Chapter 14

INTRODUCTION.

This Second Book of Machabees is not a continuation of the history contained in the First; nor does it come down so low as the First does, but relates many of the same facts more at large, and adds other remarkable particulars, omitted in the First Book, relating to the state of the Jews as well before as under the persecution of Antiochus. The author, who is not the same with that of the First Book, has given (as we learn from chap. ii. 20., &c.) a short abstract of what Jason, of Cyrene, had written in the five volumes, concerning Judas and his brethren. He wrote in Greek, and begins with two letters, sent by the Jews of Jerusalem to their brethren in Egypt. (Challoner) --- Hence the whole book has been considered by some as an epistle. (Cotelier, Can. Ap. p. 338.) --- But it is easy to distinguish the letter from the history, (Calmet) to which a preface is prefixed, chap. ii. 20. Yet the Alexandrian copy has at the end, "A letter concerning the acts of Judas Mach.[Machabeus.]" (Haydock) --- The appendix of two epistles was added to the First Book by him who wrote the second, (Worthington) abridging the work of Jason. (Haydock)

Chapter 14

Demetrius challenges the kingdom. Alcimus applies to him to be made high priest: Nicanor is sent into Judea: his dealings with Judas: his threats. The history of Razias.

14 1 But after the space of three years Judas, and they that were with him, understood that Demetrius, the son of Seleucus, was come up with a great power, and a navy by the haven of Tripolis, to places proper for his purpose, sed post triennii tempus cognovit Iudas et qui cum eo erant Demetrium Seleuci cum multitudine valida et navibus per portum Tripoli ascendisse ad loca oportuna

14 10 For as long as Judas liveth it is not possible that the state should be quiet. nam quamdiu superest Iudas inpossibile est pacem esse negotiis

14 11 Now when this man had spoken to this effect the rest also of the king's friends, who were enemies of Judas, incensed Demetrius against him. talibus autem ab hoc dictis et ceteri amici hostiliter habentes adversus Iudam inflammaverunt Demetrium

14 12 And forthwith he sent Nicanor, the commander over the elephants, governor into Judea: qui statim Nicanorem praepositum elefantorum ducem misit Iudaeam

14 18 Nevertheless Nicanor hearing of the valour of Judas's companions, and the greatness of courage, with which they fought for their country, was afraid to try the matter by the sword. 14 24 And Judas was always dear to him from the heart, and he was well affected to the man. habebat autem semper Iudam carum ex animo erat vero inclinatus

14 26 But Alcimus seeing the love they had one to another, and the covenants, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor had assented to the foreign interest, for that he meant to make Judas, who was a traitor to the kingdom, his successor. 14 29 But because he could not oppose the king, he watched an opportunity to comply with the orders sed quia regi resistere non poterat oportunitatem observabat qua praeceptum perficeret

14 33 And swore, saying: Unless you deliver Judas prisoner to me, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and will beat down the altar, and I will dedicate this temple to Bacchus. iuravit nisi mihi vinctum Iudam tradideritis istud Dei fanum in planitiem deducam et altare effodiam et templum hoc Libero patri consecrabo

14 34 And when he had spoken thus, he departed. But the priests stretching forth their hands to heaven, called upon him that was ever the defender of their nation, saying in this manner: et his dictis abiit sacerdotes autem protendentes manus in caelum invocabant eum qui semper propugnator esset gentis ipsorum haec dicentes

14 35 Thou, O Lord of all things, who wantest nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thy habitation should be amongst us. tu Domine qui universitatis nullius indiges voluisti templum habitationis tuae fieri in nobis

14 36 Therefore now, O Lord, the holy of all holies, keep this house for ever undefiled, which was lately cleansed. et nunc sancte sanctorum omnium Domine conserva in aeternum inpollutam domum istam quae nuper mundata est

14 37 Now Razias, one of the ancients of Jerusalem, was accused to Nicanor, a man that was a lover of the city, and of good report, who for his kindness was called the father of the Jews. Razias autem quidam de senioribus ab Hierosolymis delatus est Nicanori vir amator civitatis et bene audiens qui pro adfectu pater Iudaeorum appellabatur

14 38 This man, for a long time, had held fast his purpose of keeping himself pure in the Jews' religion, and was ready to expose his body and life, that he might persevere therein. hic multis temporibus continentiae propositum tenuit in iudaismo corpusque et animam tradere contentus pro perseverantia

14 39 So Nicanor being willing to declare the hatred that he bore the Jews, sent five hundred soldiers to take him. volens autem Nicanor manifestare odium quod habebat in Iudaeos misit milites quingentos ut eum conprehenderent

14 40 For he thought by ensnaring him to hurt the Jews very much. putabat enim si illum decepisset se cladem maximam Iudaeis inlaturum

14 41 Now as the multitude sought to rush into his house, and to break open the door, and to set fire to it, when he was ready to be taken, he struck himself with his sword: turbis autem inruere domum eius et ianuam disrumpere atque ignem admovere cupientibus cum iam conprehenderetur gladio se petit

14 42 Choosing to die nobly rather than to fall into the hands of the wicked, and to suffer abuses unbecoming his noble birth. eligens nobiliter mori potius quam subditus fieri peccatoribus et contra natales suos indignis iniuriis agi

14 43 But whereas through haste he missed of giving a sure wound, and the crowd was breaking into the doors, he ran boldly to the wall, and manfully threw himself down to the crowd: sed cum per festinationem non certo ictu plagam dedisset et turbae intra ostia inrumperent recurrens audenter ad murum praecipitavit semet ipsum viriliter in turbas

14 44 But they quickly making room for his fall, he came upon the midst of the neck. quibus velociter locum dantibus casui eius venit per mediam cervicem

14 45 And as he had yet breath in him, being inflamed in mind, he arose: and while his blood ran down with a great stream, and he was grievously wounded, he ran through the crowd: et cum adhuc spiraret accensis animis surrexit cum et sanguis eius magno fluxu deflueret saucius cursu turbam pertransiit

14 46 And standing upon a steep rock, when he was now almost without blood, grasping his bowels, with both hands he cast them upon the throng, calling upon the Lord of life and spirit, to restore these to him again: and so he departed this life. et stans super petram quandam praeruptam et iam exsanguis effectus conplexus intestina sua utrisque manibus proiecit super turbas invocans Dominatorem vitae ac spiritus ut haec illi iterum redderet atque ita vita defunctus est

Ver. 1. But. Read 1 B. vii. 1. W. --- Years of Eupator's reign, or dating from the purification of the temple. --- Demetrius, to whom the crown belonged. 1 B. vii. 1.

Ver. 3. Priest, after Menelaus, (1 B. vii. 5.) but never recognized, as Judas was then pontiff. He had, moreover, voluntarily defiled himself during the times of persecution; or, according to most Gr. copies, (C.) when there was "no mixture" of Gentiles in the land to instigate him. H. --- Though he was of Aaron's stock, this apostacy rendered him ineligible; Mathathias was chosen, being also descended from Aaron, and more sincere in religion. W.

Ver. 4. Fifty, according to the Chaldee reckoning. C. ii. 21. M. --- Boughs; probably (H.) of gold, (W.) or adorned with leaves of that metal. People presented what they thought proper to the temple. The apostles admired these gifts, as well as the stones of the fabric. Lu. xxi. 5.

Ver. 6-11. Assideans: the most zealous defenders of the faith. Alcimus had slain sixty of them. 1 B. vii. 12. 19. C. --- This description, given by enemies through malice, serves to shew the zeal and sincerity of these people in promoting God's law and virtue. --- Him. See 1 B. vii. 26. Después de actuar en innumerables conciertos y de lanzar diez álbumes exitosos, Lyambiko recibió un libro de un amigo, “Mach nicht so traurige Augen, weil du ein Negerlein bist” (“No te veas tan triste solo porque estás un poco Negro”). Cuenta la historia de Marie Nejar, la hija de padres negros que creció sufriendo persecución en el Tercer Reich y que se convirtió en una estrella infantil en la nueva República Federal de Alemania en la década de 1950, cuando cantó bajo el nombre artístico de Leila Negra.

Lyambiko, hija de padre tanzano y madre alemana, redescubrió muchas canciones en la autobiografía de Marie Nejar que le habían sido familiares desde su propia infancia y que incluyeron el éxito de 1952 de Gerhard Winkler "Answer Me, My Love", que ella ha intepretado en innumerables ocasiones. El libro de Marie Nejar se convirtió en el punto de partida para un viaje de descubrimiento musical y personal. I think mach would be a good mama to pilby, but also be a bit more stern with them when needed.

Sind schulzundtebbe eine Agentur?

„Agenturen“ handeln stets im Auftrag. Die Vokabel „Agentur“ selbst wurde Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts dem italienischen „agente“ entlehnt, was für „Vertreter“, „Geschäftsträger“ oder „Geschäftsführer“ steht und dem lateinischen Verb „agere“ für „treiben“, „in Bewegung setzen“, „handeln“ oder „tätig sein“ entstammt. Bei Agenturen geht es also letztlich um das Handling von Dienstleistungen: vernetzen, verbinden, vermitteln, organisieren, dies und das.

Das Wort „Dienstleistung“ ist im Wirtschaftssprech eine Umschreibung für ein immaterielles, also nicht gegenständliches Gut, das sich immer genau dann einstellt, wenn ein Wirtschaftssubjekt für ein anderes entgeltlich wie sachzielorientiert tätig wird: „ich mache was für Dich und dafür gibt es Geld“. Schlicht und einfach.

Wortgeschichtlich fügt sich das Kompositum Dienstleistung aus den Worten „Dienst“ und „Leistung“. Der Begriff „Dienst“ leitet sich her aus Althochdeutschen dionôst, das seine Wurzeln in „dio“ findet: „der Knecht“. Der „Dienst“ gilt also weniger den eigenen Interessen, als denen des Dienstherrn. So weit so gut.

Passt das zu uns? Hm, nö. Denn dabei bleibt das wesentliche auf der Strecke.

Vor allem das, worum es hier eigentlich geht: Ausblick und Perspektive. Frische Luft und Mut zur Veränderung. Das lässt sich als Dienstleistung kaum greifen, denn der Unternehmer wird in der Parametrisierung seiner Aufgabe nur selten weit über den eigenen Tellerrand hinausschauen, um über Dinge zu sinnieren, die es in seinem Universum bislang und nicht nur eigentlich noch lange nicht gibt. Hier geht es zum Projektstart besser nicht um Visitenkarten, den Aufkleber oder ein Plakat, hier geht um den weiten Satz über die Gewohnheit. Die Umsetzung muss warten. Weil’s besser wird.

Diese empfindliche Phase der Zusammenarbeit, in der Ideen enstehen, Strategien und Konzepte, lassen sich nur sehr schwer bemaßen und in Standards pressen, die der Entwicklungsdynamik und den daraus erwachsenden Chancen diametral entgegenwirken.

Genau in dieser Phase brauchen Unternehmer einen querdenkenden Partner auf Augenhöhe. Wir ideieren, konzipieren, beraten, geben Impulse, entwickeln Strategien und modellieren Visionen. Und begleiten dann bis in die Umsetzung. Effizient mit klaren Zielen. Das ist unser Weg.

INTERVIEW: Waid & Woods Take Archie Over The Edge in Fast & Furious Arc

For a comic book publisher that has unleashed everything from zombies to assassination attempts on its main characters over the past decade, Archie Comics is taking it next level with an upcoming story arc.

Set in current, ongoing continuity as part of its flagship “Archie” title, superstar writer Mark Waid and new series artist Pete Woods are teasing that a main character will die in the “Over the Edge” storyline, which begins on May 17 in “Archie” #20.

CBR connected with Waid and Wood, who shared details about what to expect in the three-issue storyline including how long and deep cuts will run in Riverdale when the dust settles. And which characters will be cut longest and deepest.

Woods also shared his thoughts on joining the creative team, his history with the characters and his technique for drawing fast and not-so-fast cars while Waid revealed his own ‘dark’ past getting behind the wheel as an under-ager on the open road.

CBR: While both of you have a shared history telling stories with Superman, I don’t believe that you’ve actually worked together before. What is the secret origin of this creative collaboration?

Mark Waid: It was really the machinations of editor and company president Mike Pellerito. He’s had his eye on Pete for a while, and I was thrilled to have him aboard.

Pete Woods: Yup. Like Mark said — no conspiracy, just a good editor!

Mark, we know all about your history with Archie Comics but Pete, were you a fan of Archie and the Riverdale Gang growing up?

Woods: When I was a kid, I read every comic I could get my hands on, and the “Archie” books were a big part of that. When I’d read through my own stack, I’d sneak my sister’s copies of Betty and Veronica and read them.

It’s not superheroes, which you have drawn sensationally for the past 20 years, so what drew you to Archie Comics for this assignment?

Woods: There’s a ton of reasons why I jumped at the chance to work on Archie. I’ve always been a fan of Mark, so getting the opportunity to work with him was huge. I’ve also been a fan of the new “Archie” series since I read the first issue, and it was exciting to be offered the opportunity to be part of it. The place the characters hold in comic history is also a big draw. Everyone knows who Archie is, whether they’re a comic fan or not.

Mark, “Archie” #20 was going to be something entirely different but last month the solicitations changed and you tweeted that you, straight up, came up with a much, much better idea. We’ve read the new solicitations, but for those who haven’t, what’s your much, much better idea?

Waid: High stakes. Consequences to actions. “Archie” #20 brings the eternal Archie/Reggie rivalry to a new place – and it’s not pleasant for anyone in the cast. A drag race gone wrong leads to one of the kids – an important one! – rocketing off a cliff at an ungodly speed, and all of Riverdale High has to deal with the dark repercussions.

What is it about Reggie Mantle that makes him a perfect foil for Archie Andrews, not only in the “Over the Edge” storyline but in a majority of Archie’s adventures over the past 75 years?

Waid: I think what served him for decades was that he was just purely evil. There wasn’t any attempt to explain why, and I was fine with that. As I am fond of saying, I don’t care why the Grinch stole Christmas. I just want to see how the Grinch stole it. Paradoxically for good storytelling, some characters – like J. Jonah Jameson – are at their best when they’re borderline two-dimensional cartoons.

That said, we’ve been seeding scenes in previous issues that give the New Riverdale Reggie some depth as that approach fits better with what we’ve been doing and there’s a lot more to learn about him. Possibly posthumously.

Yikes! The solicitation for “Over the Edge” does tease ‘mortal danger’ and that “one of the kids looks death in the eye – and death doesn’t blink.” Is someone really going to die?

Waid:Now you’re asking me to reveal way too much. You’re just going to have to trust me. This story will fulfill your expectations.

Okay, I’m in. “The Fate of the Furious” enjoyed massive numbers its weekend. What is it that people love about fast cars?

Waid: Freedom. Flouting the rules. My uncle dabbled in racecar driving and put me behind the wheel at a blatantly illegal age. It was rural Alabama in the 1960s, so no one cared. [Laughs] It’s just such a rush. At that speed, you are wholly and totally in control of your life and death in a way like no other. And way, way to his credit, Pete brings that out beautifully in what is, traditionally, a medium not well-suited to car races.

Pete, have you been looking at any specific car models for inspiration for this story arc?

Woods: Most of the cars in the Archie series have already been established, but Mark wanted to make sure we get a ’69 Mustang Mach 1 Cobra in there. Whenever Archie’s clunker appears, I look at a model of an ’86 Mazda RX7.

I’m not great at drawing cars freehand so I use a tool called Sketchup to position 3D models how I want them and then draw based on that reference. It’s a bit easier than the old school way of buying a Hot Wheels or a plastic model and then holding that up in one hand while drawing with the other.

Betty Cooper and Dilton Doiley are both big ‘gearheads’ – as we just saw in “Archie” #18. Do they play a role in the “Over the Edge” story arc?

Waid: Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Oh, yes.

Does this new direction, courtesy of your much, much better idea, mean that the budding romance between Betty and Dilton has run its course or will it continue?

Waid: Oh, it’s still there, still progressing but like everything else in Riverdale, it’s about to hit a nasty curve.

And what about Veronica? She’s just returned from Switzerland. Has Archie lost interest in her already and now has time to worry about street races?

Waid:Exactly the opposite. Archie is, by nature, way too responsible a kid to get into a street race but it’s the speedbumps in his relationship with post-Switzerland Ronnie that gets him mixed up in this in the first place. That, and his temper, which really only comes out when Reggie gets under his skin.

Going back to the original solicitation for “Archie” #20, it was supposed to feature Cheryl Blossom going on the warpath, and her target was going to surprise us. Are we still going to get more Cheryl in the pages of “Archie”?

Waid: Oh, of course. She and her brother Jason are way too valuable to the cast, especially now that they’ve learned the secrets… I don’t want to spoil it!
