Autumn and winter is a RUBBISH time for my love of solarpunk to be rekindled, because so much of what I can act on is guerrilla gardening. Alas, here I am, getting back to my solarpunk roots.

Do you have any suggestions for solarpunk activities we can work on in the cold months?

God I feel for this!!! Winter always feels like such a festering time to be in love with solarpunk. Not to mention how starved we are for winter content for solarpunk and lunarpunk in general. But yeah!! Here's some ideas to do in winter!!!

Out and about:

There are a lot more social clubs in your city then you'd expect! I know 2 different community associations in my city that have social clubs that go in adult field trips (like to farms and cafes ans boardgame places!!)! And have crafting clubs! And the best part is if their in your community, it's within a decent walk of you but it's almost always walkable!

Using a library!! For anything! Everything! In my provenance we got a saying "Use it or they

Graffiti- leaving kind messages or fun stickers all over the place isn't really a weather restricted activity for the most part. I know someone who made a Playlist filled with union songs and rebellion songs and put a code for it and links to how to unionize on stickers and did that.

Adopt a stop- more cities have these then you might think! But adopt a stop programs basically let you take care of a certain bus stop and this lets you add things (like good benches, shoveling and removing ice, asking the city to add heaters, etc..) you become the advocate for that bus stop. If your city doesn't have a program like it yet you can ask your city or community to start one since it saves a bunch of money on maitance costs!

At home:

Archiving and pirating - highly recommend doing it in a physical sense if you can afford it. Bc then you can give them out as gifts!

Create!! - Sewing, sewing for friends, knitting gloves/scarfs for ppl who might need it, make art to inspire others via writing or drawing or other mediums! Gift economies require gifts after all so make some!

Learn! - learning a new skill, like canning or how to install solarpanels. Researching in general, but also keeping up to date with local politics and what you can do on the ground there. Building up knowledge is such as useful even if it doesn't feel like your doing anything.

Connect! - Shoveling neighbors walkways, or in general connecting with the ppl in your immediate surroundings! They can help you out in ways you couldn't imagine, someone didn't bake often so they gave me 15lbs of flour!! And their extra pair of snow boots, I hadn't had snow boots since I was 12 years old and it meant the world to me. The pizza I taught her daughter to make and a cheap meal for them meant the world for them. These small acts really are what tie each other together.

Plan! - plan for next year, what kind of equipment can you gather? What do you wanna accomplish next growing season? Seed swaps are also a fun thing I know ppl will do in winter as they start preserving food!

Ah, really it was all the work of my wonderful amazing mother! In all honesty, I would never be even CLOSE to being this happy if it wasn't for her and everything she did to keep me safe and let me transition. Short answer: I got lucky with living in the transgender shield of New York because my parents are rad and moved us up there

Long answer: Quite a few things actually! For starters, I was lucky enough to live in a state that allowed it, and I had proof of being dysphoric from a young age through therapy records and mental health checks. (<- not Necessary, but definitely helped my case! the government LOVESS the mentally ill lmfao) Really when medically transitioning, you need a few things on a list.

1: A letter of recommendation from a therapist (I've been through Several, so no problem there! Just need proof from a mental health professional that you are who you say you are, and you're not going to regret the change)

2: A letter from your general practioner/medical provider, signing off on the surgery (this will actually happen Several Times. but you need one to start off the whole thing)

3: If you're a minor, proof that you're fully developed puberty-wise, through a physical exam with your doctor!

Then, you take all of those to a plastic surgeon. I had an amazing doctor that took wonderful care of me and did a perfect job with the surgery, and I'd really recommend doing a metric shit-ton of research on whatever surgeon you end up choosing! The best bet most often is whatever other trans people recommend. This surgeon will then sign off on it, and you'll book some dates. In my case, there was 2 pre-op meetings! One where they looked at my chest and decided on the best procedure to use, and one where they had my mother fill out consent forms and book the date of the final surgery. (Again, assuming it's a minor like me going through this process, it's likely they haven't been through a surgery before! So there might be one more appointment with a doctor where they check your general muscle strength and how well you'll recover from the anesthetic/surgery in general. Really easy check-up, that typically functions as a less invasive physical)

It's a long, time consuming process that's very fuckin expensive lmao, but I promise you it's worth it. It's so very very worth it. I could go into all the little details of every step of the process and all the hoops I jumped through, but it can and will vary from person to person! Again, I just got very very very goddamn lucky with a family that supports me and was willing to help me as much as they have. Im the luckiest guy on the planet I'm pretty sure. Everyday I get to wake up in the body I've always wanted to have and feel amazing about it.

yoga is tomura's "me time" (i guess technically "we time" bc it's feat. papa toshi) so i don't think he ever asks you to come with him, and frankly i don't think you ask either, because you know it's something he likes to do on his own.

i do think that there's a great opportunity for him to do some.... private coaching.... with you though.

Okay so the AU that got me into the concept of Athena was Hal taking over the tiaratop from Condy and feeling really weird but not in a bad way about it. Basically, until he can undo the effects, Hal is now in Jane's body. The AU was called Halice in Wonderland and it was an amazing idea I think. Also I'm not normal at all about this pair of shades.

so my culture is VERY anti-mending bc of reasons (torn/mended clothing brings poverty or some bs, im not following it but my parents are very strict) and i have little chance of even being able to go to the library much less participate

so all i can really do is gather resources, which is really disheartening since, yk, im two years away from moving out and 2 years is a long time for a teen like me

i guess im really just asking for affirmation since i can do next to nothing and i kinda feel bad for calling myself solarpunk bc it just feels like the anger at the system is festering and kinda hurting me since i cant DO anything

and all i can do is wait and watch as the world feels like its going to shit bc of climate change and people hurting each other bc theyre different

and i honestly hate actually gardening even though i like the idea of it (or maybe im just too burnt out to put any effort into anything idk)

im not sure what else to say, sorry about the vent/asking for affirmation

Hey I hear ya! There's a lot of stigma around mending and the ability to interact with our groups irl given the way our system is currently built is extra hard!

This doesn't devalue what you do, doesn't mean your wants and values mean any less just bc society and current situation are literally built to keep you isolated.

The thing is, we have to find where we can and sometimes that means all we can do is daydream or read or nit take physical action.

And that is super duper tough. To be so far from the end of the tunnel that you honestly can't see the light. The big thing is that we inspire each other so that we can wax and wane as needed!

I was once a "useless lazy" teen who only daydreamed of earthships and solarpanels. And now I'm on the board for my community. Writing grants and emails to get food at events so kids can come and so we'll known in my community I can't go on walks with headphones in bc ppl wanna chat. But even if I had never done any of it, my value as a person isn't diminished and I'd still proudly be solarpunk. And so, even if you do nothing the rest of your life, you are too.

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT GOOOOD MORNING here r some quick stuff i wrote down regarding cats/what to do when approaching one ! Wrote it all in the metro in a lil rush so there might be stuff i missed ;w;

Also I received some Qs regarding cats and rabies etc in the past too so I added a quick smt abt that at the end (my point still stands tho, cats are easier to maintain and take care of, so usually fellow neighborhood cats don’t carry (many?) diseases but if you have a weak immune system it doesn’t hurt to be vary of these possibilities too. (I for one just dig in for the belly rubs and pull my hand back before the cat can do a painful paw movement at me lmao, I’m too at ease w them…)

Oh and! If you see a street cat w the left ear chipped off a lil, that means the cat has been castrated. and! Three colored cats (white orangeish black) are always females (the three color pattern can be presented with the presence of two X chromosomes) while yellow tabbies are usually males (~90%)
