The Girl with the Needle (Pigen med nålen)

Ten days ago I watched The Girl with the Needle, Danish period drama dir. by Magnus von Horn, which premiered in May in Cannes, where it got middling reviews - which is mind-boggling, the film is amazing!

It's not just dark and disturbing, it looks and sounds like a horror film.

But the horror comes from the poverty and hard life of working class women in post-World War One Denmark, unwanted pregnancies and the stigma that comes from them, the physical and psychological injuries of war veterans, even before the horrific revelation about the serial killer - - which I already knew was coming since I had read what real life events the film was inspired by. A friend who watched it with me did not know, but guessed it about 10 minutes before the reveal because the film threw enough disturbing hints.

It's dark and heavy and uncomfortable, so probably not the ideal movie to watch at a summer festival in open air cinema, as I did (not that it bothered me, but I'm not sure about most of the rest of the audience) but it's great.
