"Butata" from Laon is easily the top track with it's basketball-themed lyrics referencing the anime Slam Dunk, which was a hit in the Philippines back in the 2000s. "Butata" literally means getting zero points or losing a game. It's a gritty, hard-hitting track that reflects Pablo’s ability to mix emotional vulnerability with strong, impactful lyricism.

I like all the songs in Alon, especially "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and "Drowning in the Water." The former (TBWCW) is surprisingly not about the boy who cried wolf but about the boy who is also the wolf at the same time, and he's having a dialogue with himself. The latter is a song he wrote about a decade or so ago. Let me add "Wala" as well.

Josh

In 2023, Josh launched his solo single "Wild Tonight," which blends dark, edgy themes with electronic pop influences.

Josh later released "1999" this year, which reflects his personal memories and nostalgia of growing up in the '90s. The song blends retro vibes with modern electronic beats, celebrating the simplicity and joy of youth.

Other notable songs from both the first wave of singles and the current ones include Yoko Na featuring Al James, Get Right, No Control, and Sumaya. The entire Lost and Found album (2024) is bop to be honest, but my personal favorites are Silent Cries, See Me, and Honest.

Felip / Ken

Under his solo name "Felip," he has released tracks like "Palayo" and "Bulan," which explore his creative individuality and experiment with contemporary R&B and hip-hop with some traditional elements. Fake Faces easily makes him a "Rocksta." Let me add Kanako too. It's in Bisaya (another language in the Philippines).

Apart from the singles, he has released the 7 Sins (2024) album. I love the entire album, especially the rage song "envy" and the inspiring "ache." The kids choir at the song's bridge can melt your heart further amid the already heart-melting lyrics. His collaboration with Dutch-Filipino R&B singer Cyra Gwynth "lust" is a must-listen to track as well. The entire album is a must-listen to, actually.

Stell

Stell's songs combine a mix of ballads and pop tracks that allow him to express his personal experiences and artistic growth beyond his work with SB19.

“c’mon y/n! we only have a few hours let’s make it worth our while!” chris exclaims, dragging me in the direction of the bumper cars.

me and my boyfriend of 5 months, chris, were at the california state fair with our friend, madi and his brothers, nick and matt. we had been begging matt to take us, but every time we brought it up, our schedules just wouldn’t match up. so, today was one of the only days we could go before it ended.

once we arrived, we bought our wristbands and started walking around all together until matt told us, “listen. i know you guys have been dying to come here, but..” matt starts to speak, but i tune him out, making jokes with nick and madi.

“…so since im the only one who knows how to drive, you have 5 hours. meet back at the ticket stand at 11. if you guys aren’t here, im leaving you all. dead ass. you guys got that?” he announces.

me and chris nod at him in sync.

“alright, you can go.” matt says, shooing us away.

chris almost runs away from his brother, dragging me along with him.

MATT’S POV ;;

“i feel like im raising some damn kids with those two.” i sigh, looking at madi and nick

“now im raising four kids.” i chuckle

“chris, 5 hours is more than enough time to enjoy ourselves.” i breathe heavily due to him pulling me all the way to the other side of the fair just to get to the bumper cars.

“yea.. but we have to go on every ride and we gotta eat. duh.” he rolls his eyes playfully

“okay okay,” i giggle, “so i’m guessing you wanna go on the bumper cars first, huh?”

“you know me too well, baby.” he smiles, giving me a sweet, soft kiss on my lips, “let’s get in line before it gets too long.”

“wait! i forgot something!” i urgently say.

“what is it, mama?” chris asks, turning around to look at me with a bit of worry in his voice.

i pull his face down to mine and make his mouth meet mine, giving him another soft peck.

“just wanted to kiss you again.” i speak, a smile growing on my face

chris smiles back at me before walking into the line for the bumper cars.

we spent the next four and a half hours riding rollercoasters, goofy kiddie rides and other things. of course we took a snack break and shared a funnel cake with a snowball, but other than that, we were running each other all over the fair grounds, trying to figure out what to get on and what games to play next. chris ended up winning me a gigantic, fluffy, stuffed animal while i beat him in a water gun game, winning a luigi plushie. although i gave it to him anyway since i felt bad for beating him.

but as we approached 11 pm, we had one last ride to get on.

“baby, my feet are wearing and it’s almost 11, can we go wait in the car for nick and the others?” i groan

“just wait, ma. we got one more ride to go on.” he smirks, walking towards the ride, holding my hand like he has been the whole time.

we end up getting in the line to the ferris wheel and surprisingly, there only four people in front of us.

“see? it won’t take us too long, baby” he explained, “it’ll be like 30 seconds.”

“chris, i don’t care how long it takes as long as im with you and as long as we get back to the others by 11.”

he smiles at my reassurance and waits for our turn to get on the ride. once it’s our time to hop on, we do so. we get in the cart and wait for it to start. i lay my head on chris’ shoulder, a comfortable silence between us.

“hey, y/n, baby?” he speaks up

“yes, chris, my love?” i respond, my head still on his shoulder, the ride moving now. we were nearing the top, the view of the fair and the highway below us.

he brings my chin up with one finger to meet his face. he kisses me, slow, soft and passionately. it’s perfect. he’s perfect.

i giggle, “that’s all you wanted to do?”

“no. i also had to tell you this.. i love you, y/n” he announces genuinely.

i quietly gasp, he’s never said that before.. is he serious? “do you mean that, chris?” i ask in disbelief.

“im so serious.” he answers.

“i love you too, chris.” i say, leaning in for another kiss.

only to get cut off by the ride jerking to a stop.

“uh oh..” he murmurs

Confessions of a K-pop Fanfic Reader (part one)

So you are right there, you've heard the first few chords, vocals, rap and beat of a song and after capturing it with Shazam, you read the name of the song except... you can't.... because it's in Hangul; that's K-pop right? And disbelief with disappointment burrows and worms into your psyche. You only listen to English language music as there's no point in hearing something you don't understand, if you wanted something that had lyrics you didn't understand you'd listen to Gregorian chant songs. Still, you feel the need to find the rest of the track but something inside you lurches because K-pop is innocent, childish, nothing but ridiculous Crayon Pop bright colours and T-ARA's "bo-peep, bo-peep, bo-peep, bo..." or the unexpectedly self aware and satirical Gangnam Style (although you haven't necessarily read the translated lyrics yet).

You can't possibly be considering taking the 'genre' seriously? But, those infectious few English lines are stuck in your damn brain and you can't stand the not knowing anymore, so you sneak away to the toilet or claim to be doing some extra work so your discomfort at the possibility of someone seeing and mocking you for it is minimised as much as you can. Hell, you watch porn more openly than this but you still open the Shazam you made a few days or weeks before, knowing you are one click or finger tap away from being completely ridiculed by your friends or family or both for being even willing to consider taking actual time out of your life for K-pop.... But with a deep breath you plunge in, probably with a Stray Kids, BTS or Ateez song and suddenly you are breathless because although you don't understand everything being said, you are completely blown away at the MV quality, which is better than some Western movies in terms of storytelling and editing. Unbeknownst to you the artworks that this small Asian country creates come ready made with the captions in English, plus a few other languages yet it's probably for the best you don't know that because the simple quality of the video takes your breath away.

Wait up though... these people can't possibly be human! How do they all look so fucking good? And how old are they? They look like fresh-faced mid-teens only they can all sing and dance? Oh, but HOLY SHIT CAN THEY RAP-RAP! [Looking at you Rapracha]. It is just impossible that these humans not only exist but most of them dance hardcore choreo whilst singing live too. Nah, nah, nah... it's all bullshit. AI is so fucking good now that these people aren't real.

That's pretty much how discovering K-pop didn't happen for me, an adult old enough to have student debt until I die, who will never own a home because fuck you baby boomers, and finds children to be more like crotch goblins designed to test every last one of the few nerves in my battered self that aren't fucked up by my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

My introduction was truly bizarre; I was married for 20 years - before my husband decided my disability meant he had free reign to fuck anyone who wanted him as I couldn't do it anymore - and my now ex-husband's co-worker had a daughter who wrote fanfics. Now, I was horribly, horribly naïve and rather dumb when I agreed to be a reader, editor and kind of coach for this girl. Not once in my entire life had 'fan fiction' come up in my bubble, I went into the whole endeavour genuinely believing that Seokjin, Yoongi, Hoseok, Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung and Jungkook were Wattpad characters, not real people.

I thought they were like how Reddit has it's 'marriage counselling' and 'divorce' thing that everyone knows is said on that social media platform, or that Facebook has it's passive aggressive posts bitching about something, the baby daddy/mama drama fueled by said posts, the vague sympathy grabbing status updates and fake news, or X's hate trains. Having never heard of BTS (and by having done no googling beforehand) I went into it as if these weren't real people. To say the writing was atrocious from this teen was an understatement, and I was honest about it, figuring you don't ask someone for feedback if you don't want criticism. If all you wanted was read counts, votes and comments, I could have done that multiple times a day to boost you, which it turns out was pretty much exactly what she was really wanting.

Soon though, I was reading other books from the ones recommended at the end of my current read and it staggered me just how fucking good these books were. Some of them desperately deserve to be published in the conventional way with their highly detailed and provoking writing that I still return to time and time again. However, one glaring detail eventually stood out to me as I lay in a hospital bed with IV antibiotics in one arm and opioid IV in the other, having very, very little of importance to ponder, and one thing that stood out all of a sudden, and I couldn't avoid anymore, was how no one described the characters in terms of look and age; it was as if the writer assumed everyone reading knew what they looked like already...

Now my fucking dumbass was still thinking these were 'Wattpad characters', thus there would be a master document on the app with these details, right? Please bear in mind it had been a year or more that I had been living in the misconception fog thinking these weren't real people at that point, so a master list of characters to choose from simply made sense to me.

Yep, I am kind of stupid for assuming, and yep, I trawled the Wattpad help pages for far too many hours looking for this document or link to one, which admittedly gave me something to focus on as the cocktail of pharmaceuticals made me feel nauseous and also rather high. Am I just too trusting and gullible or can anyone else see my flawed logic here?

As it began to niggle more, seeing the references to South Korea (with the incredibly amusing American way of behaving ascribed to the country that was worlds different to the USA), with Seoul, Busan and Daegu all mentioned my singular lonely brain cell bounced around my skull sparking something off in there. That's when it dawned on me this could be a kpop thing and I finally googled the most common name from the stories, Jungkook, and felt like a bucket of ice water was tipped over my head as I realised that these people were real. Yeah, yikes 😬💀

It distressed me that I had been so blasé as to read these pieces without questioning the similarities. I was even considering becoming a co-writer for the first girl until that moment. Some of this can be explained by my condition during 2018 to 2019, with multiple hospital admissions due to infections or injuries from the Ehler-Danlos Syndrome. One of the infections almost killed me because it was missed for too long and had moved into early stage sepsis. There was no way I could focus on my normal book fare of Charles Dickens and thick, detailed history books and, being truly, truly frank, Wattpad saved my fucking sanity over those two daunting and harrowing years, never demanding more than my mind could handle with all the drugs being pushed into my system.

Plus there were hundreds of thousands of stories to pick from that weren't even Fanfic, about real people or other author's characters. Although I was careful as I was passionately determined to avoid anything that I would consider debauched and invasive, the mature content option was firmly turned off, and the first sign of smut had me gone! A few kisses or implied sexual conduct squeezed through but not full smut. Hello repressed religious trauma!. The amount of stories that were not flagged as Mature Content pissed me off then and pisses me off still.

Once the shock of finding out the truth was easing a little, I decided I needed to actually watch some BTS music videos to try and understand the craziness of it all. What I never expected was just how deep the songs were and are, nor how intellectual the entire industry is because who the fuck else is making music videos based around novels like Demian in the West?

I didn't realise in addition that not only Korean would sneak its way into my brain but that the whole idol industry is interwoven with its own language. This answered many questions I had about the common jargon such as comeback, lore, promotions, era, main, lead, sub, bias, bias wrecker/s, OT#, Big4, ult, PC (photo card), fan meets, Naver, Weverse, V-Live (rip to the GOAT), Chan's Room [*sniff* Baby, you aren't in any trouble, okay? Please just come home, we all miss you and love you, please, please come back!], 1/2/3/4th Gen, and more my messed up brain can't recall so late at night and after the various narcotics that I take to function.

And those narcotics are saying no more today!

The Culture of Pop Music

Just like any other culture it has a history. It has people who belong to and appreciate it and it has people that don't.

Jungkook has clearly stated his wish to be part of it.

There’s been a massive resurgence of early 2000s trends including fashion and music trends. We can see music of 2023 sampling, covering, being influenced by and paying homage to that era in their sounds and visuals.

There *IS* a conversation that has been going on for as long as I can remember AND before, as to pop music and it’s relationship with black culture. That’s not a topic that will be covered here. However it’s worth noting that Pop music, being so heavily influenced by black culture, leads to sensitivities when highlighting the things liked or disliked about pop music, it’s lyrics, visuals, sounds etc.

A lot of dance moves in pop music videos, seen as provocative by some audiences are praised and not seen as anything more than an extension of the music. The artists are praised for their sensual movements to the beat, reminiscent of how the listener may dance to the same song with their friends or partners at the club, in their car, at a house party, places you’d expect to enjoy pop music. The dancing mostly isn’t taken for more than what it, an addition to the visuals. Pop music videos are rarely seen as a reflection of the artists real life interactions, most viewers don’t expect the artists to dance off a car, on a metal fence or on a crane in real life.

Music can be playful, music can be fun, music doesn’t have to be serious, filled with soul searching, heartbreak, lyrical genius, layered production or activist messages.

Pop music in particular is meant to be catchy, it’s meant to be easy listening. Not always require of depth and analysis. With pop music especially, sometimes it is what it is.

This is the genre that JK has based his solo debut on so far. These are a few examples of his peers within that genre. Not BTS.

Critically acclaimed Singer & Songwriter Victoria Monet, known for writing for some of the biggest pop stars including Ariana Grande. MV visuals with male and female dancers, chores, skin on display. Singing about confidence, sex and the addition of strong language to her lyrics.

Pop music of different decades has always had those that didn't subscribe to it and had lovers of it, it was seen with The Beatles, it was seen with Elvis, it was seen with Madonna. They all had the terms ‘scandalous’, ‘not suitable for kids’, ‘too provocative’, ‘basic’ etc attached to them at some point in their career.

Opposers of pop music have been heard time and time again over the years to praise their favoured genre for having more depth, more quality, more artistry etc whilst seeing pop music as lesser, as commercial and lacking artistic integrity.

Michael Jackson had major push back when shedding his child star image from his group with his brothers to become a soloist, yet today he is one on the biggest icons of music history, pop music, as are all the aformentioned artists.

In every period there were people for and people against.

This post is not about the harmful tropes within pop music, the objectifying visuals, the problematic lyrics etc. There are many issues with pop music, just like there are issues with rock music with parent and religious groups, divisive issues with country music, appropriation issue with the aforementioned and with Jazz music. Each genre has its issues. Each genre have people who love it or hate it.

This is just about the fact that pop culture exists, it has always existed, it's a culture that is important to a lot of people, it is understood and appreciated by a lot of people. It has always had people also against it, it has always had people trying to hold it accountable and people who do not enjoy it.

This is the culture, its always been here and most likely always will.

You don't have to like it, you don't have to love it, but there are those that do and that doesn't make one wrong and one right, it doesn't make one superior nor on inferior.

It’s the genre at present that JK wants to be apart of, that he wants to fit in with and he’s doing so well when looked at along side those successful and praised in that genre.

Comparing Jungkook to his old solo or group music and old style or comparing Jungkook to his members recent solo works does a huge disservice to him and to the other members. They've specifically stated that they wanted to show their individual colours separate to the group's.

By Jungkook's own admission he wants to be a global pop star, instead of looking to compare, either him to himself or him to others, when you look at the examples of popstars of today and of the early 2000s, Jungkook has achieved that and is continuing in that path. His solo rollout fits in with his pop peers.

It's a culture, its always been here and most likely always will.

𝚃he plot of is quite straightforward with the boys already being captured and put in a complex maze. The intro to the mvs shows us that they are trying to figure out how to escape the maze. An interesting thing that you might have noted is that they are not shown to use their powers explicitly or the escape might have been very simple, especially Jongin having the ability to teleport himself and "other energy" — The War repackage, Power merch as seen on Kai character cards:

Another instance is that Chen is unable to turn on a lamp in the maze.

• The intro gives us important clues, let's go through the scenes:

Everyone seems unhappy. Minseok and Junmyeon look for clues on the walls of the maze to find a way out. Kyungsoo gets a box(?) and opens it to find sand which correlates with his power of Force (also known as Earth-bending) which he empties upon seeing glimpses of their future (hands behind screen). This scene is connected to the very next in which Yixing is lying down with (lol idk how to say this) sand going up.

From Mama intro: "two worlds that look alike" but they cannot meet until the Red Force (believed to be a corrupt organization) is purified so they are in the same place (LaySoo, XiuHo, SeTao) but do not see each other.

•Baekhyun has his back towards the map to the maze:

Why is he not trying to get out even though the answers are behind him? Many believe this is because he wants to protect himself as he is the Heart of the tree of life. Baek does not want them to leave the maze.

• Does Obsession happen after Overdose? In Lucky One theory mv we see how they are captured and subdued by the ladies. Twitter user @erisxekso posted this:

• They dance in 2 settings one of which looks like the inside of a cube. Notice how the subunits M & K dance in different cubes as discussed earlier. There is plenty of evidence for correlating Tempo and Overdose. Visit Exo & the cube Theory↗ where I have pointed out various links and how significant the cube is in Exo's lore. The red lights suggest it an illusion or plane created by the RF.

• SM leaked overdose mv (little different outros from the official ones on yt) which provides us an important detail. Here are both m ver and k ver in primitive form lol. We see that Luhan and Kai seem to be near the exit of the maze but a mechanism closes the exit so they are unable to escape through the dead end. Yes, we are yet to know what happens next.

_Clue: time-bound puzzle which is another instance of how Tao is unable to stop, reverse or speed up time.

Amino user vip.imnida posted a brilliant theory based on their physical ver of Overdose Album. Basically, they traced a faint line on it which is a path connecting the centres of each hexagon present in the big maze. I agree that the codes on the centre of each hexagon correspond to a member or their location.

• I'm sure you've noticed at 1:52 of the K ver mv, Jongdae passes a bolt of lightening to Yixing who tosses it upwards. It has been explained that he is the healer in the grp so he does not get hurt but tosses it out of the way. In the M ver, Baek passes his power to Junmyeon(?) who gives it back to him. waaa this is confusing I think this relates to Chanyeol's scenes in What is Love mv / Debut Teaser 20. He is reading a book of prophecy:

At the margins, this page shows Suho's symbol pointing towards Baekhyun's and an arrow pointing from it to Yixing's. They're also drawn inside the triangle with Kai's symbol in centre. Yes! They are connected and we will discuss this imp motif soon :)

• Some believe that another clue could be the iconic head drum choreography 😭 (1:35 and 2:58 timestamps) they are literally dancing to the beat of the RF. We have seen in Lucky One how they were subdued by the nurses.

An important deduction is that Lucky One is the prequel to Overdose since the title is a glaring hint: they were drugged and "it's too much." Also, are they calling the doctor who has ties with the red visored nurses?

The repeated calls for a doctor underscore the severity of this 'overdose,' suggesting that the protagonist is aware of the peril but is unable to resist the allure of this all-consuming passion.

Agreed. Yixing's Honey might be connected to Overdose lore-wise because of the honeycomb patterns in both mvs. There are some minor references which Exo have made in their music since the beginning. He IS captivated. atp I'm too dumb to dive deep into it when SM be ijbol_ing all these years at fan theories.

It is important to understand that SM has neither confirmed nor denied any theories so it is all open for speculation^^ (hoping they release a book or movie on this 😭 seriously). I haven't been able to decode certain clues with SM using elements for aesthetic.

and yeah, i agree that it's not as interesting as other title tracks. but im glad the studio ver is much better so now i can analyze it better. it's flat because because the bass and general beat never really change between verses or the chorus. though they did take it out for the pre chorus which makes sense (to build up to the chorus). so it's kinda like point A (verse 1) to point B (pre chorus) back to point A (chorus) instead of point C (the would-have chorus). thats why it's "flatter." the end has a different beat right before the "iconic last 30 seconds" but then the last 30 seconds once again has the same bass/beat. that would be my one "criticism" for the song BUT I STILL LOVE IT i am just a music nerd.

take guerrilla for example, the bass at the beginning leads you in. it's loud and obnoxious and wonderful. more instruments are added after hongjoong's rap which differentiates it and gives the neurons more to chew on. pre chorus with a different beat (duh) builds up to a chorus with the same bass but it's MUCH dialed back. you have to listen closely to hear it. jongho's part comes in with a COMPLETELY different beat. the original beat is gone. it's just more varied and COOL and different.

theres nothing wrong w a neverending bass, it's just it does make the song a little more flat no matter how noisy or crazy it is

Heart of Steel - Ukraine can't win two years in a row which is why they're bringing a black musician so he can perform a song that slaps so hard for all of the white europeans to be too intimidated to vote for

Bridges - Pretty ballad, I can see tumblr hating how many votes this will get, I hope her voice does it justice on stage

Samo Mi Se Spava - A sentiment I can relate lol. the second song so far that I'm OBSESSED with. I hope they don't ruin the stage design (if they can find a way to improve on this??? get a real big robot on stage maybe??? please do this justice!!)

My Sister's Crown - A damn good entry, one of those ones it'd be an actual crime not to promote to finals, as long as they can get the staging right (wish they could get all the costumes on stage!)

My thoughts on Treasure - The Second Step: Chapter Two

(edit: I wrote this in 2022 and didn't post it for some reason :p I'm posting it now, cause it was fun to read my reactions to the songs. wrote VolKno was my least fav song from the album and it's just not true omg, I love VolKno 😭)

Finally getting around to typing out my thoughts eventhough the album has been out for like a month and promotions have basically ended lol

Hello: Perfect song 10/10! I swear I cried when i first saw the MV/ listened to the song because it's just so them! It's everything Treasure stands for: being young and having fun.

People are still calling Treasure 'a young group', eventhough they have been in the industry for 2 years and are no longer rookies. They are not even younger then other groups who debuted that same year, but they seem like it because they are allowed to act/look their age. Other groups mostly go for a serious and mature concept so having Treasure release 'Hello' feels like a breath of fresh air.

It's a song meant for festivals and concerts! The choreo is fun to watch and I can't wait to see them perform it for their Seoul concert + Japan concert tour + MAMA performance 💙

VolKno: It's a rock song with rap and about rap which is cool. the instrumental sounds like it could be from Linkin Park.

It's probably my least favorite song on the album but that's only because the other songs are just so good. the reason is that they went with a classic kpop song structure for a rapsong which is just weird to me. They did verse-prechorus-chorus-verse-prechorus-chorus-bridge-outro while most k-rapsongs i've listened to are verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus

This would bave allowed Yoshi to have an entire verse to himself instead of getting the prechorus. He had to keep to the beats and couldn't rap in his flow. and that's too bad because out of HyunHaYo, I love Yoshi's flow the most.

I also want to apologize to Yoshi. Reading the translation of his verses, I was really dissipointed because they didn't seem that good/interesting? But then I saw ItsANDYandJAS's analysis video on youtube and I realise how wrong i've been lol

translated the lyrics of his first verse are:

"Bang Bang, appearing like a lightning

Handle every single dirty rats

Flip the stage proudly, i'm a star

Our company is hip and turn silent"

I took his lyrics at face value while obviously i shouldn't have smh.

I was thinking, why use rats in your lyrics?, and i'm not going to pretend to know Yoshi, but that doesn't sound like him at all. Now I realise it's a play on words with the next part of the verse. (flip the stage/flip the word ---> rats becomes star ughhhh i did not see that)

"Our company is hip and turn silent" is a play on words in Korean as well + he delibirately accentuates certain words so it basically becomes: "Our company = hiphop." It's what the whole song is about -> the influence their seniors had on the K-hiphop scene.

Really looking forward to the MV! the teaser images make it seem like it's western inspired. In the bridge there is that 'hands up' moment, it would be cool to see that in the MV.

CLAP!: What a song! Again so much fun + they added a singalong ending. This will be so much fun on stage. Asahi really outdid himself on this album. Yoshi's rapverse really stands out to me here. The next Darari. Now Yedam and Asahi should release that christmas song they teased last year lol. My favorite bside of the album. (edit: ah now I see why i never posted this 😭 I wrote this right before it was announced Mashidam left the group omg)

Thank You: Another masterpiece by Asahi. A rock song which I totally didn't expect Asahi to do. + now it's a whole song with only his voice . i've been waiting for this moment since his one line in Going Crazy lol. he's going to rock the stage. can you imagine Asahi and Haruto on stage together during their Japan concert tour?? singing this song in Japanese?? my heart srsly this will be amazing. I'm so fucking proud of him. it's the perfect fusion of Kpop and Jpop. I kind of need Asahi to release an album with songs he composed and are sung by the treasure members. as their editor puts it: Give me that guys hard drive. his voice is srsly insane. like the prechorus?? it's so fucking good

Hold it in: (edit: apparently I hadn't written a review for hold it in back then so I'll do it now ^^ It's my absolute favorite slow song from Treasure (it rivals Orange?!) and I hope they never remove it from their setlist! Before the album came out, I remember thinking 'It's the last song on the album and those are usually slow songs, but how it that possible when Hyunsuk wrote it???' The fact Hyunsuk wrote such diverse songs (this and VolKno) on 1 album is just so amazing and I hope the next album will have another song written by Hyunsuk!)

It's an OT10 comeback and while I miss Yedam and Mashiho alot, I also didn't feel sad listening to this album, watching the promotions etc. Treasure really gave it their all so we wouldn't feel Mashidamr's absence and I'm actually so proud of OT10. It's tough on fans but it's even worse for them and they didn't show it at all.

definitely their best album. very diverse, but still they songs fit well together. it's shows what treasure is capable of.

i have SO MANY feelings about kpop and we're gonna cover a pretty wide spectrum of stuff here including some classics that still stand the test of time that you may or may not have heard if you're newer to kpop. all of these groups i recommend more than just these mvs, but these are places to start if they're groups you haven't listened to so let's gooooo

Monsta X

fave song by my fave group first, obviously i'm gonna start here. Monsta X is an insanely talented group and just everything they do is great? they have so many bangers and especially now that they're writing and producing most of their music themselves, they're constantly thinking outside of the box with style and song structure and just. i love them so much and i love this song so much. you literally cannot go wrong with them. they're one of the few groups with multiple no skip albums for me. absolute kings.

Bigbang

wanna talk about groups i have feels about? i already had so many feelings about Bigbang, and GD's new songs plus the performance at MAMA this past weekend have had me crying 3-5 times a day the past few days so we're gonna go with this anthem. Bigbang was my intro to kpop in 2008 and so much has happened and things have changed to say the least but just. the grip they have on me and always will. this song goes hard and has almost 700 million views on youtube as i write this for a REASON.

2NE1

MY QUEENS. no girl group can or will ever top them for me. sorry not sorry. icons. that's all there is to it.

SHINee

i did say i had been a kpop fan since 2008 so you shouldn't be surprised this list is 2nd gen heavy so far. i deeply love a lot of newer SHINee songs too, but View is the jewel in the crown that is SHINee's discography. one of the most talented groups that's ever existed, in all ways- dancing, singing, production, composition, styling, everything.

NCT Dream

you ever hear a song that gently pokes you in a bunch of your emotions including the nostalgic and sad ones but still leaves you with hope and a sense that everything is gonna be better and like the future is bright so it's okay to be optimistic? Broken Melodies soars.

NCT 127

returning to the harder faster heavier beats vibe of the first few songs in this list. 127 covers a pretty wide spectrum of styles like a lot of groups, but this is the stuff i gravitate towards the most so here we are. uhhhh i don't know what else to say about this pick or these boys. i just really love NCT and all parts of it and this song was in my top 5 songs on Spotify last year despite not coming out until October so that should tell you how good it is. yes.

Oneus

Oneus has finally started getting the kind of recognition that they deserve and Luna is the song that cracked that for them. they're masters of mixing traditional sounds with modern kpop styles and have done it more than once. this song is rare in modern kpop also for the fact that the entirety of the song is in Korean without a single English lyric through the whole thing. it's gorgeous.

Onewe

Oneus's brother band (literally, there's a pair of twins split between the two groups) definitely deserves more attention too. their music is fantastic and their vocal blend is top notch, and Dongmyeong (their half of the twins!) plays KEYTAR how could you possibly go wrong?? they let themselves get covered in water for this MV and drowned a bunch of copies of their actual equipment, no nice instruments were harmed in the making of this mv.

A.C.E

do i have a deep love of underrated groups? maybe yes. the styling in this MV is INCREDIBLE, even if the song wasn't phenomenal it would be worth watching it just for the outfits, a stunning blend of traditional Korean clothing mixed with modern cuts, fabrics, styles, and accessories. it's just so cool and everyone looks so good.

WayV

listen i'm sure we could debate on whether or not WayV should be on a list like this but they're part of NCT and they're essentially just a mostly Mandarin singing kpop group. they release a lot of their songs with Korean versions (like Frequency which literally came out today and has only a Korean MV) and they live in Seoul and they perform on Korean music shows and etc. whatever. just listen to Phantom because it's incredible and they're beautiful and this MV is dripping in spooky vibes and luxurious outfits and men being entirely too pretty for their own good.

i love them. They are super funny on social media, and their music is incredible. Screaming this song at the top of my lungs fixes me a little every time. Woosung is also a soloist and he's amazing.

This song gives me the shivers.

I think WOODZ is vastly underappreciated, and i wish more people were as into him as i am.

i know i already talked about them a little bit, but i have to do it again because i love them. just a bunch of insanely talented, stupidly hot weirdos. i love that they're all nerds who make legos together and that everyone but hongjoong and jongho have zero concept of personal space. wooyoung and san are medalists in the kiss your homie olympics. (woo is also bffs with changbin and also yeonjun from txt)

i'm still obsessed with this song and this MV. the ateez lore is very intricate and this is basically cinema.

OnlyOneOf

i am obsessed with OOO. they are incredible. they do most of their own choreo, they committed to making their MVs queer af and include messages of acceptance and support for the lgbtq community in the notes for all their videos. they paired themselves up and talk about kissing each other casually.

and they back it all up with high concept MVs, insane choreo, and great music that will absolutley get stuck in your head. picking a song was hard, but this choreo is too iconic

Hwasa

i am obsessed with her. she is also in mamamoo, who are great, but i am currently absolutely obsessed with her cover of lunch. but this song which is a pretty direct call out of the rampant body shaming in the industry is so much fun.

KARD

kard is the only mixed gender kpop group i know of, and we need more.

they are all adults, and their music and MVs are, too. killer dancey tracks. their friendship is a lot of fun.

BM is also a soloist, and has some very explicit horny songs that don't bother with the (barely) innuendo that kard plays with. he's also hilarious on SM, and on the daebak show

Enhypen

they're just good. i love a concept album, and they killed it with this.

Evnne

i love them.

they were all on boys planet, and i love all the groups that formed from that show (i was going to cheat and make a whole playlist of bp groups, but i'm just going to share this one and i'll make a whole separate bp post)

this video and song are just so fun, and they're so good, and i wanted to yell about them.

(all the boys planet boys are also stray kids levels of obsessed with each other, which i appreciate --zb1 is probably the worst-best about this, but they're all super close)

this is just so much fun

no one really sounds like blitzers. the horns and big band elements are wholly unique and fit surprisingly well. they are super talented and clearly having a good time with what they do, and it's just a good time.
