The Worst Person in the World

"Everything we feel, we have to put into words. Sometimes, I just want to feel things."
This line from Julie, the protagonist in The Worst Person in the World, is so relatable to me as much as it is to many people. Like now, I'm having a hard time writing and organizing my thoughts and feelings about the film. I guess there's so much I feel and want to say but I have no clue where to begin, let alone find the right words. But I think I'll start by saying that it was a cathartic viewing experience, since many elements in the film really hit close to home.
In the very beginning, it already describes Julie's prominent attribute so well. Changing majors and sleeping with different men, her indecisiveness and tendency to move from one to another are what makes us understand her (and her understand us). But what makes Julie brave is taking control of her life by simply committing choices with no safety net, no holding back. Sometimes we delay in choosing because we are faced with the dilemma of the future -"Will this be the right choice?" But what if there's no "right" one?
It is the fear of choosing the "wrong" one that hinders us from making a choice. Our takeaway from Julie is to overcome that fear, and that it is human to be happy or sad of the choices we make. That to feel regret is inevitable.

Or maybe we feel happy, but also regret at the same time. Humans are complex emotional beings. We do not feel just one emotion at a time. Julie shows this intrinsic trait during their breakup with Aksel - that she loves him, and at the same time, does not love him. And because of that dichotomy of emotions existing at once, her love for him is not enough for her to still be with him. Also, when she had a miscarriage, tears and a smile were seen in her face showing the sadness of miscarriage and the relief of not having to raise a child.Â
Another personally relatable part in the film that I find as a confirming affirmation, but may not struck some, is this one:

"But it's not about me (...)Yeah, but it's fiction. Don't you get that?"
Whatever we create may be motivated or inspired by our life, but looking at my work does not necessarily mean that you are looking into me. Sometimes we don't want to be perceived that way, as if they automatically understand us by understanding our work. Or the other way around - when they are moved by our work because they think it's about us. I admit that I, too, am easily moved and sympathize with a film if I know it's somehow connected to the filmmaker's life. And personally, sometimes I hold back on painting something (yes feeling painter si sizt)Â because I'm afraid people will think that I'm feeling this *particular emotion they see in my work* or ask what point in my life is my work about. Yes, art is undoubtedly a form of expression but I guess the reception we want from it varies.
Also, a manifestation that everything we feel, we have to put into words is Eivind appreciating Julie's work but can't express that appreciation articulately into words. Compared to Aksel, he speaks so eloquently and analytically. Especially on this one where he really hit hard:

Record stores. I'd take the tram to Voices in GrĂŒnerlĂžkka, leaf through used comics at Pretty Price. I can close my eyes and see the aisles at Video Nova in Majorstua. I grew up in a time when culture was passed along through objects. They were interesting because we could live among them. We could pick them up. Hold them in our hands. Compare them. That's all I have. I spent my life doing that. Collecting all that stuff, comics, books, and I just continued, even when it stopped giving me the powerful emotions I felt in my early 20s. I continued anyway. And now it's all I have left. Knowledge and memories of stupid, futile things nobody cares about."
There's nothing more to explain, really. This made me feel nostalgic and activated the retrospection :'-) Exactly why I still hold on to collecting physical copies. It's like carrying a part of your life that you relished so much. The same with the people we meet, we carry at least a bit of something from them without even realizing it.Â

There's a lot of things I picked up from this film that even the nuances matter. But I don't think I can perfectly articulate everything. Sometimes, I just want to feel things.Â
But having watched the film twice now, what I know is this: We are also The Worst Person in the World - indecisive, thrill-seeking, growing, regretting. Just like Julie.

Ett sprÄk er aldri nok - More Norwegian dialects than Norwegians
A Norwegian cousin sent me this funny photo to cheer me up in my Parisian sick bed. Itâs not quite true but it did give me a good laugh and it got me thinking.
Being half-Norwegian on my motherâs side I was raised to believe the old saying, âthere are more Norwegian dialects than Norwegiansâ. This is because thereâs no âstandardisedâ Norwegian. Strictly speaking there are two quite different written languages and four mostly mutually intelligible main dialects with dozens of internal variations each. Standardised Norwegian is only used in court, official decrees and national broadcasting. The kind of Norwegian one might hear in regular, everyday life is literally subject to your current latitude and longitude.
The Norwegian dialects are divided geographically into four main groups: Ăstlandsk or Ăstnorsk (Easter Norwegian), Vestlandsk (Western Norwegian), Nordnorsk (Northern Norwegian) and TrĂžndersk (Norwegian of the TrĂžndelag county, Central Norwegian).
And just like counties comprise different cities, towns, and villages, each dialect has its own sub-groups depending on the area. Itâs safe to assume that every village or town has its own unique way of saying things, and expressions you wonât encounter anywhere else. To make things even more interesting, a sub-group of a dialect may be more similar to one of the three other main dialects than to its own.
What are a few key characteristics of each dialect?
Easter Norwegian has open vowels and is usually fast spoken. Being the dialect most similar to the one used when learning Norwegian, itâs also not considered the âstandardâ Norwegian.
People from Ăstlandet and especially from Oslo have this quite annoying habit of thinking that they speak ânormalâ or universal Norwegian, that the rest of Norway has a dialect except themselves. This is not true: as much as they write bokmĂ„l (which is highly inspired by Danish, not anything Norwegian here), people from different parts of Ăstlandet and even from Oslo use different words and pronounce things differently from each other.
For example when I go to Oslo and stay for any length of time I begin to hear the difference between the people living East and West of Akerselva (river splitting Oslo in two). Those in the East say âMajorstuaâ while the Westerners say âMajorstuenâ. Also those in the East of Oslo say âskavâ instead of âskogâ. And they drive less expensive cars. And they donât have summer houses in Barbados and winter hytte in Chamonix.Â
West Norway (Vestlandet) is fjord Norway and is an area where there is a new dialect virtually every 20 km in Vestlandet. In Bergen their ârâ is like a French ârâ, quite sharp in the throat instead of a rolling it like people in Ăstlandet.
West Norway is fjord Norway, so people were living scattered across small villages and islands, cultivating their own way of talking. But one thing you will notice, especially in Bergen, is the ârâ; it sounds like the French ârâ.
In Northern Norway (Nordnorsk), âhvâ sounds turn to âkâ, so for instance, the phrase âHva heter du?â (âWhatâs your name?â) becomes âKa du hete?â
As for the TrĂžndesk dialect in Central Norway, the personal pronouns change completely. For example, âJeg elsker degâ (âI love youâ) becomes âĂ ĂŠlske dĂŠâ in the TrĂžndesk dialect.
Why do more than two persons living in every single valley, every single piece of fjord, every piece of land surrounded by water in Norway consider they have their own very specific way of speaking?
The answer is geography. Before immigration and roads and oil and stuff Norwegians had more interaction with sheep and goats than with other Norwegians (and that is why it is called a hyrdestund). This was especially true in West Norway where people really had no contact with each other as they were each on their little island.
Norwegians just go with the flow and embrace the diversity of Norwayâs many dialects and also because itâs virtually impossible to recognise every single dialect.Â

I just follow one simple but important rule whenever I come across a dialect I donât quite get.
Make sure itâs not Swedish....
For a foreigner Swedish sounds like a funny way of speaking Norwegian or so Iâve been told.
Iâve ran into problems whenever Iâve gone to Stavanger and its Stavanger dialect. The first time I heard a guy speak Stavanger dialect I asked him where in Sweden he was from. He was not too happy about that question, especially because people from Stavanger seem to think they come from a very important place. Sure, the oil gets in from there, but keep it jantelovesque: stay humble.
Then it seems like no one is able to say which region Stavanger is located in. Is it Vestlandet? Is it SĂžrlandet? To a Northern Norwegian all of these guys are SĂžrenga, to an Oslo inhabitant all of this is just the West of Norway. So they came up with VestsĂžrlandet. No sorry, SĂžrvestlandet.
The Easter dialects that are spoken in Oslo and the one spoken close to the Swedish border are quite different from one another â with the latter sounding a lot like Swedish. So if you come across a sniffy Oslo resident just ask if they are from Sweden. See them recoil in pain as if stabbed in the heart with a bloody dagger. Itâs worth it.

VĂ„r fĂžrste uke i praksis
Hei, nÄ er vÄr fÞrste uke i praksis over. Vi har fÄtt innblikk i noe av det som skjer i Bydel St. Hanshaugen og arbeidsdagene har vÊrt veldig varierte. Bydel St. Hanshaugen har 39 000 innbyggere, som er omtrent like mange innbyggere som i en vanlig kommune. Det som gjÞr bydelen utfordrende er at den strekker seg fra Þst til vest, og det er store forskjeller mellom innbyggerne. Et av mÄlene bydelen har er Ä utjevne disse forskjellene. Bydelen har fokus pÄ folkehelse og pÄ sunn og bÊrekraftig mat. Bydel St. Hanshaugen er en av fÄ bydeler i Oslo med egen ernÊringsrÄdgiver, Lars Magnus Ottersen, han er ogsÄ vÄr praksisveileder. Lars Magnus har bachelor i samfunnsernÊring. Dette gjÞr at han vet hvilken kunnskap vi sitter pÄ og hva vi kan brukes til.

Vi har kontorplass der bydel St. Hanshaugen holder til, i Holbergs terrasse. Der har vi planlagt praksisperioden med Lars Magnus, fÄtt en omvisning og hilst pÄ de ansatte. Vi har jobbet mye med Ä forberede et Bra Mat kurs som vi skal holde for eldre pÄ Omsorg+. Vi skal ha kurs for dem hver torsdag, og hver kursdag skal vare i ca. 1 og en halv time, sÄ her har vi mye Ä forberede.

PÄ tirsdag var vi pÄ Aktivitetshuset for mennesker som sliter med rus eller psykiske lidelser. Vi serverte kyllingsalat, og pratet med alle som var innom. Her skal vi vÊre hver tirsdag.

PĂ„ torsdag var vi pĂ„ HaugenkafĂšen pĂ„ Fagerborg ungdomsskole for Ă„ lage og selge sunn og billig mat til elevene. Dere fĂ„r hĂžre mer om de ulike stedene vi har vĂŠrt pĂ„ senere ;) I dag er det fredag og hjemmekontor sĂ„ nĂ„ sitter vi pĂ„ cafĂš Pust pĂ„ Majorstua for Ă„ blogge og planlegge neste ukes aktiviteter.Â

Stortinget i MINI
De siste to ukene har vi jobbet med Ă„ fĂ„ opp en utstilling som ble holdt pĂ„ skolen pĂ„ onsdag og torsdag (4.-5. Mai). Vi er veldig fornĂžyde med resultatet; vi fikk positive og negative feedback som er gode Ă„ ha til videre refleksjoner rundt opplegget vĂ„rt. Det virket som vi oppnĂ„dde mĂ„let om Ă„ opplyse flere om hva mycelium er, og hva det har Ă„ by pĂ„, selv om noe var vanskeligere Ă„ forstĂ„ og har forbedringspotensiale!Â
En oppfriskning av oppsettet til MYCELARIUM: BestĂ„r av (1) vegger laget av mycelium-materiale (denne kan folk ta pĂ„ og se for Ă„ kjenne pĂ„ hvordan det fĂžles), (2) en skjerm som viser en live-stream av Karl Johan (for Ă„ se hvor mye trafikk det er), (3) et tak med en live projeksjon av folks fĂžtter (fordi mycelium kan fĂžle hvor folk trĂ„kker), og til slutt (4) et lite stativ med brosjyrer folk kan ta med seg hjem <3 Til sammen fire elementer.Â
Vi hadde satt sammen et tak vi kunne projektere fĂžttene pĂ„ til prototypen vĂ„r av utstillingen, og testet dette med noen i klassen. Etter fĂžrste test fikk vi tilbakemelding pĂ„ at det var litt vanskelig Ă„ forstĂ„ at man skulle se opp, og at det var noe i taket i det hele tatt. SĂ„ i et forsĂžk pĂ„ Ă„ tydeliggjĂžre dette enda mer bestemte vi oss for Ă„ lage en modell i mindre skala som skulle vise akkurat hvor i Stortinget T-bane Mycelarium skal vĂŠre plassert.Â

Da vi skulle teste modellen med en projektor innsĂ„ vi at projektoren ikke kunne stĂ„ loddrett, og at den mĂ„tte stĂ„ pĂ„ skrĂ„ kunne ikke lyset prosjektere midt pĂ„ modellen, som vi hadde planlagt. Taket ville nĂ„ kun vises pĂ„ den ene siden, som var litt kjipt fordi den andre siden kom nĂ„ til Ă„ stĂ„ tom.Â
