I love the fact that in every '90s and '00s sitcom having 'easily presumed as gay' qualities was mostly a joke that fandom turned into subtext almost just to give the middlefinger to homophobes

and what I love even more than that is that in always sunny the character who was dealt with that card the most was initially Dennis (which then the fandom turned into a fandomwide headcanon that Dennis had in fact had a crush on Mac when they were younger) before Mac took over the mantle by becoming a stereotypical bible-thumper, a delusional and scared closeted gay guy

and what I love even more than that is that always sunny is the first ever sitcom (to my knowledge) to turn the outdated joke-subtext into actual representation by canonising Mac's gayness

i truly see in my mind an episode about macs online boyfriend. mac comes into the bar, yelling that he has news, AMAZING news, and he gets the typical unenthusiastic reactions, but he doesnt care and announces he has a PROPER BOYFRIEND NOW. he describes this perfect boyfriend, how they have similar interests (karate and god), how he thinks mac is totally a bear and a beefcake and so hot, etc etc, and one of them asks for a picture of this Perfect Guy and mac is like. "Well technically i havent seen him yet BUT TRUST ME GUYS hes totally legit, i did a virtual ocular patdown😎". so the gang starts yelling at him about catfishes and scammers and mac rolls his eyes and says "guys, i think id know if i was getting scammed, and trust me, this isnt it-" and then you cut to the title screen and it reads "Mac Gets Scammed"

…because I think we all assumed (Dennis included) that if they ever did get together Mac would not be capable of keeping his shit together. He was always gonna be needy and desperate and non-consensually kissing Dennis.

Buuuuuut if it IS revealed later on that they’ve been banging this whole time (or at least since Frank v Russia), I’m fine if we never actually see a kiss or embrace, because watching seasons 16-18 all over again with that knowledge will feel the same as re-watching seasons 1-11 knowing that Mac’s canonically gay. Or 1-15 knowing Dennis is canonically bi. It just ✨ hits different ✨

Okay so I unknowingly got involved in some Sunny discourse earlier and um... did not mean to. Sorry.

My autistic ass saw 'Dennis hates Mac' and got frustrated BC on my tumblr feed that seems like all I see anymore and I'm tired of sifting through negative posts. It's also important to mention that I was coming at things from the 'I've been exposed to way too much r/iasip' mindset, where the discourse is entirely discouraged because people are so adamant that Dennis only hates Mac (as in, he despises him and just wants him to leave him alone always).

Anyway, given this, I feel the need to clarify the way I see their relationship, and that I definitely don't think there's no resentment on Dennis' end. Of course Mac pisses him off, because Dennis doesn't understand where all this devotion is coming from (imo). His self-esteem is so cripplingly non-existent, despite the exterior he shows, that it does genuinely baffle him that somebody could see so much worth in him.

Mac is loyal to a fault. He pursues Dennis even when the latter gives him no regard at all, and is constantly seeking his approval, which inevitably leads to more disapproval on Dennis' end.

Does this disapproval ultimately= hate? I don't know. I'm not in RCG's heads.

What I do know, though, is that sunnyblr is a mess of negativity and all I want to do is have that... not be so? Idk.

I want there to be an appreciation for the richness of this show, and when I see comments like 'Dennis hates Mac' without any context, yeah, I get fired up, because wayyyy too much of r/iasip (for example) is people shutting down Macdennis because of that exact reason and ignoring how complex their relationship really is.

There's too much discourse and I really didn't intend to make more, especially not about shipping because (and I genuinely believe this):

we know dennis really values honesty in other people but especially in mac, being truthful, being yourself, and lying to get a bf would be a huge step backwards in that for Mac, and would INFURIATE dennis

So over the course of the show, we see that Dennis is kind of a slut and gets around, but he isn't emotionally attached to literally ANY of the women he sleeps with. Not one. Not even the girl he was supposedly in love with in high school. But he's always been freakishly close to his male friends, specifically Mac, who he relies on both physically and emotionally. He's so thrown off when he's in a fight with Mac or apart from him that it's ridiculous. Mac is his primary emotional support, they've built a life together, they come up with little schemes together, they go on dates together, and when they plan for the future they do it together <3

Idk it's just kind of gay to me that he's so codependent with his gay roommate while also being unable to create such a close bond and nurturing relationship with literally any of the women he sleeps with...
