Disclaimer: Cubans are not a monolith so when we say ‘Cuban Folk Magic’ its like saying ‘American Folk Magic’ in the sense that it is a BROAD term that includes multiple different cultural threads and traditions. Start by researching your ancestors and where they were from as a jumping off point.

Also, many of these resources are not Cuban themselves, but they either share the same practices or are academic or general sources. I have made it clear when a source isn’t Cuban. For this reason, I have expanded it to be the Cuban AND Caribbean Folk Magic List.

Guide to researching based on your ancestry:

If your family has African roots, you can seek Ocha/Lukumi, Palo, Arara, Cuban Vodou and other African Traditional Religions and Practices. Please approach elders within these respective practices to further your connection to them, rather than using books to create a practice for yourself. These are ancient, community based and are lifelong commitments, not just trendy powerful spells for you to get what you want.

If your family has indigenous roots, research Taino spirituality and modern practices , but also know that there were other tribes in the western and centeral parts of Cuba, with their own languages and traditions you can still learn about like the Guanahatabey. You may also consider joining a Yukayeke, but this isn’t required. Reconnecting and decolonizing is a separate and important topic that is not inherently witchcraft or folk magick-y… HOWEVER, researching and informing yourself with these practices can help you to see their influence within modern folk practices.

If your family has Asian roots, research the buddhist cults and folk practices throughout Cuba! Believe it or not, we also have people of Middle Eastern descent in Cuba who brought with them their own Hindu and Arabic Folk Traditions, which can be found throughout Cuba and the Caribbean as a whole.

If your family has Spanish roots, research some open practices like Espiritismo and Folk Catholicism! Look into the Patron Saints of Cuba, La Virgen de La Caridad del Cobre and San Lazaro. These also tie in to many of the other cultures who were forced to adopt certain elements to ensure survival of their traditions! You can also look into Brujería. Much like modern witchcraft, modern brujería has been commodified to hell and back, but there is still some great knowledge and power to be found there.

The fact of the matter is, that most of us can fit ourselves into two or more of these categories, and this crossover is where Folk Magic is often born. Its also important to note, in alot of these traditions you shouldn’t learn or share certain things at certain times, so some sources who share too much about Ocha and other ATRs should be avoided. Also, I can’t stress how important it is to talk to your family! Ask them about folklore or legends and stories! Also research history and folkore of the specific areas in Cuba your family is from. A-lot of folk magic is incorporated into stories.

Summary: Astrid gets outed to her mom so Lydia decides to see Astrid with Delia.

Currently, Astrid was skipping class but it was for good reason. Well, good reason for herself at least. She was currently going to meet her secret girlfriend. No one knew that she was bisexual except her girlfriend and she wanted to keep it that way, especially with how homophobic the girls could be in her wing. She was already bullied enough for her mom presenting Ghost House so she didn’t need to egg them on anymore. That would be bad.

Her girlfriend was currently waiting in the janitor's closet and as Astrid walked in, she was yanked by her collar and kissed. She kissed the girl back, shocked at how eager she was but didn’t care. They just kept kissing, Stacy (her girlfriend’s name) tugging off her tie and unbuttoning her top 2 buttons. Soon, both pulled away, saliva still connecting them together. “You don’t realise how hot you look like that, especially with your shirt untucked,” Stacy spoke, trailing a finger down her shoulder.

“I try and look my best for you baby,” Astrid spoke, kissing her again as she pinned Stacy against the wall. 

They were so distracted by kissing that they didn’t realise when the door opened until a cough happened. Stacy quickly looked over Astrid’s shoulder, getting a bright red shade on her face. Astrid paled, however. Her girlfriend was out to her parents but Astrid wasn’t out to anyone. Yes, she was close with Delia but she wasn’t with her mother, and she didn’t know how both would react. Her breathing was panicky but she put on her facade immediately. “Principal's office, now,” the janitor demanded, watching them leave. She was watching as they walked to the principal's office too, walking in after them.

“I caught these 2 making out in the janitor's closet,” the janitor explained, dropping Astrid’s tie on the desk before she left. Meanwhile, Principal Torres sighed and looked at them. 

“Sit down,” she spoke. Astrid and Stacy did as told, not wanting to get more in trouble. The principal sighed. “Why did you think it was a good idea to make out during class time?” she asked them, glaring.

“So we won’t be seen and potentially bullied,” Astrid spoke with a sassy tone. 

“And so you’d risk detention for it?” Torres asked again, raising an eyebrow. Astrid nodded.

“You’ve seen how people act to people like us,” Stacy immediately fought back and Astrid looked at her with awe and love. 

“We don’t have much time alone. Fuck you, we’re going now,” Astrid spoke and got up, Stacy joining her too and both left to Astrid’s room. 

After a few hours, Astrid was alone as she was wearing a pair of sweatpants and one of her dad’s old shirts. She was doing some schoolwork as she was struggling admittedly. She wasn’t the best at school but she was ok at it. She got C’s and B’s as well as a D in math but she was getting through. She was soon interrupted by a knock on the door, and she groaned. “Go away,” she called out annoyed, not caring who it was. She knew it wasn’t Stacy though, she had her own distinct knock. 

“Honey, it’s me. Delia is here too,” Lydia spoke through the door. Astrid froze. 

‘Of course, the school would tell Mom that I’m bisexual’ Astrid grumbled in her thoughts. “Same answer,” Astrid spoke annoyed. Of course, her mom would visit when she was in a bad mood. She was on a break though, waiting for the new series release then her mom would be away in different states, ‘talking’ to ghosts. 

“It’s only karma,” she heard Delia say through the door. She couldn’t help but smile. 

“Shut up, can you try and get us in?” she asked.

“I can hear you, you know?” Astrid asked, sighing as she stood up and opened the door. Her mother was persistent but a pushover for Rory. 

She was surprised when she opened the door and saw a bag in her mother’s hand. “What’s that?” she asked curiously as well as scared. She thought the worst immediately, thinking it was conversion therapy leaflets. 

“These were originally meant for your upcoming birthday but we decided to give them over now to help cheer you up,” Delia answered for Lydia as she put the bag on the bed. Astrid immediately looked in and was surprised to see all the books for The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. She was happy too of course but then she saw the card. It read on the front We support you and on the inside it also read I know you didn’t come out in your own way but we will support you no matter what. You are my child and I will support you. In another handwriting, it also said You are my grandchild and you remind me of little Lydia in a way. I hope that your girlfriend is good to you. Love from mom and grandma. Astrid turned around, and in a rare moment, she hugged her mom and grandma. She had tears sun her eyes. 

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, I was scared,” Astrid spoke, her voice cracking. 

“It’s ok sweetheart, I wish we weren’t told but here we are,” Lydia spoke, rocking Astrid. 

Maybe it wasn’t so bad that they knew now. “You are in trouble for skipping classes though,” Delia spoke. Astrid groaned but she was happy with her family for once. Maybe she should give her mom more of a chance…
