Hey yall, I will be taking a small tumblr hiatus, but before I officially remove my app, I think it's important for all the caregivers and their people out in the world to hear this,

I am an extremely private person (in my private life), but lately, it's been one thing after another. As of late, most all of the women in my life have needed some sort of medical attention. From assisted living facilities because of dementia to surgeries, mamograms, biopsies, and everything in between. I am always the go-to person when someone needs a rock, but lately, it's been more than I can handle.

Please, please, make sure you (as the caregivers) are also taking care of yourselves and your mental health. It's more important than you know. It's hard to be someone's rock when you are crumbling yourself.

so I had my first mamogram yesterday, and honestly, it wasn't the torture that everyone always makes it out to be. Awkward, mildly uncomfortable, and the awkward part was the 'hold this position, don't breathe, but also try to relax' so really it was no biggy. Really I was just thinking how much more difficult it must be for those with smaller breasts, 'cause like, I've got a decent amount, but how hard it must be to get enough boob in for a b or a cup... oof!

But they called me back, to have more taken, and an ultrasound and breast cancer runs in the family and now I'm anxious af. so in a week I'll get to go have more imaging done. I'm sure it is fine. Everything is fine. But I also really kind of want to cry.

Thing is, AI can be many many different things but people just call it all "AI". Like you have Language Models like ChatGTP, you have image generation AI (both of which are a bit skeezy in terms of plagiarism and environmental impact) but you also have patter recognition AI which can detect breast cancer months earlier than a human looking at the same mamograms.

When people talk about AI they really need to be more specific because it can mean any number of things and some of them are totally useless while other have genuine potential to save many lives

Gonna be real I don’t think it’s possible to take a hard line stance on ai rn. Obviously I’ve seen it mostly be used for bad but I think it’s very silly to fully condemn or fully condone something like that.

I just had a co-worker ask me if trans masc people pre-top surgery still get mammograms because she's concerned that her trans friends are neglecting their health to not aggravate their dysphoria. While it was a bit invasive, I'm glad that she cares enough to ask and that she felt comfortable asking me.

Also afab friends, go get your pecs poked at and your downstairs mix-up an annual check up if you're of age. Your health can impact you the rest of your life, your dysphoria is temporary.

Nick called. He had cancer.

Yesterday I came home from having blood work done at my doctor and my mom was puttering around the kitchen and said that two calls came in while I was gone. One was irrelevant.

The other:

“Image Care called and they want me to come in tomorrow to have an ultrasound of a spot on my right breast.”

Dear readers. There was suddenly a cold feeling in my stomach.

I drove her here. She put on her masks and went in. Silent. Scared.

And I am left here with you.
