Black Moon Lilith operates on unseen levels. It pertains to hidden information, exposes secrets, and brings our core and primary fears to light. Fears from our shadow side cause us to undermine ourselves, and even others. Black Moon Lilith is the lingering feeling that stabs your consciousness and triggers you; If you don't listen to it, you'll grow vicious and paranoid of others and yourself.

My interpretation of the shadow is that it is the home of our primal fear. A fear that has significant power in our lives. It is based on primal, instinctual levels and operates on survival principles. The primary fear is a primary motivator for many of our life decisions.

In this way we are assured of not being alone. This distorted sense of support wreaks havoc on relationships, as others feel burdened or smothered. Many times with the Black Moon in Cancer we feel unappreciated for the things we do for others. Healing and Transcending: 

The dependence on others for support must be faced. We must provide our own support by not abandoning ourselves. This means taking care of and addressing our own needs. Healing and Transcending: 

With the Black Moon in Virgo, the need to find fault must be faced. A healthier state of mind is achieved when we recognize that nothing is absolute – there is no absolute right or wrong. All levels of ability have something to contribute. Healing this shadow requires understanding that flaws are an illusion. The crucial thing to understand is that when we have the Black Moon in Virgo, we interpret the feeling of separation from Spirit as somehow our fault. To heal the shadow, we must accept that to some degree, this feeling is merely a by-product of the physical experience of life. 

Examine where you feel you have failed. Upon closer inspection, what caused the “failure?” Was it really your fault? Was there really more you could have done or was it just not meant to be? Can you forgive yourself and others for not doing better? 

Can you walk away from “failures” and feel enriched simply by having had the experience? Time is the true test of what is, at the time, perceived to be a failure. By focusing on the experience as opposed to the outcome, the shadow of ability is healed.

This shadow involves pursuit of the “ideal” and keenly feels the separation from spirit. The Black Moon in Libra manifests in intense self-judgment and fragmentation of the self into pieces that are either acceptable or unacceptable. This shadow breaches boundaries and sorts through everything in an attempt to perfect it. It seeks excellence. This results in an unending series of disappointments and can form schisms in relationships. Maintaining any semblance of perfection is exhausting for anyone, but with the Black Moon in Libra, we often find ourselves complaining about being tired or not having enough time. Indecisiveness and self-deprivation are also characteristic of this shadow. 

Healing and Transcending: 

With the Black Moon in Libra, the need to judge must be faced. This shadow is strongly connected to the journey through the judgment of the Underworld and subsequent rebirth in a whole new way (see Chapter Five on the transits of the Black Moon). It is actually a journey to find what is truly of value. When we are able to see that love is truly the only thing of value, we find inclusion instead of separation. We begin to love all of the parts, not just some of them. When we understand that everything is connected, we see that the fear of separation is an illusion. Healing the shadow of perfection is about seeing our own (and others‟) inner perfection by allowing the “ideals” of the outer, material world to fall away. 

Assess your values. When you find yourself being critical of others, ask yourself if you dislike that same thing in yourself. Examine how you separate yourself from other people. Is there a need to keep some part of you distinct from others? 

When you find yourself being critical, find something valuable about the situation. You might not feel like certain things about you or others are perfect in appearance, but you may find that they are highly valuable in functionality. By practicing finding value, the shadow that believes in the idea of perfection is healed.

Black Moon in the 7th House 

Challenges: The greatest challenges of the shadow are related to partnerships and commitment. This shadow side is urgently motivated to seek mutually-fulfilling relationships, which are often elusive. Also, other people find ways to take advantage of us, sometimes to the point of betrayal. Many times life seems unfair to us and others would probably agree. In the midst of this, there can also be issues of dependence or neediness. 

Gift: The gift of the shadow is our ability to perceive and create beauty from the smallest things. Innately tuned toward balance, we easily see what is missing and then endeavor to rectify the situation. This is a very valuable skill that can be translated into many different applications.

SCORPIO: fear of loss

Goals: to not always have to win, to learn how to have closure, to not have to rescue, to not struggle so hard

The Black Moon in Scorpio manifests as a deep well of despair with desperate attempts to climb out. We cling or attach to anything that stems the feeling of free-falling through life. Daily life is frequently viewed as a battle to win in order to stave off deepening feelings of loss. Sometimes even casual encounters are judged according to what was won or lost in the exchange. Take steps to practice ending the smallest things (like phone calls) and work up to being able to step away from situations that cannot be saved (like dead end relationships). You may be surprised to find that something else was waiting all along - you just couldn’t see it while you were busy running away from it. This is the nature of death or endings. They always precede rebirth and beginnings.

Themes of deception often play a role in our lives, perhaps as a victim of deception. Ongoing questions about not only our purpose in life, but the purpose of life characterize this shadow. With the Black Moon in Sagittarius, the need to continue searching must be faced. At some point, one must simply believe. When you know the answers to this question, you will have created truth – the truth according to you. Devotion of your life to your own truth heals the shadow that never believes that truth really exists.

We have definite ideas about the way things should be and others often succumb to the force of our will. Frequently we refuse to give up until someone – anyone - acknowledges what we have to offer or agrees with what we think is best. A little bit of recognition goes a long way with us, but so does a little bit of neglect, and Black Moon in Capricorn has a long memory. But interpersonal relationships suffer when we wear down another free will to come into compliance with our own. This results in lackluster relationships where the joyful spark of life becomes extinguished. We are very hard workers, but we can also expect a lot from others. 

Healing and Transcending: 

With the Black Moon in Capricorn, we need to examine what we are trying to control. We also need to give ourselves the recognition we seek. When we are able to do this, there is no longer a drive to ensure that others follow our wishes because we already have what we need. 

Examine where you need to have your way. Observe yourself carefully. Are you telling someone how, when, or what to do? Practice allowing others to go about tasks in their own way.

Healing and Transcending: 

With the Black Moon in Aquarius, the tendency to overpower others must be faced. When we recognize that we are all connected, there is no need for anyone to overpower another. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses that fluctuate and change over time. The extra boost of power that accompanies Black Moon in Aquarius can be re-routed back into the collective of humanity in the form of brilliant ideas and creations that uplift the whole. A channel or outlet for this power is what is needed to keep it from blowing up. When the focus shifts to sharing power, all benefit. 

Examine if you abuse your power by neglecting or criticizing others. Do you take advantage of others, however unwittingly? Or do you neglect, criticize, or overextend yourself? 

Ask yourself what you would do with all of your power. It is very important for you to answer this question. Are you more afraid of your power or your powerlessness? Discerning the parameters of personal power is what heals this shadow.

Gift: The gift of the shadow is the ability to bring people together. We are natural networkers. We are also interesting people to be around and are true innovators.

PISCES: fear of vulnerability/harm

Theme: The Shadow of Trust 

Primary Fear: fear of vulnerability 

Self-judgment: based on how stable ones emotions are 

Issues: trust issues 

Projection: distrust of people who are “too nice” because they must want something 

Goals: to let down your walls with the appropriate people, to be able to discern who is appropriate for you, to focus on self as much as others 

Manifestation: 

The Black Moon in Pisces is tender-hearted. We are afraid that if others discover this, they will use it against us. There is a tendency to judge people and situations based on the potential of being hurt. We may find it difficult to be open or fully intimate with others. It is often hard to trust others and we test them until we feel safe. This shadow can show up overtly (in unmistakable emotional walls) but it can also show up subtly (appearing on the surface to be very open, but upon closer inspection having definite commitment issues). On the flip side, we can also make commitments before trust is gained. By prematurely trusting, we face betrayal or disappointment. In this way, a vague sense of safety is maintained since a deeper sense of intimacy is never attained. The sense of being separated from Spirit is acute with Black Moon in Pisces and the intense desire to not be present in the “here and now” can lead to emotional addictions, addiction to substances, or escaping our own issues through focusing on others. 

Healing and Transcending:

With the Black Moon in Pisces, the need to put up a wall of protection must be faced. The truth is, life can be painful and people hurt us whether they intend to or not. We need to learn to trust the people we know we can trust. Usually this is the person we are with the most, but proportionately open up to the least. We tend to hold ourselves back, but this is a crime against our souls because we are naturally closest to Spirit and have much to share with others. Our shadow is healed when we trust that we are strong enough to withstand any offense. 

Ask yourself when you feel most vulnerable. In what situations do you cross your arms and cover your chest? How do you cover up or cover over who you really are? 

Consider who you physically, intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally open up to the most? It is important to look at the level of trust you have in the people around you and honestly assess if your trust is well-placed. Balancing the shadow of trust is just as much about not placing trust in the people that you know you shouldn’t as it is about allowing someone else see who you really are.

We may have a degree of emotional suffering that is not evident to others until they get to know us. 

Gift: The gift of the shadow is our ability to empathize with others. We seem to easily give to others that which we may not be able to give to ourselves. We are complex people who can handle complex tasks and material with aplomb.

I want women actively to resist, to refrain from cooperating with men, to cease making our resources available to men who are likely to then use against us what they have taken. I want men to be ‘irrelevant’ to our enterprise of constructing our own knowledge; I do not want them ‘revered’. I am advocating non-violent non co-operation.

It is ironic that it is Mahatma Gandhi who is held up as the originator of this method of resistance. Elizabeth Sarah informs me that in 1906 he visited Britain and on his own ready admission stated that it was from the suffragettes that he learned the power of non co-operation. As they refused to pay fines and were imprisoned, as they refused to acknowledge the authority of the law or its makers, as they ‘invented’ the method of hunger striking they revealed that a group defined as powerless, excluded from political participation (for they were kept out of meetings), were able to exert a great deal of power. They were able to act and the oppressor had to react. The oppressor could change his ways or he could show that his rule is maintained by force, but either way his ideology that the oppressed are content with their lot is seriously challenged.

As males cannot be authorities on women's experiences, what they make of this thesis does not much matter; but as they possess enormous power what does matter is what they can take and use. I have tried to practise what I preach and to provide them with as little as possible. I cannot condone violence against the enemy, but I can withdraw my labour from the exploiter and will not be swayed by the argument that he has more rights, that his interest is greater, his authority more legitimate.

I do not believe that women are now of age so that it is perfectly in order for us to start criticising (attacking, condemning, demolishing, deriding) each other in public forums, for I know, as women have found again and again, that our words will be taken down and used as evidence against us. We play into men's hands when we represent our sex negatively; we oblige them by doing some of their work for them. I know we are perfectly capable of generating our own valid meanings and I know that we do not all agree. I even know that I will never agree with some women; but my 'criticisms' are in private until the view of a woman carries the same weight as a man's, and is not just the raw data for his patriarchal products. While the world is arranged as it is I choose to assert my intellectual and creative existence as a woman and to promote a positive representation of women's lives, values, and ideas. Let men do what they will with this.

N 1932, A JAMAICAN MAN NAMED LEONARD PERCIVAL HOWELL began leading nonviolent protests in Kingston, Jamaica, against British colonial rule. While history books rightly credit Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. with popularizing nonviolent protest strategies in later years, little is known about Leonard Howell and his vision of self-reliance―poor people working together to build a society of their own.

When Howell first started preaching on street corners in Kingston, he was immediately perceived as "seditious," and he became a target for police harassment. Howell soon founded an organization called the Ethiopian Salvation Society. His idea was to add a religious element to Marcus Garvey's message of African independence. Although Christian values were part of his belief system, he decided to make a break from the Christian interpretation of the Bible and extend the idea of divinity to a living man, Emperor Haile Selassie I, who had been crowned king of Ethiopia in 1930.

Jamaican journalists coined a name for the group: the "Ras Tafarites," or "Rastas."

Howell was arrested several times and was eventually found guilty of sedition and sentenced to prison for two years of hard labor. In 1940, Howell and his growing group of followers moved to an old estate in the parish of St. Catherine. They named their land Pinnacle, and for the next sixteen years built a self-reliant community that would ultimately give birth to the Rastafari movement.

In 1942, Leonard Howell's wife Tenneth gave birth to their second child, who they named Bill.

In Pinnacle: The Lost Paradise of Rasta, Bill "Blade" Howell offers his firsthand account of this utopian community that suffered near-constant persecution from Jamaican authorities.

Howell also dispels many misguided notions about the origins of Rastafari culture, including allegations of sexism and homophobia.

Pinnacle was built on egalitarian principles, and steered clear of all religious dogma.

Pinnacle: The Lost Paradise of Rasta provides a crucial and highly informed new perspective on the Rastafari subculture that Bob Marley would later help to spread across the globe.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I had a very good spring break week. I will miss volunteering at the mission, but hopefully I will spend time there over the summer in between camp, the summer trip, and my ballet intensive. This summer will be another busy one, but I still have 44 days left of studies and should focus on them to not get too far ahead of myself.

I am really enjoying the book I am reading. It is a little creepy, but that almost makes me want to read more so I can learn about the mystery of what is going on! The sequel was on my reading list for this year, so I had to read this one first so I understood any new information in the next book. Dwarka and Ahmedabad Trip - Family Travel form Korba Chhattisgarh

As I packed my bags at my residence in Korba, Chhattisgarh, I felt a thrill within me. This tour was not just a simple vacation; it was a family trip meant to unite relatives from all corners. Our destination was the sacred town of Dwarka and the bustling city of Ahmedabad.

Setting Off from Korba

The day was just breaking when the family embarked on the trip. Loading my bags into the car, I felt emotions of excitement and anticipation. The journey to Bilaspur from Korba was familiar, yet each trip had its own story. Along the highways, we passed green plantations and small-scale farms that dotted the landscape.

In about an hour and a half, we reached Bilaspur, where my relatives from Bhilai joined us. It was like an informal family gathering in the parking lot. After a quick meal together at a nearby hotel, we headed to the railway station to catch our train to Dwarka.

The Train Journey: A Time for Bonding

The train journey was filled with fun and shared stories. The energy within the group was high as we traveled from the territory of Chhattisgarh to Gujarat. Along the way, we spotted beautiful peacocks and wind turbines. The home-cooked Chhattisgarhi dishes we’d brought turned into a communal feast, enhancing the bond between family members.

As evening arrived, I watched the sunset in Gujarat, noting how the sun lingered longer than it would back home. Spending this time with positive, cheerful relatives in beautiful surroundings made the journey unforgettable.

Arriving in Dwarka

After a night on the train, we arrived in Dwarka, greeted by the early morning sunlight on the ancient temples. We checked into our hotel, where my grandparents chose to rest while the rest of us headed to the Dwarkadhish temple. Walking through the throngs of devotees, the temple's intricate sculptures left us all spellbound, and the sense of peace within its walls was overwhelming.

The next day, we visited Bet Dwarka, a small island accessible by ferry. The kids were excited, and we bought real pearls with plans to make earrings for family members. This island, believed to be Lord Krishna's first residence, held great historical significance. We explored its temples and beaches, soaking in the spiritual and natural beauty of the place.

In the afternoons, we wandered through vibrant markets, sampling local crafts and delicious food. I made sure to pack some native dishes, including fish and dried fish, to bring home. In the evenings, we gathered as a family, sharing stories over meals at small dhabas, creating memories over shared plates.

Journey to Ahmedabad and Exploring the City

After a few days in Dwarka, we set out for Ahmedabad, a scenic drive across Gujarat. Upon arrival, we checked into our hotel and set off to explore the city. Our first stop was Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived for many years. Walking through the peaceful surroundings, I felt a renewed sense of respect for the man who had left such a lasting impact on Indian history.

That evening, we visited the bustling night market at Manek Chowk. I found myself drawn to the hot and salty street food, steering clear of the sweet Gujarati flavors that don't quite suit my taste. But dining together under the market's bright lights made the evening perfect.

Cultural Experiences and Wildlife Adventure

The next day, we explored Ahmedabad's architectural and cultural landmarks, including the beautiful Adalaj Stepwell. This Indo-Islamic architectural marvel, with its shaded steps, offered a cool respite from the heat.

Afterward, we went to a water park, where we were surprised to see Raftaar, who was performing at a concert that evening. Meeting him added an unexpected thrill to the day!

The following day, we continued our adventure with a trip to Gir National Park, home to the majestic Asiatic lions. The safari through the park was a thrilling experience as we spotted not only lions but also other wildlife, including deer and exotic birds. The raw beauty of the forest and the excitement of spotting animals up close made it a memorable addition to our trip.

Coming Home

On our journey back to Korba, the car was filled with animated conversations about the trip’s highlights and the question of when we’d have our next family gathering. This trip was about much more than just visiting new places; it was about being with loved ones and creating memories that would stay with us for years.

As I unpacked my bags at home, I felt fulfilled by the laughter and experiences we had shared. This journey from Korba to Dwarka, Ahmedabad, and Gir National Park left me eagerly awaiting our next family adventure, knowing that travel is truly enriched by the company we keep.

WHY IS IT STILL USED OR EVEN CONSIDERED IMPORTANT TO THE STORY? Why the FUCK did the games make it such a big deal that Desmond had such a high sync rate when they can *apparently* use someone else's blood to see the memories of their ancestors?)

Oh! And don't forget it was previously established that only certain people could use them without going insane! Because the writers sure as shit did.)

Their employment has therefore had immense impacts on human history; some of the most influential leaders such as Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Mahatma Gandhi were aided by their use of a Piece of Eden. (???? wasn't there a whole codex page about how Altaïr felt conflicted at killing Genghis Khan once he realized that humans had the potential to do great harm to each other without the PoE? Becuase he didn't? Have one when Altaïr killed him? Or was that yet another retcon later on?)

The contest for the Pieces of Eden between the Templars and their archenemies, the Assassins, who traditionally seek to safeguard them, has been a hallmark of their millennia long war. (hey, remember when Desmond had that badass sequence where he raids the Abstergo base to save his dad, killing people left and right with his blades and apple of Eden? And no one said anything about the fact that he, an Assassin, used a PoE the same way templars do? And treated the event like it was insignificant? This girlie does!)

Some Pieces of Eden were known to interact with and change the passage of time, possibly creating paradoxes. Others were able to "speak" to those who wielded them, as was the case with Ezio Auditore, Perotto Calderon and Giovanni Borgia, who spoke with Ezio's Apple and the Shroud.[2][5]

When activated, Apples of Eden are capable of extending a pulse of energy that can drive those in the surrounding area to insanity and death. Doing so has a detrimental effect on the physical health of the wielder if they are unskilled in the Apples' use, but a capable user is not as easily afflicted.[6] Altaïr, for example, was able to use Apple #2 for a limited duration without adverse affects at age 92.[7] Using the Pieces' powers in short bursts can also minimize the negative effects dealt by the artifacts, though to what extent is unknown.[1]

Destruction of a Piece

Following the destruction of Apple of Eden #2 during an experiment at the Denver International Airport, the Templars found themselves in need of another artifact with similar properties. Seeking access to a map that indicated the location of all Pieces of Eden, Abstergo kidnapped Desmond Miles in order to view the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. This would allow them to see the very same map that Altaïr discovered in 1191.[3]

Each of the Pieces of Eden contained a great deal of potential energy, and the destruction of one could cause an explosion on the scale of a nuclear blast. One such explosion occurred in 1908, in the region of Tunguska, Russia. The Imperial Sceptre, one of the Staves of Eden, was seemingly destroyed when Nikola Tesla fired at the Tunguska facility with his wireless electric weapon, attempting to strike a blow against the Templars.[1][3][8]

However, the blast failed to totally destroy the Staff, and at least one shard remained.[9] The Staff shard still possessed powers of mind control, as demonstrated by Grigori Rasputin. While he was in possession of the shard, he brainwashed Alexandra Feodorovna, the wife of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, as well as several disciples like Khioniya Guseva.[2]

Altaïr deactivating an Apple

Although the Isu created humanity to be susceptible to the Pieces of Eden, eventual cross-breeding between them and their slaves led to the birth of a hybrid species. These new humans possessed some of the natural abilities of their creators and were free of the neurotransmitter necessary for the Pieces of Eden to control them.[1]

The first two known hybrids were Adam and Eve, who later stole one of the Apples of Eden and instigated the Human-Isu War.[1] Members of their lineage inherited these natural abilities and immunity to the Pieces, although the Pieces' ability to physically manipulate them remained.[3] These traits were passed down through generations to the likes of Altaïr, Ezio and Desmond.[1]

By the early 21st century, the Templars were aware that some humans were immune to the Pieces' mind control. On at least one occasion, Dr. Warren Vidic received an email from an individual unaffected by the Apple's power, who threatened to expose what they had seen when an Apple was used on others.[3] (this is also another thing i have issue with: is it only people who have Isu DNA that can resist? can anyone with a strong willpower resist? what makes one susceptible to them when literally anyone can use them, but some people go crazy)

Susi Newborn — one of the most skilled and effective activists in Greenpeace’s 52-year history — passed away on the last day of December 2023. She is remembered fondly by her beloved children, Brenna, Woody, and Naawie; her granddaughter Toody; by her ex-husbands, Martini Gotje and Luc Tutugoro; and by friends, colleagues, and shipmates around the world. 

In 1977, when Susi arrived in Canada for her first Greenpeace action, to protect infant harp seal pups in Newfoundland, she was already something of a legend. Journalistic tradition would have me refer to her as “Newborn,” a name that rang with significance, but I can only think of her as Susi, the tough, smart activist from London. 

Susi was born in London in 1950, from Argentine parents. Her mother had grown up among the Buenos Aires elite and knew famous artists such as Raul Soldi and Mexican muralist Don Sequeiros. Susi’s godmother was a founding member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in the UK, and a colleague of Bertrand Russell. Susi grew up meeting writers, philosophers, and artists. 

Susi’s father was an Argentine Embassy diplomat, whom she described as “a deeply spiritual man.” He told her about meeting Mahatma Gandhi and urged her to “work for peace.” At the age of five, she stopped her father from chopping down a tree near their London home, her first ecology action, and in 1970, at the age of 20, she attended the world’s first Earth Day protest in London’s Trafalgar Square.

Argentina at the time suffered under a series of military dictators, and Susi’s father quietly opposed the Junta headed by General Alejandro Agustín Lanusse. When her father died, the tragedy radicalised her and she embarked “on a personal journey of activism.”

Hosting the film star

Susi worked for Friends of the Earth in London for two years, and in the summer of 1975 she attended the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in London, where she met Greenpeace members Paul and Linda Spong. Greenpeace Foundation in Canada had spent two years planning our first global ecology action, after protesting US and French nuclear weapons tests for four years. We were tracking Russian whalers off the coast of California in a fishing boat, and our campaign depended on confronting the whalers during this London IWC meeting. 

Paul and Linda Spong informed Susi about the planned confrontation, and she helped organise London ecologists and media for the coming drama. In June, two days before the IWC meeting would close, we located and blockaded the whalers. The next day, we announced the confrontation by marine radio; and Susi, Paul, Linda, Greenpeace filmmaker Michael Chechik, and a team of activists stormed the IWC meeting with the news. 

In 1976, Susi met Greenpeace co-founder Bob Hunter in London. Hunter returned to Vancouver with tales of “the amazing Susi Newborn” in London. He called her “a hard-core, grassroots ecologist who could help lead the next generation of Greenpeace actions in Europe.” Six months later, she arrived in Canada to participate in a campaign to halt the slaughter of infant seals on the Labrador ice floes. Susi told me that the direct action tactics and Earthy spiritual style of Greenpeace appealed to her. 

In May 1977, Susi pitched her tent on icy Belle Isle, 32 kilometres off the coast of Labrador, surrounded by ice floes, awaiting the arrival of the Norwegian sealing ships. Susi and David “Walrus” Garrick explored frozen caves and wrote a “Declaration of Freelandsea,” a free-spirited manifesto of ecology.

Three days after Susi and the Greenpeace team pitched camp on the ice, French actress Brigitte Bardot arrived to help bring attention to the Norwegian infant seal slaughter. Bardot wrote in her account that she had been “terrified” flying through a storm in the helicopter, and she arrived at the camp stifling tears and clutching her frozen fingers under her arms. Susi made her a cup of hot chocolate, warmed her in the tent, and explained practical tips such as how a woman could pee at night on frozen Belle Isle. “They give me courage,” Bardot wrote in her journal. 

Rainbow Warrior

Back in London, Susi next wanted to disrupt Icelandic whaling. She recruited Denise Bell from Friends of the Earth and set out to find a boat to confront the whalers in the North Atlantic. I sent her a file of photographs from the nuclear, whale, and seal campaigns. Like us in Canada, Susi had no money. She started fundraising, using Michael Chechik’s documentary film of the first two whale voyages, which was aired on the BBC with an introduction by British naturalist David Attenborough.  Susi and Denise met Charles Hutchinson from London and Allan Thornton from Canada, and the group opened the first Greenpeace office in the UK at 47 Whitehall Street. Simultaneously, French activist Rémi Parmentier and Canadian David McTaggart opened another office in Paris, where they were protesting French nuclear testing in the South Pacific.

Susi and Denise Bell scoured maritime journals, looking for ships for sale. On the Isle of Dogs, in the Thames Docklands, they found a rusting, diesel-electric, 134-foot trawler that had been converted to a research ship by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food. The Sir William Hardy was available to the highest bidder. Charles Hutchinson introduced them to the manager at Lloyds of Pall Mall bank. They received a bank loan, secured by the life insurance policies of Hutchinson and Bell. The Department of Trade accepted their bid of £42,725, and they put down a 10 percent deposit, £4,272, on the ship. This was the first ship that Greenpeace actually owned, and Susi sent us photographs of the sad looking trawler that within a decade would become one of the most famous ships of the 20th century. 

Newborn, Bell, and an army of volunteers cleaned the ship, stem to stern. Susi recruited her childhood friend Athel von Koettlitz and Australian boyfriend Chris Robinson to tackle the restoration. They clambered down into the pitch-black engine room with a flashlight. The hovel was a rust bucket, and the 800-horsepower engine had not been fired in years. They wiped moisture off gauge glass, tightened loose fittings, and got the two-stroke diesel engine running. Susi and the team removed trawling gear, scraped off rust, painted the ship, and shopped for second-hand parts.

In the fall of 1977, they negotiated with the Ministry to reduce the final price of the Sir William Hardy to £32,500, about £182,000 today. To raise this money, they toured Europe with the documentary, The Voyage to Save the Whales. In the Netherlands, the World Wildlife Fund financed a fundraising campaign. Bob and Bobbi Hunter departed for Amsterdam to accept the money for Greenpeace. On the way, they stopped in London to see the new ship, and there Bob Hunter gave Susi a copy of Warriors of the Rainbow, a book that had inspired Greenpeace in Canada, with a prophecy about how all the people of world — people of the rainbow — would come together to save the Earth from ruin. The crew later agreed to rename the ship Rainbow Warrior. The crew added rainbows to the ship’s deep green hull, a white dove copied from the book cover, and painted Rainbow Warrior at the bow, the vessel’s glorious new name.

Whales and nuclear waste

Susi saw Greenpeace as an integration of ecology, the Gandhian satyagraha she had learned from her father, Quaker direct action, and a deep respect for Indigenous Earth-informed spirituality. She was naturally inclusive and realised that the hard-edged punks of London appreciated ecology as much as the hippies, peace activists, and affluent conservationists. She recruited nuclear campaigner Peter Wilkinson, who had grown up around the South London docks, and had good relations with the dockworker unions, whom he convinced to “turn a blind eye” to the non-union Greenpeace team working on the ship. Susi built alliances with everyone. “Our gut reactions to injustice are the same,” she told her colleagues. 

By January 1978, the Rainbow Warrior was ready for its first ecological campaign, and on 2 May, they slipped down the Thames and into the North Sea. The seasoned crew included skipper Nick Hill; chief mate Jon Castle; Peter Bouquet, a mate off a tanker; cameraman Tony Mariner; and Von Koettlitz assisting Chief engineer Simon Hollander. Devonshire nurse Sally Austin served as medic, Hilari Anderson from New Zealand as cook. Bob Hunter and Fred Easton joined the crew from the Greenpeace Foundation in Canada. Remi Parmentier and David McTaggart joined from the Paris office; and Bell, Hutchinson, Thornton and Susi Newborn form the UK core of the crew. Others came from Holland, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, and Australia. 

Crowds welcomed the ecologists in Calais, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Aarhus, Denmark, where Susi and the crew showed films from earlier Greenpeace missions. Greenpeace organisations emerged in some of these cities. Susi understood that to spread the ideas of peace and ecology we needed to not only take action, but also build the movement itself.

The Rainbow Warrior crew confronted Icelandic whalers, then put into Reykjavik to release film to the media. Pete Wilkinson joined the crew in the UK and told Susi he had found evidence that the European nuclear industry was dumping radioactive waste into the Bay of Biscay, off Spain. The crew decided to expose the toxic dumping scheme, and pushed south. They would soon blow the lid off one of Britain’s nastiest secrets.

At Falmouth Bay, Susi and Denise Bell returned to London to issue media releases and handle inquiries. Easton and Mariner travelled north to Sharpness, where the nuclear dumping ship Gem sat in port, loading large drums labelled: RADIOACTIVE WASTE. 

Later, off the coast of Spain, the Rainbow Warrior interrupted the dumping. A 600-pound drum dropped from the Gem and flipped a Zodiac, throwing Gijs Thieme into the water, as the film crew captured the event. Later, in London, Susi and the European media teams released the film and photographs and organised a debate with nuclear industry representatives on the BBC. The activists revealed that each year, approximately 80 kilograms of plutonium-239 had been dropped into the Atlantic trench. In a few weeks, the Rainbow Warrior team had opened a new era of scrutiny for the entire European nuclear industry.

Greenpeace International

For the summer of 1979, Susi and the London activists organised new confrontations with the Icelandic whalers and the nuclear garbage scow Gem. Susi, the alliance builder, offered the Rainbow Warrior to Amnesty International, CND, Greenpeace New Zealand, and to other activists for campaigns. When crews returned from campaigns, Susi later told the New Zealand Dominion Post, “it’s like they’ve been to a war zone. You feel like you’ve gone to some bloody killing field somewhere.” In 2015, she recalled, “I still have injuries from those experiences.” 

As Greenpeace became more famous, power struggles naturally arose, and in 1979, Susi fled London to get away from the conflicts. She retreated to the Greek island of Samos, but didn’t rest for long. In Ayios Konstantinos, she heard from fishermen about an annual massacre of Aegean monk seals in the Mediterranean. In her typical fashion, Susi organised “Greenpeace Aegean Sea,” recruited young environmentalist William Johnson, launched a monk seal crusade, and made an alliance with Dr. Keith Ronald from Guelph University in Canada, who brought in the World Wildlife Fund. The ad hoc group successfully ended the marine mammal massacre. 

I next met Susi in November 1979, when we gathered in Amsterdam to create an International Greenpeace Council to coordinate the fast-growing organisation. Susi arrived on the Rainbow Warrior with Jon Castle, Tony Mariner, Athel von Koettlitz, Pete Wilkinson, and others from Europe. The council included representatives from Canada, UK, US, France, Denmark, and the Netherlands. New Zealand, Denmark, Australia and Germany joined soon thereafter, and Greenpeace now operates in 55 countries.

Susi was a fearless activist, more interested in the ecological vision of Greenpeace than in organisational manoeuvring or who would have power. During the week in Amsterdam, I met with her frequently, and the talk was always about our next actions and what we might achieve with Greenpeace tactics. Susi was the real deal, an activist to admire and emulate.

Susi moved to the US and received a degree in Human Ecology from the College of the Atlantic in Maine. In 1985, in New Zealand, during a campaign to stop French nuclear tests at Moruroa Atoll in the South Pacific, the French Secret Service bombed the ship Susi had loved and laboured over. The bombing broke her heart. “Not in a month of Sundays,” she said, “would I ever have expected a major European country to blow up a peace boat.” 

In 1986, she moved to New Zealand (Aotearoa), where she stayed active in ecology and justice campaigns. In 2003, her Rainbow Warrior memoir A Bonfire in My Mouth was published by HarperCollins. 

In New Zealand, in the 1990s, Susi served on the Board of Greenpeace New Zealand. She worked for Oxfam as their climate campaigner, for the NZ Refugee Council, and for the film union. Susi was a poet and a grand storyteller. She loved to talk about her days with Greenpeace and the importance of nonviolent direct action in changing our world for the better.

In the late 1990s, she moved to Waiheke and remained active in campaigns from protecting sensitive ecological regions to supporting Palestinian civil rights. In 2014, Susi helped create a Climate Voter initiative, encouraging New Zealanders to use their vote to make change. The following year, she joined her friend, Greenpeace Aotearoa executive director Bunny McDiarmid, in a march to stop deep sea oil drilling in the region. 

In 2022, Susi began treatment for breast cancer. “I know there is something in the world that is creating a giant cancerous tumour,” she said at the time, “that is tearing us apart, commodifying the air we breathe and the water we drink. I also know that this tumour is interspersed with flowers and song birds and the salty waters of the tears we shed.”

Susi Newborn passed away on 31 December 2023, at the age of 73. The Maori community of Waiheke hosted a memorial for her at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island, on the tribal lands of the Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Paoa Māori people. Piritahi means, fittingly, “coming together as one.” The community gave her a tangi, a Māori farewell. Friends who worked and sailed and battled with Susi over 50 years, attended and offered fond memories. 

“Susi, had a strong sense of injustice,” said McDiarmid, “and never gave up hope it was possible to make change in the world. She believed in the strength of people to make change. She was also really funny, clever and incredibly good company.” 

“Susi was brave and fearless,” said her friend Bianca Ranson, “but that was balanced with her kindness and her generosity. Susi showed us how to be fearless and brave and calculating. She taught us how to keep ourselves safe while pushing the line as hard as we could. What she was doing decades ago, if only people had taken that seriously then we’d be in a very different situation now.  She was a pillar, a pou, of the island community. What are we supposed to do without her?” 

“What I loved in the early Greenpeace years was the feeling that anything could happen anytime, anywhere,” wrote Rainbow Warrior photographer Pierre Gleizes Nicéphore. “On board, life was never dull, and Susi was part of that story from day one.”

“Susi and I have been the best of mates since we met in 77,” said former Rainbow Warrior cook, Hilari Anderson. She called Susi “a feisty sister Warrior.”

I corresponded with Susi and spoke with her by phone many times while she was in New Zealand. She always signed off with “Kia Ora,” a Māori greeting of wellbeing that means “have life.”

I also cannot believe how much education of our members is necessary prior to active demonstrations… I had to tell someone to please remove the Mahatma Gandhi quote (?!?!???!?!) from their speech last week. Having to take extra time to work through things like this, while valuable, is also time which could have been spent on actual planning and organizing… I really wish more people would commit to educating themselves and learning what sources to trust with the information they need to reference.

BEING A MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERATE CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE

In today' s generation,  we cannot deny that the world has been consumed by digital technology as it helps us to make things more convenient such as being able to shop comfortably without going outside, and provides us with any information that we can grasp in just one click, anytime, anywhere—even if we were doing our own business inside the comfort room. These aspects of digital technology will continue to develop to the point that we can no longer expect things to be possible, possible. Thus, it is important to  be literate of the media and information that we have intake for us to be safe because we never know what the future holds. In addition to that,  becoming a media and information literate will not only benefit us but also to the community. We can contribute to the community by promoting media and information literacy on both personal and professional level, encouraging the individuals in the community to use it as expression  of freedom of speech, and a gateway tool for civic responsibility and nation building.

We can contribute to the people in the  community by promoting media and information literacy on their personal level. This means that we will be going to disseminate knowledge to them on how media and information literacy contributes to their everyday life. This approach will give them a heads-up that Media and information literacy enable us to identify legit sources from fake ones which will help us avoid and lessen misleading information in the long run. It also helps us to identify what we are up against and with that, we can be prepared.

 On a professional level, there would be situations in which the media and information literacy is needed such as making presentations, projects, thesis, and dissertation. As a media and information literate, we can contribute to  the people in the  community on their professional level by encouraging them to enhance their Media and Information Literacy skills as it is one of the fundamental skills to master  in order for them to comply and complete the tasks of their respective professional field.

The freedom of speech is the right of every individual to express and articulate their ideas, thoughts, and opinions about something without restraints. Through our knowledge about media and information literacy, we can contribute to the individuals in the community by encouraging each of them to  use the media and information literacy as the figure of speech. In that way, they can voice out their thoughts and feelings more freely and their voices will most likely be heard and  echoes all over the world. However, it is important to keep in mind that if we are going to express and voice out whatever's on our mind, we should still do it in a moderate way so that it will bring us no harm and to other people as well.

 There was a saying from Mahatma Gandhi that “you must be the change you wish to see in the world“, as a media and information literate, we can contribute to the community by taking the  initiative to use the media and information literacy as the tool for civic responsibility and nation building.  we will be disseminating information that will help our nation to develop and become better such as promoting good governance. A well govern nation will lead to our country's reputation best making it a beautiful country to visit. In that approach, we can convince our community to the same which will help us all unite and share the same goal.

To conclude, becoming a media and information literate is more than just a talent, but also an ability to help navigate one's community to be its better version by simply taking small steps such as promoting the MIL on personal and professional level, encouraging to use it as an expression of figure of speech, and a gateway tool to civic-responsibility and nation building. By putting our Media and Information Literacy knowledge and abilities to use, even small steps can make a significant change.

I am not saying this to make you change your mind about Cuba or Che Guevara, but please, don't forget that Che Guevara was also homophic and sent lgbtq+ people to labor camps ("El trabajo los hará hombres" - work will make them men) and racist. And about the doctors, they are exploited, while Cuba send their doctors to other countries, a large part of their salaries has to be sent to the Cuban government and they are left with only 10% to 25% of what the foreign country they work in gave them.

I just want to clarify because I tried to keep it short so my point might have not been too clear.

The post wasn't really about the idolisation of one person but rather how differently people can perceive a person or country or situation given the information they have

We should always point out the negative actions of people and governments.

But at the same time there's a tendency to skew this view of things only to "good people" who do bad things.

As a South African and a black woman I have a unique negative view of Mahatma Gandhi (he was very racist, sexist and creepy) but that doesn't change that his actions helped millions if not billions of people. It would be insane to pretend it didn't.

Obviously, if there are better figures to celebrate we should celebrate them but it doesn't undo history.

For the vast majority of his actions, Che helped people and inspired others to revolution. He is more a symbol now than anything else.

The situation in Cuba is almost not so simple so I wouldn't feel comfortable agreeing or disagreeing but we should remember that the entire country remains under US embargo and sanctions.

If you know anything about that sort of politics, as someone whose country was also once under US sanctions - it is incredibly cruel and designed to make the poorest people's lives the hardest so they turn on their government.

Governments therefore resort to much higher taxes and wealth distribution. The money taken from some goes to others in the best case scenario and if there is corruption that's not exactly a problem unique to Cuba.

Not to mention Cuba, like many countries, has a much more socialistic model than the US.

I'm also pretty sure when attending Elam medical school, tuition, accommodation and boarding is free. Which is probably why the doctors pay back to the government for the first few years. But if you're talking about the years of compulsory community service work all doctors have to do - this system is employed in many countries including mine.

It's normal that medical students and professionals work in government hospitals and clinics which provide free or low cost care to all citizens.

Anyways like I said I don't know much beyond this so I'm not going to insist on a right or wrong. And especially as a queer person, I don't want to overlook or erase the bad things.

Just that different in my perspective because of the information and life I have - Cuba has supported the freedom and education of Africans for longer than I've been alive, my mom has worked closely with Cuban doctors and my father was a freedom fighter against the apartheid regime - I have grown up seeing things one way.

And the video reminded me that some people have grown up never seeing this side of the story.
