How to get the confidence to dress alternative in public: LONG POST {from a scene king!!}

I hear a lot of young teens online saying things along the lines of, “I would love to dress like that but I’m scared”. We’ve all been there, it takes bravery to step outside the box. Since 2020, there has been an uptick in alternative fashion, which makes things a little better, but it doesn’t mitigate the fear some people feel.

As someone who has been dressing alternative all throughout highschool and who I’d like to think has some 17 year old wisdom, this is how you can get the confidence to dress how you want. This can apply to other alternative fashion types like decora, punk, goth ect ect.

Realize why you’re scared: Is it because you’re afraid of being different or picked on? Are you afraid of change? Do you think your friends/peers won’t care about you anymore? These are all valid reasons, and once you know why, you can start to tackle it. Change isn’t bad, everyone changes, change is natural. Look around at nature, seasons change, we grow and age, animals migrate and go through metamorphosis. You don’t have to be confined to one thing forever just because you weren’t born that way. As for the fear of being picked on, fuck those people. Do you know why people tease others? It’s because they’re insecure. Hurt people hurt people. When people see you being yourself and they wish they could do that, they take it out on you because in their heart, they’re jealous. You’re not the problem, they are. (If you’re afraid of being physically hurt, that is completely different and I would not advise putting your safety in jeopardy)

Start slow. While you’re still building your wardrobe, you can start slowly stepping out with small accessories and such. Add some kandi to your outfit or a tattoo choker. This is mainly to ease yourself into it. Big changes can be pretty scary and jarring, so easing into it can help you.

Have some role models. By this I mean, have people you look up to, people that are inspiration to you. Me? Some of mine here on tumblr are @xx-may4-malic3-xx , @xx-k1tsun3-k1d-xx , @xxdespairfactionashtonxx , @cigsnvalentines to name a few. Theres also some old scene queens, musicians, ect. Find whoever you want. I’m reccomending this, because when you see other people doing the same as you, it makes you go “if they can do it, so can I”. Most people probably wont even mind if you send them an ask about specific things (ik i dont, i love them).

Kinda the same point, but build a community. We have a pretty good community here on tumblr. Community is the backbone to everything. Ideally it would be someone irl, but not everyone is lucky enough to have cool irl friendz.

Fake it till you make it. Nobody has to know you’re scared but you. I’m not saying get super extroverted if you’re introverted and go around exuding confidence like a lazar beam. Dance in your mirror, hype yourself up. Take cool pictures and edit them, even if you don’t post them online. Learn to walk with your head up, again SLOWLY. As you start introducing more alternative elements into your wardrobe, wear them with pride.

Be the change you want to see. What I mean is if you want people to be kinder, you be kinder. Try to compliment someone every day. People actually aren’t as rude as you think, maybe I’m an optimist, but I think the average person isn’t terrible. Complimenting other people also makes you feel good, try it. Piggybacking off this point, don’t take things so personally. I know if can be easier to harp on the negative looks and comments you got versus the good ones, but you have to look past this. There are gonna be bad apples always, but their misdeeds can blind you from the people who think you’re pretty cool. Don’t let one bad apple ruin the bunch.

Lastly, realize being cringe is okay. Not just realize it, but internalize it. What even is cringe? Define cringe… Weird? Different? Everyone is different, everyone is weird about something. As I said earlier, some people are just too scared to be themselves. In 80 years when you’re old and looking back on your life, would you rather regret not being your authentic self, or think of all the fond memories of your life? Regret is one of the worse things in life, it’s terrible. There is nobody you can be but yourself. You’re you, so be you.

Remember that this is something that can take months or years. I feel like this past year and a half I have become fully confident in my fashion. I have been dressing alternative for 5 years for reference. I hope this could help someone.

The idea that men having unrealistic beauty standards for women comes from them watching pornography has always struck me as like, laughably and obviously wrong. That's...where I honestly saw the most representation and celebration of "unconventional" beauty? And not in a "everyone is beautiful" positivity post way, with raw, unfiltered, honest hunger for things men are assumed to find repulsive. When I met women with saggy breasts irl I wasn't like "oh no! What's wrong with them? They're not supposed to be affected by gravity..." I was like, "Oh dope, these are some of my favourite kinds of tits".

Some people can get into bubbles, sure. But it's not a porn issue. You honestly don't have to look that far. There is a media industry built entirely off of dangerously dishonest representations of women's bodies... it's just the regular fucking film industry.

Let's say I wanna see a legit, actual fat woman being the centre of attention, and being portrayed as devastatingly attractive. Please, by all means, what Hollywood films should I watch? You might come up with a few examples, maybe. But I listen when my fat friends talk, I know how shit rep is for fat women. Can I go to the theatre and be more confident than a coin flip's chance that the movie I see will even acknowledge or portray the existence of fat women? Because I can find thousands of examples of that in porn in seconds. It's an entire fucking genre. The dudes that you presume have a monolithic and universal hatred of rolls of fat have a pretty sizeable wing that will honestly get fucking apoplectic in the comments if someone is described as fat who's merely chubby.

Can you honestly, with a straight fucking face, tell me that I can go to the theatre right now, pick a random movie, and be at all likely to see a movie with a woman with even one (1) hair on her body below her eyebrows? There is plenty of porn with totally hairless women, some of which is super fuckin gross about it, sure. But like, doesn't matter how "gritty and realistic" a movie is, I'm more likely to see a corpse than an armpit hair in a movie theatre. By comparison, there are legit mainstream porn performers who do regular, mainstream scenes with a bush, hairy armpits, all of it. It's not uncommon. It's not hard to find. And it's...the point? It's hot? It's not just fine, it's not there to demonstrate how artistic the movie is being, it's hot.

There is definitely tons of porn built around showing the most conventionally attractive women possible, but proportionally, compared to mainstream films, porn has way more varied body representation. You take two guys, lock them in a room, and show one nothing but Hollywood movies and the other nothing but porn, one of those guys would react with surprise/horror when presented with an average naked woman, and it's not the one who's been watching porn. Like, porn is about wanting to fuck people. Wanting to fuck all sorts of people. In order to do that, you kinda have to...show all sorts of people? If you want to make porn about, "Hey, what if you could have sex with that fat mom" or "what if your sisters chubby goth friend wanted to sit her totally untrimmed bush right on your face," a porn studio is just gonna...get someone who fits that body type. They're not gonna rewrite her as someone thin or put her in a fatsuit. And there's sizeable genres built entirely around body types that are basically banned from existing as anything more than a joke or a tragedy in mainstream film.

Where does that leave us? Do you have to love porn now? Include it in your next moodboard about positive representation? No. I understand why that level of sexualization and fetishization isn't actually comfortable for plenty of people. I'm not trying to convince you that it's good.

I'm trying to tell you that even if you have really negative feelings about gross dudes or the porn industry in general, our fucked up beauty standards for women have so much more to do with mainstream cinema than they ever have, or ever will have, to do with porn.

TToTT I feel like a geriatric when I try to interact with the Sims. I am having a fun time, but it’s all way too enmeshed with old Sims generations (yes, two has plenty of ride or dies, but one… uhh, kiiiiinda doesn’t) to be easy to chat about in the S4 community.

How’m I gonna reasonably show off the re-interpretation I made of a Sims 1 NPC? I put layers into my remake of that scantily dressed vampire. I pulled her traits from game mechanics! How can I explain the lore I’ve built her? Folks might appreciate my Tragic Clown, but nobody’s going to like sexy, hip young Mister Smith or the little kid who lives in that plane with the plane guy in Strangerville. No one will enjoy how I’ve roughly mapped some TS4 worlds out to just be parts of the TS1 neighbourhoods, or the lore improvements I want to make to the archaeology. Surely Tartosa has a proper Aarbyvillian history? Anyone wanna see my reinterpretation of Don Lothario? He’s a shitty teen living in his mom’s basement. She’s renting an illegal apartment also down there out to a strapping deadbeat who looks an aaaaaaaaawful lot like young Donny. She and her dead hubs are both also Makin’ Magic npcs. I made one of the magic realm sages a cross between Gwyneth Paltrow and Faerie Queen Mara. Mara’s ashes are in her quarters, unclear if related or murdered or both. There are a bunch of Sims 2 premades up there, too. Anyone free to giggle at the Goths’ skeleton butlers and maids, Hector, Harold, Helen, and Helga Boehn? They don’t talk about their sister Hilda - she’s a bit of a black sheep. I replaced all the maids and nannies in my game with ones from past games! That was dumb and took for-fucking-ever! Wanna see the characters I took from Midnight Hollow? Most of them are dead now. Why’s Ophelia Villa named Ophelia Villa? Well it’s haunted by three nearly identical unnamed ghosts called the Ophelias. There are a bunch more very similar women - alive, though - on a farm out in Henford. That’s kinda weird! I brought Lolita Goth back and gave her some background. It isn’t happy. I spent an entire week making pedigreed Siamese cats. They all died and got culled and now I have to re-make them because someone (me) forgot to change their flags. I played with fancier breeding trends over history, too, which was a Project. Moonwood Mill has many werewolves in it, but ALSO many regular wolves now! I incorporated the lore across relevant packs all over the place. I'm so fucking sick of being fat and undesirable I truly feel like men are not interested in me romantically purely because they want to smash the fat girl in secret but socially find her repulsive as a dating partner. I used to do avatar pictures for IMVU every once in awhile back in the day. Given, they were shit, but I still enjoyed doing so. Luckily, some of my techniques have stuck. Other than that, idk. I just do what I like.

I mainly listen to music. The music depends on what type of piece I'm doing. Example, if I'm doing some editing on a sim, I listen to music that I think that sim would listen to. It helps me put together the overall aesthetic of the piece.

Well I've only uploaded 1 thing so far, so I guess this.

Okay storytime

So in the VTuber industry pretty much every streamer is playing a character as opposed to just streaming as themselves, at least as far as I know and as far as corpo VTubers are concerned. Naturally, this means there are certain character types, like the gremlin war criminal (very chaotic, likes to prank, constant jokes about war crimes, in JP it would be Pekora), the hag (typically jokes about being old and being somewhat horny, the face of this character type is Houshou Marine) and, most importantly for this discussion, the menhera (Japanese for mental health, characterized by somewhat psychotic/schizo behaviour, like FallenShadow's parasocial dependency on her viewers, though that might be less a character and more the fact that she is literally diagnosed with schizophrenia, another great example is Uruha Rushia altho she graduated and it's kind of turning out she's also possibly mentally unstable IRL, it's kind of a coin toss weather they're playing or crazy for real).

So a while back, Hololive, the overall premiere company for corporate VTubing, announces a new wave, that is to say a new group of VTubers who passed auditions. Usually, this let's people get a peek at the models and sometimes the barest hint of the character. Shiori Novella was PRIME menhera material. Deranged look in her eyes, dressing like fucking Cruella, people were hooked immediately. 4chan especially was going wild. They could already see it, deep mommy voice, dominating personality, people were subscribing before she even had her debut stream. So, debut stream starts aaaand....

She's a squeaker. I mean it's not a particularly high pitched voice, pretty normal overall, but nowhere near the dommy goth mommy everyone envisioned. On top of that, she also isn't really much of a gamer which is basically social suicide when it comes to streaming. People start feeling super disappointed, some leave stream immediately, no way this was the menhera they were looking for. Except...

She turned it around almost INSTANTLY. Most of the time she says wild ass shit casually, other times she plays it off as slips of the tongue, rarely peters off suggestively and sometimes even says it outright, and people are LOVING IT. "I heard you wish for me to step on you, was it?" "Let's just say, whatever comes out of you will make a fine specimen." 'You wanna come at me? Let's see if I can beat you up." "I just wanted to know what people tasted like, that was it, that was it!" "You stop being an emo piece of crap, I will not tolerate (dies laughing at her own joke)" (this was about Kaneki Ken, an anime character who's her type... Who's a flesh eating ghoul, literally, and who used to hold back but embraced his fucking zombie ass behaviour when another ghoul tortured him, a la removing fingernails, putting centipedes in his ears, making full use for a ghoul's busted ass regen. Yeah....)

And like no, most of it isn't sexual, just outright nonsensical, crazy, or something people or at least idols aren't really gonna say out loud. Of course most of the time it's still regular good old jokes, but every now and then... Man. She can really say stuff out of whack. But most of the time it's just normal ass jokes. People collect her REALLY wild statements like pokemon or something idk. 4chan's VT board has a Shiori "Novella" with like idk 700 pages so far and lots of chapters, I don't read it but I pass over it every now and then with my eyes when looking for other boards to banter on.

I was reading this shitty horror novella, and one detail that really stuck out to me is that this girl main character (who wore a nightgown throughout) was surprised by her period, and out of shame took off her soiled underwear and hid them. this wasn’t her first period or anything, it just caught her off guard. which, sure, that happens. but she then proceeded to walk around the house underwearless for the rest of the novella. I was reading this like………so is she just freebleeding??? is she leaving a trail everywhere she goes? what’s happening here? is the nightgown white? is she bleeding up the place in her white nightgown while everyone else is too polite to comment on it? she has multiple conversations with other people. are they blind? do they not care? is this normal?

after I finished the book I looked up the author, and it was a cis dude. that was a big ohhhh moment. like he just didn’t know…..that he wrote a novella about a freebleeder. he didn’t know that he was creating this insanity-inducing situation with no explanation. but did his editor not know? did nobody who initially read it know? why didn’t they know? what’s happening?
