The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter 22)

I'm so sorry. Go get those tissues. I've used all of mine.

Summary: Rosie gets devastating news, and all she can think of is how her Papa is coping.

Twenty-Two Years Old

When Dad called with the news, my first thought was quite irrational: oh no, we’re never going to celebrate our twentieth anniversary! The second thought hit me with force and made me breathless: how is Papa doing?

“I’ll hop on the next…”

“No need, sweetheart. A car will pick you up in approximately fifteen minutes,” Dad assured me, and that’s when I started to cry.

Uncle Myc stood and waited for me outside the car when I ran to the kerb. His arms opened and I collapsed against him, heartbroken and totally devastated. He didn’t try to comfort me with words of nonsense, like it’s going to be ok, because he knew it would be a long time before any of us would be fine after this sudden and tragic loss.

“She seemed fine yesterday,” I told uncle Myc on the way home.

“Yes, so I have been…informed,” he sighed.

“How is he?” I asked, terrified of the answer.

“As expected.”

“Rock bottom,” I mumbled, and felt my throat tighten painfully from withheld tears.

“Indeed,” uncle agreed gravely.

It was worse than I expected. Papa’s loud voice boomed like a signal horn from upstairs when I locked us in.

“How could you not have seen the signs? You’re a bloody doctor, John!”

The words were spit like venom. I couldn’t discern Dad’s reply, but his voice was calm. He knew Papa wasn’t angry at him, but he needed to vent his sorrow, shock and devastation at someone. Luckily for everyone involved, Papa had chosen the right person for such an onslaught.

Before I climbed the stairs, I looked over at Nana’s door.

Gone. Dead. You’ll never see her again. There’ll be no more Christmas baking. She’ll never scold Papa for being petulant anymore. England has fallen.

The seventeen steps had never been so steep, my body never so heavy, and at the same time it felt hollow. 

“Nearly there, Rosamund,” uncle Myc murmured from behind me.

I woke from my daze and realised that the shouting had stopped. In its wake came a sound so heartbreaking, it made tears flow down my cheeks. Before I opened the door, a thought hit me like a battering ram, making me lose my balance for a moment.

If Papa mourned Nana like this, he would be utterly destroyed if Dad died before him. Not even his biological family’s demise could elicit such grief from him.

Inside the flat, Papa clung to Dad, and it struck me how small he seemed in that moment. So lost and bereft. This was not a puzzle he could solve, or a culprit he could catch to make everything right again.

“Rosie’s home,” Dad whispered to Papa and reached for me.

I didn’t think Papa would let go of Dad, give me room, or even detect the words, but he did. My name seemed to have a magical effect on him, because he straightened, turned his pained face at me and lifted his arm to indicate that I was welcomed into his and Dad’s cocoon. We held on to each other for what felt like hours. Dad asking if we were alright, Papa muttering something under his breath, and I just clung to my parents, wordless.

Dad, always reliable in a crisis, remembered that there was another person present, and carefully entangled himself after kissing us both, guiding our arms to embrace. Papa mumbled his name questioningly.

“Just give me a few minutes, Sherlock. Take care of Rosie, yeah?”

Papa nodded and pulled me closer, cradling the back of my head, whispering my precious girland I’m so sorry you have to go through this, and she loved you like a granddaughter.

The days leading up to the funeral alternated between the three of us sharing memories about the core of 221 Baker Street, what we would miss most about her, and lots and lots of crying. 

Dad was our rock in all of this, despite that he grieved his former landlady too. Some nights, Papa was inconsolable, and I thought his heart would literally break. He curled up in bed and sobbed full of despair. Only Dad could hope to console him, coaxing him out of the dark place he had locked himself in.

Both me and Papa agreed that we would honour Martha Hudson on the day of the funeral. Nana’s niece, Deidre, was her only living relative, and uncle Myc assured her that we would arrange everything if she weren’t able. From what Dad told me, she was relieved, having just started her tattoo studio, and she was quite short of money after the investments.

Leaving uncle Myc and his minions in charge of the ceremony, proved to be ingenious, as we all expected. Even Nana would’ve been pleased with him, I think.

It all took place at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park. The Grade II listed Georgian Mansion is a beautiful and tranquil place, posh, but not over the top. 

The pleasantly warm weather allowed us to go dressed without jackets and coats. To honour Nana, all of us wore something purple, her favourite colour. Even uncle Myc acquiesced to leave his black suit at home, and instead he wore a light grey three-piece-suit with a deep purple tie.

Deidre showed up with purple nail polish, her black hair in spikes, the dramatic makeup intact, purple leather trousers, and a matching jacket with a black shirt underneath. Her Doc Martens boots were bright red. She was over the moon about the venue and to what lengths we’d gone to ensure a proper farewell for her aunt.

We didn’t know all the mourners, but I think I spotted a few celebrities who wore gigantic sunglasses and hats to hide their identities, which obviously had the opposite effect. 

Ginny, who conducted the ceremony was a calming presence throughout, and informed the congregation that there would be one speech apart from her own, and musical elements performed by a pianist and Papa on violin.

Papa held it together through his potpourri of Nana’s favourite classical pieces. He had his eyes closed and lost himself in the music. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. Beside me Dad clasped my hand firmly and never took his eyes off Papa. Admiration, love, sorrow and grief washed over his face in quick succession. He rose when Papa lowered his bow and looked over at the coffin that was decorated with purple lilacs. I saw the moment his knees gave way, but Dad was already at his side holding him close whispering something in his ear. I went over to them to pry the violin and bow out of Papa’s limp hands and let him lean into Dad’s arms.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” Dad murmured teary-eyed.

Papa’s sobbing was muffled by his face being buried in Dad’s neck. Dad’s hand cradled the back of Papa’s head like it was a delicate object made of china. Slowly, Dad led Papa back to his seat and he held him tight until it was my turn to honour my beloved Nana.

The night I decided how to do it, Dad and Papa asked if I was sure I would manage it on my own. I retorted that of course I would. I was not a child anymore. What I hadn't considered was that reading a poem out loud in my room was completely different than performing it in front of a crowd, not to mention the emotional impact this performance would have on me.

I got to my feet when Ginny gave the signal and walked over to stand beside the coffin and opened the book on the correct page. Dad and Papa noticed before I did. Something gave me away. Did the book tremble in my hands, did my legs quiver, or did my breathing start to go wild with panic? Whatever it was, they both stood, came over to me, embraced me with their backs to the onlookers to shield me.

“Are you sure you want to go through with this, Bee?” Papa asked with a thick voice filled to the brim with withheld tears.

“You don’t have to, you know. Nobody would…” 

I cut Dad off abruptly feeling the soothing effect the closeness of my parents had on me.

“I’m sure. Stay, will you?” I said quietly.

“Of course,” they retorted in unison.

I took a deep breath, let go of my parents and we all turned to the other mourners and I started to read with one father on each side, radiating comfort and love.

so I've been having many thoughts about like a sweet yet kinda oblivious reader with the group. These are just general ideas but if anyone wants me to elaborate on any let me know:o

cw // drug mentions

• bringing everyone their favorite coffee in the morning and always having little snacks

• when Brett starts working there, you ask what his fav coffee is, and he doesn't think much of it, thinking it's just an ice breaker or smth, but the next day you come in with his fav drink along with the others and he's just,, stunned. like,,, he didn't think anyone would do that since he's knew,, he's just like?????hmsnxj,,

• also having bandaids and wipes along with the snacks in a little backpack or purse

• Brett comes to you a lot with a papercut or some other minor injury and a pout on his face asking for a bandaid. he loves the care that you give, wiping the cut then carefully putting the bandaid on,,, he's soft,, especially after the smile you give him, telling him to be careful,,

• helping Glenn with his divorce therapy if he really wanted to work on his personality after the body switching thing. like helping with listening/ trying not to yell ect.

• when a session goes really well you take him out to dinner, or something he's been talking about wanting lately. even if a session doesn't go as well you remind him that's okay!! progress isn't linear and you're still proud of him!!!

• being shopping buddies with Gigi, and getting your nails done together. Also trying to help with like making media trends, whether it's like memes or fashion, she likes hearing any ideas you have

• Myc and Andre have tried to make dirty jokes and innuendos but they always fly over your head. it used to drive Andre crazy but Myc was always amused seeing your confused face, trying to understand the joke. At first Andre thought you were just messing with him but Myc confirmed that you really just didn't get it

• I like to imagine that one day while you were still relatively new to the job, Andre came up to you and was like what the hell are you on?? since you've always seemed so happy, patient and just? over all bubbly. and you're just like "??? on what??" Andre just kinda laughs until he realizes your serious

• he kinda wonders if you even know more than 5 drugs. I also like to think that at some point he takes the time to teach you how to tell when someone spiked your drink, even if you don't go out much. he just wants to make sure your safe and having a good time<3

• he's also like hey, if you ever decide you wanna try drugs, hit me up! he'll make sure you have a good and safe time,,

• going off the dirty joke point, one time you were trying to learn more about Myc's species and Myc found out, and he was like hey, if you come over to my place tonight, I can show you a thing or two. rather than being flustered or smth along those lines like he was expecting, you just kinda got excited in an innocent way, wondering what he could show you

• he even put a tentacle on your shoulder and there just,, wasn't a single dirty thought in there. it was just you wondering what he could show you, and what snacks he might like hnfhfj

• hanging out with Reagan, listening to her talk about a new invention or something her dad did. or if she's not in the mood to talk/ focusing on her work you're happy to talk about random things

• also bringing her drinks and food, making sure she isn't overworking herself too much

• Reagan tries really hard to keep you away from her dad, even if it's impossible. she doesn't want him hurting you in any way or trying to manipulate you into doing something for him,, she wants to keep you safe from him,,

• doing their nails and hair on (somehow) less busy days. even though Myc doesn't have either, you still decorate him with little accessories so he isn't left out,,

• I like to think Myc and Glenn call you kiddo. Myc uses it more to just tease you while Glenn does it more out of seeing you as a kid he never had(though he won't admit it just yet)

• you and Brett totally get together and plan little surprise parties. like nothing extreme just a little thing for everyone to calm down. like there's everyone's fav food and drinks. even if it isn't a birthday party or Christmas, you get little gifts for everyone, even Brett who didn't see it coming:(<3 (he might tear up a little hnmsdjd,, I love him)

• Myc probably read your mind once while you and Brett were planning a surprise party and totally spoiled it for everyone. he got the cold shoulder from you for a day or two after,, was it a little overdramatic? yeah

• also!! being excited to go to the 80's town too! even if you weren't born in the 80's, or really understand the hype of it like Reagan, seeing Brett be excited about it has you getting a little excited too. you totally dressed up with Brett which made him so happy

• lord have mercy on anyone that makes you upset. if any of them finds out someone hurt you in any way, that info spreads like a wildfire to the rest of the team, and you have to stop them and reassure them you'll be okay before they completely ruin the person's life jsnshk

• they just really appreciate you being there for them and wanna be there for you too:(<3

yeah sure maybe he's a little reckless with it but,,, come on how many people are actually paying attention anyways? Who's gonna notice if he suddenly swaps while getting off the bus?

He has a face! he has eyes. and a nose. you're sure of it. probably.

Like if you look at him head-on you can't distinguish,, anything,, wrong per say, but if someone asked you 'what did that guy look like' you wouldn't have a single goddamn idea. His voice is the only thing that sticks out.

and even then you’ve gotta strain to get a solid memory of it.

It's just so much more convenient for him to,, not need to remember to mind-wipe ppl/be careful of his disguises? And his moral compass is doing kickflips so I feel like he'd have no problem just,, Vaguely Messing With People's Heads.

THIS POST HAS A FEW MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE ANIMATED SHOW “INSIDE JOB” ON NETFLIX. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Once again, we have a binge worthy adult-animation show in the form of “inside job”

I love that they put the show’s name in all lowercase letters, seeing that it’s about conspiracy theories and how obvious things are sometimes hidden in the most obvious way.

Then there’s the company’s name Cognito Inc. which is shown in the series from having been rearranged from the word Incognito, a homage to hiding things in an obvious manner.

Then there’s our protagonist Reagan Ridley, whose last name was presumably derived from “riddles” seeing that she is the leader of the main task force of a Deep State company.

As for her first name, I assume that it has something to do with its “royalty” connotation, because she’s the daughter of one of the founders of Cognito Inc., but there might be more (or less) to it. I’m guessing the show runners might at some point reveal that Reagan is some sort of royalty in the eyes of the Shadow Board? But then again, this is all speculation.

Then we have Brett Hand, whose last name is probably a pointer towards the fact that he’s Reagan’s right-hand man, and also seeks to be everyone’s right-hand man, because of his overwhelming desire to be liked. As for his first name, it could be some sort of inside joke for the creator, Shion Takeuchi. Maybe it’s along the lines of viewing the name “Brett” as generic, or symbolic of “that frat guy”? I may be reaching here, but then again, the entire show’s about reaching.

Then there’s Myc, and really, the spelling of the name makes me instantly think of mucous for some reason. He does secrete a fluid used for the company’s memory-erasers, but that’s kind of a long shot, even for this post. His name might be derivative of “mic” since he can feel what everyone is thinking, synonymous with saying what everyone is thinking; his character is obnoxiously blunt to a fault. He’s from something called the hollow earth (surprise, surprise, the earth’s hollow), and is essentially an immigrant on the earth’s surface. This might be a clever, not so veiled metaphor of how immigrants are often seen as “aliens”, even though Myc isn’t an extra-terrestrial creature. The name Magic Myc is also an obvious reference to magic mushrooms (his body/the fluid he secretes does have an effect on humans)

There might be much more to Myc’s story arc and his people, since the show is called “inside job”, and though the first season doesn’t explicitly reveal the overall plot line of the series, there are mentions throughout about how dangerous the creatures of the hollow earth are to the surface people. This again could be a metaphor of how the “Deep” State, and knowing too much in general, can be dangerous for civilians and their “ordinary” lives. Myc’s name could also be a reference to the name “Mike”, and I’m guessing this may again be an inside joke amongst the people working on the show.

Now we have Gigi Thompson, and there really isn’t much to speculate behind her name; she’s the head of PR and Media Manipulation, and her name is probably a metaphor for how things behind the surface/not on the forefront get lost in the media, and that most people don’t really pay attention to it. There’s a reference to this in the first episode itself, where there are crisis headlines running in the bottom of the news channel while one of POTUS’ speeches.

The name is also fitting, since the first name is possibly an abbreviated version of Gigi’s real name, and that the moniker Gigi is part of the identity she’s created for herself, as would befit a PR and Media Manipulation head. Another reference to the metaphor behind her name is made in a later episode, where she’s outraged that no one knows her last name, pointing towards how people don’t bother to know much beyond what is portrayed in an outlandish/unusual fashion in the forefront, which is an important part of cover-ups. Without people not bothering to cross-check their facts, and their gullibility, there would be no scope for the Deep State. This can also serve as a hit towards social media.

Then there’s Glenn Dolphman, and I’m guessing his name implies that to a certain extent, what you see really is what you get- Glenn is a human-dolphin hybrid, with predominant dolphin features, like a “blow-hole” on his head. The fact that he’s a weapon fanatic, and a staunch patriot is probably the reason why his first name is Glenn (another inside joke, or maybe it’s mainly a baby boomer name?)

Now we have Andre, and to be honest, I really have no name analysis for this one. Maybe Dr. Andre is some kind of obscure American pop culture reference that I don’t understand because, well, I’m not American. He’s a scientist (who never went to med school) and heads the (essentially) bio-terrorism department. He’s also Korean, and was raised by orthodox Christians (as far as I remember, please feel free to correct me). His character is probably a gold mine of metaphors and implications, but I’m in a reference blindspot here, so I can’t really identify them beyond the observation that he’s from an orthodox family and is a doctor, but never really went to med school, and that’s a hit on the “Asians are engineers or doctors” stereotype.

We have JR Scheimpough, and his name is possibly a variation of “scheme” because of the way it’s spelled, but the entirety of his last name tells us that he’s not actually a scheming genius, and is very silly. Maybe it’s a variation of “puff” as well? I’m running out of juice now. I don’t think his full name is ever revealed in the first season, but the initials themselves might be a reference.

Finally, we have Rand Ridley, and his first name might be a variation of “randy” (watch the show and you’ll know what I mean). Randy dandy Rand Ridley. He’s a master manipulator who had a meltdown, tried to blow up? the sun, and was fired from the company, but still holds shares in Cognito Inc. I have a theory that he orchestrated his meltdown to remove JR from the company and completely take over (spoiler), but as of now, it’s not clear whether this is in fact the case. He’s a pretty questionable character, and I started to like him but then, the season finale happened (again, spoiler).

We also have the Shadow Board, which is an ancient cabal that controls the world through the help of Cognito Inc. It’s pretty culty in how and why it makes its major decisions, there’s a lot of supernatural stuff involved in their major decisions too (hint hint, season finale).

There’s stuff that still confounds me (besides Dr Andre and Rand), like their usage of the show name within the show. In episode 2, while Reagan and Brett are going to the Clone Lab, someone is doing underground maintenance in a hallway leading up to the clone lab, and the hazard sign (yes, it’s a hazard sign) says “caution, inside job”. Beyond the metaphors that we’ve already discussed, this may be a subtle reference to the role of hollow earth in the overall plot line of the show, or maybe a secret within Cognito Inc. that has not been revealed yet. The company building has various sub-levels, so I could be grasping at straws, but animated series usually make use of the show’s name within the show’s universe itself as an Easter egg/hint of sorts. Maybe it was just a gag and I’ve become much too paranoid after watching show. I don’t have the still for this, so go watch the show.

This was just a basic overview of the show, and I might do episode by episode analyses because it’s a banger of a show.

The show also have a website called cognitocareers.com and honestly, it’s a brilliant publicity move, because besides the show’s fans, anyone who will come across the website who doesn’t know about the show will be genuinely shell-shocked (check it out to find out what I’m talking about).

I’ve been editing this post and I’ve just realised that the co-founders’ names are RR and JR. This could be some sort of reference to past American politics or American pop-culture (I’m thinking Ronald Reagan). Maybe JR indirectly stands for juniour? Feel free to help me out here.

Quirky Mature Comedy "Inside Job" Lampoons Conspiracy Theories

On October 22, the first ten episodes of Inside Job aired on Netflix. The show is not only irreverent, witty, and quirky, but its well-developed characters, voice acting, animation, and plot make the show captivating enough to watch, from episode to episode. Its interlinking stories lead to a devastating "resolution" that will shake you to the core.

Inside Job, a mix of workplace comedy and paranoid fiction, is the first animated series by Shion Takeuchi, a former writer for Gravity Falls, writer for Disenchantment, and former storyboarder for Regular Show. The creator of Gravity Falls, Alex Hirsch, is an executive producer, as is Takeuchi. It is the first series created by her as part of a deal with Netflix to produce animated content. Hirsch said that he was inspired by the X-Files while he and Takeuchi were inspired by pages of the Weekly World News, an outlandish tabloid.

Inside Job has six main characters: tech genius Reagan Ridley (voiced by Lizzy Caplan), yes-man/fratboy Brett Hand (voiced by Clark Duke), biochemist Dr. Andre (voiced by Bobby Lee), humanoid dolphin/supersoldier Glenn Dolphman (voiced by John DiMaggio), PR officer Gigi Thompson (Tisha Campbell), and psychic mushroom organism Magic Myc (voiced by Brett Gelman). Supporting characters include current CEO J.R. Scheimpough (voiced by Andrew Daley) and Reagan's father Rand Ridley (voiced by Christian Slater). Reagan, J.R., Andrew, Glenn, Gigi, and Magic work at Cognito, Inc., with Reagan managing her co-workers and wanting to make the world "a better place," while dealing with her paranoid father, the former company CEO. Reagan herself is multiracial as her mother, Tomiko (voiced by Suzy Nakamura), is Japanese. In this world, every conspiracy theory is real, with Cognito as a shadow government entity that makes this all happen, working for those in the shadows.

The ten-episode first season of Inside Job introduces viewers to Cognito, Inc., where all manner of conspiracies are afoot. In the first episode, Reagan tries to replace the president with a robot after the previous one was "too dumb" to manipulate, while her goal to become the head of the team is squashed by her boss, J.R., who brings in a man named Brett Hand to co-lead the team. In the second episode, Brett and Reagan are confronted with the difficult task of figuring out who to fire as Cognito makes cutbacks, while her team tries to kiss up to her, thinking they will be fired, and having to fight off a powerful monster.

Later episodes feature a reptilian/lizard people gala, Reagan attempting to get a boyfriend, selling outdated and dangerous products to a town stuck in the 1980s, Reagan attempting to stop her dad from learning about her mom's wedding, ghosting a flirty secret agent, a free love commune on the Moon, a mole inside of Cognito, and trying to stop a robot by delving deep into her mind, while learning the truth about her father.

Weirdness and mature subject matters are at the center of Inside Job, with nothing held back. The show has characters cursing and blood being spilled, even in the first episode. Curse words fly right and left, mostly out of Reagan's mouth, and for good reason! Clearly, due to this, some people may not like the show or find it "too mature," or even sexual at times, in par with other mature animations that have been released recently, whether by Netflix or on other platforms.

While reviewers rightly described this series as mocking "our brain-fried reality," having a "lot of energy," being "emotionally wise and sincere," there is more to this show than that. It uses, in Takeuchi's words, comedy to "process difficult emotions, and... a way to explore these kinds of topics [conspiracy theories] and the ridiculousness of them." This is made clear from the fact that at first Reagan feels threatened by Brett. He comes to her for help, as he is under too much pressure. And both work together to control the rogue president and help each other. Although it reminds me a little of Mr. Robot, which focused on a group of hackers trying to bring down the "elites," Inside Job is the opposite of this, as the protagonists of this series are the same elites that those characters were attempting to take out by any means necessary.

One of my favorite parts of Inside Job is the weirdness and quirkiness, whether it's the human-hybrids, the lizard people, assassins (like one who shot JFK, who is voiced by Alex Hirsch), or something else entirely. The animation, music score, and background art are superb as well, with all sorts of easter eggs linking to other shows and topics, for those who wish to delve deeper. Like the highly-enjoyable Disenchantment, drinking, alcoholism, and drug use are some of the show's themes. On the other hand, it is more comedic than Disenchantment, although its comedy isn't constructed in the same way as it is in shows like Star Trek: Lower Decks.

One of the funnier episodes is when they show all the people said to be reptilian, like Al Gore, Taylor Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Guillermo El Toro, Ellen DeGeneres, Judge Judy, Anderson Cooper and so on. I chuckled a little when they made fun of the Jason Bourne series and how ridiculous it is, or the joke about the Bechdel test. The show references series like Stranger Things (set in the 1980s), Ghostbusters, Star Wars, The Terminator, The Goonies, Harry Potter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and E.T., along with Blockbuster, Jeff Bezos, and the James Bond films, to name a few references.

Inside Job has a better spy episode than anything that Q-Force could come up with and reminds me a little of a Phineas and Ferb episode, "Live and Let Dive," where the evil doctor has a lair, although Inside Job ups the ante to something that is even more hilarious than either one of those shows.

Similar to other shows, broken families and having friends are also themes featured in Inside Job. This is noted in the show's third episode, when the audience learns that Reagan's parents are divorced, with her mother writing erotic stories. Reagan tries to make sure she has a group of friends among her co-workers, so they all support her, no matter the mission they have to undertake, although Brett is the most loyal and supportive of them all. This happens when her social anxiety comes to the fore in the show's third episode, when she is told to hug people at a reptoid gala, while she remains socially inept, learning it is because of a robot her father invented. It also happens when she has relationship problems and attempts to get someone with toxic masculinity, and has issues with codependency.

Some fans have even speculated that Reagan might be autistic. Having someone who is socially awkward and anxious is not unique to Inside Job, though. Cleopatra, the protagonist of Cleopatra in Space, has ADHD, Luz Noceda, the bisexual Afro-Latina protagonist of The Owl House, is neurodivergent, and Entrapta, the socially awkward (and morally grey) sciencey princess, in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is autistic. In addition, Peridot, a non-binary Gem woman in Steven Universe has been described by some fans as autistic, since Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar said that none of the Gems in the series can be considered neurotypical.

Apart from Hirsch and Takeuchi, the others working on Inside Job are a talented bunch. They include animator Mike Hollingsworth, one of the show's executive producers, who was the supervising director of BoJack Horseman, Pete Mitchels, an animator who directed the first two seasons of Rick and Morty and episodes of Family Guy, and Chantal Hennessey, who was a supervising director for 24 episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

Additionally, the series art director, Jeffrey M. Thompson, was an art director for Rick and Morty, and an animator and artist on Gravity Falls. Two of the show's animators, Andrew Bomo, the technical director, and Justin Schultz, worked on shows such as Harley Quinn, Invincible, Big Mouth, Onyx Equinox, Milo Murphy's Law, and DuckTales, to name a few. The opening theme is performed by Bronze, featuring BBRC, and is titled "Pa$$ the Time (Part 2)" while Ryan Elder and Steve Reidell are composers of the show's electronic music.

Inside Job seems to have been accepted relatively positively, including on the show's subreddit, which currently has over 800 subscribers, and has an official account with over 6,000 followers on Twitter, coupled with a fake website for Cognito, Inc. for interested fans. I expect there will be fanfiction as well, but currently, there is a good amount of fan art of Reagan, noting the show's references to other popular media. It is nothing like the documentary of the same name which focuses on the causes of the 2007-2008 global economic crisis. All in all, I am hopeful and optimistic that this show will be popular, although some people will undoubtedly sneer at it for one reason or another, probably the same people who dislike shows like Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and the like. Currently, it has high marks on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

The second half of Inside Job's first season will presumably be ten episodes long since 20 episodes of the series were ordered in April 2019 by Netflix. This show is unique in its own way and despite its strange nature at times, the characters, especially the protagonist Reagan, are relatable. It is unlike any other show I've ever seen. It doesn't fall into the usual animated sitcom model that mature animations sometimes tend to end up in, which began with the premiere of The Simpsons in 1989, and bolstered by shows like South Park, Family Guy, and American Dad!, to name a few that fit into the sitcom format.

Inside Job has the themes of togetherness and chosen family, with Reagan telling Brett that she and the rest of their team are his "business family forever" while she temporarily reconnects with her dad after feeling, rightly, that he is a poor father, before learning his terrible secret, all while he gaslights her repeatedly. Her relationship with her father is toxic and seeped in deep-seated trauma, which affects her daily life, personality, and everything else, while serving at the center of the show itself. The series shares some similarities, on a very limited basis, in terms of locations, to Futurama, as the characters traveled to the Moon in that particular series, and some visual jokes, but that's about it, as Inside Job goes to darker places and confronts issues that Futurama didn't.

The story, which Hirsch described as Takeuchi's "hilarious bizarre fever dream of a show that could only come from her unique vision of the world" will undoubtedly continue with support from Netflix. Hirsch also said that since Inside Job is for adults "keep all them Disney-babies far away."

Caplan described the show rightly, saying it serves as a public service, "reminding us of a time where they [conspiracy theories] were niche and maybe reserved for a guy who lives in a cabin in the woods alone and not half the population" and joked she could get behind the lizard people conspiracy, while saying that the theories the show tackles are vintage but fun at the same time. She additionally praised her character as not falling into existing tropes or archetypes while lamenting that "it’s depressing where the modern conspiracy theories are going." I think all of us can agree with that, as some theories are downright dangerous, leading to death, violence, or whatnot.

In the second part of season 1, it would be wonderful to have openly queer characters in the main cast of Inside Job. The current episodes have some queer vibes, like the orgy of reptilians or how all of the team (including two who are male) have crushes/like Brett Hand. Additionally, Andre identifies as "always sexual" with men and women around him as shown in the show's fourth episode, the same episode which shows a polyamorous couple in the background. There are also the vibes between the British secret agent, Rafe Masters, and the nemesis in one episode, vibes that are clearly homoerotic and are over the top, parodying the James Bond spy films. The astronauts are drawn in by space sex. Glenn has sex dreams about everyone on the team.

As for Reagan, based on the interpersonal conflicts she has been a part of in the first part of Season 1, it seems that in future episodes she will have to face her dad, who has become an obstacle to her progress and moving up the ranks of Cognito, instead of any LGBTQ+ focus on her part. Even so, the series could have an episode where she meets someone, just as Bean did in Disenchantment or Ash in Final Space, who she connects with on a deeper level without taking away from her main arc, although I find that to be unlikely.

In any case, I would highly recommend Inside Job for its hilarity, quirkiness, uniqueness, strong animation, character development, and wild plots.

For him, I wanted to represent the little pink sprouts (???) That Mushroom Myc has with that lil man bun- honestly I need to work on making distinct shapes with things that aren't just hair but whatever.

The baggy hoodie helped with that too- his clothes are all super loose so tbh it's hard not making him a big baggy glob on screen but whatever, if I need to change the design I can 😮‍💨

Colours: omg Mushroom Myc has a LOT of colour, I think I counted 9??? It works tho cause 90% of him is purple blue from the ground up- then his big ass head ass head has all the pinks/purples to draw your eyes in

Naturalists are very grounded and poised to harness the Earth’s innate power, making them capable of cultivating plants with magical properties. Possibly linked to the manipulation of fauna as well.

OTHER DISCIPLINES

Horomancy is the magical discipline that uses clockwork to manipulate magic to various effects, including manipulating time, shifting probability fields, as well as traveling across alternate realities.

Secrets Magic is an arcane magical Discipline that deals with the internal Circumstance of truth.

Quaeromancy is the magical ability of dowsing, or the ability to locate lost or hidden objects with ease

               Friday evening, after her shift, Molly took a cab straight to Baker Street. She peered out the window at the falling snow covering the ground in a blanket of white. It wasn’t long before she arrived at 221B. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder before stepping out and paying the cabbie. Down the street, she heard carolers singing an impressive rendition of Carol of the Bells. Looking up toward his windows decorated with fairy lights then back at the door, Molly took a deep breath.

               You can do this.

               The moment she opened the door, a beautiful melody drifted through the air. She climbed the stairs, careful to avoid the creaky spots. The door was left ajar. Molly hesitated as she peeked inside to find Sherlock lost in the music he was playing. An involuntary gasp left her mouth, interrupting his concentration.

               “I’m not taking clients to—“ Sherlock stopped short when his eyes landed on her. “Molly.” He set down his Stradivarius to greet her. “I didn’t expect to see you.”

               Molly lingered in the doorway, her nerves getting the better of her. “I was hoping we could talk, but you seem pretty busy, so—“

               “Nonsense,” he smiled. “Please, come in, get warm.” Sherlock helped slip off her coat and shut the door behind her. He then headed toward the kitchen, as Molly sat down on the sofa. “Tea?”

               “If it’s not any trouble,” Molly replied. To say she was anxious was an understatement. She hadn’t a clue why she was so hesitant now. It was obvious that he cared for her—that he loved her. When he returned, he handed her a steaming cup of earl grey, sitting down beside her.

               Sherlock took notice of Molly’s nervous demeanor, which clued him in on the seriousness of the conversation. Whatever they would be talking about was more than likely going to change things between them. The question was would it be for the worse or the better? How could he calm her?

               Molly sipped tentatively at her tea, the warm liquid clearing her head. She turned towards him, setting the cup down on the table. “Do you remember what you told me that night? When you came to see me?”

               That…wasn’t quite what he expected. “That you never have to feel alone again,” Sherlock recalled. “And I apologised profusely for the hell I put you through.”

               “Did you mean it? Really mean it? Because what I want to talk about may send you running. I need to be sure you won’t just leave me in the dark.” The fear in Molly’s eyes took him by surprise. She was truly afraid of losing him. Didn’t she know he could never leave her?

               “Molly,” he spoke softly, taking her hands in his, “I would never abandon you. There is nothing you could say that would convince me to leave your side.”

               His words took the edge off, she had to admit. His eyes bore into hers with such sincerity. The moment she began to open her mouth, his mobile rang.

               “You can get it,” Molly told him, thankful for the reprieve. Sherlock appeared hesitant, but ended up picking up the phone.

               “Myc—Mummy?” he answered in surprise. “Ah, yes, it…slipped my mind.” Though it seemed to be bad timing at first, Sherlock felt he should take this opportunity. He held his index finger up in a gesture of ‘wait here’ whilst he took the call in his bedroom.

               Once in his bedroom, Sherlock felt this would be the best time to get the advice he wish he had. “We’ll just switch the days around, that’s all. You and dad stay with Mycroft tonight, and tomorrow you’ll stay with me.”

               “Well, you see, dear, it may be impossible at the moment. We’re already at Mikey’s place, but have you not looked out your window lately?” Mrs. Holmes asked him.

               “Sherlock!” Molly called out to him. He poked his head out from behind his door. “What is it, Molly?”

               “A snowstorm,” she replied, gesturing towards the window. Sure enough, the snow was coming down hard, accompanied by hail. It was accumulating at an alarming rate.

               “Sherlock?” his mother asked. “Do you have a woman there?? Is it that lovely girl who helped save you? I must meet her some—“

               “A moment, Mummy,” Sherlock spoke quietly. “Molly, I’ll be right with you.” He shut himself up in his bedroom once more. “Is dad there?”

               “Hm? Oh, yes, did you want to speak with him?” she asked.

               “Please,” Sherlock replied.

               “Alright, but this conversation about Molly isn’t over,” his mum told him.

               “Noted.” Sherlock waited for her to hand off the phone to his father.

               “Sherlock, is everything alright?” Siger Holmes asked his son. “Your mother’s going on about a miracle.”

               Sherlock couldn’t help but chuckle at his mother’s antics. “I need some advice. I find myself in a situation with one of my best friends. She’s, ah—well, needless to say she is snowed in with me now, but I’m not sure how to proceed.”

               “Proceed? Don’t you have house-guests regularly what with clients and such?” his father asked, a bit confused.

               “It’s not about that,” Sherlock said quickly. “I have found it difficult to remain only friends with her. It’s—unsettling. Whilst I would rather stay friends than lose her, I would much prefer if we were more. I’m not sure how to go about telling her. How did you tell mum? Weren’t the two of you friends first?”

               “We were, yes, and only a bit younger than you are now,” his father told him. “Your mother and I, though we started off as friends, we both knew there was much more beneath the surface. After three years, we began going steady, and married another three years after that.”

               “Yes, but how did you tell her you wanted more?” Sherlock asked, a bit impatiently.

               “I didn’t,” his father confessed. “Your mum with that brain of hers could have furthered her career, but she gave it all up for a marriage and children.”

               “Are you saying it was mum who told you?” Sherlock was surprised. He had never known that.

               “Headstrong, your mother was—still is,” Siger remarked. “Out of the blue, she asked me when I planned to propose.” He laughed fondly. “I must say I was taken by surprise. I, of course, didn’t propose until a couple years after that.”

               Sherlock sighed. “What should I do?”

               Siger considered this for a moment. “What you do, son, is you tell her you love her. Simple as that. How does she make you feel? Don’t tell me, tell her. Words, though affirming, are not enough. You’ve got to show her.”

               For once in his life, Sherlock understood how to proceed with a real romantic entanglement. He knew exactly what he needed to do.

Q opened the door, and in doing so, almost tripped over his own feet.

“Whaddyouwan?”

Mycroft blinked at him, sighed with the weariness of an elder sibling. “Hello, Q.”

Q wrinkled his nose. “My?”

“Well done, yes,” Mycroft replied drily; Q tried to focus his eyes, failed a bit. “May I come in?” Q squinted. Mycroft realised he wasn’t wearing his glasses. “You Myc?”

“Yes,” Mycroft replied patiently. “It’s me. Q, let me in.”

It took several long seconds - and Q looked so very confused - but he let Mycroft into his flat, stumbling slightly and eventually catapulting himself onto the sofa with Mycroft close behind.

“Why you here?” Q slurred, taking a long slug of what looked to be sheer vodka.

It took a frankly ridiculous degree of patience, but eventually, Mycroft had Q’s undivided attention. “Q. He’s gone.”

Q’s lip twitched in a strange type of disgust. “I know. And?”

“And you’ve not been sober since,” Mycroft pointed out. “Which isn’t exactly a good thing, last I checked.”

“I didn’t ask you to check,” Q pointed out, just a little bit unpleasantly. “I get you want to be nice to me and everything, but…”

“If I wanted to be nice, I’d just hand over a bottle of decent gin and leave you to self-annihilate,” Mycroft told him, voice remarkably flat, rather unpleasant. “Rather: Q, you need to start compartmentalising, and you need to use your mind bungalow.”

“It is not a bungalow it is a town house,” Q screeched, the mantra of a childhood of mockery. “It has stairs, for the love of all that’s holy…”

“... then use it,” Mycroft said, tone inarguable. “That’s what it’s for.”

Q blinked at him. “Don’t pretend you understand how I feel,” he warned, slurring badly, eyes wide and unsurprisingly unfocused. “You…”

Mycroft waited, as Q all but toppled over onto the sofa. “Q. You’re allowed to hurt. But if you let it fester like this…”

“Fine,” Q mumbled, eyes closing. “Talk me through it. You were always best at it.”

Mycroft smiled slightly. “Okay. First, imagine it. Your... town house.”

“... I hate you,” Q murmured. “Town house.”

It was the simplest, most familiar thing in the world: Mycroft’s voice, guiding him into a complex image, the place Q had used for memory and thought dispensing for as long as he could remember. Mycroft had guided him into building the damn thing, how to use and abuse it as much as he could.

Q had always mistrusted the use of it to dispense bad memories.

Now, Q realised, he’d never had memories bad enough.

“He left me, My,” Q whispered, almost inaudibly. “He lied to me.”

Mycroft’s hand covered his, warm and careful, the most physical contact Q would ever expect from his sibling. “I’m sorry,” Mycroft replied, and sounded more or less genuine.

Q keeled over, and face-planted himself on Mycroft’s three-piece suit, tears and snot and all.

Mycroft froze for a solid five seconds, before carefully collecting Q in his arms, winding him back together, inch by inch.
