Got a question about what brushes I use & figured I might as well go through my process as well for anyone curious (because spoilers. I blend so much whatever brush I start with is often irrelevant)

I draw on procreate and I almost exclusively use this brush pack (Dawner’s procreate brush pack vol. 1)!

For this, I used the “chalk, but you paint with it” brush for everything. (Sometimes I will switch to “personal 6b 1” for pieces where I'm not going to be blending the shit out of everything)

Starting with this sketch of Wekono. Typically my sketches aren't super clean like this but since I'm dealing with scales it’ll be better in the long run.

Next I color (and shade)

Lineart/sketch layer gets turned to an overlay, and I merge it with the color. Now it's time to blend

I tweak the colors a bit, add some bloom, add some darker/lighter colors wherever I think they're needed. Also added a little noise for some texture. BAM!

Newer player here (tarted last year). What's your opinion on the current state of the game's lore?

i’ve always had mixed feelings about how they handle the lore, but i assume most of that is nostalgia from the time where there wasnt any lore at all and the community made their own connections, those were the good days!

this is gonna get very long so i’ll put it under a readmore

the game has been notorious for ignoring the lore of older champions and instead focusing on the stories which fuel the main story going forward, which is both a good and a bad thing.

its a bad thing because me and many other players have favourite characters who were added to the game during its beta and alpha stages really havent gotten much spotlight or exploration of their part of the story, and personally it leaves me pretty indifferent towards the new champions. if i had it my way there would be events about certain past events, or comics, or short videos, literally anything to give background to the world and characters theyve already created. i feel that the lack of this has made the worldbuilding in paladins quite poor? the best thing that happened in regards to the lore was the ‘a realm divided’ video which gave us that background, but it kinda ended there.

theres a lot of questions to be answered that i think would benefit the worldbuilding, such as more info on a lot of the nonhuman characters, the stallaga, the vulpin, the summer court. to be honest a good handful of champions mention nature as a big source of power but that just hasnt been touched on yet?

a problem that i’ve talked about for years is the way they haphazardly throw random, and sometimes quite important pieces of lore, at us on places like twitter or discord. only a few weeks ago was mal’damba revealled to be a ska’drin in a reply to a tweet by the community manager, which now that we know that, is a major piece of his character. other examples include buck being confirmed a past member of the thousand hand guild in a lore question on twitter. as someone whos been following paladins for years, the only place i trust to get all the paladins lore knowledge i need is myself, because i’ve kept up to date with everything from everywhere, and there isnt really a place where its all accurately recorded. and thats a major problem.

in regards to the current continuing story, it feels to me that conflicts and storylines are never really resolved? we jump to one threat to another without any real conclusion. gods and incredibly powerful keep coming to the mortal realm and you’d think that would be a major thing but it seems to happen so fucking often that nobody bats an eyelid. hell, corvus summoned raum who is a literal destructive demon from hell and...... then what? we just jumped to story about the darkness. from a marketing standpoint, this continuting story and constant conflict is good for the game because it gets new players interested in the next big action packed event, but honestly its really overwhelming.

octavia’s addition has been a momentary breath of relief because shes the first champion in a year who hasnt been associated with a god or a higher power, shes just a woman with a gun, and i missed that so much. i think if the game’s story continued with the conflict brought on by the crystal war then it would have been beneficial to the worldbuilding, older characters, and story as a whole. presenting the resistance and magistrate as both morally grey sides in the debate would make for a very interesting point of exploration (if you want a story that handles grey morality of opposing factions fantastically, i recommend picking up arknights).

overall, i understand why the lore is like this. they need to release these big, powerful, crazy looking characters because at the end of the day paladins is a free-to-play game that needs engagement and characters like the huge abyss worm yagorath bring that engagement. i get it. but viewing the lore as it is, it is messy, poorly handled, and the only reason i’m still indulging in it is because i’ve been here too long and i want to see how it ends.

You might notice these are a lot simpler than the ones later on, because unlike OW or Paladins, I barely really played TF2 outside of a surface level so hope you don’t mind that.

Overwatch

Disco - Tracer or Genji, sometimes Lucio if healers are needed. All about that speed.

Mac - Soldier or Hanzo, but can play pretty much anyone. Usually subscribes to simpler playstyles, but is good at using them effectively.

Twist - Echo, Mei, Sombra, or Symmetra. Likes to be the annoying player, but tries to avoid annoying playstyles. True defeat is losing and being unable to insult your opponent out of rage, despite all the rage you hold in

Dougie - Torbjorn, Junkrat, or Wrecking Ball, depending on his mood. Unlike Twist, he is as annoying as possible

Salsa - Almost always plays support usually going Mercy, Zen or Brigitte. Sometimes picks up Zarya

Samba - Reaper, Pharah, McCree or D.va, usually trying to get big kills with Ultimates

Tango - Reinhardt, Winston, Roadhog or Orisa. Go tank or go home, usually opting for close combat, so he also has a pocket Reaper and Doomfist

Tap - Hanzo, Widowmaker and sometimes Ashe. Will sometimes pick Ana if they’re down a healer, but isn’t good at it. Enjoys sniping.

Jig - Baptiste, Sigma, Zenyatta or Symmetra. Enjoys characters with multiple pieces that require keeping track of at times

Waltz - Moira or Ana, enjoying the duality of healing and dealing damage, although she dabbles with Ashe from time to time.

Wow I covered everyone but Bastion. Anyway, now for the best game of the three dont @ me (Idk if I’ll go into as deep of strategical phrasing here since a lot of its covered in the OW section but)

Disco - Maeve (loving that Catgirl Life), Cassie (loves the mobility and the crossbow), Evie, and Talus. She’s a huge fan of most of the flanks since that suits her style of play.

Mac - Viktor, Willo, Mal’Damba, Buck, Lex. Do not sleep on Mac in Paladins, he has cards specialized for every character down to a science, he has frankly spent way too much time on this game.

Twist - Imani (main), Corvus, Inara, Koga. Can adapt to any playstyle, and overall just kicks all kinds of ass.

Dougie - Ruckus, Bomb King, Moji, Zhin. The former two because “they’re funny” and the latter two because they make people angry

Salsa - Once again, really likes healing, so she usually picks Seris, Furia, Grover, or Grohk.

Samba - Dredge (for the aesthetic), Drogoz, Bomb King, Fernando. Aiming is for suckers. Still usually leads the charge

Tango - Terminus (main), Makoa, Khan, Raum. He’s just a guy that tanks hard. He isn’t that good at the game though.

Tap - Strix main, Kinessa, Sha Lin, Vivian. Sometimes switches to Ash if she’s tilted.

Jig - Torvald, Atlas, Corvus, Ying. Enjoys all of the stranger and more out there mechanics and loves using them in fun ways.

Waltz - Pip (feels a sort of kinship with a character that fires potions that can be used to harm and heal. Considered making a potion that turns people into chickens at one point), Io, Skye, and Tiberius (although she isn’t very good as Tiberius. Disco thinks she has as crush on him, which she ADAMANTLY denies)

Tomura - When plating w/ others he plays Raum but without them he plays Moji

Dabi - He was reluctant to play but he tried it out as Imani and became obsessed with her. No he doesn’t use her ice ability. Yes that screws him over every time.

Toga - She can play all the flanks but Maeve is her #1 (bc they’re literally the same)

Jin - He has a good ol’ time as Pip (but healing pip not flank pip)

Shuichi - Mal’Damba bc he feels connected to the snake friend. He also plays Lian from time to time.

Atsuhiro - Dredge. No question. Ghost pirate or bust. He has level 0 on every other character.

Kenji - She likes to be Furia bc the whole guardian angel aesthetic really vibes with her. And Willow bc she likes to throw the seed bombs.

Keigo - He’s pretty good at everyone but mostly mains Io and Koga.

Why I like them: Badass, dedicated, super cool design and mysterious-yet-understandable motives. Also, Wekono is my mom.

Why I don’t: IDK what fandom interp of Mal’Damba is lately and I’m not gonna go check but last time I poked my head into Paladins fandom it seemed like he was kinda getting boiled down to “grouchy healer archetype”.

Head Canon: Hard to have a relationship with. Mal’Damba’s #1 priority is Wekono, and of course he is going to put veneration and service above a significant other; anyone who wants (and is lucky enough) to get a relationship with him will have to understand that he’s dedicated his life to something.

Hello, champions.

It is with sadness that I announce I am leaving the blog. It has gone inactive and almost all mods have lost interest in Paladins and the blog. I have too, for it doesn’t feel like the game I used to love anymore. My attention has been taken away by other games, work, and starting a studio with a friend. I simply cannot try to write for the blog anymore.

I apologise to everyone who sent in a prompt that I will not be answering, and I’m not sure if anyone will anymore. Goodbye, Paladins. It’s been a wonderful few years.
