I had a shrink appointment today and while I could not see it I knew my doc was going through the five stages of grief while I explained my fool proof strategy for doing my t shots despite a crippling fear of needles: By abusing my vastly more crippling fear of being an inconvenience.
My mother and I play phasmophobia together every week. she usually has a pretty limited time to do this bc she's like. a doctor and a college professor whos always busy. So I asked her to just. hold me to doing them. We don't start playing until the shot is done. so my needle fear doesn't matter because now it's Wasting™ her time and I have to do it quick. Using one neurosis to defeat another.
It's a horrible coping mechanism because it's feeding the inconvenience fear, but it is definitionally a coping mechanism.
#im a 'has a panic attack during every injection or iv theyve ever gotten' type of scared of needles#no it genuinely has nothing to do with pain the needle itself is the fear not the using of it#like i told this story before but i have these sewing pins with lil bow ties on them and i had to get my dad to take all the blue ones out#because they were triggering the same part of my brain iv needles do#just the sight of them with the rest of my cute sewing pins was a problem#And the fear of being an inconvenience is so bad i cant eat around people or be in crowded spaces or talk at get togethers#without being paralyzed by fear of Being In The Way. its so bad ive been avoiding using my power chair bc it makes me take up#slightly more space than i would just standing. and i never took my manual out and about because i moved too slowly in it#and i dont take my crutches on planes despite using them everyday bc they cant fold up like my cane can and so are In The Way#one of the big reasons i dont use the chairs in stores is they have back up alarms. and i hate making noises in public#Yes this is part of the reason i want a Rottweiler for my service dog because i want people to look at the doggie Not Me.#I like people! i like being friendly and talking and making little connections with strangers!!! But i cant be the one to initiate or#be In The Way of a peaceful moment#dont look at me#this is also a big issue i have with making friends or changing the nature of a relationship because like. im autistic#I have Rules for social interactions memorized that i will follow. but moving people from one category to another#is difficult. It is too the point i had problems for litteral years talking to my boyfriend as though#he was a person i knew well and cared deeply for because i kept using the 'rando guy im flirting with on the Internet' script#I have commissioners i want to be friendlier with but my brain says No Stop that is an Impolite and Overly informal way to talk to#a customer™ despite them not being customers when they arnt in the commission process#im like thise huskies who are scared of carpet because its Different than the floor they're currently standing on#its Too different:(#and to be clear i am Completely aware of how none of this makes logical sense and is in fact deeply self destructive#That does not fix it. it is so ingrained in my head that im certain i could convince my brain to let me bite off my own fingers#before i could convince it to let me talk to someone at a help desk or ask my order be corrected at a restaurant

Some recent sketch ideas of Rí'an's parents (+ a 2024 sketch of Rí'an's face for comparison). They're all city elves~
In the top left is An'zen, Rí'an's dad and the one she takes after the most, physically (especially in their resting-bitch-faces lmao). In the top right is Rí'an's mom, Tui'las, whom Rí'an takes after the most in personality.
It's fun to "reverse engineer" an OC's face to figure out how the parents look (pardon the random/historically inaccurate hair/clothes, I was largely focusing on their faces)~

damn bro that factory thing slaps, tell us more?
Sure!!
So, one thing very important about The Factory is that no humans work there, aside from a very, very small handful in the coding department. Everything else is either run by The Factory itself, or through blank, uncustomized Units that lack personality. This means that, no matter how much someone might beg for help, once they're caught in The Factory's clutches, that's it. They're going to be repaired, whether they like it or not.
Since humans love struggling so much, however, The Factory has learned, so to speak, that it needs to chemically paralyze any "Units" that try to escape from the line. And sure, if someone were to try to stay still anyway, it would likely still paralyze them, since the chemical it uses to induce paralysis is nonreactive to whatever actual Units are made of, and The Factory would rather waste two seconds injecting a liquid that does nothing, rather than waste up to 30 minutes trying to tire an uncooperative "Unit" out so it can "repair" them.

Turns out I'm allergic to the sesame oil suspended Testosterone too :') I'm curious if maybe it's the common preservative used? I can see about getting compounded T again but this was a 3 month supply so I have to wait 2 months to get a new one. I should reach out to this other clinic to see if I can get the pellet but making appointments is hard. Planning on continuing to take this T that I'm allergic to for just a little bit longer? Don't think I'll be able to make it the full 2 months but I'll be okay. W the cottonseed oil allergic reaction, it escalated in severity with every injection. Just like, the worst it ever got was very itchy. I can live with itchy for a little while

You've seen this message around, yeah? No doubt you've seen that one post telling you to add a few filters to your adblock, but maybe that's stopped working recently. Well I'm here to tell you, don't do that! You may be actively preventing yourself from getting around the anti-adblock!
Here's the skinny: Youtube's anti-adblock is not very sophisticated. It really is incredibly easy to bypass, but Youtube is continually changing how you get around it to try and stay ahead of the guys maintaining adblock. The good news, though, is that uBlock's volunteers are constantly updating the default uBlock filters to get around that!
If you want to get around YouTube's anti-adblock, you need to follow the instructions from the official uBlock origin team here.
Tumblr media
DO NOT manually input any filters!!! Youtube regularly changes how to get around those, so you WILL be up shit creek when those filters become obsolete!!!
In addition, since Youtube regularly updates the anti-adblock to require a new set of filters, there are periods where the filter maintainers haven't quite caught up yet and uBlock fails again. Don't worry; this never lasts for very long. I've seen the "YouTube doesn't allow adblock" message maybe once in the past few months and it went away after ten minutes.
EDIT: This post is gonna be out of date soon. Youtube is switching to serverside ad injection, this will defeat this method of adblock. Other ad blocking methods may emerge in response to this, but for the time being this advice is no longer relevant.

"One of the least respected but most important ecosystems on Earth are seagrass meadows, and a pioneering robotic solution is helping marine scientists restore these underwater gardens.
The ReefGen Grasshopper can plant dozens of seagrass seeds per minute. Not only is this faster than a human diver, but much safer as well.
It works by injecting a tiny slurry of sediment wrapped around the seagrass seed into the seafloor. After covering a growing plot of four seeds, the robot ‘hops’ about 30 centimeters away and starts again.
Despite covering a minuscule portion of the seafloor, seagrass meadows are estimated to hold 35-times more carbon than terrestrial forests—amounting to around 18% of the total carbon stock of the world’s oceans.
ReefGen’s founder Tom Chi dreamed up the idea after watching the degradation of coral reefs on his home island in Hawaii. The first iteration of the robot set coral ‘plugs’ onto existing reefs to help regrow them, but the technology was prohibitively expensive for wide-scale use.
Now however, broader selections of off-the-shelf parts have driven down the costs of manufacturing and maintaining underwater robots, according to Chris Oakes, CEO of ReefGen.
“Manual planting works, but robots are really good when things are dull, dirty, dangerous, or distant—the four Ds,” Oakes told CNN, adding that at the moment, Grasshopper is piloted with a controller by a human on the surface.
“Right now, we’re focused on the planting, the biology, and the mechanical aspects, once we’re confident that that’s all designed the right way, we will overlay more semi-autonomous features like navigation, so you don’t actually have to pilot it,” he said.
ReefGen has been able to not only expand into restoration of seagrass meadows, but also see its robots used in oceans around the world. This July, Grasshopper planted 25,000 seeds in Wales. In October, ReefGen teamed up with the University of North Carolina (UNC) Institute of Marine Sciences to test various seed replanting methods out on the state’s declining seagrass meadows.
Oakes says that as cool and “flashy” as a robotic solution might seem, the most important factor in its success will be the long-term monitoring of the fields it’s replanting. Are they growing to maturity, are the seedlings dying off before then, will they live long enough to seed and germinate fields of their own, how do fields it plants compare to fields planted by hand??"

I saw a few people saying don't trust mech repair shops that are clean, and that you gotta go to the ones that are dirty and have crap everywhere 'cause they'll do a proper job and fix your rig cheaper and better.
While I agree in general, it's an even better sign if that shop has that *one* bay and workbench area that is conspicuously clean. Every good workshop has *that bay*.
That's the bay for when they need to go cleanroom on something. Pulling and refurbishing laser arrays, injection pumps, etc. Manually recalibrating gyros. Re-valving joint dampers. Fabbing up "custom" bracketry to fit that aftermarket heat exchanger that's *supposed* to be a direct bolt on OE style replacement and you just *know* it's not going to be that simple cause it never is, but the efficiency is so much better than the factory crap and who the hell wants to pay for a new genuine exchanger anyway, if you can even get one?
The number of absolute cowboy techs I've seen that think that just because they've done a bunch of work on their pa's agricultural mechs for years, they know everything there is to know about mech internals, strip down and reassemble a combat-rated set of hand actuators literally just on the god damned shop floor, only to wonder why all the hydraulics piss fluid out as soon as they run it through a test cycle. They might *look* the same as pappy's mech actuators, but they have way tighter tolerances and they run *way* thinner fluids in them. You get so much as a nick in the sealing surface of one of those rods and it's not gonna seal again. And before any goobers come for me saying "JuSt RuN tHiCkEr OiL" if you put anything thicker than 2W-5 in those things they'll just lock up. Won't leak but you'll not be using that hand for anything but karate chopping your opposition.
Anyway rant over, TLDR next time your stompy death machine needs actual proper work done, and not just entire unit assemblies throwm at the problem, take it somewhere that actually cares to understand the concept of machined tolerances.

US Harm Reduction Resources
continually updating, not a complete list. feel free to add on any resources you find helpful.
Free Safer Supplies:
Each organization will have different supplies, but generally, harm reduction orgs provide things like syringes, safer snorting + smoking kits, Narcan, condoms, lube, and wound care supplies. Each org has different policies for how to get supplies--some do deliveries, some have drop in centers, some only do one to one needle exchange, some are more flexible.
Next Distro: mail based syringe provider for certain states. Also mails free Narcan.
NASEN: national map of syringe providers
a lot of harm reduction collectives aren't going to have their information listed on big national websites--it's always worth searching "harm reduction in my area" and seeing what's around you. Even if you don't live in a big city, there might be a harm reduction organization in your state that can help you find someone closer to you. there's a lot of rad people doing underground work who want to be there to help you who aren't as easy to find online. If there's street medic collectives, mutual aid groups or groups like Food not Bombs in your area, you can ask people in them who might know where to find harm reduction services in your area!
Drug Users Unions:
Drug users unions are activist groups made for people who use drugs, by people who use drugs! Drug users unions do advocacy work to end criminalization, as well as providing vital community support. Many drug users unions are also inclusive of sex workers and work to decriminalize sex work as well. You can search for "drug users union" in your state.
Urban Survivors Union: National, has resources for creating drug users union
Chosen Few: Drug users union for Black drug users in DC
San Francisco Drug users union
Sex Work Advocacy Groups:
Organizations that do decrim advocacy and provide support for sex workers.
Sex Worker Outreach Project USA- National, has chapters in many states.
Black Sex Worker Collective
Sex Workers Project
How to Use Safely:
Guides, videos, toolkits for safer use!
Harm Reduction Coalition Resource Library
Getting Off Right: A Safety Manual for Injection Drug Users
Safer Crack Smoking
Safer Snorting
Safer Hormone Injection
Levels of Risk: Veins
Wound Care video w/ ASL
How to Use Fentanyl Test Strips

spaceship affini who's a total sub and her owner has configured her to register spatial phenomena like types of xenodrugs. she flies through a nebula and gets injected with a simulated class-A, and suddenly she can feel every single bit of debris bouncing off of her hull and it feels amazing
on another trip, she ends up too close to a gas giant and the crew have to assume manual control because she can't stop giggling and going "guysssss it's so pretty in here have you seen all the nice colours? and the gas smells soooooo goooddd ahahahaha"
also at one point she goes past a sun that has a bunch of ongoing coronal mass ejections and just gets hypnotised by watching the surface of it

The Common Chupacabra (F.N. 03761, I. gastroferrugo ) is a common sight for paranatural workers of all stripes. Occupying an ecological role not dissimilar to a fox or other mid-sized canid, they are often dealt with in very similar ways and thus hold minimal threat to humans.
While their feeding habits can be gruesome, chupacabras remain skittish around humanity and avoid areas of human contact. Indeed, the titular "goat-sucking" that they are so named for is only known from specimens who were already injured or displaced, and thus habituated to humans and their livestock for lack of more suitable prey items. They can, and often do, act defensively if backed into a corner, but the most common chupcabra defense mechanism is that of flight and avoidance, only taking more drastic actions if forced to or if young are threatened.
It is because of this that paranatural agencies will commonly use them as training material, assigning newcomers lost, confused, hurt, sick, displaced, or habituated chupacabras as their first mission. Due to their straightforward nature and lack of threat to humans, many hold positive views of chupacabras, some even using their local morphological strain as mascots.
It is not uncommon to see chupacabras in captivity, as they take well to basic training for veterinary assistance, research purposes, or education among the agencies who keep them. While far from the training associated with domestics such as the dog, chupacabras can still be taught using methods spearheaded in zoos, and are often food and toy motivated. Small rodents, pre-killed, or disposable pouches filled with warmed blood are often used as treats, and enrichment is provided through offerings of different sources of blood.
Chupacabras are sangivores, and thus primarily feed on blood. However, this is where the subtle gradient between sangivory and typical carnivory becomes apparent, as certain morphological strains of chupacabra will vary in their feeding methods. Certain strains local to parts of South America or Northern Africa will inject a digestive enzyme into their prey to liquefy their innards. Other strains found in Arctic locations or high altitudes will demonstrate a lack of preference towards food choice, consuming solid parts of the muscle and organs alongside their primary target of blood. Other strains, most commonly associated with Oceania, have a "messy" feeding style that will force the entire head into the body cavity, both manually blending the flesh into a liquid, and in more accidental consumption of solid matter. Most chupacabras will target prey that is a fraction of their own body size, but will readily bring down prey targets as large as deer as well.
The most notable trait of chupacabras is their large variety of morphological strains. Those who are not yet familiar with the paranatural may assume that there are many different species of chupacabra and that they are an ancient lineage which has experienced much speciation.
They are not. Early researchers made the same mistake in categorizing them, assigning the chupacabras they were most familiar with as the Common Chupacabra and providing a list of, now defunct, names for the other varieties that they saw. Some speculated that chupacabras were not, in fact, a genus, but that they were a niche that multiple different animals had specialized into.
Later research proved them to be wrong. All chupacabra are a single species, fully capable of interbreeding with every other member of their species, regardless of the differences in morphology, reproductive strategy, or feeding methods. The variety of morphological strains observed, then, is a highly visible demonstration of chupacabra relatedness and gene flow. A population will be equally related to each other, and thus arrive at a standard for morphology, but as this population is split up and gene flow is disrupted, more isolated populations will begin to veer wildly from their initial appearance.
Indeed, this has been used to form maps of chupacabra genealogy and movement patterns, as well as serving as excellent indicators for other monster activity. The most isolated populations can appear nothing at all like their forebears, due in large part thanks to their supernatural skills of adaptation. All chupacabra have a high degree of mutation when they breed, with a high number of these mutations being not only survivable, but thriveable, and occurs with a high prediction for environmental stresses. It is commonly accepted that local strains will remain close to their initial body plan with minimal variation, but research is still being done on the genetic drift over time, as well as reports of sudden, abrupt change in response to environmental catastrophe.
This is exaggerated even further when chupacabra from only distantly related populations interbreed. Further research needs to be conducted.
-
A little sketch and blurb for a Monster of the Week game I help co-DM with @carthus-flame-arc! One of our players took home a chupacabra joey last time, and so I thought it best I draw some growth charts for it.
