame her).
SO, if we are taking the distance between Del and the Wenn Del path as our guide.
Using my copy of Secrets of Deltora, the scale is about 5cm = 30-35km, or 1cm = 6-7km. This means the Raladin to D’Or distance come out as 21km (around the distance I originally calculated). So things seem to line up.
That gives us these measurements (approx.):
Dragon’s Nest to Isle of the Dead: 30cm = 210km
Del to Shadowgate: 17cm = 119km
Deltora in square kilometres: 24,990 km squared approx
In other words, Deltora is TINY- about the size of Belize or Rwanda.
If we take the Tom’s Shop to Broad River as our guide instead, the scale is 3cm = 160km, or 1cm = 53.3km…. let’s say 1cm = 50km, just for simplicity.
Dragon’s Nest to Isle of the Dead: 30cm = 1500km
Del to Shadowgate = 17cm = 850km
Deltora in square kilometres: 1,275,000km squared approx
Under this method, Deltora is about the size of Chad, Peru or Niger.
Either way, Deltora is much smaller than I had always believed.
I will let you decide whether you believe any of this, or which version you are going with- Belize-sized Deltora or Chad-sized Deltora.
My personal opinion is that the distances are simply inconsistent. Rodda dug herself a bit of a hole by letting Lief and Barda travel to Wenn Del in only a few hours, and she later tried to correct it... or she literally did not give it another thought.
But even so, there is more evidence pointing to a small Deltora than a huge one.
#personally i think rodda just made it up as she went because why would she have worked this all out#but anyway it's fun to speculate#also i don't do maths so if there is a blinding error pls let me know#deltora quest#pls correct my dodgy maths honestly i have no idea i haven't done maths in 8 years and it's so late at night

‘Our friend Nanion, chief of D’Or, was the means of my arriving so quickly. Nanion has a way with horses which I do not. His feet reach the stirrups, for one thing! But I say it was an uncomfortable journey. I was terrified half out of my life, and bruised from head to toe!’ [Manus exclaimed.]
Nanion laughed. ‘To follow a swarm of bees over rough country is no easy task,’ he said. ‘And this Ralad complained from the beginning of the journey to the end. I am relieved to have arrived at last, and to be free of his nagging.’ But his eyes were warm as he spoke. Plainly, he and Manus had become good friends.

i’m having fantasies of an open-world rpg type of game for Deltora Quest
like can you imagine??
your main story quest would be kicking out the Shadow Lord, and by tangent collecting the Gems. but then you could have all these side missions like saving Manus or finding the Resistance mountains stronghold or delivering some goods to Tom or thwarting some Grey Guards or trying to collect Blood Lilly pollen for a mad researcher.
imagine travelling around the country. imagine trying to catch a muddlet or a horse or fly i n g with a dRAGON. imagine seeing how magical the world is on your mount. how colourful and mysterious it is, and yet how destroyed and in need it is. how mysteriously monstrous the world is. i mean i’d wander into the Os-Mine Hills and Act Suprised when the Granous catch me.
Del would be dark and disgusting with ominous music but if you infiltrated the Palace the music would go into Dramatic Hype music. like in Breath of the Wild, i was so pumped up with the theme playing in Hyrule Castle.
(here’s a link if you want a listen :) )
youtube
you might find Manus or another Ralad to guide you to Raladin, but you could wander and explore and find it yourself. the blinding cleanliness of Noradz and the damp and decay of Hira. being able to waltz into Rithmere during the Games but also when they’re not running (unless they’re constantly open?). being able to take part in them or watch. imagine the festivities in Rithmere omg. seems like a fun place. exploring the catacombs of Dread Mountain. entering tora and all your melee and weapons are disabled. can’t jump. the ruins of Jaliad. i’d be sad.
CHARACTER CREATION1!!!!!1! imagine picking a tribe? facial features? body types? weapons? skills?
maybe in this type of game you would be Lief’s position as the player, but not the heir. and there would be a major quest mission where you’d have the Absolute Joy of finding someone in hiding. or we sacrifice character creation to be Lief, or choose between Lief, Barda and Jasmine and travel as a Squad. maybe even play as Doom? running the Resistance with your gang, reminiscent of the Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2? you know what, since this is all hypothetical i’m going to disregard how much work it would be (hence unrealistic) and just say ALL OF THE ABOVE.
STORY MODE - you play as Lief. - the main quest follows the big objectives of the first series. - but there are heaps of side missions to complete still. honestly, i almost always do side missions before the main missions. look, helping build Tarrey Town in Breath of the Wild was really interesting i’m sorry Zelda can you hold Ganon back a little longer? but this means we can follow all Lief’s impulses like trying to rescue the people of Noradz or going home to attempt to find his parents, but really only succeeding in walking through the raided Forge for real.
FREE PLAY MODE - you create your character. - perhaps this is unlocked after you complete the main quest and defeat the Shadow Lord, and you’re playing through the beginning of Lief’s reign. - you do whatever you want. - there are missions but not as ‘big’ as saving the world. but, you might get caught up in a conflict between pirate crews. or you do a good turn for a farmer and they get raided for livestock because you showed them favour, so you may feel like you gotta go help the farmer our. maybe you just cause chaos. maybe you’re just trying to support your village. maybe you’re going to go hunt down some vagabonds. maybe you’re going to clear away some evil. explore. protect. attack. befriend a dragon and conquer. adopt a million dogs and sit and read for the rest of your life. i’m not gonna judge.
BONUS/ALTERNATIVE MODE - you play as Doom. - main quest is his path from the Shadow Arena to leading the Resistance movement to the end of the Shadow Lord’s reign. - side missions would be things to Support Your Cause or being a Good Person while acting like You’re Not. because why not? i love him. it gives you a different perspective during the Shadow Lord’s reign. you have to organise and run the Resistance movement. tutorial is teaching you to fight adsflgjkdfhg you wake up in the arena and you’re immediately trying not to die
omg it’d be like in Skyrim
but more like
but following Doom’s journey would be so interesting, don’t you think? like how did he make a deal with Tom to get him to give the Resistance discounts? who tipped him off that something was off at Rithmere? did he find an abandoned criminal lair in the mountains and decided, you know what, let’s make this one of my bases. how did he meet Lindal? Steven? the emotional roller coaster of the Dain arch. let’s not forget that Dain chose to appeal to Doom’s “tenderness of heart” (the words he tells the trio ‘Marie’ and ‘Ida’ chose to appeal to) when he showed himself at a burning farm, a youth on his own. all the travelling to find allies, funds, and supplies. most likely saving people along the way, and giving them shelter in a Resistance Stronghold or other.
wow i’ve really gone on a tangent today, i didn’t mean to spend so much time on this. but this would,,, honestly be such a dream come true you know? just wandering around in Deltora. doing whatever i want. like what more could i want?

Ring and Enter
Shortly after rescuing Manus from a troop of Grey Guards, the team had escaped into some woods during their run. Once they heard the Guards had marched the opposite direction, and with Jasmine confirming they were indeed leaving, they were able to breathe a little easier. Though this was of course very odd. As Grey Guards tend to go after their targets until they succeed or can’t pursue no longer. They all eventually noticed a sign that read; “Ring and Enter”. Beneath the sign was a bell hanging about. This scene is pretty simple to understand, and all the same holds it’s importance, but I must say how I can’t avoid thinking about how it is portrayed in the three ways we had of the first series of Deltora Quest.
The Chapter Books
Lief had thought it was weird seeing the sign and the bell underneath. He looked through some bushes to see a white house in the distance. He had been so excited, while he was calling out to Jasmine and Barda, his voice cracked. (Sorry, I thought that was funny.) Both Jasmine and Barda got excited, and took this as “good fortune”, Lief happily “cried;’ A bath, hot food! And perhaps a bed for the night!” Jasmine, after reading the sign out loud, said; “Very well, then, Let us obey!” then rang the bell. After doing so, they “ran through the bushes” and into the yard, then they realized too late that they were in quick sand. Whilst panicking, they began to sink quickly. Berries and sticks Lief had gathered previously, have sunk into the quicksand that surrounded him. He had noticed that everything had been sinking, except for a piece of wood that had stayed afloat. He then yelled out to Barda and Jasmine and told them to grab onto it and lay flat and to do so slowly. They had heard him and done what he asked. While doing their very best to maintain balance, as even the slightest bit of losing it would be their end.Lief saw the people who had lived in the white house coming over their way. He hoped they would come quickly and in time to rescue the trio. And so they used something that was described as “like a hook” that was used to pull everyone out one at a time.
The Manga
Shortly after rescuing Manus from the troop of Grey Guards, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine had began discussing what their plan was to get to the Lake of Tears from that point on. Since the lake was not too far from the village of Raladin, Barda thought that they can ask Manus to take them to the site himself. Lief excitedly announces;”We’re practically already there! Then we can have a nice relaxing camp out here tonight! I’ll go find some firewood!” then cheerfully runs off into some wooded area. The other two of the usual trio, decides to follow and help him. Lief finds a wooden board covered in moss, and without a second thought, says to himself;”this will burn nicely!” and then notices the white house far off in the distance. He yells outs “Barda, Jasmine! Over there! A house! Let’s ask if we can stay the night! Maybe we can use their bath, and have a nice, warm meal!” quickly rings the bell under the sign. It is then that he rushes over towards the house, with Barda and Jasmine close behind him, telling him not to be in a hurry. That is when they all started to sink in the quicksand. Lief, who still had the board in hand, wipes off the board, and immediately puts together both pieces, one of which he had, and the one with the bell just moments before, and figures out the message. “Ring of Quicksand, do not enter” He quickly lays out the board into the middle of the three, and directs the team to grab it, and to lay out flat slowly. The other two follows these instructions, and they all moved as if they were “swimming” to get closer to land. It was a great struggle for them all, and they noticed there was no way the board can continue to hold all three of them. Barda then lets go and tells Lief and Jasmine to go on without him. That the “quest must continue.” The teenagers refuse to leave him behind for their own survival. They are a team, after all. As Lief said “We’re in this quest together!” Barda then apologizes teary eyed and grateful his comrades have not given in to his sudden suggestion to sacrifice himself for both them and the quest for the gems. Shortly after, two elderly folks threw out a rope in the middle of them. They pulled them into their yard safely, and into an entirely undiscovered danger they’d soon find themselves in, disguise as warm comforts they sought out before the marsh they fell into.
This post is long so the rest will be under the cut.
The Anime
It wasn’t long that they had gotten away from the Grey Guards during the rescue of Manus of Raladin. Once they had figured they were far away enough, and that confirmed their pursuers had no longer been following them, they sat Manus down against a tree, to free him of his chains and to let him rest. Manus had nodded, insinuating that he was grateful they had saved him. Jasmine told him that their was no need to thank them. Lief starts to turn away from the Ralad man, and informs him and his comrades that Manus should stay behind as they scout the area to make sure it is safe. Seeing Lief start to walk away, Manus grabs ahold of his cloak, as he did not want them to leave. As Manus recognized the path they were on. Lief assures Manus “Don’t worry, we’re be right back.” Going through the wooden area, Lief stops and lays his hand on the handle of his sword, stating that “it is weird that their are no Grey Guards around.” Barda had agreed with him. Analyzing their surroundings, they spotted the white house and sign. They were all shocked that there are people living out there. Filli began to panic, which got Jasmine’s attention. The trio had approached the sign, and followed what it said with no questions. Two older people had cracked out their door, and looked outside towards them. Lief responded “It’s alright. They just look like an older couple.” As for Barda, he started to head towards the house first saying they should ask them for directions, with Jasmine following behind going “Wait for me!” Quietly they walked towards the home, right into the quicksand. Everyone began to panic, which had only made them sink faster with their movements. Lief spotted a broken board, and grabbed it. With the board in hand, he instructed his friends to grab a hold of it. Jasmine gets frustrated and yells out “You got to be kidding me! Holding on to that isn’t going to help!” Only a second later after she announced her thoughts on the matter, the elderly pair had thrown out a rope, for everyone to grab a hold of and drag themselves out. In Jasmine’s response to this way, “took them long enough!”

#but also it's possible to read that scene in raladin that they're writing for Lief Barda and Jasmine's benefit?#because even if the ralads had designed a sign language to make up for not being able to speak#there's no way someone who wasn't a ralad would be able to understand it unless it had been designed before the ralads lost their speech
true in some cases, but the scene I’m referring to is this one:
‘Lief watched Manus, who, surrounded by his friends, was [...] scribbling on a wall of the cavern with some sort of chalk, rubbing marks out almost as soon as he had written them.’ (Lake of Tears, chapter 12)
so, -not for quest fam’s benefit bc theyre not the intended audience -only barda can read ralad script, and he says hes choppy -doesn’t seem to be weird for the ralads -so im counting that as against evidence for sign language -unless idk sign language varies a little from group to group and script is standard -but then raladin seems to be very close knit -point is, manus is clearly writing and its not for the quest fam
i dont CARE that theres no textual evidence for this and i choose to ignore the scene in raladin where the ralads write on chalkboards to communicate with each other okay LISTEN they 100% developed a sign language in the hundred years they couldnt talk
#thank u for ur time#i happen to have strong feelings about this dont mind me#Deltora Quest#Emily Rodda
