the world is in shambles and maerys is trying to stay afloat. her husband has been gone for months at this point, since he serves in the military and was called to arms when the war began. she has not heard from him since, so for all she knows, he could be dead. it is a lucky coincidence that her true father serves as maester at the keep and does not mind watching her children whenever her help as midwife is needed, otherwise she wouldn't know what to do with them. at barely one and three the two are too young to be left alone and she can hardly take them to her clients all the time.

this morning, however, she was forced to take maeve with her, because the little one refused to stay with anyone else. it is not too bad, for she is sound asleep in the sling maerys wears, as she hurries to the chambers of lady mormont, who has requested to speak with her. mae doesn't know the reason for her request, but never minds visiting the women of the keep. from pregnancy, to childbirth, to abortion and contraceptives, she is at their service and provides whatever is in her power. knocking, she quietly enters the chambers and bows slightly. "mylady, i am maerys clearwater. you called for me? i must apologize, i had to bring my youngest. i hope that is no bother to you."

With the wedding ceremony finished, the celebration of the marriage has been well underway. Henry himself hovers near the edges of the room, walking the perimeter. Heavy set brows show no sign of his own merriment.  Even as some of the guards have taken to drinking themselves. He keeps a watchful eye on this. Perhaps more diligently than is necessary; this has been his life for the last fifteen years. And he is all too aware of how this many characters in one room.  Falling into cup after cup. He knows how quickly merriment cant turn at the point of a blade. Something catches his eye as he makes another pass around the room. A hair comb from the looks of it, as the owner continues to walk on, unknowing of the possession they’ve lost. He’s quick to reach for it, footsteps catching up to the lady as he reaches for her. Gently tapping her on her elbow. 

“Lady Whent,” he offers a bow before stretching his hand towards her. “ I believe you dropped this, it’s a lovely heirloom, and I wanted to make sure to give it to you before the night gets too late.” 

admittedly, maeve had been far too caught up in her thoughts to notice that her fair had entirely fallen around her shoulders, mother’s hair comb having fallen out in her rush to return to her father. the touch to her elbow startles her only slightly, turning quickly to acknowledge whoever had stopped her path. soft brown eyes rest on henry mormont, smiling warmly at the familiar man. his bow has her letting out a small giggle, amused by the formalities he uses. “ lord mormont,” she returns, reaching for his hand.

the woman freezes, delicate fingers hovering above his palm and the hair comb as she realizes what it is he’s offering her. maeve reaches with her hand to touch where the comb had laid before, finding it empty. her chest tightens at the idea that she may have lost something so precious, one of the few things she had left of her. “ you are incredibly kind..” her gaze returns to him, smiling warmly at him. “ do you perhaps think you could help me place it back again?”

Maeve Mormont • The Right To Call It Home

Mormont women are all fighters too. Even Maeve. Even though her years at Winterfell had made her softer, more ladylike, she was still a Mormont of Bear Island and still a fighter.  She was still a Mormont of Bear Island, she still hated the Greyjoys, and she was still born for war.  Only, one of those might not be as true as she'd thought.  As much as she hated to admit it, the Starks' ward had grown fond of the Greyjoy hostage with whom she spent so much time, and she could already see how the fondness could easily grow into something more.
