January 26th marks Australia Day.

Scots played many key parts in the story of Australia, we were convicts, soldiers and governors; orphans, free settlers and gold hunters; bushrangers, merchants and immigrants.

Although it is sometimes said of nineteenth-century Sydney that it was an English city, in contrast with the more Scottish city of Melbourne, people of Scottish origin have played important roles in the development and life of Sydney. They have been there from the very beginning.

For hundreds of years Scots have packed up their families and their belongings and sailed to Australia to start a new life.

When Australia needed workers between 1832 and 1850 about 16,000 Scots became ‘assisted immigrants’. They boarded chartered ships, like the 50-ton ship Stirling Castle, chartered from Alan Kerr and Company, Greenock, alongside skilled stonemasons, engineers, carpenters, blacksmiths and even professors. In the same period more than 20,000 Scots travelled to Australia as unassisted immigrants.

The majority of Scottish emigrants were from the Lowlands but around 10,000 Highlanders boarded chartered ships to Australia between 1837 and 1852.

The 20th century continued to see Scots migrate to Australia. In the 1920s Scots stonemasons helped to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Scots miners from Lanarkshire, Fife and Ayrshire worked in coal mines in New South Wales in the '20s and '30s. In 1929 Alexander MacRae, originally from Loch Kishorn in the Highlands, first produced the famous Australian swimming ‘cossie’ - Speedos.

In 1930 MacRobertson Chocolates created Freddo Frog. Macpherson Robertson, the founder of ‘Mac Robertson Steam Confectionery Works’ that later became simply MacRobertson Chocolates, was the son of a Scottish carpenter. He spent many of his early years in Leith and became an apprentice at a confectionery company. When his family moved back to Melbourne he started making sweets in his mother’s bathroom.

Robertson became a great philanthropist as well as a hugely successful chocolate maker. He sponsored the MacRobertson Air Race from London to Melbourne, and financed a combined British, Australian and New Zealand expedition to the Antarctic. A part of the Antarctic was named ‘Mac Robertson Land’ in his honour.

Today Freddo Frog is the most popular children’s chocolate in Australia.

After the Second World War thousands of Britons set sail for Australia. Between 1947 and 1981 more than a million Britons took advantage of an assisted passage scheme introduced by the Australian Government. Around 170,000 Scots left the country of their birth to become ‘Ten Pound Poms’ and start a new life Down Under.

During the past 24 hours there have been protests in Australia as part of a campaign to move Australia day to a date more fitting to the indigenous people of the country, names they give to January 26th include Survival Day, Invasion Day, Day of Mourning.

Gammeya Dharawal man, Jacob Morris, said there isn’t one emotion that fully captures the day.

"It's a day of teaching. It's a day of celebrating as well. We're not up there celebrating the Union Jack, we're celebrating us," he says.

But the day also reminds Jacob of the treatment of First Nations people throughout history.

"Anger … that is still what is felt today and that comes from the sadness, trauma and the hurt," he said.

The Outlander Season 7 mid-season finale ends with one specific Scots Gaelic song 🎶 a classic ballad, with deeper meaning. “Tha mi sigith ‘n fhogar seo,” or “I am weary of this exile.” This song has traditionally been attributed to John MacRae, Iain mac Mhurchaidh, who was born in Lianag a’ Chùl Doire in Kintail-a mountainous area sitting at the head of Loch Duich in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland.

After the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-6 and the crushing defeat at Culloden and its bloody aftermath, he emigrated to North Carolina around 1774. When the American War of Independence began in 1775 he joined the loyalist army, fighting with the Royal Highland Emigrants the (84th Regiment of Foot)

The Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge was fought between the United Colonies and Great Britain on February 27, 1776, near Wilmington, North Carolina, during the American Revolution. It was the first battle of the war that took place in North Carolina.

He fought at the battle of Moore’s Creek on the 27th of February, 1776. The loyalists lost and as he relates in the song, he became an outlaw who was eventually captured and imprisoned, his songs were so influential among the Carolina Gaels, he was dealt with in a particularly harsh way by the rebels.

According to tradition his Carolina songs were brought back to Scotland by another John MacRae, Iain mac a’ Ghobha of Bundaloch, Dornie. Some of Iain mac Mhurchaidh’s songs were published in the Celtic Magazine in 1882.

There's no baby news today but there are things happening several of the things that are very big they're ongoing but there are some changes

-John Riva Lord & company around revenge on all sorts of people and out loud and standing there saying anything and the people are saying it to are saying you have no right to you're messed up our business on purpose because you're an ass and then he would say we're not the ones doing it and he said yes you are and we have proof that you're the ones doing it so they started going after them and they are completing a few rounds of hits and they are going after the much harder and it's because of this shift where the people who are victimized are going after them because of it and John remillard's stuff is broken and he's complaining and to us any plan to and we go after him so it's not working for him and it's going to court again and Georgia is going to file shortly and the January 6th committee and the idiot will still run around saying that he can be president and people are going to want their money back for the campaign funding and they're going to tell him to stop shooting his mouth off it's going to start happening real soon there's one big change that occurred today he will decide to stand up for themselves against us the second thing that came up was fairly interesting

-trumpsters and some others are claiming our son for a bunch of anomalies 9 out of 10 of the people screaming at their own fall for the anomaly occurring and more today everyone was challenging them on it telling them to shut up and producing evidence they've done that for a while but it's going on all over the world everywhere and against the clothes too and we don't know it's a result of no it's a result of so many of them dying. It is a massive change and the reason is kind of complex you see that they're complete idiots and they see that they victimize people and it's hard to see but the way they're treating each other and our son is showing the difference and it's glaring

-we are also apprehending these idiots and we are torturing the s*** out of them and Tommy f is going to be back with us shortly and after a while a few more days we're going to turn my son and daughter loose on him and on this idiot and they will be in hellraiser and after that they go down fast nobody can stand that treatment and he says he's been doing it because he has good night full blown he's going to be a professional hellraiser

-tons and tons of people hate them they act like little b****** all the time to start blowing their heads off and it's happened several times and punta Gorda and it's all over the world that they give them a warning you're not to do that to me and if they keep doing it they die it's hurt all over the world too that that's what's happening tons of them are gone and it has to do with cloning a lot too.

-there's just one enough time to tell everybody about everything no but there's a lot happening and it's important couple of bigwigs rolled into town no they've been here Mac has been trying to tell them I'm going to exterminate all of you if you don't stop bothering me and pestering me and harassing me like I'm a piece of dirt haven't even pass it on so other people can do your job so you said it today and they said no. So MacRae is just hand and said he was going to strike him down trying to read my Lord left and he said screw you in the horse he came in on and a bunch of other dumb stuff that doesn't mean anything on the way out Mac was pretending to fire a gun said I hate you six times continuous pass pretended he was pissed when John greenwood said he didn't again and again and John raymore got real mad and said you made it really mad now you win he said you're actually just nuts. He had called the ambulance already been to be held off where they got there they saw him yelling at the top of the lungs neck and then he moved out and it was too late and stay there for 2 hours but they're trying to bring it back.

Emilio: Won't say much about himself, but he's good at keeping the group from getting to rowdy and is good at input.

Apollo: Average. Probably has decent input and will give say stuff he's going through.

Benjamin: Ooooo class clown. He's going to make jokes and keep the mood light, but when he actually like half jokes about his issues everyone gets really quiet

“I don’t like this.” Mac said as they trudged through the field.

“The stories intersect here.” Cole said, holding up his notebook, eyes glowing so he could read the notes he took.

“Grayson is gonna kill us.” Jacob said dismissively, arms crossed as he side stepped a dead goat.

“Somehow it’s feeding while being trapped.” Cole said and looked at his best friends, ignoring them.

“Cole, why are we seeking out some local legend?” Jacob whined.

“Um.” Cole turned, looking excited. “Local legend? This isn’t baby powder handprints on the car trunk, Jake, this is something Inferi fear.”

“The Inferi might still not know earth creatures. Remember what Bloomi said about her ancestors worshipping a scream and finding out it was an elk?” Mac asked.

“Ancestors. Past tense. And Inferi can use the internet. Just cause they’re from another plane of existence, doesn’t mean their dumb.”

“The smartest person in our age group is technically Toffee and he’s only half Inferi.” Jacob supported.

“Still!” Mac said. “If these beings who come in all shapes and sizes and can kill a human super easy even as toddlers…are scared of this demon thing, well, why are we actively looking for trouble, again?” Mac asked.

“Because it could help Grayson get his powers back!” Cole said. “You know, minus the tearing us up and eating us like supernatural fruit roll ups.”

“How do you know that?” Jacob asked.

“I don’t know. I just…something hummed in my head the first time I heard it. And it gets louder when Paige and I brainstorm about Grayson’s current state.” Cole said. “I really need to see this through. I heard he was buried around here somewhere.”

“Who is he?” Mac asked.

“Mac, he’s told us several times. Its some tragic lover searching for his wife from Inferis. He was caught by a bunch of crazy religious types who bound him in silver and encased him in an iron coffin, then dropped him at the bottom of a lake that was blessed into holy water.” Jacob said. “Rather romantic.”

Mac made a face.

“Romantic…”

“it’s said he never stopped screaming for his lost love and I checked the old microfilms.” Cole said excitedly. “This use to be a lake before two droughts killed it off. He’s somewhere around here.”

“We didn’t bring shovels!” Mac yelled.

“I just want to see if we can mark it for next time.” Cole said. “I still need to find out the lover. It’s said a drop of their blood, or even someone of their blood can awake the demon!”

“Are you—Cole, it’s getting late, and we have work tomorrow.” Jacob sighed. “Grayson will not let us off easy just cause we’re quote unquote ‘researching’. In fact, he might get pissed we didn’t ask permission and bring Toffee or Paige.”

“But I—” Cole tripped over a rock suddenly and fell, groaning.

“Ah, geez!” Mac said and kneeled next to him, taking off his shirt and holding to Cole’s bleeding nose.

“Ow!” Cole whined. “I think I split my lip too!”

Jacob kneeled next to him, checking him over as blood dripped onto the earth under them. He sighed.

“It should heal itself by tomorrow. I think this is a sign to wrap up tonight.”

“But I—”

“Cole.” Jacob said.

“Fine.” Cole said.

They helped him up and he held the shirt out, the bleeding have had stopped by now. Mac dropped it on the ground and sighed.

“Next time, I’ll have all the info. And the supplies.” Cole said.

“Great. Let’s get back to the shop.” Mac said. “I need a shower and some sleep.”

“I’ll drive then.” Jacob joked.

“Excuse you, no one touches my baby…”

“Come off it Mac…”

Their voices fades as the blood dripped down, staying together and liquid as if propelled downward and hitting rusty iron with a crack. It oozed in, finding slightly corroded silver and a near skeletal being. It slid into the cracked dry lips and onto a rock like object that had once been a tongue.

The rock softened, moistened and suddenly, it was like it was being hydrated. Ever so slowly, yet only over the course of only a few hours, a clawed hand burst through the earth and clutched the discarded shirt. A head with dark shaggy hair following as it brought the shirt to it’s ghoulish face and sniffed it, silver eyes glaring out in the night.

“Found ya, Darlin’…”

Current progress update: • Acts of Service - at around 50% done and not sure how I feel. • Revolting Prostitutes - so far this current book club read is great. • Case Study - I just started this and I already can't put it down! • Penge & Bacon - I love this even if I'm reading it at a snail's pace.

I'm a mostly physical book reader (nothing truly beats it!) and I mostly have a fiction and a non-fiction book on the go at any one time.

I've recently been getting back into ebooks again because it's sometimes a little more convenient and with the change of the seasons, it can sometimes feel nice to change up the format I'm reading in. If I fall in love with the book, I always buy the physical book anyway, sooo I'm never missing out!

Finally, I've usually got a Danish book ongoing too, even if I am a little slow compared to my English reads. So, my stack of 'currently reading' is usually 4 books at a time (or thereabouts).

The Scottish actor Archibald Duncan was born in Glasgow on 26th May 1914.

His father was a regimental sergeant major and his mother a postmistress. He was educated at Govan High School and afterwards and worked as a welder in the Glasgow shipyards.

It was at the Citizens Theatre Company that Duncan joined the training ground of many Scottish actors including, Molly Urquart, Duncan Macrae, Gordon Jackson and Eileen Herlie. He then made his Scottish acting debut in Juno and the Paycock, playing all three gunmen, at Glasgow's Alhambra in May 1944.

Duncan went on to star in London's West End with the likes of the great Scottish character actor Alistair Sim and the late George Cole. Film roles started to follow with , Floodtide , The Gorballs Story, The Elusive Pimpernel, Green Grow the Rushes, Henry V, The Lavender Hill Mob, You're Only Young Twice and Walt Disney's The Story Of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men as 'Red Gill' amongst many others. Duncan also teamed up with Richard Todd and James Robertson Justice in Disney’s Rob Roy the Highland Rogue as Dugal Mac Gregor.

One of Duncan's first big TV roles was as Inspector Lestrade in the 1954 series Sherlock Holmes, but perhaps Archibald Duncan is best remembered for his second Robin Hood role, where 6'2" Duncan played Little John alongside Richard Greene in The Adventures of Robin Hood which ran for 143 episodes on ITV here and CBS in the states from 1955 to 1959. I just had a wee look and many of the episodes are on Youtube.

Duncan's portrayal of Little John would be fondly remembered decades later for his combination of strength, skill and humour. It was during the filming this unforgettable series that this Scottish gentle giant proved to be a true hero and managed to prevent a runaway horse from hurtling towards a group of spectators, consisting of mainly children, watching close by. For this brave feat, he was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery and £1,360 in "damages". But it also resulted in him missing the recording of eleven episodes of Robin Hood. So between times, a replacement was found in fellow Scotsman, Rufus Cruickshank.

Another great Scottish film he appeared in was Ring of Bright Water. Archie Duncan's career in television production carried on with parts in programmes like Z Cars, Hereward the Wake, Orlando, Black Beauty and Bootsie and Snudge.

Sadly in 1978 he suffered a massive stroke which caused paralysis down his right side. Sadly he passed away at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, London aged 65 on 24th July 1979.

Peter Mac Cancer Centre:

 Carlton FC and Collingwood posted a video on both of their social media pages, with both the coaches of the clubs, Michael Voss and Patrick Macrae respectively. The social media post consists of both of the coaches explain the Peter Mac cancer centre and where to donated ahead of the massive game between Carlton and Collingwood.

 The leaders of the campaign were the Carlton and Collingwood football clubs and the Peter Mac Foundation and the coaches of the clubs. The major tool being used was a short video clip and some text providing more information about the cause and the game. Fans interacted and saw the post across both Carlton and Collingwood social media pages.

 This was a great way to promote the Peter Mac Cancer Centre as both Carlton and Collingwood both have gathered a large following across their social media accounts, this give them the opportunity to promote the cause they are representing.
