i'm reading the inaturalist fig guy's deranged forum posts bc i guess my body decided that 5 hours is enough sleep for me and i won't be getting any more. and i am just absolutely floored by the really fundamental misunderstanding of how a number of things work, such as

the popularity, profitability, and desirability of various fields of study within the sciences

scientific research in general

human hobbies and interests

how hobbyist internet communities work

he got mad because not enough people care about figs, his favourite kind of plants, and he thinks we should be using donations to the website inaturalist to signal to experts which organisms they should invest their time and attention in. on the website inaturalist, which is a valuable source of citizen science, but which the majority of people use for fun, and out of personal interest in a specific topic.

are the donations going to be used to pay the experts, or are the experts just going to look at the number of donations the organism got and go "ooh, that seems much more sexy and important than whatever dumb shit i was working on before, if so many people are willing to spend money to say they care about it". seems like the latter is what he genuinely thinks will happen. on the website inaturalist, which people use for fun.

allowing people to vote for organisms they think are important is apparently tyranny of the majority, and will just result in stupid boring popular organisms getting more attention. whereas allowing people to pay to demonstrate which organisms they think are important is the far more equitable tyranny of the minority, and will result in more cool and worthy organisms such as fig trees getting more attention, because ???

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the more popular, beloved, and charismatic organisms would still be more popular and beloved, even if people had to pay to express their preference.

i think this guy genuinely thinks that because he likes figs and has money and would pay money to get more people to pay attention to figs, that means his suggested system is better, and figs would naturally come out on top and get the expert attention they so clearly deserve

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
