Marmalade (2024)

Recently incarcerated, Baron strikes up a friendship with his new cellmate, a man with a history of prison breaks. As they hatch a plan to escape, Baron recalls how he met the love of his life and how they came up with a scheme to rob a bank.

JayBell: Yes, the hair and the accent is an assault on your senses, but I think Anzie is much more sensitive to those types of things in movies than me. Okay maybe not the hair, that was tough.

Weirdly, in the beginning the movie felt very Forrest Gump-esque with the accent, the naive male protagonist, and the storytelling narration.

The whole time you're thinking, how could a guy be this stupid and gullible? It's like watching a car crash in slow motion.

I'm a bit conflicted because I do think the twists in the movie are fun and pretty well done. I do think it makes the beginning worth it. But I also have some gripes.

One, the dancing scene in the parking lot is kind of weird and pointless. I didn't get what message it was sending or what it added to the plot.

And two, they start off with these funny little visual gags in the story as Joe Keery's character starts his story, but then they give it up shortly after. So either stick with it or never do it at all.

And lastly, some of the side characters weren't as well written or well acted as the main characters. For example, the various cops aside from the main one. And maybe I would have enjoyed a bit more relationship building between our two prisoners.

But overall, I've seen worse. Like Joe Keery's hair. I don't understand how one guy could look so different with a few different hairstyles.

Anzie: I don’t really know what possessed me to want to watch this. And honestly it had to be seeing Joe Keery with THAT hair and hearing THAT accent and that it was going to be a fun little bank robbery movie bc his mama is sick and alll that. Can I say for at least 75% of this movie I felt pure pain in every organ of my body. And that accent and that hairrrrr. I was so concerned and angry I never wanted to be allowed to make another decision for the rest of my life.

And you know what? Marmalade she gave unhinged killer vibes from the start. And I hateddd her. And I feel like the performance was a criminal minds knock off of Blake Lively in Elvis and Anabelle (which I lovedddd) - and I knew she’d kill his “mom?” And then she’s pregnant after like 3 days?? Hoooww could Baron be that dumb. Wellllll that’s the whole thing - and honestly I’m kinda conflicted bc the literalllllll last 15 minutes are nearly worth the pain? I mean we alllll got got and it’s soooo good on how it turns out and his nickname. pUppETttttt. Gawd. I don’t know I’m kinda mad but not?? We’ve seen way worse and it’s Joe Keery soo I feel like transgressions can be forgiven. Except if I think about his ploy toooo much my head hurts???

From what can be seen in the movie, I definitely perceive Goldi as someone who doesn't have much sense of belonging as an orphan and in a family of literal bears and actively searching for a connection with someone she can highly relate with. She's seemed to yearn for normalcy for years and part of me thinks a small part of her is insecure, comparing her life to the stories of what "just right" or "happily ever after" seems to be.

As the perfectionist I interpret her as, it would be reasonable for her to reach out to these conventional standards for families as the right way to do things– in the process ignoring what she had right in front of her. Despite the amount of conventional social norms in fantasy she breaks just being herself, I assumed she clinged onto the family ideal as a way of coping as an orphaned child.

Dreaming of the perfect family, and this feeling of everything being just right all the time…when in reality families aren't truly like at all. I think that's what she learned in the film's ending. But anyways enough analysis of Goldi and her behaviors– onto the headcanons!

- She refuses to let anyone touch her hair but herself and sometimes Mama Bear due to trust issues.

- Continuing on the topic of hair, with the amount of curls on her head it knots up easily. Every night she has to brush out curls that are tangled together.

- She styles her hair primarily out of convenience because her hair gets too wild when it's down and makes it hard to see or do things (part of me thinks her current hairdo is a product of her having too much hair to put into two buns and improvising)

- Very acrobatic as can be seen in the scene of her climbing on the bears

- Many kids were scared of Goldi when she was younger because she tended to get into fights and played rough (always been a biter)

- Goldi just seems like a picky eater to me, very particular about what she eats

- With her need for things to be "just right", Goldi is a definite perfectionist when it comes to many things as I've mentioned above in my analysis

- She has a habit of not asking for help when it's needed (Probably due to her having to become pretty independent from a young age)

- I believe she already had a bit of a criminal record and was a street urchin before meeting the bears, so I bet she's a pro at pickpocketing by now

- Smells like grass and honey with a hint of bear, which is surprisingly comforting

- Has a habit of correcting people when they speak about her interests (totally not projecting )

- Likes messiness but in an organized way if that makes sense-

- A very stubborn person!!!!

- Goldi loves fantasy stories, has a stash of them in her room (her taste changed a bit as she got older though so while I believe she's still a sucker for fairytales, she also likes a good novel on pirate adventures at the moment)

- When playing games she can be both a sore loser and winner 💀

- Let's be honest, Goldi is competitive...to a really high degree. She can make anything into a competition-

- Concerningly good hearing, the type of person who'll hear you whisper something across the room

- Secretly pretty good at drawing, but Goldi never talks about it because she never thinks her drawings are good enough to her ridiculous standards

- idk why but I feel like she'd really like sea shanties and idk why (pirate obsessed goldi???)

- Really protective of the bears, especially Baby– just those older sister instincts ifykyk

- Why do I feel like she'd just be a big fan of apple flavored stuff-

- I get sapphic vibes from her idc what anyone says! (I'm writing gn reader for her but still >:D)

- Along with that I feel like if Goldi truly found someone she thought of as cool she'd try to play it cool but stumble over her words the second they compliment her (gay panic for the winnn)

- Seems like the type to unknowingly ramble about stuff she's passionate about (those people>>>>>)

- Tries her best to hide vulnerability as she's someone who sorta views vulnerability as weakness when it comes to herself

- From their interactions, it's safe to say Goldi's closest to Mama Bear

- Part of me thinks Goldi tried for years to imitate the bears when she was younger, trying to be one of them so they could be somewhat of a "real family"' (But when it wasn't working out the way she hoped, Goldi just began wishing for a human family– maybe even her biological parents)

- Very well read, and knows alot of fun facts despite keeping it to herself

- She's really good at climbing trees and hunting, looking at where the bears live it's safe to assume they live off the land around them

- Never has her hair down around other people (it's embarrassing in her as bc it's so messy)

- A horrible singer but knows it, and loves to sing because of how much it annoys others around her (finds it funny)

- That walking stick she has, I think it may have been a gift from Papa Bear (he just has the vibe of someone who widdles/carves things idk why)

- Goldi definitely tried archery before (kinda gives me Merida from Brave vibes so...yeah)

- Stronger than she looks, I don't care what you say Goldi has some muscle to her

- Forgets her own strength occasionally and accidentally broke a few things because of it

- I feel like she makes her own clothes, they just seem handmade

- Very random, but Goldi does parkour, urban climbing, or both

- Goldi's favorite color is definitely always changing around, one day it's orange and then another day it's purple– just seems like the type of gal to appreciate vibrant colors

- Definitely has loads of random shiny trinkets she's stolen in a box

- As an older sister, I definitely know that Goldi and the family are the only ones allowed to insult Baby, as that's how they show love- if anyone else did it they're asking for a fight

- She's not touchy in a conventional way, instead opting to playful wrestling and things of the such to show physical affection at first (lowkey a softie for hugs in secret tho)

- Not the best at opening herself up, Goldi always seems to be a bit guarded so it definitely takes her quite a while to warm up to people

- Winter is her least favorite season because that's hibernation time, aka the time where she feels the most alone

- Because despite how much of a front she puts up sometimes, she loves her family with her entire heart and is highly affected by the sudden quietness that fills their home

how inconvenient is it for one of the housewardens to accidentally burst into a “heart song”(or Disney style song) during their meeting after maybe one of the other housewardens are getting on their nerves(maybe Kalim just starts randomly does that when he’s extremely in a good mood or has an idea on what kind of fun activity they could all do later)(Crowley has to suck it up if the housewardens do get lots of extreme emotions held up and are nearly bubbling to the surface cause of each other, if this happens often. It’s your fault for not getting therapy for them crow man :P)

I even assigned sum personal picks for songs, if they were just simple popular songs on radio. It's not the full rooster, but merely a general idea for a few personal picks. (mind you that I'm speaking about my zone's radio so I guess things could differ)

For Azul I choose 'Dansam' by Randi, for a more of a take of his romance life, when he realises his feelings of love. This is specifically for my maleidiazu route, and his whole gimmick is him being alone with a long table, tormented by illusions of both Idia and Malleus that never appear together, seemingly having a hard time embracing the fact that he fell in love with 2 people, considering himself a sort of cheater. Even the choreo is translated to: 'So we again Dance, Dance, Dance. Dance to forget.', being a sort of nod to how he handled his past as well, by simply forcing himself and everyone else to forget.

Ace would have a more of a Broadway take on Alors on Dance by Stromate. It's more stemmed from his dislike of school and his uncertainty regarding what he would pursue in the future, unlike his peers who at least have an idea. For a choreography I imagine Ace having to walk across a long hall of portraits depicting various people with varying degrees of personal success.

Smooth operator by Sade! Oh I absolutely wanted to include this one! I love it a lot! And my candidate was none other than Floyd. While he would also be a perfect fit for Billie Jean or Smooth Criminal, him interpreting Smooth operator would be more of a 'monstro lounge live music' events.

For Floyd I also wanted his feelings realisation to be in the form of Lose Control, since that piece just screams him. It would follow more of a film noir/jazz atmosphere, soft but with bright stage lights as if he was performing on a lone stage in a bar.

Now, bc I am a petty lil shipper, for maleidiazu there is also Lay all your love on me, from the musical Mama mia! Which is adapted to 'lay all your love on them', because this is a 3 different places, with the twins, Ortho, Lilia, Sebek and Silver listening to the 3's Woes about their love fantasies and trying to tell them to not waste anymore time and fess up, bc that's just making them seem more petty than usual. :'3

And finally, Kalim's infamous Dance the night by Dua Lipa when he throws a party. This is one of the few instances where everyone is absolutely happy to dance around and party as Kalim sings about it. It's just that very happy atmosphere that excuses a sudden outburst in song and dance. :3

Bonus: Sebek performing Waka Waka by Shakira, because we all know why this would be a fit :3

But the piece of cake would be the first years performing Mr. Originality and I like to move it move it because those just have that vibe for them either thinking they are the Bois or they are just partying in the chaotic manner they always do.

my thoughts on taylor's grammy nominations

i still think midnights is criminally underrated in the fandom, so it would be amazing to see her getting the awards she deserves! absolutely taylor's most cohesive album to date and you can just see how proud she is of it. the lyrics, the production, the visuals, the narratives, everything, just pure pop perfection. i'd expect nothing less from the legend that is miss taylor swift.

1. record of the year - anti hero.

anti hero is a fantastic song, i will never understand why people hate it all the time. it showcases something i think taylor is super good at and that stands her out from other artists - pumping endorphins into the most heart wrenching lyrics. this award is mostly for sound and production however - i'll come back to lyrics later. i think anti hero separates itself production-wise from the rest of midnights (which has a dreamier vibe to it) which i love because it's more raw and personal and honest than the other songs, which are more narrative or experience based. i wouldn't suggest it's the best song on the album, but it's absolutely a deserving single and winner of this award.

it has some super tough competition for this award - it's been an amazing year for music - especially sza's "kill bill" and victoria monét's "on my mama" (both of which i'd be equally happy with as winners). i would say myself that anti hero shines far more in its lyrics than its production, which might hurt it in competition, so if she loses out on any awards, it may well be this one.

2. album of the year - midnights.

in my eyes, midnights won album of the year as soon as it was released. it's just stunning in every possible way. again, there's lots of tough competition from all different genres, but midnights is in a league of its own. the production is gorgeous and (unpopular opinion probably) very different from what she's released in the past, with this amazing dreamy and nostalgic quality to it that brings to life the album concept without it being ostentatious. it follows a clear but not garish or derivative narrative path, again subtly and tastefully presenting its concept. the lyrics are consistently reflective but present differing emotions, which again is indispensable in this particular concept. it's absolutely a 10/10 album in my books, and clearly one of her best, if not her best overall.

3. song of the year - anti hero.

okay, this one is for songwriting, which we know is what taylor swift came to do, and what she will always dominate in. i said about the record of the year nomination that anti hero will be known for its gut wrenching honesty and not necessarily for its sound, and i stand by that here. for me, taylor's selling point is her ability to write music that is obviously deeply personal to her, but also general enough that any of us can relate to it and feel heard and seen. anti hero is a masterclass in this - every word is perfectly crafted in such a way that you can see yourself and your own struggles in it, even if they're nothing to do with hers, without a scrap of taylor's personal feelings being lost in it. it combines beautiful poetic lyrics with a punchy hook that somehow remains perfectly tasteful and never cheap or lazy, and every second of it is dripping with genuine emotion. this is one of the songs of hers that will outlast us, and deserves to be recognised as such.

4. best pop duo/group performance - karma (ft. ice spice)

i will be one to say this song is WAY overhated. it's a grower for sure, but i love it. ice spice is just so excellent with wordplay and rhyming, it's great to see them on a track together. karma is a brilliant song anyway, it's so tongue in cheek it regularly crosses into comedic in an artful way. i don't expect it will win, if i'm honest, not because it's not a good song, which it is, but because it has too much competition for it to live up to standards. most likely it will go (deservedly) to "candy necklace" or "ghost in the machine".

9th 🇪🇪 Alika - Bridges: Sometimes all a guy needs is a simple ballad, and Estonia serves exactly that, with an amazing build-up that's grown on me since it won Eesti Laul.

8th 🇬🇪 Iru - Echo: I always knew Georgia would land in my top 10 for this year, i love when their entries get unique (Three Minutes from Earth is a banger and yall know i'm right) and the "engrish" is just the cherry on top to prove a song doesn't need deep lyrics to be great.

7th 🇨🇿 Vesna - My Sister's Crown: "Sestro krasyva Oy ty syl'na Khorobra yedyna Korona tvoya" will always be stuck in my head, sisterhood all the way 💅💅💅
