One reason why Agents of SHIELD is one of the more interesting Marvel/MCU projects out there is that you can pinpoint the moment where Marvel started to lose interest in the show and gave more creative freedom to the showrunners. Because at the start, it was just a glorified vehicle to advertise Phase 2. There was the direct tie-in to Iron Man 3 and the Thor: The Dark World episode.
But then, near the end of season 1 and throughout season 2, you can tell that Marvel Studios started to care less and less about the show and, thus, gave more leeway to the showrunners to do what they want. And this slowly led to the show becoming darker, edgier, and grittier. I think since the show was starting to become less of a season-long commercial for the movies, the showrunners didn’t have to be so family friendly anymore.
Let me put it like this. In season 1, you had an episode where Fitz and Simmons were working on pranks to do on the crew. Also, Skye being outed as a cosplayer and the gag scene where Fitz got stuck at a door.
In season 4, the season literally starts with a Daisy Johnson panty shot, followed by Ghost Rider murdering white supremacists. It’s not even subtle violence, a character gets covered in someone else’s blood, with the implication that Ghost Rider tore that dude’s neck or something.
If you weren’t there at the time, I can’t stress enough just how different the show felt when season 4 came along.

Phil: Agent Romanoff what are you doing? Natasha: Wrapping Barton’s desk in Saran Wrap. Phil: Uh why? Natasha: He stole my one of my knives. Phil: Couldn’t you have just taken it back? Natasha: I couldn’t find it so I removed all sharp objects from the office so he has to either unwrap it by hand or use my knife. He’s a dumbass so he’ll use my knife which is when I will steal it back and he is left to unwrap it by hand as punishment for stealing my knife in the first place. Phil: That is actually genius. Natasha: Yes. It is.

2012 Avengers was the best Avengers era and I stand by that.
It gave us Air Vents Clint Barton, Pop Tarts Thor, Coulson Lives fics, and so many more awesome stuff revolving around the life in Avengers Tower that I get sad every time I remember none of it was real because they decided the only option was for them to fight all the time.

So, I'm watching Agents of Shield (I'm currently almost finished with s2) and I just want to talk about the fight between Coulson and Cal in ep 10. Because I am just obsessed with the move that Coulson does. It's the classic "wrap your legs around your opponent's neck" move.
I just love this moment because I only ever see women do this move, never men. And I feel like that's because this move is mostly meant to emphasize the kind of femme fatale sexiness that most female action characters are written with. It's like "ooo see how close she has to get her body/crotch to the guy she's beating up? Isn't that hot?".

Okay, so I'm watching Agents of Shield for the first time (I'm still early in season 1) and I'm finally putting together that Nat and Clint were actually Shield Agents before becoming Avengers and now I really wanna know if they had high enough clearance to know that Coulson lived.

I don’t know why, but I’m feeling oddly nostalgic for the good ole days when “Agents of SHIELD” was still premiering. I mean, today, it has a fairly solid reputation as a sci-fi action superhero show. But if you only started watching after the show ended, you have no idea just how much drama this show created. There’s like…whole arcs of drama with AOS. I actually kinda miss the drama, it was lowkey fun to follow.
Off the top of my head, there was the:
* “1st season is complete garbage, why is this even a thing” arc.
* “Stand With Ward” arc. Just…Grant Ward in general.
* “Jemma has a space boyfriend/the creators ruined Fitzsimmons” arc.
* “10 PM time slot is gonna kill this show” arc.
* “Fandom hates that Fitz has a Nazi Doctor alter ego” arc
* “Is this show even canon after season 5” arc
* “This show wants to be X-Men so bad with the Inhuman persecution” arc
* “Did the show blow its budget? Where are the lights?” arc (subplot: Ghost Rider really ate up the budget, that’s why we could only afford Gabriel Luna for 9 out of 22 episodes)
* “Season 6 was really fucking weird” arc
* “Fuck this show for killing Fitz. Wait, I forgot he’s technically not completely dead” arc.
* “Fuck this show for teasing which main member of the team will die in the S3 finale” arc (side note: the drama from this was milked so much that I remember Marvel actually made a poll in which you got to vote who you think was gonna die. Lincoln won the poll, followed by Fitz.)
* “I hate how the show just forgot that Daisy used to be Skye the hacker. It’s like they completely erased Skye from the canon in favor of the comic character. She doesn’t feel like the same character anymore.” arc (yes, this was an actual complaint I saw from people at the end of season 2/the beginning of season 3)
Ah…good times, good times. Marvel TV show drama nowadays feels much less interesting in my opinion. AOS was a drama goldmine.
