âI want to make out in the Batmobile,â Bernard says, giving Tim something thatâs clearly supposed to be a lascivious grin, but it keeps dropping off his face as he tries not to laugh, which he knows Tim is a sucker for anyway, so how exactly is Tim supposed to say no?
âWeâre not supposed to make out in the Batmobile,â Tim tells him, because itâs one thing to invite him down to see the cave, but heâs not supposed to be touching anything. Not until he gets the safety powerpoint and then close to forty-five minutes of hands-on testing, assuming he does it right the first time.
âIs that an official rule?â Bernard says. He says it like itâs an innuendo, and Tim is too busy trying to figure out where the double entendre is to actually pay attention to the question, and so, to his chagrin, he answers it truthfully in reflex.
âTechnically, no,â Tim says, because Batmanâs never put it quite exactly that way â except to Selena a few times, but it wasnât like he stated it as a rule for everyone â but there is an official rule that the Batmobile is for Batwork. And one that people shouldnât be inside it unless they strictly have to be, not even Tim, and Timâs had a whole training simulation forced on him before he even took driverâs ed the first time. (Dick says he invented it, which would make him lucky, because that means he didnât have to sit through it.)
âNo rule, no problem,â Bernard says, as if heâs ever thought when there was a rule there was a problem, and pulls them inside without even checking if thereâs anything in there, and for half a second Timâs convinced theyâre going to end up traveling back in time or astral projecting or split into evil clones, but the backseat is empty of everything but a few candy wrappers on the floor. (Someoneâs going to be in trouble over that.)
âRight, weâre not breaking any rules,â Tim manages to say, mostly to reassure himself, which heâs not sure why he bothers doing, because he knows there are rules, if unspoken. But the thing is that Bernard is nibbling at his neck lying full on top of him, actually resting his weight on Tim the way he does when heâs getting into it enough not to be self-conscious anymore, and Tim has more important things to worry about, like where to put his hands and how tight his pants are. They shouldâve done this while he was in the suit. No, scratch that, no. Bernardâs made enough comments that he knows how weird that would be.
Bernard sits up, resting his weight on Timâs knees, now, which is a lot less pleasant, and says, âwait, should there be rules? Like, how often does this happen?â which is not something Tim wanted to think about, or any of them probably want to think about, and may very well be the reason there isnât an explicit rule. Bernard starts laughing. âIf I reach between the seats am I going to find a condom stashed in here or something?â
Tim shoves him back out the still open door and says, âokay, tour over,â trying to lead him upstairs, but Bernard is rooting around in the backseat, desperate to find something. Tim could tell him how thoroughly Alfred cleans the car, and how often, but heâs humming to himself, trying to find evidence of Tim doesnât know what. All heâs found is a melted candy bar, and sunglasses that are so eye searing they must belong to Cass, which Bernard of course dons immediately, and probably doesnât plan on taking off. Tim sighs. âIâm not making out with you while you wear those.â
âAh, youâre not going to make out with me anyway now that Iâve put that thought in your head,â which shows what he knows, because Tim was definitely about to drag them somewhere a little more private than the Batmobile. Maybe run them a bubble bath. Maybe dig out the fuzzy handcuffs. Presumably not both. âHow many times do you think Batmanâs walked in on someone in the backseat here?"
"Oh my god, Bernard, no," Tim says, and then, in a flash of brilliance, adds, âactually, this oneâs a new model, after the last one got blown up, so probably no one!â Itâs actually rebuilt from an old frame â itâs expensive to just trash a frame like that â but none of the parts that would actually worry Tim are there anymore, so it probably doesnât count, right? Not that, of course, Batman doesnât regularly sanitize the whole thing. People bleed out in there often enough that itâs a regular occurrence. Unlike, presumably, sex.
âSo,â Bernard says, tilting his head and pulling Tim close again, whispering against his lips in a way thatâs really at odds with what heâs saying, given that heâs trying to get Tim back in the car even though thatâs literally where Tim works, so he doesnât know why heâs falling for it, âwhat youâre saying is we need to break it in?â And then Bernard is crashing backward, pulling Tim with him, and somehow the door ends up closed this time.

Alright. Let's break down this "oh" of an ending. NEGATIVE NANCY, COMING THROUGH
Spoilers, ho!
Ending a story is hard, if they're long or short. Whether you wrap up key threads or leave them open, you want some kind of takeaway that puts a period on things. Even in comics, where we know these characters will go on and on, ideally a story will end in a way that just... fits. Even amateur fic writers have loads of WIPs just sitting there because exactly how to end this damn thing eludes them.
I don't know if Rosenberg had an ending in mind when he started The Man Who Stopped Laughing. I don't know if he decided he'd figure it out by the end of it's year-long run. I don't know if DC Editorial lets people do that; it sounds insane, but if you've been paying attention to their current level of editorial "oversight," which I imagine is supposed to make concurrent titles mesh together reasonably well, I wouldn't be shocked if they let people wing it. Or, more likely, perhaps DC Editorial swooped in and made Rosenberg change the ending he had planned and that's why the result falls flat.
In any case, after 11 issues of enjoying myself, I'm left feeling deflated.
But let's start where #12 does, with the Joker who's been told he's John Keyser, a toxin'd henchmen that the real Joker made into a doppelganger for funsies. He approaches a hotdog vendor.
I'm stuck on "Hello. I've been looking for you"?? I didn't catch that on my first read. Joker has a favorite hotdog vendor? lol
Shut up, Waffles!! All we have is your word for it!!
In any case, hey, Keyser Joker has already been Jokering this long, so yeah, why not keep going? And why not with help from poor woobie Jason, fresh from nearly getting himself killed in Gotham War?
Bruce did not fix Jason at the end of Gotham War, so his adrenaline is still triggering fear in his brain. But Keyser Joker has a solution for that!
It's a tiny dose of Joker toxin to take the edge off of Bruce's programming. Joker makes a point of saying that the effects are only temporary, though. (And like, I assume this is just the quick-fix solution Rosenberg came up with to pull off his own ending when told Bruce's plans for Jason over in the other titles.) Jason is skeptical of this "help," naturally, but Keyser Joker brings up their matching interest: getting rid of the other Joker.
Jason, why you gotta ruin Albert's good time? đ
Cut to Red Hood dragging a clown henchman through the streets of Gotham.
But "his" face being blacked out and some of the dialogue clue the reader in: things aren't what they seem.
DERAIL TIME: what is up with this batmobile?
Like from some other angles, it looks sportier, but in most of the panels it looks like an old Buick? lol ANYWAY.
With the flaily way this person jumps off the bike and runs, I was sure that this was Keyser Joker and we might see Batman interact with him. Alas.
It's Ravager, who survived last issue's explosion. She's helping Jason 1) distract Batman and 2) get Albert out of harm's way, far from Keyser Joker's plan.
Naturally Keyser Joker is planning something more destructive than he's led Jason to believe. Also likeâŚ
The idea that Keyser Joker really is this John guy, not the real deal, is still not sitting fucking right with me. Seeing him here in another costume, with a goofy death train with mismatched eyes just like his, it feels like a signal that he actually is Joker and Waffles is either lying or mistaken somehow. Like compared to the other Joker, who we haven't seen in a costume? Who left Gotham for weird reasons? I really thought there was going to be a reverse reveal.
And since it doesn't come, I guess it's a good time to mention that! There is no reverse reveal of who the real Joker is. Things get a little muddy later, butâŚ. hrm. HRM.
That said, the other Joker does something pretty dang Jokery: he shows up in a dirigible with his face on it.
Killer Moth and a bunch of clown goons (that aren't supposed to be available because of Gotham War but WHATEVER) attach the dirigible to the train and it's pretty chaotic!
I love when villains are like, "Look I may kill people, but an endangered gorilla?! Get outta here!" đ
Jason also arrives in style.
I guess he was observing Ravager's distraction?? Which feels like it defeats part of the purpose of having her do the distraction. But then he couldn't have this cool entrance in which he bludgeons people with a motorcycle. Trade offs!
Meanwhile, Real Joker makes it to the front of the train to confront Keyser Joker. One of Real's goons offers to shoot Keyser, but Real Joker wants to make this personal and kills the poor hench so he can do it himself.
Jason coming in like YEEEEEAAAAHHHHH đ
Then he gets the bad news.
Keyser is as casually suicidal as your average Joker! Also "Real" Joker never acknowledges Red Hood's identity, afaik. It's always Keyser Joker. Details like this got me thinking that reverse reveal was coming, AND YET.
That aside, next comes a fun comedy beat.
Real Joker going right for the hair!
Jason isn't going to let this be the end of it, of course, and once again Killer Moth must suffer at his hands.
Jason shoots so many clowns. Just never the one he wants. đ
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaait wait wait. You're telling me that Bruce knew about the imminent TWO JOKERS situation. But he decided to prioritize a report of Red Hood dragging a clown through the streets. When in the same breath he's saying there are other people coming to the scene with him, so he obviously could've sent someone else? On the same day Batman #139 is like "oooh Bruce is totally onto Joker now"? This is what you're telling me?? Augh.
Well, we can't rely on Batman right now, clearly, so it's up to Jason.
Meanwhile, Keyser Joker has told the other one that he actually does have a secret way off the runaway train safely. After they fight some more, the tune starts to change.
Alright so, this "deal," which would sort of start them back at square one, doesn't bother me because obviously it's on shaky-ass ground and one of them is definitely killing the other before this issue is over. What does bug me is the "franchising" line, for two reasons:
1) Is this supposed to imply that Real Joker is the one who was behind Joker Incorporated in the Batman Incorporated issues, not a third one?
2) I was just SO SURE it was another indication we were getting a reverse reveal. Joker absolutely does not love the franchising idea. That's kind of been the point of this whole series. The genuine Joker in Keyser Joker's hallucination/memory said that having two Jokers around is stupid. HRRRRMMM.
Anyhow, they leave the train together, though the escape plan is literally just jumping off, which has more issues than they bargained for.
So do you think, assuming the Gotham War writers actually communicated at least a little, that Zdarsky asked Rosenberg what he needed Jason for at the end of TMWSL, and Rosenberg was like, "oh I need him to heroically crash a toxic blimp and almost die?" And then Zdarsky was like, "er, I need him to heroically fly a plane into a magic meteor and almost die?" And then they just shrugged and closed the Zoom?
But yeah, the blimp crashes, and I'm sort of confused because I thought that earlier Bruce was saying that even if the toxin gets into the water, it'll still make it's way to the city. So for one thing, it's still exploding in the air and it's still gonna drift. And the parts that dissolve in water are still gonna drift. There's a part to the equation missing here.
But these two are just thrilled at the excitement.
Until the sudden yet inevitable betrayal.
BUT WHO WAS JOKE
Shortly after this, Ravager shows up with Manhunter, who also survived last issue's explosion. (It just doesn't come up at all. Like it doesn't have to, I guess, but it's just weird that there's not a word or wound about it.) Ravager dives into the water looking for Jason, because she instinctually knows he did something grand and dumb. She finds him among the clown bodies and brings him to shore.
Nothing can kill this man! He came back from the dead with nine lives! And also maybe that Lazarus resin from TFZ is still helping, I dunno.
Elsewhere along the shore, what's left of both Jokers' crews find themselves waiting in the same spot for the Joker they expect to be triumphant.
You know what. I'm soured on Waffles now. Leave him.
And then, from the waterâŚ
And that's it. That's how it ends. With a sort of snide cop-out?
Like, it's Joker's POV, so yeah, you could say the dickish tone is just him. But following this story for a year, and then seeing it end with simply the old "you'll never know which Joker prevailed," it doesn't feel clever or whatever this is going for. It just feels obnoxious.
Honestly, it feels like the same takeaway as freaking Three Jokers. đ That it doesn't matter who Joker is. All the lead-up to this, where maybe we get a tiny bit of depth and development, even if just in this story, eh. Doesn't matter! We're ending this with blah payoff.
On the other hand, the part of about about there being more questions, about this ending not being tidy, makes me think that this is leaving open the possibility that Keyser Joker actually was the real one. After all, we don't get a flashback to the actual events. The events we see are part of a hallucination, and Keyser never said he had clear memories of being the real or the fake one. He just went from assuming he was the real one to taking Waffles' word for it that he was the henchman.
Also, Keyser Joker was always the Joker giving narration. And the narration boxes for the Final Joker at the end remain in his style. So it seems like we actually have a huge indication of which Joker prevailed-- unless we're meant to assume that if the other Joker prevailed, he merely took over the narration.
I mean, this is what we have. So if I can just choose what I want to believe, I'm going to believe both that Keyser was actually the real guy and that he won. But it puts a real sour taste in my mouth to be super engaged with a story and wanting an ending that says something about Joker's character⌠and the ending is just that one murders the other and you don't know who, neener neener. It's anticlimactic. It's a predictable direction that I thought SURELY Rosenberg wouldn't go in. It feels like a dick move.
And... what else is there to say? So ends my year of consistently buying a comic, I guess. Nothing else has really grabbed me like TMWSL did, though City of Madness looks promising. After the multiverse and Gotham War stuff, I'm not about to start picking up Zdarsky's Batman. #139 had plenty I should enjoy, but it's soured by Zdarsky deciding to bring a canonical take to the three Jokers concept for some ungodly reason.
A new three Jokers take feels extra stupid after a year of a story about two Jokers. And the second Joker in TMWSL isn't even taken into account in Zdarsky's story. Based off that #135 scene, it really looks like he's going to say that Darwin Halliday accidentally copied TKJ Joker somehow. lmao Why. Why do we have to do this. Why can't this just be one of the things that gets retconned away. I just want my murderclown to be fun.
I need to get back to my list of unread older comics. Or read One Operation Joker! I didn't think I was interested, but I think a random goofy premise is actually just what I need.

Was anyone going to tell me about alternate dimension lobotimized Joker, or was I just supposed to find that well of opportunity out by watching the episode A better world in Justice League?? Like my dudes, this is amazing batjokes real estate here. *slams Joker like the hood of the batmobile* The potential alone. The angst. Superman lobotomizing Joker to put a stop to him finally as he has done to numerous others. Batman thought that he was ready for this. That it had to be done. The voice in his head says that this should be everything he's ever dreamt of. The Joker stopped. He's not dead, either.
Surely. Surely this is what he's always hoped for.
But it isn't.
And it's far too late to return to how things were. All of the rogues gallery are lobotomized. They're calmer, and they don't cause any trouble. One can even say that Arkham is a home to them now. It's certainly nicer without all of the screaming and the mad cackling.
At first, he comes to visit him. The few doctors there treat this as his curiosity, but Batman is sceptical that the treatment worked. Surely, the Jokerâs mind is unlike any other. A part of him he doesn't dare call hope wants the Joker to be faking his mellowed behaviour, his eerie calmness. He doesn't laugh, but he does smile when he sees Batman. And there's such a tragic layer behind the looks he gives him. No. It's tragic because the Joker has been stripped of the ability to hide. What Batman sees when the Joker looks at him now is the most raw display of love the clown has ever donned. When you strip away the guns and the knives and the acid and the gas, the purple suits and the maddening laughter - this is what's left: his deepest, sincerest form of love out for Batman to see. To judge. And he can't even hide behind a joke.
Even lobotimized, even after Superman destroyed the Joker - he couldn't destroy this.
Batman sees the Joker move gently, shyly to cup his hand in his. Over the glove. Batmanâs breath hitches. He braces for impact, for when the Joker will take a knife out from his sleeve or a razor edged Joker card to slice at him with.
But it doesn't come. How could it? Those two lobotomy marks on his forehead, from where Superman's laser vision did its work, they glare.
"Batman," his smile doesn't reach his eyes, it doesn't even stretch wide enough for teeth to show. But what teeth are left to show? Have they not defanged the Joker?
Quiet and obedient are two things that don't suit the Joker. And Batman feels bile rising in his mouth. He feels anger at himself for letting this happen. But if Superman could kill Lex Luthor, surely this compromise is something Batman can accept.
"Joker, how do you feel?"
He blinks. Trying to think. "Half a brain lighter," he says and shrugs.
Batman dares to hope. But the laughter doesn't come. The Joker doesn't even wink. He yawns, exhausted, or too medicated. They're pumping him with more drugs than is necessary still. Precautions.
Batman grasps hold of the Joker by his wrist. Tighter than he intends. No flash of panic or excitement or even anger flashes across the Jokerâs face. Nothing that can let Batman know there's anyone under that hollow mask, that face.
He's killed the man under the acid bleached skin and left something neither here nor there. Is this what might happen to him if the man under the cowl is to die?
"What do you like to do?" Batman asks him, controlling the way his voice sounds. Everyone is listening. Everyone is watching.
"I don't know. No jokes, though. They say I can't tell jokes anymore. But, um, well," he looks sheepish in this light, and normally Batman would say it's a ploy. But now he knows it isn't. So the honesty in the Jokerâs expressions is worse than anything he's ever seen. "I don't really remember if I ever liked to do that. Did I ever make you laugh?" It's with childlike wonder that he looks at him now, inching closer than is allowed, but Batman can't find it in himself to push him away or to raise his voice at him. To remove him from himself and send him off to therapy or to his cell. His room. Wherever.
He won't be able to look at Superman again without seeing this.
"Yes." The admission comes at a cost.
The Jokerâs eyes crinkle with happiness. "That's good." He grasps hold of his gloves hand and squeezes it. Not to hurt him. Just to feel him. Batman will never be able to return to Arkham. He will never be able to see this man again.
But it's too late anyway. The man he wants to see was ripped through those two marks on his forehead.
"Thank you." The Joker says. He's clasping both hands over his and smiling up at him. This is not the Joker you know, this will never be the Joker you knew. Nor will it ever be the one you wanted to know, the one who willingly went through rehabilitation.
But. But. The voice in your head goes on, louder, quicker: this needed to be done. How many people would need to die at his hand for you to realise this? Be happy Superman took this difficult task from your hands. You didn't kill. You still haven't killed.
The Joker mumbles something.
"What?" Batman barks, his voice flooded with wretched pain he hopes comes across as anger.
It doesn't. Even lobotomized, the Joker can tell: "Hush now," he comforts, patting his hands and humming, "you don't have to explain anything to me. You don't owe me anything, o Justice Lord."
The bile in Batmanâs mouth is worse than any acid the Joker might have thrown at him. There is not a hint of irony in the Jokerâs voice.
He rips his hands away from the Joker and stands. He isn't shaking only because he is a master of control, and he knows everyone is watching. Everyone is always watching.
It's heartbreak, pure and simple. "You aren't coming back, are you?"
"What's there to come back to?" Batman asks, hollow in his heart, looking at a hollow man. A shell of someone he doesn't want to think about. Because if he does think about him, he'll wonder if this really needed to be done. And he can't have such thoughts. Not when everyone is watching.
The Joker nods his head. He doesn't have the capacity for anything else. "That's all right."
Where is the fanfare? The fireworks? The theatrics?
Batman cannot recognise the man in front of him. So he turns around, cape billowing behind him. He cannot look back. But unlike what was promised to Orpheus, even though Batman doesn't turn around, the Joker never returns by his side.
Diana stands next to him. She puts a hand to his shoulder to ask him something, but he slams it away and growls: "I don't need anything from you."
Her eyes harden to steel and he knows that he said too much.
So he amends it: "I need some time. To recuperate. This is... a lot to take in."
Her voice is gentle when she speaks to him: "Of course. I am here for you."
"Yes." Batman says. Anything longer and he might let something else slip in his voice that he can't allow.
It is easy to disappear in the Batcave. It is easy because the other Justice Lords are all very much happy to be in the spotlight.
Batman obsesses over the man in Arkham. He never comes back. But he knows, because it is his business to know, that he is a model patient. Even entrusted to help out run Arkham. He loves being around people. But too much excitement tires him out. To pass the time he paints or he spends time with Ivy in the garden. Harleen Quinzel sometimes visits them.
Any footage he can find of the cctv in Arkham depecting the Joker has him subdued. He has scoured so much footage without seeing him shake with laughter. At most he smiles and shrugs his shoulders.
Alfred doesn't say anything. But he makes him tea and he brings it to him more frequently, trying to help him in any way he can. It feels similar, Batman takes the tea and drinks it, to how the first cup of tea tasted like after he had come home that night.
The Justice Lords attempt to get him to leave the Batcave and help them, but Batman tells them he is busy dealing with something important.
He watches the Joker attempt to put puzzles together with Edward Nygma. It's a 12+ puzzle. They're struggling.
Harleen Quinzel brings them 5+ puzzles next time. She sits with the Joker and she tells him about her day, about her new job at a different clinic. About how she wised up. Then, mushing her head in hand: "It was either I wised up, or I became like you and Ivy. Not much of a choice."
The Joker has given up on the puzzle. He tells Harley about this butterfly he saw in the garden. He has nothing else that stood out to him. It was purple. He thinks he likes purple.
Harley scoffs. "Now that's funny."
The Joker shrugs. "Sorry."
"What for?"
He shrugs again. And he manages to look into the camera. And how many times has he looked into Arkham cameras and left messages just for Batman to decipher? Is this something he remembers. Is this something he wants to tell Batman?
"Sorry." He looks at Batman. But Batman thinks that this is the Joker telling him he has nothing to be sorry for.
Batman cuts all contact with Arkham. He does not look at cctv. He does not read any news or any reports.
Alfred still brings tea and he still doesn't say anything. What can he say?
Nothing. So Batman doesn't waste words. He instead pursues research that leads him to finding alternative realities.
Watching himself is not something Batman is interested in. It means nothing to him to see Bruce Wayne or Batman or some amalgam of different circumstances.
And he is just about to step away from the computer and put an end to this research - when he hears it.
It's loud and maniacal and freeing and mad.
It's angry and despicable and outrageous.
It's dangerous and intelligent.
It's him.
Batman stares at the Joker, clad in purple and green, holding a laughing gas bomb and aiming it at the Batman of his world, with a grin so wide it must hurt. "Batsy, just in time for the punchline!" He throws the bomb and laughs.

More gen (non-romantic) fic recs for @genuaryficrecs! Fandom: DC, batfam. Focus: Dysfunctional Batfam Type of gen relationships: parental and/or siblings This trope is kinda close to the Bad Bruce one but it's not quite the same; a Bad Bruce often is a manipulative bastard in control of everything, or just uncaring, while to qualify for this trope Bruce (or another family member) has to genuinely try and still be objectively terrible - and not just comically bad at communicating either; it usually references the several canon instances where Bruce knowingly inflicted severe physical injury to Jason, or beat his kids (or the various assassination attempts between siblings); usually also involves complex siblings dynamics. And they fucked up, and they still love each other so much but they don't really know how not to hurt each other and they're trying so very very hard and they're learning.
(⌠maybe don't read all of them in a row though, I don't think that could be good for anyone)
to the red planet Mars, by r_astra (https://archiveofourown.org/works/27613958) 6/6 Chapters, 36,912 words Not Rated, Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, the rest of the batfam
Official summary: Tim doesnât notice the Batmobile roaring into the cave until the tires squeal as it skids to a halt. He starts, splashing long-cooled coffee across his lap as he lurches upright. Bruce is practically throwing himself out of the driverâs seat. He stalks around to the back of the car and Tim stares, confused. The trunk? He calls out. âMask?â Bruce grunts a negative. Tim circles the car in time to see Bruce haul somethingâsomeone out. Theyâre big, but not quite as tall as Bruce, clad in black Kevlar and brown leather, wrists cuffed. Tim stops in his tracks when he recognizes the man. Itâs Jason Todd.
Why I love it: This is about Bruce and Jason's relationship. This is someone going hey. Look at those canon events. If you stop and think about it, that's fucked up. And I love fics that look close like that at canon. And the characters in there are Not Okay - it's a story about abuse - but it's never hopeless. Because they're trying so hard to make it right and they've fucked up a whole lot, but they (the whole family) love each other and they're trying.
Excerpt: âWeâre going to the cave.â Hood jerks his head up. âHell, no.â Bruce starts walking towards the Batmobile. âNo,â Hood repeats. âNo way. Iâm not allowed in Gotham, remember?â âHn.â Bruce keeps walking, the pressure in his head building and then easing as Hood must start following. Hood doesnât respond, but Bruce can hear him swearing under his breath in one long, continuous stream. When they reach the Batmobile, Bruce pulls out a pair of cuffs. âSeriously?â Hood sighs. He holds his wrists out anyway. Bruce slaps the cuffs on and checks to make sure they adjusted themselves correctly, then grabs Hood by the elbow and starts dragging him towards the back of the vehicle. Hood must be processing slowly, because he doesnât start fighting until they get within a yard of the trunk. Bruce wins.

An Aquarium of Nameless Things, by husborth (https://archiveofourown.org/works/18308171) 4/4 chapters, 14.120 words (has a very good second work in the series at 45k more, with a wider batfam sample; the second work is technically unfinished but stops at a satisfying place) T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson
Official summary: After a difficult case, Jason learns a few things about Bruce, and deals with them about as well as Jason deals with anything.
Why I love it: I like this interpretation of Jason and the Pit, with Jason trying really hard to keep a lid on it but also being emotionally 15 (I know nothing about emotional development I just once read the phrase "emotions too big for his body" and liked it), and swinging between actually dangerous/hurtful and siblingly petty. And them all being in over their heads and Bruce not healed yet (never healing) from Jason's death and a Dick, over-protective of Bruce, who never really knew Jason before, and the crushing weight of responsibility. They just feel so strongly.
Excerpts: âYouâre an annoying prick who didnât even eat all of my ravioli, which you stole,â Jason said into the phone. â[âŚ] Also my carpet smells like mildew, so if you want to come shampoo my carpet in apology for your whole everything, thatâd be great.â - âNo,â Dick admitted. âBut itâs my turn. Bruce almost died of an oxycontin overdose in front of me. Did you know that?â Jasonâs face turned red and hot and got tightâliar, liar, liar, pants on fire, the fire licking at his legs in just the millennium he lay there dying, sucking air through bloody lungs. A lie. A sham. Heâd been tricked, Bruce had tricked him, Bruce had made him think he cared but this was a lie, these were all lies. He would die, he would pass in a storm before him, and Jason would be left to root through the garbage, heâd beâthe dogs were barking loud and they tore his heels bloody. âNo,â Jason choked out. âI didnât.â

never be the first to believe, by ohnomydear (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17967926) 15/15 chapters, 98.132 words T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Ric Grayson
Official Summary: If Bruce 'made up' with Jason at the diner following the events at Sanctuary, the Red Hood shouldn't be reluctant to ask Bruce for permission to be in Gotham for a necessary surgery. Instead, Jason kidnaps Tim and asks him to make sure Bruce doesn't know he's in Gotham. Yeah, nothing about this sounds like they've forgiven each other.
Why I love it: That one is ostensibly about Jason and Bruce, and the aftermath of the big fight where Bruce beats Jason all to hell. But it's also (more so, imo) about each of the siblings' relationships with Jason, and with Bruce. Yay for Robins banding together against Bruce. People talking past each other, contradicting POVs, and what forgiveness means/looks like. Also this one has an amnesiac Ric, which creates fun character dynamics.
Excerpt: âHow did you get me this far?â And whose car was this? âThe truth, or would you like a face-saving lie that we can both pretend to believe?â Tim groaned and reached for the coffee. âWhich board room did I fall asleep in?â âYour office. For once. But intern Jared noticed and called the car company, which showed up in record time.â Jason gestured with one hand at the car around them. âAnd then they âtook you home.ââ âWhy not just wake me up?â Tim hissed. âAnd donât even get me started on how I donât have an intern Jared and Iâm really suspicious that he and the car company driver look astonishingly similar.â âGuilty. And as Bruce has always said, if Tim falls asleep on patrol, itâs because he made poor decisions about how much sleep he needed.â Tim gaped at him. âHeâhe doesnât say that.â âNo, he doesnât.â Jason grinned. âBut letâs say that I say it. Now, to business. Sorry I didnât get the copies of the agenda printed first, but I was busy finding a wheelchair to get you out of the building.â Tim dropped his head into his left hand, groaning. âYou realize I do have to go back there, right? And explain what that all was?â âThat doesnât sound like intern Jaredâs or Driver Ulyssesâ problem. Both of them are more concerned with finding their respective missing twin brothers â and solving the terrible murder of their mother, which took place ten sad, sad years ago.â Great. Heâd made up backstories for covers with a four second half-life. Tim took a sip of the coffee and found it passable. âThe agenda?â âYou know Iâm not allowed in Gotham.â Jasonâs voice had gone flat, as if the humor had just dropped out of it.

How Far Love Goes, by BeatriceEagle (@flybynightwing) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/31871722) 11/11 chapters, 99.549 words T, Graphic Depictions of Violence
Main Characters: the whole batfam
Official summary: Plenty of family reunions end in fighting. Not that many end in explosions. A mass Arkham breakout brings all of Bruce's children home, and with them, all the drama, secrets, and anger they've been keeping for years. Amidst rising tensions and a mysterious new threat in Gotham, the family has to work together to round up the roguesâand confront their feelings about each other.
Why I love it: A main plot peppered by tasty flashbacks (that inform our understanding of the present) of batfam interactions through twelve years, ranging from cute to heartrending. Complex relationships web that actually includes the girls too (Babs and Steph and Cass!).
Excerpts: âHow about Nightwing?â said a voice from above, and then Nightwing somersaulted from the branches of a nearby tree, landing lightly on the ground beside Cass. Batman pivoted half a degree to face him. âOracle called you too?â âOf course she did, B, there was an Arkham breakout.â âItâs handled.â Nightwing crossed his arms. âHandled like it was last time?â Batman mirrored Nightwingâs stance. âItâs handled.â âExcuse me, but I donât feel like standing by and watching you get your back broken agââ âGo back to BlĂźdhaven. They need you there.â Batman spun around and stalked away. Nightwing stared after him, his body leaning in the direction Batman had gone, like he was about to run after him. Then he slumped backward. âUnbelievable. Just unbelievable.â He turned to Cass. As always, his body language screamed awkwardness when he spoke to her. Even facing her, he angled his shoulders away, like he didnât want to be in this conversation. âIs he letting you help him?â Cass shrugged one shoulder, deciding that was better than trying to put the mess of hers, Barbaraâs, and Batmanâs stand-off into words - [flashback from Dick's Robin days] Then, for the first time since they'd begun their stakeout, movement beside him. Dick looked over. Batman's hand stretched out towards him. In his gauntleted palm, a single yellow M&M. Dick looked up. Batman's face was unchanged. But the M&M was obviously for Dick, right? He picked it up gingerly, as if it were explosive. (And given that it had come from within Batman's cape, who was to say it wasn't?) Eyes still on Batman, Dick put the candy in his mouth. Just chocolate. No explosions. Batman's hand withdrew back into his cape. A moment later it emerged with another M&M. Green this time. Dick took it and grinned.

If this Bruce doesn't adopt Tim I will! But I'm kinda scared for Tim I mean he's either gonna end up with Buce or the titans at some point, im afraid that something terrible is gonna happen his family and then titans/bruce takes him in? That boy loves batman and robin so much like even his family seeing the news knew how much it would upset him although I will say that for the brain that kid has he makes some pretty stupid decisions, hes driving around GOTHAM plastered in the bat-symbol that's not a good idea! the amount of lunatics that roam free in Gotham (and possibly have escaped from arkham) and hate the bat and hes driving around with the bat symbol on him KID be careful!
Some kind of Anti-fear toxin does seem more accurate cuz he's clearly taking something to not be afraid. Maybe it's something he found in Gotham and decided to try it and got addicted so he's using that lab place to try recreate it? and maybe he can't recreate it perfectly cuz in the crowbarring scene he seemed kinda anxious about his surroundings and he'd just taken that inhaler thing to overcome fear so I dunno?? Or maybe he went to arkham to see Crane for some reason and Crane has orchestrated the whole thing and told him about the drug but then wouldn't Crane have to know everyone's identity then? Dude I dunno I need more episodes even tho the low quality glitchyness is painful lol
There's probably an abundance of rooms to choose from at Wayne manor yet Jason takes Dicks old room and keeps the flying graysons posters up! I like to think that he does view dick as an older brother and just took his room to kind of have a connection to him and that he admires him hence the graysons posters being left up, yooo dick calling him his brother! I really want a nice family reunion with dick jason and bruce đ
Babs was too mean to bruce when she went off like I get where she's coming from but yo lady his son just died dial it down like a notch yikes but also babs being like 'i wonder how long it'll take for bruce to replace jason and dick is all 'what no the last thing bruce is gonna do is rope another kid into this mess'. Cut to scene of Bruces potential robin folder đ
but I also like that dick was trying to be considerate and compose himself for bruce but once he found out that bruce is idiot enough to pull another kid into this, that that's when he got mad and bruce so brokenly begging dick to come back and be robin đ˘đ˘đ˘
I know the show is constantly trying to push bruce out/sideline him cuz it's a titans show not a bruce wayne show and I know they're going for a different portrayal of bruce which I'm not complaining about I do like this version of bruce (more than I thought actually) and this universe but I feel like they could have gave more cracks you know, I like that they showed him trying to avoid the reality of jasons death and just not stopping not even for a second and just immediately jump into another case and that breakdown verge where he's begging dick to be robin and then when he finally I guess let's the weight of jasons loss sit on him to the point where he whacks in jokers head with a crowbar just like he killed jason (he could have killed joker so many other ways like a less violent bullet to the head but oh no brucey crowbars him to death!!)
There's a lot of character stuff that i do like but that scene where he's in the cave on his knees scrubbing his sons blood out of the suit he died in, the suit that he only ever wore because of batman. đ˘ I feel like they could have had him crack there and let out a gut wrenching scream and then just continue on doing what he was doing as if nothing happened and dick walking in on that should have had more of a reaction!? like he could have stopped in his tracks at the sight of his brothers blood all over his father and bruce screaming, dick could have like took a step back almost like he's gonna run but forces himself to stay there, because who wouldn't want to run from that and no matter how much horrible things you've dealt with before sometimes your brain does just take over against your will and makes you react, the rest of the scene just could have played out the way it did. Literally one ounce more emotion is all I wanted.
No one really emotionally cracked at jasons death. I get that it just happened and that people put walls up and denial can be such a prominent thing when a loved one dies but it couldn't have been that difficult to put in little mannerisms now and again to show that everyone is deeply hurt but holding it in. Honestly gar seemed more hurt to me than dick did. But I do like that dick reacted in detective mode and started trying to figure things out from jasons side so at least there's that.
This redhood is defo not an anti hero he has well and truly landslided into villian territory and I dunno how that's gonna be reconciled? they better not kill him off! and they better not just straight up keep redhood/jason as a full on villian! but if they do get through to jason and bring him back a little how the heck is that little man gonna deal with what he did to Hank?? I feel like they had a bond you know and for all Hanks talk about putting Jason down I really don't think that Hank would actually have killed him even if it came down to Hanks life vs Jasons I think Hank would rather die than kill Jason (but that's heavily biased cuz in my mind jason is my son and I freaking love hank sooo) but Hank to me puts on a hard front like 'yeah I'll get in your face I'll come at you b*tch' but internally he's like 'yeah I'll come at you to help you' đ
like internally he defo has a lot of soft spots though that's not to say he'd be like this for someone like the joker or scarecrow or whatever guys like that he'd be like no screw you you die or go to arkham like byeee
Nevermind how jason is gonna come back from this though HOW IN THE ACTUAL SH*T is dawn gonna come back from this!!?!!
Random side note here but imagine Jasons first time in the batcave he would be so excited and trying to mess with everything and being like ohh what's that do and pressing random buttons and bruce having a hernia trying to get jason to stop before he accidentally blows the cave up đ
also he has probably been caught several times trying to 'borrow' the batmobile, I can just picture him trying to sneak down the halls of the manor without the floor creaking and making it all the way into the cave and doing a victory dance cuz he didn't get caught and he hops on into the batmobile in his pj's and let's out a scream cuz alfred is sitting in the freakin passenger seat waiting for him and then they just hang out in the batmobile alfred had the good foresight to bring a flask of tea books and a blanket for jason
Speaking of Alfred I think it would have been more angsty and hurtful if Alfred died shortly after Jason and after a few days Jason claws his way out his grave and the first thing he sees is Alfreds headstone and that's how he finds out Alfred died : (((
This is so long girl I'm sorry I know it doesn't seem like it but I did restrain myself đ
one more thing before I go maybe this Dick is the absolute worst mf and the reason babs feels betrayed by him and is so upset with him could be that he left her (or cheated on her) with Dawn cuz of that weird flashback thingy in the other season where dick dawn was a thing I dunno I hope not though that would be ughhh
Oh crap, you right about probably something bad will happen to Tim for Bruce or Titans to take him in, I was gonna say he could just demand to be in their lives to save Bruce/Dick like in the comics but he also has kinda shitty parents normally and these people seem cool so really it could go either direction, but like itâs Titans so it doesnât look good lol. Also, I wonder if itâs gonna be Dick who is basically gonna adopt him this time since we already had a huge track record in just 2 seasons lmao. But I know right, true I like how his parents knew immediately how much the news would effect him đ I hope he goes down the making himself robin and forcing himself in Dick and Bruceâs life xD I love that route. Lmao, the kid is all book smart, very little street smart when it doesnât have to do with outsmarting someone XD
I was also rewatching and that gas he takes def has to be some anti fear toxin cause he mentions fear so many times and flash backed to his near death fall, which he felt was probably holding him and back and thus had to prove himself and adds to whatever is influencing him. But ohhh he did seem pretty dang anxious at the carnival grounds, thatâs a really interesting theory but recreating something he found hmm, I can see that.
Apparently according to a YouTube who got to see the first 5 episodes, we find out what his deal is a lot more in episode 5, so one more week hopefully
Brooo trueee, I couldnât believe jason took dickâs room and like didnât even change anything. Like Jason looks or at least use to look up to Dick SO much, like in his first episode in the first season, he went on quite a lot about how much he had always wanted to meet him and how much he looked up to him, which is probably also fueling his red hood rage, being hurt by your idol and brother like he did in S2 must have really just killed the boy. But yes omg, there freaking better be a dang family reunion scene like, after so much angst we deserve that đ
And yesss, I loved seeing how mature Dick is getting and just how much he is growing as a character, the fact he was so calm and considerate with Bruce at first really shows that compared to s1 Dick, only breaking when Bruce tried to get more kids involved. That scene by Brenton was sooo well acted omg, the way he yelled that he doesnât want to robin again, heartbreaking man. And Bruce begging like that omg
Yeah, this version of Bruce is def so different than any Bruce we have seen on screen before, like def the most emotionally constipated, and thatâs saying something xD But I like how they are taking a risk, it also helps Dickâs character more and give him more of an arc, as he seems to be taking on Bruceâs normal role with Jason and red hood. Bro, you are so right omg, like the fact Bruce could have killed the joker in any way and he does it with the dang crowbar. It really shows how broken he really was and why the man shouldnât depressing any and every damn feeling and emotion lol.
Omg, I love how you have the exact details of what you wanted to happen in that one Bruce and Dick scene đđđťđđťđđť bro if you dont already you should totally write fanfics cause that was so detailed, I love it
Yeah, I do wish someone cracked (other than Bruce lmao) a bit more, but I do think each character reacted in character though, like it is very Dick(at least this version of Dick, other versions may break down tbh) to put everything into solving the case and figuring out what was up, thatâs more this versionâs way of caring than just breaking down, like he rarely ever has broken down completely. I think dawn could have been a little more emotional about the death (tho she has enough coming for her lmao). Connor didnât know Jason that well so it makes sense he would just be sad. Gar seemed pretty sad and in character about it, maybe could have had a bit more, same with Kori, tho she showed it by being almost angry and fiercely protective of everyone else, so I think that makes sense for her. It would have been interesting to see how Rachel and Rose would have reacted though (where did rose go btw?! She would so have a reaction to Jasonâs death). But yeah, i wish there was more resolution and break downs for Jason, but also it may have just not felt real since they werenât there? But I agree
You think? Idk, I think they could def still make him an anti hero towards the end, especially if itâs crane behind the whole thing. Cause if they donât they are gonna have to go down the gosh awful overused villain gets redeemed while he dies/only to die right freaking after , and I will be so freaking livid if they do that omg. Like they better freaking not. But true, he would be broken by what he did to Hank, oh yikes. But I can see him then that leading to the anti hero path, like he would never go back to be on the titans cause he would feel too guilty, thus giving more of a reason for the anti hero life. But I know, I loved Jason and Hankâs love hate relationship đđđđ You know Hank secretly loved the kid and probably saw himself in him.
Yikes poor dawn, you right. Like I have no idea how she is gonna be now like wow.
OMG GIRL, You are on a hc angst train today!!!! That scenario of Alfred dying right after jason and Jason climbing out to see Alfredâs?! Heartbreaking!
But I canât believe they killed Alfred off so casually thođ
Omg I swear if they freaking show Dick having cheated on Babs I will be so freaking pissed omg, he better have not! Im hoping they had a more high school romance thing/grew up together then got together type of thing
And omg donât apologize I LOVED IT and reading your asks!!! I feel ya too!

PROMPT:
Bruce Wayne & Jason Todd, Jason Todd & Catherine Todd
Warning: implied/referenced child abuse.
Jason Todd makes no attempt to eat his burger or even take a sip from his soda, despite the loud rumbling of his stomach. He clutches the bag tightly, bringing it closer to his chest when he sees Bruce staring, like he's afraid Bruce would take offense and demand his food back.
Bruce Wayne does not understand him. His threadbare clothes do nothing to hide the skin stretched over bones. He can see the outline of the boy's ribs through his red hoodie. He is clearly very hungry and going by the way he can't seem to take his eyes off the bag of fast food or even how he keeps taking lungs full of the aroma wafting from it, like if he breathes deep enough, he will be filled. He would bet his entire fortune that this kid has not had a good meal in weeks, or even months. Even one as unhealthy as greasy fast food.
The child is clearly starving. Yet, he has not made any attempt to help himself.
Bruce does not have any experience with poverty or homelessness. Even at the lowest point of his life, he had access to basic human needs. Still, he knows enough about human behavior to know that Jason's behavior right now is not the norm. When he gives a clearly starving person food, they usually devour it immediately.
There are only a few reasons why he would not want to eat the food he had enthusiastically accepted from Bruce. Either he plans to use the food as payment for his safety, in which case, Bruce needs to start looking into gangs exploiting kids, or he has someone, most likely a younger sibling in his care. Considering the fact that Bruce had caught him trying to jack off the fourth tire of the batmobile, after successfully getting away with the other three, Bruce is not sure what is most likely to be the case.
"You going to turn me in now?" Jason asks him, once Bruce's burger is out of sight.
"I promised you I wouldn't," Bruce tells him as earnestly as he can manage.
It doesn't convince the child at all.
"Yeah, right," he scoffs. "That's what you all say."
"Don't you think it would be counter-productive to have you arrested for trying to survive? I'm trying to make Gotham safe for kids like you, Jason. Not put you in jail. I might take you somewhere safe, so you don't have to keep living on the streets, but--"
"I'm not on the streets," Jason cuts in defensively. The fear and worry in his expression is clear now. "I live with my mom and we're fine. If you're not going to arrest me, then I'll be on my way."
A mom. Bruce can't decide if it's a euphemism for Boss. He has seen some awful things since becoming Batman. He also knows some parents take advantage of their kids and force them into crimes as a way to 'earn their keep'.
Jason is most likely taking the food to this person, if he's not eating it, and Batman needs to separate them if the child is being exploited.
The child doesn't wait for Bruce's response before he starts his trek back to the Narrows.
Making a snap decision, Bruce calls out to him.
"Common, I'll drop you off wherever you want," he says, knowing Jason would never let Batman drop him off at home. The child is too suspicious, and rightfully so.
Jason stops in his tracks, but he makes no attempt to accept Bruce's offer.
"It will be morning before you make it all the way across town," Bruce points out. "That's if you don't get attacked for the food."
With that, Jason agrees to let Bruce give him a ride.
Even though he was quiet for the first couple of minutes, Bruce could see the wheels turning in the boy's head. Jason has a very expressive face that tells Bruce he is gearing up to say something, as he takes in the interior of the batmobile.
Jason doesn't take as long as Bruce thought he would.
"You're probably rich, huh?" Jason observes.
Oh God, Bruce hopes this kid is not about to proposition him.
"Not really." Bruce's answer is terse to discourage further probing.
"So it's true what they say?" Jason continues, either missing Bruce's reluctance to continue with this conversation or ignoring it. "That you're fucking Bruce Wayne for money?"
If Batman didn't have such a tight rein on his microexpressions, he would have choked. "That's not language suitable for a child."
Jason turns in his seat so that Bruce doesn't miss the elaborate eye-roll.
"I guess you've had to pay informants, huh?" Jason asks. "You know, like in the stories, where a dude is rewarded for giving the cops valuable information for solving a crime. You do that?"
"Sometimes." Bruce is invested in where Jason is going with his questioning. "Why? Do you have information to sell?"
"Depends on your going rate," the boy sasses.
"And how much do you want?" Bruce asks.
"I read in the papers that the FBI pay up to a hundred grand," Jason shrugs. "Shouldn't be too much for you to match, seeing as you have a rich boyfriend."
"One hundred thousand dollars?" The only reason Bruce doesn't laugh is because he doesn't want Jason to think he's being made fun of.
That, and the possibility that Jason may be trying to get free from his abuser, by having Batman go after them.
"You really think your information is worth that much?" Bruce asks.
"You tell me, Batman." Jason shrugs again. "It was worth enough to cause a war between Penguin and Scarecrow. Enough to make my dad disappear, not that that's a bad thing."
Bruce doesn't think he's supposed to hear the last part, as Jason mutters it under his breath. But the cowl picks up the words clearly.
A criminal and/or abusive mother and mob affiliated but now absentee father. Bruce is debating calling Social Services.
He's also aware of the war between Penguin and Scarecrow. A few months ago, there were rumors of a collaboration between the two factions to take over Gotham, before accusations of betrayal.
If it wasn't for the lives being lost, Bruce would be grateful for their misunderstanding.
Still, a hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money for someone like Jason, and is most likely to draw the wrong attention.
"I'll give you five thousand," Bruce tells him.
"Out of a hundred? Are you really that cheap?" Jason snorts. "You roll around in a ride like this and can't even pay for information? Okay, I'll do you a favor and take seventy."
"Ten," Bruce counters.
"All you rich assholes like taking advantage of poor people," Jason grumbles angrily. When Bruce doesn't budge, he relents. "Fifty."
"Fifteen."
"Fifty," Jason repeats firmly.
"Alright, twenty five thousand dollars and that's my final offer."
"Deal!" Jason agrees immediately.
Bruce watches him spit on his palm before extending it to Bruce for a handshake.
"Come on," he urges when Bruce makes no attempt to shake his hand. "We gotta shake on it to seal the deal."
In the face of that logical argument, Bruce spits in his own hand before clasping it to Jason's in a handshake.
If Jason believes he has information that can help, then twenty five thousand dollars is not too much to pay someone who clearly needs it. The cash in the batmobile isn't up to the amount, but it should be enough to buy the time he would need to get the rest from the manor.
"Alright." He follows Jason's directions on where to park. "What's this information?"
"Wait here," Jason instructs him, undoing the seat belt. "I'll bring it to you."
Bruce gives Jason a minute head-start before he takes to the rooftops, to trail the young boy.
After a few twists and turns, he comes to a stop in front of a dilapidated building. A woman rushes out and pulls Jason into a hug.
"I've been looking all over for you!" she scolds. "Where were you? Chris said some man took you. Is that true?"
She is rail thin, her threadbare clothes hanging off her body, but she sounds genuinely distressed as she checks him for injuries.
"I'm fine, Mom," Jason says in comfort before shoving the food at her. "Look, I got us food and I found a way to get away from the men looking for dad."
The woman -- Jason's mom -- shoves the food back at him, before pulling him into an apartment with the door barely hanging on a hinge.
It's hard not to notice the woman's limp, or the way Jason supports some of her weight as they go.
Bruce takes a second to process everything.
Judging by the environment and what he's seen and heard, Jason isn't being abused, but he's in even more danger.
Whether he plans to pay off his father's debt with the money or not, Bruce knows he has to get mother and son away from this place before they end up as victims of mob violence. Whether Jason really does have information to sell or not.
With that, Bruce hops down to the street from his perch on the roof.
Despite how mindful he is of the door, the moment his fist to connects with the door, it falls off the hinge holding it in place, exposing Jason and his mother having either a very late dinner or a very early breakfast in their one bedroom apartment.
They both jump at the sight of him, and once realization dawns on them, their reactions are wildly different.
Jason's mom cowers with fear, shrinking into herself while attempting to wrap herself around her son, but Jason won't have it. He is livid.
"What the fuck, Batman!" the child hisses angrily. "I told you to wait for me."
"Jason, stop," his mother pleads, pulling Jason behind her.
The boy is unmoved. His mother's frailness is no match for his strength.
"You broke our door! Why the fuck would you do that?"
Despite his obvious anger, they're both careful not to raise their voices. Bruce imagines that getting a visit from Batman isn't a good thing in this neighborhood.
"Calm down," Bruce growls.
Both mother and son freeze where they stand.
"We didn't do nothing wrong, Batman," the lady tells him in a trembling voice. "If you're looking for my husband, we don't know where he is."
"I'm here for Jason," Bruce tells her, registering her distress just before he turns to Jason. "You were taking too long," he lies. "I wanted to make sure you were fine."
This seems to placate the boy a bit, but not his mother, who demands to know what the hell is going on.
Bruce watches silently as Jason explains his plans to his mother.
Apparently, his plan is to sell the information his father stole from Scarecrow to Batman, in exchange for money that will get them out of Crime Alley.
His mom doesn't look thrilled, but she lets Jason climb into the ceiling to retrieve what her husband had hidden there.
"You won't arrest him when you have what you want, will you?" she asks with a fierce look.
Bruce can't help but admire that about her. Not a lot of people have that look about them when Batman is staring them down.
Must be where Jason gets his spunk.
"Jason is a good boy," she continues. "He did a bad thing, but it was for a good reason. His heart is in the right place, I swear."
"Mrs Todd--" Bruce starts, but she interrupts him.
"Catherine."
"Catherine," he repeats. "I don't plan to arrest your son," he continues as calmly as Batman's voice will let him. "We made a deal and I intend to uphold my end."
"So you're just going to hand Jason twenty-five grand?" Catherine asks suspiciously. "Just like that?"
"Yes," he tells her simply. "But I don't have twenty-five thousand dollars in cash right now. I can give you a thousand tonight, and a safe place for the night. Seeing as I broke your door. Tomorrow, you will get the rest of the money and I will call someone to fix your door."
As he talks, he pulls out the bills from his utility belt and hands it to her.
Of course, he has no plans of letting them return here. But if he has learned anything from being Batman, it's that, sometimes, all some people have left is their pride.
Poor people hate being treated as charity.
Siccing Alfred on her would be more productive. All he has to do is make sure they meet. Dick would probably appreciate having someone young in the manor, too.
"And you swear Jason will be safe?" Catherine stresses, eyes flickering between the money and Bruce's face.
"I swear," he vows solemnly. That much, he can promise.
A few minutes later, Jason returns from the ceiling, an envelope clutched in his hand.
"Jason," Catherine calls softly, pulling him into her arms before he can give Bruce the envelope. "Baby, there's something I have to tell you aboutâŚ"

I realized I didn't comment on the new headers. They look super cool bestie, I love them. Now, I sit here, with my half glass of orange juice (I ran outâsue me) and Day 19 of the Depp v. Heard trial playing in the background, ready to write for chapter 28!
He had known they shouldnât have trusted that girl Lena, theyâ
See! Bruce didn't trust her either! Like I said, if distrusting Lena is the Titantic, I'm the string quartet.
It's not that I think she lied, but I think she was involved, at least to some degree, against her will. So I distrust her that way. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, she just wants to protect her kid, so she had to do what they told her to do. I trust that she is a good person forced to do bad things. That's all.
Bruce screamed against the bonds of his own body. Thrashed. But his body didnât move. He barely breathed. Barely blinked.Â
This is where my drama degree comes in because I'm about to geek out a little bit.
Could you imagine if this was shot? R. Patz, dressed in dark-mid grey sweats and a black sweater with holes punched through it, in an empty, dirty white room, screaming, hitting the walls, and thrashing around with a bunch of jump cuts? And then it zooms out to make it seems like that's going on inside Batman's eye so we can see Batman standing completely still?
Or, you know what, that would make sense stand alone, but we'd have to show the empty syringe so... NEW PROPOSAL! We stay with Batman, watch him pull out the empty syringe, cut back to his face, with his widening eyes, zoom into his eyes, see the aforementioned RPatz freak out, and then clean cut to Batman's stoic face.
I, personally, would die in the theatre. They would have to carry my dead body out of the cinema with all the other trash.
âShe punched the mayor,â Alfred said softly, a hint of awe in his voice. [...] Reader's pov She punched the mayor,â Alfred said softly.
I just found it interesting to see that Bruce noted the awe Alfred had in his voice and the reader did not, merely saying Alfred said the phrase softly. It does two things: one, Bruce is so in love with the reader that he hears awe in Alfred's voice and it's totally plausible that he was just projecting his own awe at the reader; and, two, the reader feels less-assured about herself to the point that she doesn't even note the awe Alfred may or may not have. Well done, Shelbs can I call you shelbs?
Before that, evenâshe should have run him over with the Batmobile until he was nothing but a smear on the tires.Â
What a nice gruesome thought.
Again, it's so interesting to see both Bruce and the reader thinking about killing people in the same chapter even though we know they wouldn't kill anyone unless they absolutely had to. To reiterate what we know, they do things out of love, so they don't want to snuff out the chance of redemption unless they're really given no other choice.
âYou were so drunk you passed out. All I had to do was mess my hair up a little and tell you how amazing you were. And you believed it. As if a dick that small could ever make a girl come.â
I love the bravery. It's stupid, but, like, yeah, you might as well insult him while he's waiting to kill you. What do you have to lose? jk
âMight as well tell me what youâre planning,â she said. âOr rather, what Mr. Mayor here has planned. Sorry, James, I just donât think youâre smart enough to come up with any kind of evil plan. A small dick and a small brain.âÂ
This is exactly how I plan to act in the event anything ever happens to me. Annoy the motherfucking shit out of them and insult them until they cry. If you're gonna die, you might as well enjoy it.
One of them caught her by the silk wrap she still had. She whirled and used the momentum to wrap the cloth around the manâs hands.
Yes!! I knew that silk wrap was gonna come in handy!
âItâs okay, I know you canât help it. Itâs okay, youâre okay.âÂ
My heart is soft. You just know Bruce is watching her say that while his body is killing her against his will. Again, I just want to shoot it. RPatz watching him kill the reader from inside his own mind, unable to do anything about it.
Y/n let Maxwellâs blood coat her hands. She pressed herself against him. Whirled so he was a shield between her and Bruce. She pulled the knife out. Stabbed him again. Twisted. Yanked the blade out again. Stabbed him a third time. She stared into his eyes as his blood poured over her. âI promised I would kill you,â she whispered to him.Â
Hm.
Interesting.
I mean I see that she did need to kill him. It was him or Bruce, so...
But promising to kill someone and actually killing someone are two very different things. I wonder what psychological consequences there'll be.
The door burst open. Alfred was there with a shotgun. He was limping, one leg bloodied with his tie used as a makeshift bandage. He shot one of the security guards with no hesitation. There was a cut on his chin. There were men behind him, trying to stop him. Murphy and the two guards within the room drew guns.Â
I really appreciate how Alfred and the reader are both willing to kill for Bruce (and have). It's a nice contrast against Bruce, who tries so hard not to kill people.
The way I see it, it's almost like, despite Bruce being Batman, he's the one out of the three of them that needs the most protecting. It makes sense. So much has happened to him and, like I mentioned, he's been pretty frozen in time since his parents died. So out of the three of them, he'd be the one with the most naivete, optimism, and belief in redemption.
All in all, great chapter!! Onto 29!

AND YES, Adam Sandler spoke at my school and SHOOK MY HAND
And his family sat behind me the entire time. WITH MARTIN SCORSESE
Thanks bestie I love the headers too đĽşđĽ°
Love the Titanic analogy with Lena. Truly, I love it đ I wanted to make her untrustworthy but then I needed her for the sequel for hot second, then I wanted the reader to have a friend who doesn't get shot in front of her so....sorry. Lena's cool for now.
Okay but imagining this playing out in the theater is so cool. You're exactly right--it'd be like Rob as Bruce in a tiny little room freaking out and beating his fists on the walls etc and then it'd zoom out of his eye to show Batman's stoic face. That's almost exactly what I imagine for both him and the reader when writing them being drugged!
Side note here but my family always (affectionately) tells me that if I ever got kidnapped the kidnappers would give me back for free because I'd get on their nerves too much. So obviously that's my plan too. Just annoy the shit out of them, make them cry, etc đ
I think the reader brings up her promise to kill Maxwell as like a last ditch effort to convince herself it's okay. He deserves it, he's a piece of shit, she's saving Bruce.
Love what you said about Bruce needing the most protection and you're totally right. He's still that traumatized little kid! I know Alfred definitely recognizes this, because Alfred goes into protective dad mode with Bruce a lot.
Also HOW COOL ADAM SANDLER SHOOK YOUR HAND! Love that for you bestie!!! Still can't figure out how to find your name/ info tumblr because I'm dumb but I somehow pulled up a livestream of the salute & I'm pretty sure I saw you in your sparkly mask đ
