I finished my first playthrough of Veilguard. Not going to get into spoilers but here are more of my Rooks that I plan on playing.

Lydia Thorne: She is the daughter of my favorite warden, Aurora Amell, and Alistair. I headcanon that Thorne is a name she uses to hide who her family is. Once people find out she's the daughter of the Hero of Ferelden, people just don't treat her the same.

Rucara (her nicknames are either Rook or Cara) Ingellvar: She is the sweetest, purest being in Thedas lol. She's supposed to be the reincarnation of Ciara, my Warden Surana who made the Ultimate Sacrifice back in DA:O

Tamrin Aldwir: Tamrin is headcannoned to be if Lyna Mahariel and Tamlen had gotten together and had a daughter. (Can you tell I am obsessed with my wardens?). She has her father's reckless curiosity and her mother's kind nature.

And for funsies, I am throwing in another couple pictures of Carwyn de Riva because I love her so much. I genuinely love her more than the Inquisitor which is somewhat surprising to me. Girl can't take anything seriously.

Prompt 6 :: Halcyon

"Tell me again," Mordred said into the quiet peace of sunset, as light and shadow danced on the wall of the Baldesion Annex's living room. "Of those halcyon days you missed, Raha. When you brought them up in the Crystal Tower, before I faced Elidibus."

G'raha looked up from his book. He glanced across the room at his friend, unable to disguise his concern. Mordred had been in one of his rare "I don't want to get out of bed today" moods since this morning, and was even now nothing more than a pile of blankets on the opposite couch. Yet to ask him what was wrong had felt...

It had felt almost scary. So G'raha and Krile had taken turns keeping the pile of blankets company, like this.

And finally, it had spoken.

G'raha gathered his thoughts for a moment longer, then put his book aside and went to sit on the edge of Mordred's couch.

"The very first time I saw you in the flesh, it was in the Black Shroud," he began, voice melodic, like when he was telling little Lyna a story. "You had dispatched some boars on your own. I had half a mind to draw my bow and assist you, since I did not realize until it was too late that you bore only a staff. Mages and charging beasts are usually a poor mix."

The pile of blankets shifted. The very tip of a black feline ear poked out, flicking back and forth. G'raha chuckled, letting his tail curl around the soft layers behind him.

"Do you ever wonder how you look from afar?" he mused. "A flick of your staff, like the conductor of an orchestra, and icicles burst forth from the earth to drive the boars away. The twist and warp of aether in the air as you wove them into flame and lightning -- ah, I knew at once you were not someone to be trifled with."

G'raha paused here.

After a moment, he asked, "You knew where I was, did you not? With your keen aether senses, you must have."

"You were in a tree," Mordred replied.

"I...do admit to liking high places."

"How you got up there was a mystery to me." Mordred finally pulled the blankets away from his face and squinted vaguely at the ceiling, like he was looking right back into the past, seeing without eyes the interloper in the trees. "Even at the Ixali logging grounds -- How did you even get down, after that?"

G'raha coughed into his fist, embarrassed.

"Were those really the days of old that you missed?" Mordred asked him. "When we weren't talking yet?"

"Hold on. I'm getting there." G'raha's tail thumped on the blankets. Despite himself, however, it was a good few seconds before he could bear to continue: "I'm sure it's patently and pathetically obvious, but I-- you-- Back then, I was as dazzled by your reputation as anyone else.

"When Rammbroes permitted us to explore the Crystal Tower only to tell me I must stay behind, it was like my heart was crushed. I wanted to talk to you, you see. I wondered what it would be like up close, to bear the intensity of your strength and magic. To think that you would grant me your company over something as simple as questions and... and porridge..."

It was hard to keep talking. There was a G'raha Tia, two lifetimes ago, who drank in the attention and friendship the Warrior of Light had given him without a single thought of what it might mean. Mordred Surana who had but one friend, for all that he had many acquaintances. Mordred Surana, who was a stranger by design to his closest associates. Who sought G'raha out over trivialities, who sat and listened for hours as G'raha rambled on and on about Allag's earliest ages.

...Who, to Rammbroes' chagrin, snuck G'raha away to the Black Shroud for a whole week, so they could look at Amdapor's ruins. Just because G'raha had confessed to him that the lack of progress on untangling the Crystal Tower's mysteries at the time was wearing on his nerves.

It was staggering, looking back, how much Mordred had overtly and persistently favored him. If it had been anyone else, if their friendship wasn't colored by the nuances that it was, G'raha would have gone to grounds over embarrassment of his own obliviousness...

Even now he might. Ugh.

"You met me at a bad time in my life," Mordred said now, drawing G'raha out of his own spiral. "It was a weird time, too. I've wiped clean the imperials and protected my home, and everyone was singing my and Theodore's praises to the high heavens. Yet, in that storm of victory-fervor, I couldn't find any relief. My friends were still dead. My life was still marred. I was trying to swallow the truth that no matter how many of the imperials I killed, how many of their children's children I curse, the things of mine that they destroyed can't be restored."

This grief was old. It was a scar. Disfiguring as it was, ugly and jagged as the edges were, when Mordred gave it voice and bared it to G'raha like this, he only sounded weary. The nerves were dead. It was just the scar itself that must be the totality of all it represented -- what was gouged out, and what healing had taken place, and what it left in its wake.

G'raha tucked his hand under the blanket and patted around until he wrapped it around a wiry wrist, Mordred's skin furnace-hot from the cocoon of layers.

"I hope that I was able to ease things for you for awhile," he said quietly. "And I am still sorry -- that I left you behind. It was not until... not until I was awakened by the Ironworks that I knew what that felt like."

"What grief felt like?" Mordred asked him.

G'raha squeezed his wrist in lieu of an answer.

"I wish you needn't have known it," Mordred said. "And then to have to carry on as you did. But, you know -- thank you. That you met me where you did."

You mentioned DA roleplaying and I have to ask, how is that done? Do you use your characters from games? Make up a less important oc? Self insert?

So back in the day I was on three different invionsfree forums that were more or less ran and populated by the same core of people. A couple people were on one that weren't on another but the main players were all present on each one. Honestly, I might still follow some of them on my main tumblr but it's been so many years and so many url changes that I do not know who any of them are anymore lmao. Anyway the subject of the RP changed based on the forum. Picking up a canon character or Warden Origin was done with an application. It was generally first come first serve. To play an OC you just made the character and ran with it. The beauty of forums meant that many threads could be going on at once and simply placed in a time line. This could all be meticulously organized so it really ended up feeling like you were one of many moving pieces in a puzzle. You could have NPCs that weren't yet in the story actually playing out what we knew them to be doing at the time of XYZ event in the game. Like on Reckoning while the Warden group was in Redcliff we were playing out Uldred's rebellion in a thread called, so very cleverly, "Breaking Circle". The three forums were as follows.

Reckoning: A re imagining of Origins with every origin surviving and every character from the franchise somehow in Ferelden to stop the blight. It was a mix of OCs and canon characters. I played Neria Surana. There was also a Solona Amell. We split the origin between us. Neria was the one that ratted Jowan out to my boy Irving. Solona was the one that actually liked Jowan. I believe we had Solona go to Ostagar with Wynne while Neria was excused from her business with Jowan bc the timeline shifted it closer to Uldred's nonsense. I was around for the start of this one and while Tabris is and shall always be my main Warden Surana is close to my heart simply bc I enjoyed being *this* Surana. Somnium: An Au. I went to college around the time this one was starting so I actually don't remember it's premise very well. It had something to do with the fade. I was Lyna Mahariel for all of probably four posts.

I forgot what we called the forum for DA2, but it was a standard playthrough of DA2 + some OCs. I played an OC named Elain who was the inspiration for the Inquisitor that was the liveblog at the beginning to this blog . A dalish elf who was taken away from her clan by a group of handsome apostates who she quickly realized would be the death of her. Admittedly, I do not think Elain was my best work in retrospect. Inquisition improved what was a poor character to begin with. A lot of contrived paper thin justifications for why she shared my opinions about various things that by all means she should not have shared. I was also in the middle of my Conservative Deprogramming so the takes were not hot. I was the designated "unpleasant character enjoyer" and therefore the only one that could play Petrice and Marethari straight. I understand Petrice. She is abhorrent but I understand her. Defending Marethari as a fool but maybe not the devil incarnate prepared me for being a Solas enjoyer.

If I were to make one now the premise I'd probably go with is "Inquisition agents doing the war table missions" with the honored Canon character positions being Sutherland and his posse, any named Inquisition agent in a war table briefing and any given member of The Chargers. Special mentions for Rylen, Charter and whoever the hell ran the base you can take in the other Orlesian map.

As for how people RP DA NOW?

Fuck if I know man. This was all happening in 2011. I've been out of the creating things part of the fandom for years. If anyone still RPs in DA give me a call and the low down.

Lyna Mahariel, Saoirse Tabris, Alet Surana, Natia Brosca, Daria Aeducan, Elissa Cousland

LYNA MAHARIEL:

What was Mahariel’s relationship like with their clan mates? (Ashalle, Tamlen, Merrill, Fenarel, Paivel, Marethari…) Lyna, while very quiet and seemingly closed off, loves her clan. She’s a complete momma’s girl with Ashalle, Tamlen and Merrill are her best friends, there really isn’t anyone she particularly dislikes. There are those she disagrees with or what-not, because the clan is big and has a lot of different people with different personalities, but in general, she loves them. They all accepted her when she came out without question, and she’s never felt unloved or unwanted.

What was Mahariel’s response to coming across the three humans? How did they react to the repercussions of whatever their decision was with Marethari? She just wanted them to go away. She stopped Tamlen from killing them because she just wanted the humans to leave the clan alone, and attacking them definitely would not have accomplished that. She was sad that the clan had to leave anyway, even though she tried making peace.

What was going through Mahariel’s mind while exploring the elven ruins? She wasn’t thrilled about going. It seemed dangerous, she honestly didn’t trust the humans, and she had wanted to go back and tell the clan first. What they found was fascinating and she did want to know more, but she wanted to learn more somewhere else.

Did Mahariel ask Ashalle about their parents? If so, what did Mahariel think of hearing about the story, after all this time? If not, what do they think happened? Lyna did ask. It was the first time she’d ever felt unwanted, that she wasn’t enough. She still had the clan, and that was far more important to her, because they had never abandoned her, but... it still hurt. Her mother couldn’t have known Lyna would be accepted the way she was. And, it makes her wonder if her mother would have accepted her, even after she came out.

Did Mahariel join in with Hahren Paivel’s history lesson? If so, how did they handle it? If not, why? She did. She likes kids! Passing down that story to them was good! She was very serious about it, because it’s important to her.

Did Mahariel stop to talk to Pol? If so, what was their reaction to hearing his story about escaping punishment for thievery? Did this affect Mahariel’s view of their kin in the cities? She had never really thought about the elves in the cities before, honestly. They were kind of just... *over there* and while she assumed it wasn’t great living with the humans, she never had much reason to think of the specifics. She felt a bit guilty for it, after - no one in the clan would have to resort to stealing to get what they needed, shouldn’t that be how it is anywhere? She doesn’t have any problem welcoming him into the clan, in the end.

What was Mahariel’s first impression of Duncan? Did this change? Nervous. He’s a pretty big and tough, well-armed human, and she was pretty sick when she actually met him. She’s still a bit anxious around him by the time they leave, but if the keeper trusts him, Lyna will.

Did Mahariel join Duncan willingly, or did he have to “drag them kicking and screaming?” She was not willing, but she didn’t really fight him on it. She didn’t want to leave the clan, at all, it terrified her, it was all she’d ever known - but she didn’t want them to have to watch her die, either.

How did Mahariel handle the fast introduction to the world outside their clan? It was very, very jarring. She was used to living in a community, where everyone at least knew each other, but Ostagar was a bunch of strangers with next to no connection to each other. They’d made friends at the camp, but that was different. The Wardens were... close to what she was looking for, but then they all died. It’s why she basically “adopted” Alistair right after Ostagar; he’s her people. Even if they disagree a lot and he thinks she’s rude because, well, she is. Their growing group of companions definitely helps.

How did Mahariel feel about Zathrian’s clan, and their situation with the werewolves? She felt at home again - it wasn’t her clan, but they weren’t so different, being from the same region. She believed Zathrian without question; he’s a keeper, he’s just trying to protect the clan, obviously. And from what the clan was saying, he was a good keeper. There was no reason not to trust him. She was a bit heartbroken at his story, even though she didn’t agree with his methods. By that point, she’d met a lot of humans, and it didn’t feel right. Not that she felt his anger was misplaced, but... His revenge was hurting him. It was hurting people who weren’t involved in what caused him to create the curse. Most importantly, it was hurting the clan. She couldn’t let him keep hurting them, though she did try to convince him peacefully.

SAOIRSE TABRIS:

What was Tabris’ relationship with their family like? (Cyrion, Adaia, Shianni, Sorris…) Much like Lyna, Saoirse is a complete daddy’s girl. She mostly liked the combat training because it meant being closer to her mother. There are very few moments she’s not with Shianni, and even fewer she’s not with Sorris. Family is important to her.

How did Tabris handle being told of their arranged marriage? She was happy. Sad to leave home, yes, but it was exciting! She could start her own family, help her community, and it felt like she was truly an adult. The idea of not being able to choose her own spouse wasn’t... great, but she trusted her father.

How did Tabris react to meeting their betrothed? Not quite the “love at first sight” she’d hoped for, but Nelaros was a good man. Saoirse had no problem marrying him.

Did Tabris have any knowledge or ideas about the Dalish? Did they believe they were real, or a myth? No idea. They’re kind of just something she heard about, but didn’t really believe were true. Sure, there might be elves living outside the cities and villages, but not that many, right?

Did Tabris stop to talk with the children playing? If so, how did they handle the children saying they didn’t know any elven heroes? She did talk to them. It made her a little sad, but... she didn’t know any either. It was just something she lived with. 

How did Tabris respond to Vaughn harassing the elven women? To he and his men crashing the wedding? She tried to convince him to go away nicely, to keep him from starting more conflict. At the wedding itself, it was too late to de-escalate, so she tried just giving herself up instead, thinking if she didn’t struggle, he’d leave the others alone. She was wrong, but she still tried. She was just desperate to keep Vaughn from lashing out at everyone else.

If Tabris was kidnapped, what was their plan before Sorris showed up? If Tabris launched a rescue mission, what was their motivation to do so like? She... really didn’t have a plan. If a chance to escape arose she’d help the others get out, but she didn’t know how she could do that. She was mostly just terrified and trying to get through it with as little harm as possible.

Did Tabris kill Vaughn or accept his money? Why? Killed. The moment she had an opportunity. What he did to Shianni was unforgivable. 

What was growing up in the alienage like for Tabris? How did they feel about having to leave? She liked the alienage. Her family was there, her friends were there, it was her community. She didn’t like leaving, especially knowing there would be more backlash against them for what happened once she was gone. She’d saved them for the moment, saved Sorris, but it wouldn’t last, and she couldn’t help them.

How did Tabris feel about returning to the alienage, and finding slavery? She had been happy to return at first. Anora said there was trouble in the alienage, but what would she know - what the humans considered trouble was usually just the elves trying not to be murdered. Saoirse could go home, see her cousins, see her father, and introduce Zevran to them. She was not prepared for what she found. She’d expected the violence from the humans at first, but the Tevinters? Slavery? The least shocking part was that Loghain was condoning it. She was never more relieved than when she found her father alive.

ALET SURANA:

Did Surana/Amell have any memories of their life before the Circle? If so, what of? If not, how did they feel about not knowing where they’re from? Alet... sort of remembers aer home. Ae remembers the incident that led to aer being taken away - ae had accidentally cast a force spell while upset and pushed aer mother into a wall. Ae remembers that aer parents loved aer. That’s... really it. It bothers aer, but not too much. The Circle was aer new home, and ae remembers the Circle. Aer memory of aer parents could be entirely wrong - what if they were actually awful? Ae would never know. But ae knows Jowan is practically aer family, knows Anders is one of aer best friends, knows Irving cares about aer.

What was Surana/Amell’s relationship with Jowan like? What did they think of the revelation of him being a blood mage? Practically siblings. Alet is bratty and annoying at times, and Jowan is one of the only people who not only tolerates it but can get aer to stop. Ae wasn’t upset about him being a blood mage. It’s not like ae had never thought about it aerself. What upset Alet was that he lied about it, and ae couldn’t actually help him. Ae was more upset to find out that Irving had manipulated the whole thing, and later that Loghain had taken advantage of Jowan. Alet would have recruited Jowan to the Wardens in a heartbeat if given the chance.

How prepared was Surana/Amell for their Harrowing? Pretty prepared. Ae’s a prickly, annoying jerk, and ae knows how to say no. It was a surprise, because it’s meant to be, but ae wasn’t at risk of failing. Ae wouldn’t let aerself fail.

What was Surana’s/Amell’s reaction to first entering the Fade? It was jarring. Real, but not, everything depended on Alet thinking about it hard enough... It was control Alet wasn’t used to. And ae liked it.

Did Surana/Amell believe in “Mouse?” What did they think of his story? Alet believed Mouse, but knew something was up. After the Rage demon was defeated and Mouse started going off about how great Alet was, aer suspicions were confirmed, and ae shut him down fast. Ae felt bad for “Mouse”, but not for Pride.

How did Surana/Amell feel about living in the Circle? It was all ae could remember, ae didn’t have anything to compare it to. It was just how things were. Ae couldn’t escape like Anders had, because of aer disability, so ae planned on just making the best of it. The Templars were, for the most part, easy to manipulate to at least keep aerself and aer friends safe and alive. If ae secretly wanted to escape and be free anywhere else, ae never said it - what was the point in wishing for something that could never happen?

Did Surana/Amell favour a particular Fraternity? What did they think about Circle politics in general? Closer to Libertarian, but ends up leaning to Aequatarian. It all seems pointless to Alet; as Libertarian as ae might be, it’s never going to happen, so why bother being open about it and opening aerself to being hurt? It isn’t that Alet wants the Chantry and Templars having control over aer - ae hates it - but there really doesn’t seem like any other option. When it seems to really be a possibility, ae becomes more open about it, and supports the rebellion.

How did Surana/Amell feel about working with tranquil mages? Alet feels bad for them - it must be horrible. Ae had no problem working with them, they’re still people, but there’s always that underlying this shouldn’t have happened to you.

Did Surana/Amell decide to help Jowan and Lily, or did they tell Irving of their plans? Why? Alet helped Jowan and Lily. Jowan is aer family - if he would be happy and safe outside the Circle, Alet would do anything to get him there, even if ae can’t go with him.

How did Surana/Amell feel about returning to the Circle, and seeing it in chaos? Horrified. It was still aer home. Ae kinda, dissociates through the whole ordeal, especially at the interaction with Cullen.  It takes a long time and a lot of Alistair cuddles afterwards to get back to functional.

NATIA BROSCA: (Note: In my canon for Natia, she isn’t the HoF, though she does join the Wardens, and survives Ostagar. Much of my canon for her is post-Trespasser, when she’s one of Divine Leliana’s agents along with a group of my other oc’s, but here’s her Origins canon! lol)

What was Brosca’s relationship with their family like? (Rica, their mother…) Leske? Natia loves Rica more than anything and anyone. Leske is her best - and probably only - friend. She... doesn’t care about her mom, really. Not like her mom really parented her; Rica was more of a mother than their mom ever was.

How did Brosca feel about working for Beraht? Natia hated it. He was obnoxious and rude and nothing she did was good enough. And he was hurting Rica. Natia would have done anything to get away from him where Rica could be safe.

What did Brosca decide to do with Oskias? Why? No point pissing off Beraht when she didn’t need to. Not her fault Oskias screwed up. She has to take care of herself and her sister.

Did Brosca stop to talk with the surface merchant? If so, how did they react to hearing about life above ground? If not, did they have any ideas about what the surface must be like? The surface sounds like a paradise in comparison to Dust Town. A place where she could do something besides running around beating people up to line someone else’s pockets, where Rica could settle down? Where they could be treated like people? Natia only doesn’t go because all of her money goes to Beraht. She tries saving up, but there really isn’t much she can save that either the carta or her mother doesn’t take right back.

What motivated Brosca to approach Duncan at the proving? What did they think of his kind responses? A Darkspawn killer from the surface who recruits dwarves? Natia wants to know everything about the surface, and the Wardens are the closest to what she knows, something she knows she could do. She could be a Warden - all she’s good at is fighting anyway. Rica could go with her, and stay in a nice home in a city while Natia kills darkspawn and sends money home to her. And, Duncan treated her like a person, no less for being casteless. The Wardens seem perfect.

Did Brosca use the drug on Mainar, or fight in the Proving without cheating? Why? No cheating. She doesn’t want to get caught, and that might cause a scene. She could care less about the cheating itself, but the point is to keep it hidden so no one lashes out at them. Getting caught was not an option.

How did Brosca go about escaping their cell in Beraht’s estate?

What did Brosca plan to do after defeating Beraht, not knowing they would be recruited as a warden? Natia’s main goal was to make sure Rica would be safe, and then that Leske would be alright. If she was arrested, that was fine, but she planned on taking the fall entirely. Not like she had any other plans.

What was Brosca’s reaction to seeing the surface for the first time? A mix of terror and absolute amazement. It was really unsettling not having a ceiling, but there was so much life. People didn’t know who she was or that she was casteless, didn’t know she was worthless. She asked Duncan so many questions on the way to Ostagar. Her only regret was not being able to take Rica with her like she’d wanted.

How did Brosca feel about returning to Orzammar, amid the fight for the crown? It didn’t take her long to pick a side: if Bhelen was good to Rica, treated her right, and Rica loved him, that was enough for Natia. And no one could touch her - she was a Warden, and her sister was an official royal concubine with the future king’s son. No matter how many guards or merchants or nobles sneered at her, they couldn’t do anything to her. Their insults didn’t matter anymore: she was worth something. She was a bit embarrassed at her new friends seeing what her life had been like before and that in Orzammar, she was less than garbage. Having them there definitely helped her deflect all of the insults and hatred though. These people knew better, loved her, followed her because she meant something to them, she was good at what she did, she was someone. And the rest of Orzammar didn’t matter anymore.

DARIA AEDUCAN:

How did Aeducan get along with their siblings? Their father? Gorim? Daria loved her brothers. She wasn’t as close to Trian, but she adored Bhelen. They were both so, so supportive in their own ways when she came out and told them she was a woman, and kept supporting her. She would do anything for them. She isn’t as close to their father, even if she’s the “favorite”.  She loves Gorim. He’s her best friend, her partner, her lover, and she really doesn’t care what anyone thinks about how close they are.

How adapt was Aeducan at the politics they grew up in? Did this affect their relationship with their father? She’s very good at it. She knows how to make people like her; she had to, to survive coming out. If it means lying, that’s fine. She tries not to really hurt people, because that wouldn’t reflect well on her, but at the end of the day, she does what she needs to do.

Did Aeducan partake in the Proving? If so, how did it go? If not, what did they think about being a spectator? Spectator. She didn’t really care about it that much. She mostly went because it was technically in her honor and she couldn’t miss it. It would look bad if she did.

Did Aeducan choose to support Lord Dace’s bid to lift the trading restrictions on surface dwarves, or turn against him? Why? Support. No sense not making friends and gathering favors. Besides, more trade meant more money in the economy, and who didn’t like that?

What did Aeducan think upon hearing Bhelen tell them Trian is planning their death? Daria didn’t believe him. Surely Bhelen was misinterpreting something. Trian was a jerk, but he wouldn’t kill her, right?

What was going through Aeducan’s mind while exploring Aeducan Thaig? She knew the others were mocking her for her belief in her brothers. Trian wouldn’t kill her, Bhelen wouldn’t trick her like that. Ridiculous. They’re her brothers - who cares what a couple of soldiers think?

Did Aeducan murder Trian, or did they find him dead? How did Aeducan react to Bhelen’s accusations? She finds him dead. She’s devastated that Bhelen did that to her. She would have had no problem stepping aside for Bhelen if he’d asked for her help. She would have used her influence and favors she’d gathered for his cause - she didn’t want to be queen. And she believed in Bhelen, thought he would be a great leader, and she wished he had trusted her.

How did their little unarmoured jaunt in the Deep Roads towards certain death go? Daria was more than capable of defending herself, even unarmored and barely armed. And, stumbling upon the Wardens covered in Darkspawn blood in a simple dress certainly makes a good impression.

What was Aeducan’s reaction to seeing the surface for the first time? At first, she hates it. She’s dizzy, it’s too open, and why is there so much noise? After she adjusts, she’s really just sad to leave him. Orzammar was all she’d known, and she had a life there.

How did Aeducan feel about returning to Orzammar, amid the fight for the crown? She goes right to Bhelen to help him. He’s surprised, and that makes her sad - what had she done to make her little brother think she wouldn’t support him? She’s good at ignoring all the insults and hatred from people who still think she killed Trian. She’d been dealing with idiots like that even before the incident, and their words stopped hurting her years ago. She just wants to help her brother.

ELISSA COUSLAND:

What was Cousland’s relationship like with their family? Gilmore? Elissa loves loves loves her family. Daddy’s little girl, spitting image of her mother, she adores her big brother, and she is Super Aunt to Oren. She’s close friends with Oriana.  Rory is her best friend, her first love when they were young teenagers. It didn’t last, but not because of any negative feelings or animosity. She still cares for him deeply, but they just weren’t compatible as partners like that.

How adapt was Cousland at the politics they grew up in? Did this affect their relationship with their parents? Not... great. Good for Ferelden, because she’s very forward and not afraid to say what she means, but the subtleties of politics are completely lost on her. Why bother lying when she can be upfront with someone? It was a bit difficult when she didn’t like any of the matches her parents suggested, but eventually they accepted that was just how she was. She would make her own way, even if it wasn’t in politics.

How did Cousland feel about being left in charge of the castle, while their father and Fergus went off to battle? So nervous. Elissa did not like being in charge of things - she had no experience with it! What if she messed up? Said the wrong thing? What if no one listened to her? She certainly didn’t want to go to battle, she was a skilled fighter but had never been to war either, but being left behind wasn’t much better, in her mind.

How did Cousland treat the castle’s staff? What did the staff think of them in return? She’s nice to everyone. Most of them have known her since she was little, and have always accommodated her being on the spectrum, and she won’t repay that kindness with spite. She’s a bit clueless at times, but she tries. She’s pretty well liked in return, but then, her whole family is.

How did Cousland react to hearing Duncan say they would be a promising recruit for the Grey Wardens? Nope. Nope nope nope. No. She can fight but she won’t if she doesn’t have to. She learned combat to be able to protect her home. Nope.

What did Cousland think about Howe suggesting they marry one of his children? No. She was friends with Nathaniel when they were kids, so maybe that wouldn’t be so bad, but not his brother. Thomas is nice, but he’s still a teenager, and Elissa was an adult. It would have felt weird, especially considering her friendship with Nathaniel. It wasn’t that she had anything against the family, but... no.

How well-versed is Cousland in their family’s history? Did they stop to talk with Aldous about it? Elissa LOVES HISTORY. She has her family’s history memorized and knows it in depth by heart. It’s just so interesting and it’s her family, where she came from, and it’s history, and she loves history.

How did Cousland handle seeing the death of those around them? Of the destruction of the castle? Badly. It was her home, her family, everyone she’d ever known. She’d barely ever left Highever. Seeing Howe having everyone killed, even children, broke her. There was Nan, who had helped raised her and treated her like her own child. Mother Mallol, who had taught her the Chant, Aldous, her teacher as long as she could remember, Rory... Elissa was mostly just going through the motions for a while after. She couldn’t comprehend the losses.

Did Cousland willingly join Duncan, or resist fleeing? Why? Resist. She couldn’t leave her parents. Duncan had to practically drag her out, and she fought him as much as she could. She felt like she abandoned them, like she’d lost everything.

How did Cousland feel about/react to seeing Howe again? About eventually killing him? She was so angry. Everything he did, and he didn’t even have a reason for it. He just wanted power. All of the senseless death and suffering, her own, everyone in Highever, everyone in Ferelden he had hurt to get what he wanted.  And yet, she still offered him mercy. She wouldn’t be the monster he was. She wouldn’t retaliate against his family, and she wouldn’t kill him. Until he spits out the description of what he did to her family, how he’d “disposed” of them, insulting them and practically spitting on their graves. She ran him through almost instantly. She felt empty after. Alistair and Zevran had to drag her away from the room. She was just so tired, of all of the death and suffering, and getting her revenge hadn’t helped. She’d avenged her family, but she felt nothing. The trauma never really went away.

Some facts, tidbits, and rambling character building under the cut!

► Mahariel insist everyone calls her Mahariel. Zevran begins using her first name when they start sleeping together, and everyone else (except Surana and Cousland) follows suit. She hates it, but has stopped correcting them. ► In a similar vein, everyone except Mahariel shortens Sethan to ‘Seth’. He has no strong feelings one way or the other. ► Having Jowan and Seth as best friends made Mai’s life in the circle very stressful, but not as stressful as both of them turning out to be blood mages and trying to run away. Mahariel’s praise and encouragement of Seth’s practice does nothing to help Amell’s stress or friendship levels. ► Vaela Aeducan wants to be friends with everyone. She really does. They are just all so disorderly, and none of them ever follow her orders, so she comes off harshly. ► Lyna, Vaela, and Heather are at any given moment either three best friends no man or beast dares stand against, or the combatants in a three-sided cold war the entire camp feels the effects of. ► Heather Cousland never became a warden. She escaped the castle with the knight Ser Roland Gilmore, and the two met up with the wardens in Lothering. Her knowledge of politics and basic human etiquette proved invaluable for the crew. ► Despite his poor upbringing, in every sense of the term, Brock Brosca is a gentle dwarf who strives to be a pacifist diplomat. What with the gangs and the Blight, he has no choice but to get dangerous, though he’d much rather make a nice stew than bash skulls. ► If Kallian Tabris had the physical strength to crush skulls, she would never stop. Instead, she just stabs and poisons. (Though not always on purpose. Never let the girl near a kitchen)

【Heather joined the team initially only to find her brother and get revenge on Howe, but when Alistair’s parentage was revealed she added “Become Queen” to her checklist. 【 She doesn’t care much for Alistair himself, however. She doesn’t dislike him, but her feelings are better described as ‘apathetic’, and the same can be said for her view on Kallian (though the elf is a bit more fun to cause mischief with). 【 When she announces to the Landsmeet that she and Alistair will marry and rule together, she later reassures him the marriage is, in fact, a farce and all she wants from him is his name and crown. And an heir or two. 【 To the children they eventually have, Kallian is referred to as a third parent, albeit one who is not allowed to give permission for most things and is automatically overruled by any veto from either Heather or Alistair.

➷ Sethan, Kallian, and Maihara are 14, 16, and 17 years old respectively. No one was happy when they found out. ➷ Mahariel was particularly worked up about the wardens taking elven children from their homes and forcing them into military service for the rest of their lives, but not as upset as she was when she found out it was better than the alternatives they were given. ➷ The three elves got on immediately, Sethan in particular latched onto Mahariel- with a desire to learn as much of the dalish and the Old Ways as possible, which she gladly indulged. Kallian sat in for some language lessons, and almost all of the old stories Lyna could remember, but she is distracted significantly more easily than the mage. ✽ In addition to someone who knew what elves had been and, in his opinion, what they still should be, Sethan found in Mahariel the inspiration he never had in the circle tower. The older mages and the enchanters supported and taught him, of course, but only on the things they wanted him to learn. Mahariel encouraged him towards all magic. His magic, the type he learned with Jowan, sneaking about the library after curfew, Jowan muttering nervously the whole time about how they were as good as dead if they were caught. Mahariel saw the power blood magic granted him, reveled in it, and taught him how nothing can hurt you if you don’t let it. ⫸ Kallian received that lesson as well, but then fell out of a tree and nearly broke her arm, and she quickly (and loudly) denounced the philosophy.

♪ Maihara was unaware of Seth and Jowan’s descent into maleficarum, but did her best to snap them out of it once it was revealed. Mahariel egging Seth on undid any progress she made, and it permanently soured her towards the older elf. ♪ After Mahariel became commander, Maihara was only kept from deserting because of the lingering darkspawn threat. The decision that the wardens would ally with the architect was the final straw for her, and she left Amaranthine at her first opportunity- tagging along with Anders to the Free Marches. ♪ The “mai” in Maihara is pronounced like “May” and provides a convenient one-syllable nickname that she doesn’t hate.

Lyna Lavellan was so small she made Surana feel like a giraffe. They were both thin, willowy elvhen women, but Lyna was short and narrow in the face. She spoke softly, too, sounding deceptively gentle, a contrast to Surana’s deeper, more commanding tone. Her presence was subtle but powerful, her shock of blonde hair drawing eyes even when she did not mean to. Like her bow, the beauty in her features and behavior belied her potential.

Ellana is not like the rest of her family. Mahaon had repeatedly assured Bull prior to her arrival that Ellana was just the same as the rest of them. She would be able to keep up. She was one of them and that Bull wouldn’t need to worry about going easy on her, on having to make adjustments to the way he runs things for her.

Bull isn’t so sure of that now.

The Ellana Lavellan that he’s been told about from the occupants of this house who knew her.

This is not an Ellana Lavellan who runs and catches foxes and hares with her teeth. This is not an Ellana Lavellan who dances on the rooftop when the moon is full. This is not an Ellana Lavellan who sword fights up and down the hallways while singing made up lines of poetry.

Bull observes the present Ellana Lavellan as her…fiancé, Aedan, pulls out her chair for her and gently pushes it back in as she seats herself. They are both smiling. Bull wonders if either of them ever stop smiling.

He wonders what they’re smiling about, if anything.

As the family descends upon their meal — hands tearing, teeth slicing — the gentle clink of forks and knives can only be heard from two seated at that table.

Ellana and Aedan, ever so perfect and dainty, eat tiny little mechanical bites. Like dolls. That’s what they remind Bull of. They remind Bull of dolls. Terrible life sized dolls being puppet-ed by something else that he can’t see.

Bull has spent all afternoon attempting to get one or the other to talk, but they’re always together. Always. And his power works best on one person at a time. He’d asked Dalish to see if she could figure out something; like if it was Aedan making Ellana behave that way, or if whatever it was between them could be broken if they were separated. But Dalish may take some time to divine her answers.

He slips out of the dining hall and quietly makes his way to the study. Even through the closed doors he can hear the raised voices inside. He knocks but doesn’t wait for permission to enter.

Sylaise’ face is ruddy with irritation, with distress, and her hands and arms are smeared with ash all the way up to the elbow. Elgar’nan must have left already.

Solas is hurriedly writing, ink staining his hands and smudged on his face. “The Iron Bull.”

“What the fuck is going on with those two?” Bull asks as soon as the door is closed. “Did you notice? As soon as they entered the house. Nothing from the wards. They don’t register. I checked. I had Skinner and Rocky running in and out of the house through every door and window in the place to check if they were still working and they are. I’ve had them throwing objects, magical and not, in and out of the house. The wards work. They aren’t registering those two as people.”

“They’re flat,” Sylaise replies, “There’s something dampening them, making them — whatever the hell it is they are. Did you notice it when you look at them? Their eyes are empty. There’s nothing in there, as though something went inside their heads and scooped everything out.”

“But you could feel it,” Solas interjects, “For a moment you felt it. When Ellana crossed the property line. Something in the land knew her, if only for a moment.”

“A trick,” Sylaise refutes, “A trick by the Archon to get inside and nothing more. Don’t be sentimental. We need to get these things out of here before they ruin us all.”

“Did you hear back from the other houses?”

“Much the same as what we have here, sans an Aedan,” Sylaise replies. “Lyna Mahariel is much like Ellana is now, except she keeps wandering away and forgetting where she is. Darrian Tabris seems to be prone to bouts of narcolepsy and forgets whatever conversation he’s having while he’s having it. Alim Surana doesn’t speak at all and only nods or shakes his head. I reached out to non-elven houses who had their children coming back. Maxwell Trevelyan has his head in the clouds and doesn’t speak unless spoken to first. Kaaras Adaar keeps bleeding from the nose and ears, though he doesn’t know it. Natia Brosca can’t recognize anyone by face or name. Ironically Ellana seems to be the one who’s better off right now.”

She turns to Solas. “I know you hate to say it, but admit it. Andruil was right. When the Archon knocked on our door we should have answered by spitting in his face. Look at us now. He’s taken all of the children of the land from noble families and turned them into broken puppets. Monsters to destroy us from the inside out. And we allowed it. Better that we had gone to war and possibly lost than this.”

“We don’t have time to argue about stuff that happened years ago,” the Iron Bull says, “I need to get these two out of this house now. Can you tell me anything for dealing with this?”

Before either can answer the three of them feel a shiver of the wards around the dining room. Bull is out of the study and racing towards the dining room.

As he enters he doesn’t know what he expects to see, and yet he’s still somehow surprised.

Ellana and Aedan are laughing. They’re sitting, hands folded in their laps and laughing.

Ellana’s mother is in tears and Mahanon is on his feet — the wards are reacting to his anger. Lord Lavellan’s hands are fists and Bull can see the restrained fury in his eyes as he struggles to maintain control.

“Answer me,” Mahanon snarls around sharp teeth, “Answer me. Say something. Say anything that isn’t ‘splendid’ or ‘lovely’. Tell me what we wrote to you about in our letters. Tell me something real. Don’t look at Aedan. Look at me. Look at me. Look me in the eyes and tell me something real.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ellana laughs. “You’re being ridiculous, Mahanon. Stop with your jokes. Mama, stop him.”

Bull rounds the table so he can get Ellana and Aedan in the center of his view.

“What’s going on?” He asks.

Ellana’s eyes slide to him. It feels like oil. It feels like tar. It feels dangerous as they slide closed with her laughter.

Aedan and Ellana’s laughter seems to rise in volume, the pleasant syllables of their exhales chiming their way up towards the ceiling.

“Nothing’s the matter. Everything’s perfectly lovely,” Aedan says, teeth dangerous and on display as he smiles. “What could possibly be wrong?”

“You. You’re wrong. She never once wrote about you and suddenly you’re to be engaged?”

“We already are.”

“You won’t even tell us your family name.”

“What does it matter? You can all me Aedan.”

Mahanon snarls low in his throat and shoves away from the table, chair clattering to the ground as he storms out of the room, chased by the sounds of foreign giggles.

Ooooh I like these lmao, I'll probably focus more on my Inquisitors than my others because I've had them for longer and have developed them more.

Warning: This is going to be...really long. Trust me.

1) "Do you have any non-Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor characters?"

No I don't think I do! Though it is an interesting concept I'm willing to play around with!

2) "What is the most you've ignored the game's canon backstory for a character?"

My Marian Hawke and Mihra Lavellan, definitely. They're about even I'd say. They're both ex-tranquils, their reasons for breaking out of their tranquility are very different though, I can go into further detail on another post/ask if you'd like??

3) "Tell me about a friendship one of your OCs has with a non-companion/advisor/family character?"

I don't think I have built any strong non-canon relationships, although Boithea and Varadis (two of my Lavellans) were twins who exist in separate universes?? (I know you said non family but hhhhah-). I like to pretend some of my characters are good friends with Harding or Maryden, or just a random OC in one of the areas every now and then. I also like to think that certain NPCs in Origins and 2 like certain characters but that's a lot of detail to go into I reckon?

4) "Have any of them ever punched someone out of combat, and if so, who?"

All non-canon (well, canon to me but didn't actually happen in the game due to...restraints...)

Inquisition: Boithea's punched Cullen at least once! (She had her reasons!) She also tries to punch Solas once or twice depending on canon (I've mentioned in a previous post that she has two canons that split off from eachother). Lokhultaar jokingly punched Bull jokingly but accidentally put a bit too much force behind it and left a bruise. Thora punched Blackwall after finding out his big old secret (then promptly apologized and forgave him). Varadis "I Love My Mother And My Culture" Lavellan has probably tried to hit Solas or thought very hard about hitting Sera.

2: Seran Hawke is a hothead and has most definitely punched a couple people or two who have pissed her off. Marian Hawke would NEVER (although, some part of her probably wants to occasionally). Yrin Hawke has probably gotten drunk and had a fist fight or two, or has probably gone all "fight me outside one v one fists only I'll break your frikkin teeth" if someone insults Isabela in front of her.

Origins: Neria Surana is more of a jokester who will try to diffuse the situation. Lyna Mahariel can and will fight you and she can and will win BUT she won't like, actively pursue the possibility of a fight. Newyn Tabris, however, is completely feral and will absolutely throw down at any given chance so she's probably definitely punched a face or two. Or three. Or more.

5) "What's an in-game decision only one of your OCs made?"

Aw hell I'm not sure, uh...Lokhultaar picked Templars because I wanted to see what it was like to side with them once, and also because it sorta suited her character I guess.

As for 2, I reckon the OC I'll have who doesn't instantly accept everything and try to help everyone to the best of her ability would have been Seran, which resulted in...a very lonely end game.

And Origins, I haven't played enough characters far enough through to answer this lol

6) "Do any of them have kids?"

Inquisition: hmmm...I don't think I have any straight couples other than Boithea/Solas...so no, I wouldn't say so.

2 - I like to think that Marian potentially has a child later on in life, after the events of everything. I'm thinking if it's a girl she'd name her Bethany or Leandra, and if it's a boy she'd name him Carver.

Origins - again, I haven't played much but...I'd like to think that maybe things settle down after the end with Lyna and Zevran and they maybe consider it. Neria wouldn't have a child with Alistair because she knows, that, well...y'know. And wouldn't want to subject a child to that. She knows what it's like to lose your parents at such a young age. And Newyn Tabris is gay.

7) " What about pets?"

All my Wardens and Hawke's have their Mabari's! They're all very devastated when they die from old age.

Darius Trevelyan had a cat and a horse at one point as a child, but I don't know if that counts.

8) "Who hates the Chantry most?"

Listen, we're all over here throwing steaming hot shit on it. I think Darius and Seran are the only ones who don't hate it. I'd say Boithea and Varadis hate it the most but secretly? Marian and Mihra harbour so much resentment towards it it's scary. Not that they'd show it.

Imma Talk about my Garbage Kids

I’m just gonna start chatting bout my Dragon age ocs first… then might move to different fandoms/groups depending on my mood… this is probably all gonna be text so feel free to just move past it without a second thought these are just my garbage children, and yes I realize most of them are women, I don’t have a problem playing as male characters I’m just gay and I tend to fall for the girls I build and get distracted.

Dragon Age Origins

Roslynn Cousland- Shes this strong smart steadfast woman, a warrior, she romanced and married Alistair, and they rule fereldan together, she leads the warden team situation

Elizabeth Amell- Shes motherly and persistent, once she sets her mind to something it must be completed, she's a mage, became a warden to get out of the tower and see the world and to help, she fell for Leliana, and she fell hard.

Rayne Amell- shes a lot like purple Hawke in terms of her personality, she is an apostate, and joined up with the Troops at ostigar as a warrior and offered herself to the wardens to help the war effort she joined up with Roslynn and the others at lothering after escaping the battle and managed miraculously to capture Morrigians heart.

Alim Surana- outgoing and charming he’s Maria’s elder brother, he joins the wardens with Elizabeth, sires Kieran for the ritual and spends however long he has left traveling the land killing dark pawn, bitter about what happened to his sister.

Shaewyn Ashanyla- stubborn, Melancholic, persuasive. She is formerly of the clan Ghilain and joined the wardens after contracting the blight through accidentally swallowing Darkspawn blood, she was a big help to the team and after the blight ended she was around Perelman helping people recover for about 3 years before she was sent on the road where she met her apostate wife.

Nyani Mahariel- Stubborn, free-willed and adventurous she was a great warrior for her clan till of course she contracted the blight and became a warden, she loved Tamlen more than she loved anything and never really got over him (and for Au purposes they became wardens together but in terms of canon game…)

Tatiana Tabris- Shes a stubborn strong-willed thief from denerim, she fell for Zevran and never ended up becoming a blight carrying warden but she was a great help to the team

Maria Surana- a shy, nervous, anxiety-ridden friend to Amell and Jowen. Though she was supposed to face her harrowing it didn't come before the whole thing that happened at the tower and in her fear of becoming tranquil she escaped in all the fuss and turned to blood magic on the road defending herself from wolves, she was eventually hunted down and made tranquil. Elizabeth took her in as an assistant when she found out about what happened

Kya Aeducan- a stubborn, but Charming dwarven princess who would stop at nothing to avenge her elder brother and claim what was rightfully hers, she's a warrior, and she ended up kindling feelings for Natia Brosca while she traveled with the Wardens.

Natia Brosca- slippery sweet-talking duster, she was conscripted into the wardens but never officially joined… slippery and all that, she stuck around at Kya’s promise to get her back to Orzimmar, back to her family, eventually she caught feels for the future Queen of Orzimmar (personal au and all that)

Dragon Age 2

Marian Hawke- purple verging red for personality, she was the warrior champion and is the oldest of the four of the siblings she supports her teammates and cares for all of them… maybe not Sebastian… he just rubs her the wrong way… she and Anders got together and she would do anything for him

Garrett Hawke- purple-blue Marians younger brother, friendly with everyone including Sebastian, he's a mage and he managed to capture Fenris’ heart

Lana Pentaghast- shes devout and kind, she related to Cassandra obviously and she got with Sebastian, she was in Kirkwall for reasons I haven't decided yet and joined the champions merry gang of misfits because well over anything else they *were* helping people even if the methods were unorthodox

Dragon Age Inquisition

Lydia Trevelyan- Sweet, clever, stubborn, Lady mage inquisitor and herald to Andraste, she brought the world to its knees with charm and wit and built an army to kill a god, and she romanced Cullen.

Jacob Trevelyan- he's charming and funny and genuinely based off Alistair for personality, he's formerly a templar, and is a warrior, Lydia’s older brother he helped in her endeavor to heal the world and found love in Cassandra

Leros Lavellan- witty, persuasive, charming, he's the oldest of his right knit siblings and the first to his clan he found himself charmed by Dorian and at Lydia’s side as a close friend.

Elissa Lavellan- strongwilled and caring with a bit of a temper she's a middle child with a sword and shield and is close with both of her siblings, she found affection in Solas and would listen as he spun tales of the old days to her and she was absolutely heartbroken when he left.

Lyna Lavellan- outgoing adventurous bad for her brothers health she is the youngest of the three lavellan kids and is quite skilled with a bow, she tends to be the glue that holds her siblings together because though Elissa is the second she has the protective nature of a first child which she shares with Leros and their stubborn natures tend to but heads, she fell into Seras arms romantically at the end of it all.

Persephone Adaar- oldest of the Adaar siblings and a mage she takes care of her siblings more as a mother than a sister seeing as they were raised with mercenaries. She fell for Iron bull in the end and travels with the chargers.

Freyja Adaar- she and her twin Tyr have considered 2nd cause none of them are really sure who was first. But Freyja’s fast hands and quick tongue land her in more than enough trouble with Perse and pretty much everyone else she ans Josie are happy together.

Tyr Adaar- hes tired and protective of his siblings, he would’ve made a fine agent of the qun had his parents not defected.

Eir Adaar- youngest of the bunch and the only one that is only half qunari her father having been an elf, she tends to be shorter than the rest of her siblings and has a… particular outlook on life not shared by many.

Opal Cadash- shes a sweet-talking fast-fingered surface dwarf with strong Carta presence shes the oldest child, she fell for Blackwall

Amber Cadash- Opals younger take no shit warrior sister.
