The Girl With the Needle (2024)

a danish historic film from Magnus von Horn, previously unknown to me, that starts bleak and only gets darker and more depressing for every new event in Karoline's life.

Karoline works at a factory as a seamstress, nearing the end of the first world war and her husband is a soldier who has been missing for a year. She's struggling financially, as without her husbands death certificate, she can't get a widows support and she ends up losing her apartment. The first of many challenges she has to face. I won't say any more than that, and I would recommend not knowing too much more going in if you want to see it. Just know that this is a trigger warning heavy film.

Karoline is a fun character to follow, a woman who does what she needs to do, who has attitude, but becomes worn down from the brutality of life. It is a horrifying tale of what a woman's life could look like at that time.

This film is long, but kept me engaged throughout, I couldn't look away except for when I had to. It is also beautifully shot in black and white and with chillingly good acting. It also plays with genre, described as a historical psychological horror, but von Horn also called it a fairy tale for grown ups and I see what he means, there is a sort of brothers Grimm vibe to it.

All in all, this was a film that certainly made an impression. It is incredibly well made, from visuals, to costumes, to sound track to acting and it goes on - just look at the range of award categories it has won. But it is in no way a "fun" viewing experience. The thing is, with everything going on politically in the world right now, I think this becomes an important film. Some might need a reminder of what kind of society we have to refuse to return to.
