im looking forward to studying Modern Greek language and culture at university, and simply love your blog. i have fallen in love with this mysterious beauty! which parts of Greek culture, whether it be literature, art, history, schools of thought, anything at all, would you recommend me to look at in further depth? something less talked about, or more niche perhaps? much love x
Ohhh wishing you the best in your future studies! Hoping you will have a great time!
Some recs of things I personally enjoy from the Modern Greek culture, they are subjective, I have mentioned most before, so I am technically playing the broken record again!
Entechno, Rembetiko and classic Laiko music genres. Check the composers Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis and Stavros Xarhakos as a start. But I doubt you won’t learn about them through your studies anyway.
Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) is my favourite artist but a lot of modern(er) Greek art is very interesting actually
Alexandros Papadiamantis, Nikos Kazantzakis in literature
Erotokritos, both the poetry and the music and all its folk impact
Odysseus Elytis, Giannis Ritsos, Constantine Cavafy and Nikos Kavvadias poetry
I can’t not say the Greek Revolution but I doubt you can escape it in your studies anyway. Also the Axis Occupation Resistance, the Pontic Greek genocide and the population exchange with Turkey. But you will learn about all this, I believe. Check also about the civil war, which I am not sure they will teach you about at length. And the military junta.
Ioannis Kapodistrias and Eleftherios Venizelos as political profile studies. Check out those of Konstantinos Karamanlis and Andreas Papandreou as well if you are interested in politics, not because they were anywhere near as great as the former two but to explore the unbelievable impact they still have in Greek society.
Doesn’t matter if you are Christian or not, I really like Byzantine ecclesiastical music and architecture from an aesthetical standpoint so I recommend
Byzantine and Modern Greek folk fashion
Check out Georgios Gemistus Plethon, the Byzantine Greek Neoplatonic philosopher
Would I deviate if I just said Byzantine history? Oh well. It’s fascinating to explore the “relics” of Byzantium in the collective Modern Greek conscience.
Easter and Carnival traditions, their origins, historical evolution and practice today
Golden age cinema comedies (50s - 70s)
Watch the Island once you can understand Greek well (if you don’t already) or find English subtitles. It’s such a perfect and accurate window to Greek ethos in the first decades of the 20th century
Watch TV comedies of the 90s and 00s.
That might be harder to explore but I like the significance of Epitheórisi (Revue) as a theatrical genre in Greece. In general, check the tradition and huge presence of satire and satire comedians in Modern Greek society. Political correctness has made satire shrink drastically but I think it has an interesting history throughout the 20th century and first years of the 21st.
If you are interested in a school of thought, check out the work of the philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997)
If you don’t speak Greek yet, some of the recs are more niche than others and you will probably have to wait to be somewhat fluent in Greek before you can explore them properly. But music, art, philosophy… you can start with these. As for the history, you can also start, but make sure to also read Greek historiography once you know Greek better because… well.

Ulvi Dogan and Erol Tas in Dry Summer (Metin Erksan, 1964)
Cast: Erol Tas, Hülya Koçygit, Ulvi Dogan, Hakki Haktan. Screenplay: Metin Erksan, Kemal Inci, Ismet Soydan, based on a novel by Necati Cumali. Cinematography: Ali Ugur. Music: Manos Hatzidakis.
"Other cultures, other customs." That's the liberal mantra when it comes to things other countries do that we disapprove of, though we usually work on persuading them toward our views, especially when those things seem exceptionally cruel, like footbinding or female genital mutilation. Sometimes, though, we have to swallow hard and accept. Metin Erksan's Dry Summer, a much-praised Turkish film, contains two instances of animal cruelty. The first is a close-up of a chicken having its head cut off. We've grown so far from our rural roots that a scene like this can be shocking, but we should be obliged to realize that it's a routine occurrence on farms around the world -- and that thousands of chickens are slaughtered in supposedly more humane ways every day so they can arrive in supermarkets neatly wrapped in plastic. The other scene is much harder to take: A dog is shot and yelps in pain before it dies. It's possible that Erksan has faked this animal's suffering and death -- we later see its carcass being hauled away, head lolling -- but I can't bring myself to countenance its raw inclusion in Dry Summer, even though the killing plays a role in establishing the mood and intensity of the film. Otherwise, Dry Summer is a savage melodrama about a war between a landowner and the other farmers who depend on the spring on his property to water their crops. As characters in the film repeatedly say, "Water is the earth's blood." When Osman (Erol Tas) decides to dam up the water near the source on his property, he naturally inspires animosity: The dog that's shot is Osman's. But there is a war in Osman's household as well, when his younger brother, Hasan (Ulvi Dogan), takes a pretty young wife, Bahar (Hülya Koçygit). Osman is a widower, and he spies through a crack in the wall at Hasan and Bahar making love. As the war between the water-deprived farmers and the brothers intensifies, with the dam -- little more than a sluice gate -- continually under attack, Osman finally sheds blood, killing Veli Sari (Hakki Haktan), the leader of the rebelling farmers, during a nighttime assault on the gate. But he persuades Hasan to take the rap: Osman claims that he's more mature and experienced and so the better choice to keep the farm going while Hasan goes to prison. Naturally, Hasan's absence also gives Osman an opening to seduce his brother's wife, which he finally succeeds in doing when a newspaper report says that a man named Hasan has died in prison. Osman has been intercepting Hasan's letters to Bahar, so ít's easy for him to tell her that her husband is now dead. Erksan stages Osman's obsessive pursuit of Bahar well, including a scene in which he's milking a cow as she watches, so he begins fingering and even mouthing the teats suggestively. In another scene, Bahar is bitten by a snake, and Osman relishes the opportunity to suck the poison from the wound in her leg. Eventually, of course, Hasan turns up alive, after being released from prison in a general pardon, and takes his revenge on his brother, resulting in a strong closing scene in which Osman's corpse floats down the watercourses after the dam is broken. Some very sophisticated camerawork adds to the impact of the story, and Tas makes Osman into a memorable villain. Which is why I regret that the killing of the dog mars my reception of the film.

Twenty-five years without Manos
Manos Hatzidakis (also spelled Hadjidakis; Greek: Μάνος Χατζιδάκις; 23 October 1925 – 15 June 1994) was a Greek composer and theorist of Greek music. He was also one of the main proponents of the "Éntekhno" form of music (along with Mikis Theodorakis). In 1960 he received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song Never on Sunday from the film of the same name.
He died on 15 June 1994 in Athens at the age of 68. In 1999 the City of Athens dedicated Technopolis in his memory.

Manos Hatzidakis instrumental music in a Greece video??? Hnnnngggg finally this is close to how I envision a proper travel video about a country... not with this horrendous cringy lounge music or this royalty-free bouzouki theme that is used in literally EVERY Greek video that doesn’t have the aforementioned freakish lounge music.

The Sunday Song – September 9th, 2018
(Or a famous song from a famous feminist movie that is titled with my name)
Love that became a double-edged knife - Melina Mercouri (Αγάπη που 'γινες δίκοπο μαχαίρι – ΜελίναΜερκούρη) Music by Manos Hatzidakis Lyrics by Michael Cacoyannis
youtube
In 1955, Greek cinemas met ‘Stella’, a unique and original female protagonist of the same named film that was based on the myth of Carmen. Stella was created from Greek Cypriot director Michael Cacoyannis. Actress Melina Mercouri, who had a wild and intense stare, brought on film an unprecedented movie character.
Manos Hatzidakis wrote the score for the film and Mercouri herself sings the movie's trademark song "Love that became a double-edged knife" ("Αγάπη που 'γινες δίκοπο μαχαίρι") that has become an eternal success. Mercouri sings excellent and most famous female Greek singers include it in live recording or concerts.
Love, turned into a double-edged knife, Long ago you were giving me nothing but joy but now you drown the joy in tears I don’t see a way out, I can't find a cure (bis)
Fires are blazing deep inside his eyes the stars turn dark when he looks at me turn off the lights turn off the moonlight once he takes me, so my pain cannot be seen
Hatzidakis has admitted that the music for "Love that became a double-edged knife" based on a melody by Vasilis Tsitsanis from the song “Trelos Tsigganos (Crazy Gypsy). However, that might even not be the case, since “Trelos Tsigganos” was written by Ioanna Georgakopoulou in 1947 and is included in an official record with her name.
Plot:
The story of a fiercely independent and uncompromising young woman. Stella, a rembetiko singer at Paradise nightclub, lives a guiltless, turbulent life. Her innate independence and assertive nature lead her to numerous passionate love affairs. While with Aleko, son of a wealthy family, she decides, as is her habit, to break up before the relationship wears off. Once she meets Miltos, a young football player, she seems to change. At first, she avoids his advances, but, later, gives in to him. However, she can only be with him on her own terms. No matter how much she loves him, she mostly values her freedom. Things turn complicated when she is called to choose. She repeatedly rejects Miltos marriage proposals. When Miltos finally forces her to accept the idea of marriage, Stella does not appear in church, despite Miltos repeatedly warning her that he will kill her if she doesn't marry him. Miltos kills her with a dagger at end of the film.
The film ends with an iconic scene where Miltos tragically kills Stella with a knife. The phrase ‘Stella leave I am holding a knife!’ has become a widely spoken phrase in Greece ever since, and, well, if your name is Stella, expect to listen to it countless times in your life (starts around 02.00).
youtube
The film sparked great controversy – many Greek critics and a big part of the audience rejected it, they were scandalized and suspicious of a woman who wanted to be independent and a free spirit and make her own life by her own rules. The movie was against patriarchy with a heroine that represents an alien female idol for the 1950s Greece and a timeless tragedy heroine. Most foreign press comments were very positive for the movie and the female liberation aspect emphasized in the film. Set 6 years after the end of the Greek Civil war (1945-1949), some were lukewarm about the rembetiko music as well, even people with progressive views.
Stella was originally intended to be a stage play with the title Stella with the Red Gloves, but it was never staged. It has been claimed that this story was the perfect vehicle for the thirty-five-year-old Mercouri's film debut. Indeed, it was the hit that Melina Mercouri needed. The film is now considered one of the greatest Greek films.
At the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, where the film was screened, Melina Mercouri met Jules Dassin, her future husband, mentor, and director. He helped her to secure major roles in such films as Topkapi, Never on Sunday, Phaedra, and 10:30 P.M. Summer, which were major international successes.
The film a Golden Globe for the Best Foreign Film (1956) and was nominated for the Palme d'Or in the Cannes Film Festival (1955) and for an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
63 years later, Melina’s Mercouri performance is 100% feminist: still relevant, to remind us of a woman that is free, untamed and proud, away from stereotypes and ‘mainstream’ female images. Stella never hesitated to express the wishes that represented the will of many women of that era – and sadly, they were never able to confess it.
Other notable performances of the song (of course female singers)
