My top five AHS seasons
1. Asylum
Step inside a madhouse of horror and experience the chilling new incarnation of TV's most daringly provocative series. In American Horror Story: Asylum, the sins of the past haunt the present at the notorious Briarcliff Manor, a Church-run haven for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude in 1964. Forbidden desire and terrifying evil lurk around every corner... from alien abduction to demonic possession to a skin-wearing psychopath known as "Bloody Face".
2. Roanoke
Life imitates grisly reality TV in one of television's edgiest and most acclaimed shows ever! Told in gripping true crime documentary style, 'My Roanoke Nightmare'―this season's show within a show―chronicles showing paranormal events. Hoping to begin a peaceful new life in a rustic North Carolina farmhouse, Shelby and Matt Miller (Emmy winner Sarah Paulson and Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.) flee Los Angeles, only to find murder, mayhem and madness! From a girl ghost to a swine monster to murderous nurse sisters to a sadistic cult leader known as The Butcher (Oscar winner Kathy Bates), the couple's home is filled with nonstop terrors.
3. Murder house
American Horror Story: Murder House revolves around the Harmons, a family of three – Ben, Vivien, and Violet – who moved from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish.
4. Coven
After 300 years of witches living in secrecy, new attacks have both threatened their survival and forced "gifted" girls to attend a special school for safety in American Horror Story: Coven.
5. Freakshow
Step inside American Horror Story: Freak Show, the terrifyingly twisted reincarnation of TV’s most shockingly original series. Jessica Lange leads an extraordinary, award-winning cast. Lange plays Elsa Mars, the proprietor of a troupe of human “curiosities” on a desperate journey of survival in the sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida, in 1952. Her menagerie of performers includes a two-headed, telepathic twins (Paulson), a take-charge bearded lady (Bates), a vulnerable strongman (Chiklis) and his sultry, three-breasted wife (Bassett). But the strange emergence of a dark entity will savagely threaten the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike.

Tumblr media
Copyrighted image from Neil Gaiman's Stardust (1997)
Oldboy (2003) - Directed by Park Chan-wook, this South Korean thriller follows a man who is imprisoned for 15 years without explanation, only to be released and given five days to uncover the truth. The movie is based on a manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi.
Men in Black (1997) - Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, this sci-fi comedy stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as secret agents who monitor and regulate extraterrestrial activity on Earth. The movie is based on a comic book series by Lowell Cunningham.

RED (2010) - Directed by Robert Schwentke, this action-comedy stars Bruce Willis as a retired CIA agent who must come out of retirement to save himself and his former colleagues. The movie is based on a comic book series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.

Spraypainting the cat? What was he thinking??
Tumblr media
With four-year college degrees under our belts and a dab of training in Child Psychology, my wife and I thought we were ready for anything when it came to this parenting gig. We had no idea we would be outnumbered and outgunned. From diet to riot, meds to charts, we've tried it all, to train up our ADHD kids in the way they should grow.
From the Home School of Hard Knocks, our four ADHD kids have taught us more about coping and planning ahead than any four-year college degree could have, especially when it comes to understanding what goes on in the mind of a five-year-old in a Buzz Lightyear costume flying on a treadmill. To Infinity, and Beyond.
This is the chronicle of two adult ADHD parents and their four ADHD kids living in a loving madhouse with four neurotic cats and a snow-white bi-eyed monster dog that eats trees. Inside, you will find more laughs and maybe some help and advice for what to do with the ADHD kids in your own home, from someone who's Been There, Done That.

What were your first DVDs? (if you can remember that far)
Mine were Inspector Gadget, George of the Jungle and Flubber (all Disney movies, go figure)
DVDs, huh? Humm... We were still using VHS up until pretty late; my first VHS tape was a collection of kids' TV shows (Thomas the Tank Engine, Clangers, Ivor the engine, ZZZap!, and William's Wish Wellingtons, I believe) -- I also had Pokémon the First Movie, and I had bought the Hunchback of Notre-Dame from a school fete with my pocket money~
But DVDs, huh... We had a DVD player, but I don't think I had any up until Pokémon Chronicles got released on box set - then I also ended up with Pokémon Heroes.. I'm sensing a theme! Then it was ATLA; they made these really nice boxsets for each book, which had about 4-5 discs per boxset... We all saved up to buy all of them. (Yes, it amuses me that you can now buy the whole series on one single bluray disc... )
Then it's immediately off the rails, because HMV started stocking anime! ... Of Japanese animated movies, I have a metric tonne. If Madhouse animated it, I wanted it.! My copy of Summer Wars became immediately very well-travelled. Ouran Highschool Hostclub entered the roster, and I even recieved a 'NEGIMA!' DVD set for my birthday, one year ... Uh oh. I also kept trying to get into Naruto, so there's a bunch of sporadic DVDs (Somewhere in there, I have a DVD of the 2011 Vocaloid live in Sapporo show, which I played to my entire coach on a trip to France circa 2012... Ha!)
So, didn't get into DVDs until quite late, but had a VHS player up until... -glance behind- ... Well, I suppose up until I'd moved out; that thing is still plugged into the computer room of my parents' place.

SUNDAY KEYNOTE ANNOUNCED
Tumblr media
We’re thrilled to announce that on Sunday 8th, we’ll be joined by JULIAN SANCTON, author of Madhouse at the End of the Earth.
In the Antarctic winter of 1898, Belgian naval officer Adrien de Gerlache, captain of the Belgica, made the glory-seeking (and ill-advised) decision to sail deep into the ice, ultimately stranding his ship and and its multinational crew for months in the polar night.
In Madhouse at the End of the Earth, Julian Sancton chronicles the mayhem that unfolded under those most extreme circumstances. He’ll be joining us for our Sunday keynote to talk all things Belgica, as well as answering questions from the audience!
❄️ Register now!

When I first read The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell and realized what he was doing, I was awed. I wanted to connect my novels like that. I wanted characters to dance through different stories. I wanted there to be a universal truth that tied them all together. . Mason was the beginning of that three years ago. Andrew became the root of it two years ago. But sister witches was where it all started to take shape, and now, for the first time ever, each of my heads of power are meeting. . Henley Abelló is head witch of Salem. Andrew Levi is head of the largest vampire coven in the world. Mason is king of the Fae. . It’s wild to me that these three legends are finally coming together, but the last of them has finally arrived, and he also happens to be the oldest of them all. 🦇 . . . #marywrites #amwriting #writing #writersofinstagram #sisterwitches #witches #witch #witchy #witchcraft #vampiredetective #vampire #madhousechronicles #faeries #faery #fae #fairy #fairies https://www.instagram.com/p/B89A-Emg6xC/?igshid=c7066gd6ctu9

A Quick Review of the books I’ve read this summer
Chronicles of the Necromancer: The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin
I honestly liked this book. It’s got a lot of bad reviews because yeah, its fairly predictable and follows a fairly taboo fantasy plot. But, if you want to read a fun, easy fantasy book, this one fit the bill. It was nice to just read a fun book after reading so many books for school/work.
Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie
Obviously, Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors, so I enjoyed the book. It follows a young couple who move into a new house. But upon moving into the house, old memories resurface...of a murder? The book also features one of the token characters, Miss Marple.
Moonshine, Madhouse by Rob Thurman
These are the 2nd and 3rd books in a series. Again, they’re quick, easy reads and I enjoyed them. The series is similar to the TV series Supernatural, it follows two brothers as they fight supernatural creatures, but it was a fun read.
The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green
This was the first book in a series. It was another quick, easy read, aimed more for teens/young adults. It follows the stories of 5 different characters as we see their lives intertwine throughout the series. A decent fantasy read, if you’re looking for something fun and easy.

ANYTHING 4 U @simplyirenic
drumroll please.............. introducing:
EMIL G. RACOVIȚĂ
(or racovitza)
you may already know this romanian scientist as the subject of this popular and famous photo, the first-ever photograph taken underwater, with an exposure time of 30 minutes:
Tumblr media
it was taken in 1899 at the oceanographic laboratory in banyuls-sur-mer, france, where racovitza was working at the time in his capacity as a pioneering marine biologist.
however, a mere year prior, racovitza had been suffering through a harsh antarctic winter as a member of the scientific staff on board the belgica, the ice-locked ship of the belgian antarctic expedition.
(for more on this expedition i am beseeching you to read MADHOUSE AT THE END OF THE EARTH which you can find at your library probably or on various illicit webbed sites as well as bookstores!!!)
but the basic summary is, raco (as he was known) was one of the first men hired onto the expedition by leader adrien de gerlache, who was essentially a trust fund kid with a lifelong obsession with ships, sailing, and exploration. which was kind of unfortunate for someone from belgium, a country with little coastline to speak of and a navy that was mainly for show. this was the late 19th century and most belgians were hella amped re doing atrocities in the congo but no, not good old adrien. instead his heart was fixed on making belgium a name to be reckoned with in the world of polar exploration. cue laugh track
anyway raco came along for the ride, he was also from a rich family so it helped that he offered to serve without pay. also look at him. you would want him on your ship. you would want him, like, in general. i certainly do. he's like if the man on the pringles can exuded unbearable erotic energy.
Tumblr media
raco's official duties on the expedition included collecting and analyzing zoological and botanic samples from the sea, ice, and land; conducting meteorological readings; documenting the wildlife and landscape; and all sorts of other vital scientific tasks. and being cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
however his most important job on the expedition by far was probably that of resident cartoonist:
Another beloved monotony-breaking ritual was the presentation of Racovitza’s daily cartoon. In addition to his skill at anatomical drawing, the zoologist was a scathing caricaturist with an eastern European fondness for the absurd and a scatological streak. Though bawdy and puerile, Racovitza’s pencil sketches were an unfiltered take on life aboard the Belgica, a chronicle of the men’s frustrations and inside jokes.
listen. when julian said these cartoons were bawdy i was like yeah sure okay. but my god, the man did not hold back. he was KINKY. he was obsessed with butts in particular, drawing the ass of his scientific colleague henryk arctowski over and over, including comparisons to the flat backside of lieutenant danco:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there were also cartoons dealing with shitting blood, watching women piss, and naked boxing. you can literally look at them all yourself although i will say they're about 1000x funnier if you know the people involved so it's a nice treat after you finish reading madhouse. but here's another favorite demonstrating the harsh realities of an icebound ship ("promenade in the caca avenue"):
Tumblr media
anyway while the life-threatening chaos of this frathouse-esque expedition was going on around him, and cook and amundsen were off somewhere staring into each other's eyes like in the "is this allowed!?!" vine, raco continued doing important scientific work, pranking the hell out of his shipmates, and also being adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
eventually the expedition freed themselves from the ice and returned home. raco resumed his research career, working with the other members of the expedition to compile and publish the results of their findings, and eventually rising in the ranks of the scientific establishment of europe.
basically what i love about raco and what brings me joy every day to contemplate is that he was clearly an enormous goof with a wide variety of deranged fetishes, but also a brilliant and hard-working scientist who founded an entirely new scientific field (biospeleogy, the study of cave organisms) and grew up to be a hot dad, the most badass looking grandpa, and ended his life as one of the most respected and renowned scientists in all of romanian history. he's on stamps!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes i reflect on how he seems to be a man before his time, but also i guess i am grateful he was born in the 1800s and not the 80s because i think if he had access to the internet he definitely would've been a chronic shitposter and not got nearly as much important science done.
