Small Farawyn things I Haven't Expressed My Feels Over Yet

Just the emotion conveyed in that single "Look at me, Eowyn!" I love that Tolkien doesn't say that Eowyn turned away or averted her gaze, probably because Faramir was getting too close to the truth of the matter. That he doesn't say she was doing it, and we only know she looked away when Faramir told her too look at him, makes it feel unconscious on her part, that she didn't know she was doing it either. Faramir needing her to face him, to look him in the eye. He's there because he needs to know if she loves him too, because he can't go on in ignorance anymore. He's desperate for clarity, and it's the one time he's almost stern with her. And Eowyn looking at him long and steadily. Even though this is emotional and painful and it requires her to be vulnerable, she meets it with courage.

"But now, were you sorrowless, without fear or any lack, were you the blissful Queen of Gondor, still I would love you. Eowyn, do you not love me?’"

The best relationships are the ones based on respect, which Faramir expresses here. However, what I really love here is how in a single sentence, Tolkien briefly creates this whole other story, this alternative narrative where Eowyn is wed to Aragorn and happily so, yet is loved by Faramir from afar. Faramir, who we know to be a much better match for her. The image that line creates is so poignant and vivid. So much pining, so much unspoken, forbidden love, packed into one sentence. Just enough to make us grateful that this future was averted, and Eowyn and Faramir did come together.

"And Éowyn said to Faramir: 'Now I must go back to my own land and look on it once again, and help my brother in his labour; but when one whom I long loved as father is laid at last to rest, I will return.'"

I've dwelled on the gender role reversals with Eowyn and Faramir, specifically in terms of courtly romances and knightly quest narratives, and this line is just another example. Traditionally, it's the man who has to leave his love behind, who has to go out and fulfil his duty before he may return to his one true love and claim his "prize". Here, it is Eowyn who has to go out and do her duty, who has to ask Faramir to wait, and has to make the promise to return to him only when her work is complete.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.

For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.

The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.

So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

cant tell you how bad it feels to constantly tell other artists to come to tumblr, because its the last good website that isn't fucked up by spoonfeeding algorithms and AI bullshit and isn't based around meaningless likes

Love the contrast between the Americans’ “Apollo” and the Soviets’ “Sputnik.” You got the Americans naming their rocket after a Greek god trying to communicate the grandness and importance of this rocket.
