Ukrainians board the Kherson-Kyiv train at the Kherson railway station, southern Ukraine, Monday, November 21, 2022. 🎶 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗡 𝗠𝗬 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 🎵
Hey everyone! 🌟 Today, I had the pleasure of discovering an extraordinary band that is pushing the boundaries of music in the most captivating way. Allow me to introduce you to the enchanting trio known as Exploring Birdsong! 🎹✨
Their latest album, "Dancing in the Face of Danger," is an absolute triumph that showcases their beautifully curious blend of pop-sensibility, delicacy, experimentation, and heaviness. It's a musical journey like no other, led by the mesmerizing sound of the piano and supported by a guitar-less arrangement that sets them apart from the rest. 🎶🔥
Recorded and mixed at the renowned Northstone Studios in Bridgend, this album builds upon the musical foundations of their previous work, "The Thing With Feathers." With each track, the band takes us deeper into their evolving musical landscape. Synthesizers and a live string section add texture and gravity to the piano-led core, creating an immersive experience that transcends conventional boundaries. 🌌🎵
One of the most fascinating aspects of "Dancing in the Face of Danger" is how each track tells its own tale. While the album isn't conventionally conceptual, Exploring Birdsong's lyrics invite you to embark on a journey through their storytelling. It's a testament to their artistry and ability to create music that resonates on both emotional and intellectual levels. 📖💫
I'm also thrilled to share the talented individuals behind this musical masterpiece. The music and lyrics were crafted by the exceptional trio of Lynsey Ward, Jonny Knight, and Matt Harrison.
So, my friends, join me in celebrating the brilliance of Exploring Birdsong and their groundbreaking album. Let their music whisk you away to a world where genres blur, emotions run wild, and melodies resonate deep within your soul. 🙌🎶

The Last Links of 2021 (plus a story)!
The Last Links of 2021 (plus a story)!
It’s finally happening. After 365 days that felt more like a decade, 2021 is drawing to a close. It’s been a rough one for all of us, myself very much included, but it’s also been a learning experience. One of the things I’m starting 2022 with is a new sense of profound gratitude for the little things I used to take for granted—falling snow, warm clothing, Zoom meetups with dear friends and…

Ambient Jazz Ensemble - London Fields - “ambient” is a misnomer; “cinematic” is more apt (but there’s already a Cinematic Orchestra) and this new album is a prime example of it.
London Fields describes London energy, vibe, anticipation; ‘fields' of electricity. The phrase conjours something of my own relationship with London. Having moved away after living & working there for 20 years I’ve recently fallen in love with the city again. I've been walking the streets, rediscovering it’s parks, canals, the architecture, the river; … & experiencing new music in London is always a joy. The 'London Fields’ have recaptured my imagination. There are other pieces in the jigsaw conspiring to influence the concept too. The piano & Rhodes session for the last album, Aura, was at Sam Crowe’s studio in the Hackney area called London Fields, & I used the overground alighting at London Fields station. The novel 'London Fields’ by Martin Amis is my favourite fiction novel. Partly to evolve the sound palette & partly as a result of the overall concept there is less use of the ethnic tuned percussion that featured on ‘Aura’, those sounds that have survived are mixed into the ambient soundscapes or are more orchestral in nature. The exotic nature of these textures has been covered by some incredible evocative vocals by singer Lynsey Ward. It was great to work with Ollie Weston (Saxes) & Sam Crowe (piano & Rhodes) again & even more of a joy to work with my son, Sam (drums), where we had the luxury of time to experiment with a variety of miking techniques on 2 vintage drum kits. On this album Ollie & I have adopted a method of recording super soft saxes, usually tenor & alto panned hard left & hard right with bass clarinet down the middle. It’s a technique that has spilled over from our experiments on ‘Aura’. The timbre is super breathy & very quiet; it’s a texture you can hear on ‘Break The Night With Silence’ & ‘Aura’. On this album, although used sparingly, this seductive sound is quite a feature & even doubles the horn section in the verse of ‘When The Dust Settles’.

Jodie Turner-Smith said: “I am so excited to join these exciting filmmakers in bringing the story of one of history’s most controversial queens to the screen. Delving deeper into Anne Boleyn’s immense strengths while examining her fatal weaknesses and vulnerabilities, Eve’s scripts immediately captured my imagination. In the hands of Lynsey Miller, the legend of this formidable queen and fierce mother will be seen as a deeply human story that is still so relevant for today. I look forward to bringing my heart and spirit into this daring retelling of the fall of this iconic woman.”
Faye Ward and Hannah Farrell, creative directors for Fable Pictures, added: “Eve’s drama challenges all the conventions of who we think Anne Boleyn was and shines a feminist light on her story. We’re absolutely thrilled to have the magnetic Jodie Turner-Smith on board to encapsulate Anne’s determination to be an equal among men and to pave a path for her daughter. We feel that history has side-lined the voice of this ambitious Queen in favour of the men who brought her down, and that Lynsey Miller’s beautiful, intimate vision will put Anne’s gaze at the heart of the piece.”
Channel 5 controller Ben Frow, who is also director of programs at ViacomCBS, added: “It is no secret that I’m a huge Anne Boleyn fan and we know she’s a proven success as a subject with factual and film audiences. This project re-frames her story as a propulsive psychological thriller, told from a new perspective, with top talent like Jodie Turner-Smith attached. It was simply too irresistible to say no to and I’m very excited to see the finished product.”
The cast also includes Amanda Burton (“White House Farm”), Paapa Essiedu (“Murder on the Orient Express”), Thalissa Teixeira (“ The Musketeers”), Barry Ward (“Jimmy's Hall”) and Jamael Westman (“Hamilton - Original London Cast”).

In Ukraine, female war reporters build on legacy of pioneers
Clarissa Ward interrupted her live TV report on Ukrainian refugees to help a distraught older man, then a woman, down a steep and explosion-mangled path, gently urging them on in their language. A day later, Lynsey Addario, a photographer for The New York Times, captured a grim image of a Russian mortar attack’s immediate outcome: the bodies of a mother and her two children crumpled on a road,…
