The Evolution of Style in 3D Film

I wanted to show how much theatrical animation has changed in the last few years. Incorporating 2D elements has always been attempted but was rare and went unnoticed. That’s not the case anymore with more adopting it, anime too!

People should learn at this point that just because the trailer is comedic doesn't mean the movie/show itself won't be emotional.

Something about the deep unfairness in how Chuck Harm and Press Secretary Carson were given soft deaths, metaphorically passing quietly of old age, while everyone else struggled and bled and screamed and choked. Something about the metaphor of the people in power, even if they turned kinder, even if they saw what they could have been, being offered refuge that they denied the people they ground underfoot. Something about that huh.

When Robbie is in the tail end of her elementary school years, she starts going to a sleepaway camp. She’s around nine the first time she goes and she’s nervous at first, obviously, but she ends up loving it so much that by the end of the month-long program, Steve and Eddie practically have to drag her out of the cabin.

The next year, Robbie convinces them to let her attend the entire eight-week program, which means she’s gone practically the entire summer – a goddamn score, in their opinion, because it means they only have two kids to figure out what to do all summer with instead of three.

There is, however, an unexpected opponent of this – Moe.

Moe did not like not having Robbie around for two months, and she moped around the house practically the entire summer (Steve caught her standing in front of the calendar counting the days until her return at least twice). Rather than admit that she actually loves her sister and truly misses her when she’s gone though, she resorts to the only real solution to keep her at home – implicit manipulation tactics.

Which is why Steve overhears this exchange a few months before Robbie’s departure for her third year at camp:

Moe: I would never want to do something like that.

Moe: Like, you’re going into that gross lake every day and you can’t ever shower. You never change your sheets. There’s a million people all in one room.

Moe: It’s so gross.

Robbie, shrugging: I showered basically every day.

Robbie: And I changed my sheets once a week.

Moe: Whatever.

Moe: I don’t know why anybody would want to go to one of those.

Moe: There’s way better things to do here – you don’t even know, Robbie.

Later, Steve has to have this conversation with her:

Steve: I totally get that you really miss Robbie while she’s at camp.

Steve: And I know that two months is a long time for her to be gone.

Steve: But I gotta tell you, hon.

Steve: Manipulating her into thinking she doesn’t want to go…not the best way to go about dealing with that emotion.

To all the people who say that these films are copying and/or ripping off Spider-verse because they have similar animation styles:

PLEASE SHUT THE ACTUAL HELL UP.

It legitimately aggravates me when people say that this art/media is copying this other art/media just because it committed the oh so heretical act of having common elements. Like when people say that "The Owl House is ripping off Amphibia because they have similar premises", or that "this cartoon art style is generic because bean mouths" or some shit.

As a person who still trying to grow as a digital artist, I know for a fact that creativity is not simply just conjuring up something completely different from everything else out of thin air. It's about taking certain elements and qualities and arranging and reassembling them in a way that's unique.

There's no denying that Spider-verse was nothing short of revolutionary when it came to its animation, but even though the above 4 films clearly have many things in common with Spider-verse (and each other), they each still have many other qualities and subtleties that make their animation styles stand out on their own.

In the end, all I'm saying is that just because this art/media is similar to another does not automatically mean it's less creative.

this one is minor but please quit saying that Wish's backgrounds are inspired by "watercolor backgrounds from classic Disney movies." Most classic Disney movies didn't have watercolor backgrounds. Sleeping Beauty? Not watercolor. Peter Pan? Not watercolor. Cinderella? Not watercolor.

Some concept art was done in watercolor--like Gustaf Tenggren's for Snow White--but those other movies are not watercolor.

And, watercolor or not, Wish doesn't look painted. It doesn't. It doesn't look like there's any paint anywhere. It looks like cookie-cutter digital "paintings" are getting stretched as bad material over cgi models.

It's like, some parts have detail, like the little "threads" on her sleeves that are way too big to be thread-sized...so they just look clumsy...and then other parts, like her necklace, have no detail, case barely any shadow, have no lighting...they just blur together. They just combine lack of detail with really lazy attempts at detail.

That's not a "hand-painted" look. This is hand painted:

And if you really want to rub salt in the wound, this is how you make cg art and textures that at least look or pay tribute to the look of hand-painted:

I mean geez. Look at the thin-to-thick lines drawn onto the chairs in Mitchell's vs. the Machines. Look at Death the Wolf's fur. Look at how these movies do it, and put in the work to make lines and brush strokes that do what lines and brush strokes are supposed to do, and actually look like something .

Don't even get me started on the colors.

Stop making me talk about how other animation studios are doing something Disney invented better than Disney did in their "tribute" to themselves.
