[ we can’t be friends / but i’d like to just pretend ]
Tumblr media
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.
Tumblr media
sometimes you feel like the loneliest girl in the world.
you sit down on the damp grass and start to play around with the green strands as a means of distracting yourself.
as the only girl in your current group, the boys would barely want to co-exist with you. let alone spend precious play time entertaining someone like you.
this meant that a lot of the time, you were alone. when you told your father at nine years old, that you wanted to be a formula one driver one day, he patted your head and smiled benignly at you.
“you can do whatever you’d like kiddo. just be prepared for the weight that comes with it.”
the weight would never feel as heavy as it did when you were excluded from the group.
you’d already exhausted all your entertainment options. you looked across the field to see all the boys playing with each other, roughhousing and kicking a football about. you had finished your book, you hadn’t been allowed an ipod until you were at least sixteen as your mother had warned and now you were bored.
until someone came and sat next to you.
you look up to see a boy that you knew vaguely. the one that had just beat you to narrowly win the go karting race. he looks at you and smiles, sheepishly.
“is it okay if i sit here?”
you nod. you didn’t have the luxury to turn away company. his arm was bruised, as you look at the motley of blue and purple on his fair skin. he sees you looking and hides it, laughing awkwardly.
“it’s nothing. the guys are just rough. that’s why i’m here.”
“i’m y/n.”
“i know.” he says. when you look at him blankly. he stammers again. “i know, i know because we race together a lot. i’m max. i’m not a stalker. i don’t think so anyways.”
“i didn’t believe you were. i just didn’t think you’d know who i was.”
“you’re really good. i always have to keep a look out for the competition.”
“thanks.” it was something about his matter of fact statement that made the warmth spread through your body. if the best thought you were good, that had to mean something right? maybe the sacrifices were worth it.
“no problem.”
you didn’t say anything else after that, but you knew you’d found a kindred spirit within him. the loneliness didn’t seem so lonely when he was there.
SEVEN YEARS AGO.
Tumblr media
“hey maneater.” a tall guy with dark hair leaned over and grinned boyishly at you. “saw that race, you were good.”
“i try.” you smile, chagrined. you hated parties. you hated clubs. you hated anything that put you in the path of men like this. the ones that were oily and greasy and would slip out of your grasp whenever you wanted them.
ever since you had started racing actual cars, and beating records that had been in place for years. the media had given you a nickname, ‘maneater’. max had laughed when he saw the news spread and when you jokingly tried to bite him, you both ignored the shiver that went through his body.
he had already started your dream. he had been a rookie driver for about a year when you still were working your way up. a small part of you resented him. was he simply the better driver or was he deemed so by everyone else?
max comes up to you, face flushed with laughter and alcohol as he he wraps an arm around your waist and buries his face in your neck.
“y/n. i’m tired.”
thankful for the distraction, you mouth a pretend apology to the random man and move your position to a more comfortable one. max always smelt the same, you couldn’t pinpoint the smell but it was always something so undeniably max that it took everything not to intertwine you both together.
“i did tell you to cool it with the drinks.”
“but i won. i deserve to celebrate.”
“sure you do.” you hum, stroking a hand through his slightly sweaty hair. “tomorrow you won’t think this is much of a celebration though.”
he turns up to look at you. eyes wide as he looks at you, as if he’s seeing you for the first time. you smile down at him.
“it’s always a celebration when you’re here.”
“is that so?”
he nods. settling his head down on your exposed thigh as your dress had slightly rode up.
“if you win more races, that’ll just give us an excuse to celebrate more huh?”
FOUR YEARS AGO.
Tumblr media
you had finally made it. you were going to be a formula one driver. you had done every stage of celebratory measures. you cried in happiness for your baby self. you called all your family members up, you called your friends and you called max. max insisted on sending a massive bouquet of flowers and a cake around. even though now technically you’d be rivals, he said it wouldn’t change anything.
you swore it wouldn’t either.
SIX MONTHS AGO.
Tumblr media
it had been at the abu dhabi grand prix when the incident happened. it started as how every race did. you arrived, you prepped for the race, you interacted with fans and followed whatever inane social media trend your team made you do. you did your pre-race rituals, and listened to your playlist.
the race shouldn’t have been too difficult. you were feeling confident. when you signed a little girl’s poster for you, it made you more excited to go out on the track and make history again.
when max gets competitive, he gets nasty. you knew that. you had always known that. so when you’re leading the race and a car comes hurtling towards you and causing a collision that sent your car spinning off the track, you had a sickly feeling in the pit of your stomach that it was him.
so after you woke up in hospital, as your parents spoke to the doctors. you went through your social media, seeing the crash splashed everywhere. it was trending on three social media sites. the photos of your unconscious body being wrangled from the car by paramedics had been posted by many big figures with prayers. for you.
(“ladies and gentlemen, this is a dark day for motorsport. our hearts go out to y/n and her family.”)
your father came in, his mouth set in a firm line. he looked at you and his eyes were sad.
“hey kiddo. you’re awake. i’m glad.” he smoothed some hair away from your face. you knew he was hiding something from you but you weren’t sure if you should press.“the doctor said you’re going to have to sit out this season. possibly the next too. the crash left you with too many internal injuries. you’re going to need more time to recover.”
you couldn’t move. you couldn’t breathe. you could only listen to the static of the small television in your room. the sound of your heartbeat and the sound of your dreams cracking in half.
“no.”
“no? honey, you can’t. the doctor won’t be able to sign you off.” your mother places a warm hand on yours. “i’m sorry but we need to focus on getting you better. you’re lucky you didn’t die.”
“if i can’t race, i might as well be dead.” you want to scream. to cry. to punch something. to punch someone. “no. you can’t stop me. i’ll drag myself in the seat if i have to.”
“your team has already signed you off honey.” your mother looks upset at your face. “they said to focus on getting stronger again. you’ll bounce back.”
“NO!” you screamed. “i’ve worked my whole life for this shit and he took it away from me? no. no! no, no, no, no.”
you start to sob. your whole body curls in on itself as tears flow uncontrollably down your cheeks. your parents attempt to console you but what use is it? you’ve lost your first love.
you don’t even notice max standing behind the door.
SIX YEARS AGO.
Tumblr media
you find yourself in the awkward position of being max’s date at some charity gala. you find this demeaning but max says it’s a chance to get your name and face out there. interact with the higher ups or something along those lines. he very clearly didn’t acknowledge your introverted tendencies when he said that.
the dress that you bought, hangs loosely around your legs. it’s cinched in at your middle to give the illusion of an hourglass figure. your body has been hardened by all the workouts and you desperately needed a night to dress up. yet, when you get the wrong sort of attention, you start to regret it.
(“you haven’t gotten a boyfriend yet honey. are you not into guys?” your mother had asked one night, as she helped you peel vegetables. your mother had never been a tactful person, but still, you spit out the carrot piece that you had been chewing on in shock.
“no! i mean i am. i am. i’m just, i’m focusing on me.”)
the truth was that you were in love with your best friend and it could never happen. he had a girlfriend for starters, you were attempting to claw your way into a man’s club and you knew that meant you couldn’t date any of the guys without the media hyper focusing on it.
you could imagine all the headlines if you’d threw caution to the wind and dated max. they’d all go after you and not after him. you thought for a moment if you could handle it. you knew you couldn’t.
you wanted max but you doubted it was mutual. you wanted max but it’d never happen, it could never happen. as long as you wanted a career, you couldn’t have the guy.
he walks up to you, grinning as he turns to the bartender and orders your favourite.
“what are you smiling about?”
“nothing. just, happy you’re here.” he hands you your drink and clinks them together. “i missed you.”
“i’m here. i’m always here.”
“so? i miss you even when you’re here. i think about when you won’t be here and i get upset. i’m thinking of glueing us together.”
“wouldn’t be very helpful when we drive our cars.”
“we’ll figure something out.” he takes a sip of his glass. thinking to himself for a moment. you wish for a moment you can read his thoughts. is he thinking about you? about the dress in his favourite colour? the fact you hired a makeup artist for tonight? that you spent hours on your hair? is he thinking about her?
“wanna ditch?”
“huh?” you ask confused. “we can’t. you said that this was important.”
“i spoke to everyone worth speaking to.” he shrugs. “we can stay if you’d like.”
“no, no. let’s go.”
he smiles at you, eyes crinkly and you want to kiss him so badly but you don’t. you can’t.
you leave the room together. giggling like kids as you attempt to sneak out. no one notices, or if they do, they pretend not to. when he reaches for your hand, you wrap yours around it.
as a shy, precocious child, when max had effectively taken you under his wing, you’d do whatever he’d ask. even as an adult, you’d do the same. when he kissed you in his hotel room that night, you kissed him back.
“is this okay?” he whispers, as his hand was on the zipper on the back of your dress. you nod and kiss him again. he groans as you press yourself down on him.
you step out of your dress, as he plays with the waistband of your panties. he smooths his thumb against the exposed skin as you stand in front of him. he leans in and kisses your hip.
“is this for me?” he looks at your matching lingerie set. you don’t know what to say. it was to make you feel sexy but he’s doing that for you now with the way his eyes darken as they look at you.
“do you want it to be for you?” he nods and you grin. “it’s always for you.”
“lie down.”
“why?”
“i want to eat you out. lie down, please.”
something in the way he sounded in that moment made you immediately listen. he sounded desperate. desperate for you.
losing your virginity to the man you’re in love with was never in the plan, but as you lie against the pillows as his face sits between your legs, you don’t care. you almost sing for him as he goes down on you. he presses his ring finger and middle finger in slowly and you shake as your legs lock in on his head.
the aftershocks tremble through your body as he crawls up and kisses you. smoothing his free hand against your skin.
“what about your girlfriend?” he shoots you a side-eye.
“now you ask?” he grins as you giggle. “we’re not together anymore. i never thought she was really for me. i don’t know. i think i compare every girl to you.”
you freeze. he kisses you goodnight and falls asleep but how could you sleep knowing that?
a week later, they’re back together and you try to swallow the hot tears that threaten to show. you channel all the energy into the race and place higher than him.
deserved.
yet, it still doesn’t get rid of the pain in your stomach when he posts her on his instagram with the caption - “my greatest prize.”

Don't Hold My Hand (I'll Break Your Heart) || Tommy Shelby x Fem OC ~ Prologue
Summary: How can one recover from having their life swept out from under theit feet? When a promising future becomes lost, shattered by a past that should have remained long forgotten? Is care and love enough to undo the damage, or will it just be a sweet balm to give a brief respite of the pain before the unavoidable end?
Word Count: 3.7k
Warnings: Vague description of war injuries
Author's note: This fic is loosely based on Me Before You, keyword loosely. I don't have many information on what voluntary nurses did after the war nor how did they treat those with long term injuries, but I am working as best as I can with what I know so do not expect this to be entirely historically accurate. There also may be some ableism akin to the period but it will be kept minimal
This is also my first time writing Tommy with an OC! Say hello to Charlotte Florence Tindall everyone! She is an OC I've had for 3 years based in Lady Sybill Crawley from Downton Abbey

The gates to Arrow House stood tall and imponent amidst a thick grove in the depths of Warwickshire. The estate’s name had been forged in sturdy steel and perched high above the iron and brick archways, kept in pristine condition despite the long exposure to the elements, with the family’s proud surname hanging just below in equal condition. Charlotte could easily imagine an unfortunate servant sent there on the daily with a ladder and some polisher, his only duty being to keep the family’s name spotless, literally.
The journey towards the manor was brief and silent, the bumps in the road barely noticeable in the luxurious car that had picked her up from the train station, with leather seats and a smoothly purring engine. She knew little about the brands and commodities money could afford, but the vehicle, driven by a smartly dressed man in a crisp suit, surely cost more than all the money she had ever owned or would ever own in her life as a former VAD nurse.
The Great War had taken many opportunities, but in its wake, it had unexpectedly given some. Hordes of girls and women turned to their nearest recruitment offices or hospitals to receive express courses in nursing and home care, to serve their country side by side with the men, restoring to health those who had been wounded in combat and caring for those who had given it all until they had no more left. Field hospitals, Red Cross stations, local hospitals, and convalescence homes; all packed to the gunnels with soldiers who had been wounded, scarred, maimed, and traumatised beyond repair.
But the war had come to an end. The volunteers, the ones who had risen to the task, scattered and went back to their lives. And so did Charlotte. Only to realise the long battle had just begun. The men would not recover only because the conflict had concluded. Many remained who would need lifetime care and attention that not many families were trained or willing to provide. The nurses returned, offering their skills in little advertisements printed in newspapers or glued to shop windows.
She had it easy, in a way. Early in 1919, a man she cared for harnessed her in to be his private nurse, but that lasted until he came forward with less honourable propositions. Then came an elderly colonel, whom she watched over up until his last breath. And most recently, a strapping young sergeant, whose fiance, who didn’t take kindly to having a young woman dress and wash him, nearly chased Charlotte off.
She quickly grew disenchanted with the job, having found mostly trouble and no small amount of tears in it. Perhaps she was not made for this as she originally thought. Maybe she would do better as a cashier or cook; she could seek a post as a secretary or a board girl in the telephone company. She had learned enough to defend herself as a seamstress. Anything to keep her clothed and fed while sparing her the suffering.
But one day, a letter arrived at her door. A letter sent by the treasurer of Shelby Company Limited. The infamous Polly Gray. A shiver ran down her spine when she read the name in elegant calligraphy over expensive paper, and a part of her feared the envelope would burst in her hands like a hand grenade.
Who in Birmingham didn’t know about the Shelbys? In the slums and the rookeries, people didn’t pray to God; they prayed to the Peaky Blinders. They owned the factories, the distilleries, the pubs, and the institutions. They owned the police. They owned the very streets the people walked every day, their houses, their money, and their lives if they so wished.
And now, it seemed they wished to own Charlotte.
Mrs. Gray convened her for an interview at their estate since they requested her services as a nurse to care for a war veteran. The letter provided little more information other that they offered generous pay, accommodations, and a day off of her choosing. A preset date and time had been included, next to a train ticket to get her to the station closest to them.
Charlotte could not tell exactly what drove her to actually assist. Perhaps she wished to know how and why they found her. Maybe the lure of a salary twice the average had lured her in. Or the morbid curiosity of meeting this soldier; as far as she knew, the Shelby brothers didn’t need anything from anyone.
When she arrived at the manor, a stern-faced woman took her coat and bag. She barely had time to admire her surroundings before the maid led her towards a drawing room. Dark wood in panels and furniture, crimson wallpaper, two walls entirely lined with bookshelves filled with books of all sorts, some in pristine condition and others worn and falling apart.
Amidst all, in a settee of black velvet, sat Polly Gray. Pearls hugged her neck, hung from her ears, and adorned the front of her silver frock. Bracelets and rings decorated her fingers. Masses of papers covered the tea table before her, which she methodically separated into neat piles. By her side were a glass of whiskey and a cigarette with crimson stains, the ashtray filled to the brim. The face powder could not conceal entirely the dark circles underneath her eyes, and some fine streaks of grey contrasted against her golden chocolate curls. A woman not quite old in age but worn out tremendously by troubles and tribulations Charlotte didn’t know.
She cleared her throat, since she appeared so immersed in her paperwork she didn’t notice her.
“Mrs Gray”
“Sit” The harshness of the command contrasted with the undeniable softness of her voice, edged with barely contained nervousness, as if she stood ready to collapse. Hurriedly, she collected the scattered papers and dropped them in a pile at her side, just in time for the stern maid to place before them a tea tray, all polished silverware and hand-painted porcelain. Mrs. Gray and her spent several minutes in fraught silence, stirring a cup of fragrant tea with two sugars, while Mrs. Gray added the last of her whiskey glass into her cup. Charlotte waited for her to speak first, but the woman seemed to be in no rush, which only added to her own anxiousness.
“Mrs. Gray. You called me here. You sent me a train ticket and a driver to pick me up. Why?”
She stirred her beverage methodically, making five perfect clockwise rounds with the spoon and gently tapping it on the rim twice. Staring into the steaming liquid while she pondered her words.
“You are a nurse, aren’t you? You have field experience, and have also have cared for disabled soldiers." Not an interrogation, merely a statement. She didn’t question her about how she knew that. If she so desired, she could track down her school teacher and ask her how well she did in maths when she was nine. But that still didn’t provide her with answers.
“I am. I have worked with several patients, and if you wish, I can provide referen-”
She cut Charlotte off with a wave of her hand. “I already have your references. I spoke with your previous employers myself.”
A cold shiver spread down her legs. What could she possibly require from her that she take such an effort to map out her past? If she had that information, it meant they had checked her background and that of her family and close friends. And she assumed she had passed whatever unspoken test they carried on her; otherwise, they wouldn’t have brought her straight into their den.
But again, why?
Mrs. Gray put down the teacup and finally looked at the other woman’s face for the first time since her arrival. Her eyes were large, deep in colour, and full of wisdom and caution.
“Do you have any experience with men with reduced mobility? That is, men who are wheelchair-bound?”
That treaded closer to her area of expertise. For a brief moment, she feared she would be taken to a dimly lit basement where she’d be asked to save the life of a grievously wounded man with a gun pressed to her temple. Or maybe she just read far too many crime novels.
“I do. I worked with many men who had lost their ability to walk, either by spinal injury or loss of  limb."Before the following pause prolonged for too long, Charlotte pressed the matter further. “Is that why you called me? You have a veteran who can’t  walk."She spoke the words carefully, since she had learned through trial and error that not all people reacted well when she spoke too harshly about the state of the patient, so she tiptoed around the subject with carefully chosen words.
Suddenly she stood, setting the cup aside with such carelessness that the tea splattered everywhere, staining the lace covering the side table.
“Come with me." She headed towards the hallway, not even looking to see if Charlotte followed. She barely had time to steal one more sip before rushing behind her, straining her legs to keep up with her pace. She led her through a back door and out of the house, towards a stone and gravel backyard, smelling of horses and petrol. Other than a few hounds and a lone gardener trimming some bushes, no one else was around. No one listening but Lottie.
“My three nephews enlisted around the same time in 1914. And I will forever be grateful that the three of them made it home alive." She walked with her hands behind her back like a man. With that ramrod straight posture and her puffed chest, she could put a general to shame. It certainly worked to intimidate her, and she walked a step behind her, feeling unworthy of keeping up her pace.
“John and Arthur came back okay. Or as okay as men could after the things they saw and did” John and Arthur. Both names rang a bell, but she hadn’t seen them personally. They acted as henchmen more than businessmen, terrorising the factories and the foremen in their factories. Legend has it that a foreman in a Sparkbrook steelworks bought a house with bribes for tossing bodies in the furnace.
“But Tommy” She continued, bringing her attention back to the present. “He was a tunneller. There was a collapse near the end of everything. I don’t know the entire story, but the tunnel caved in on them. Out of fifteen boys, only five were dug  out."She fell silent for a moment and made the sign of the cross. Pain wrung Charlotte’s heart, but she didn’t allow it to settle. She had quickly learned to push pain into the back of her mind during the war. If she allowed herself to feel it, she’d collapse like wet clay.
“They brought him back on a stretcher. I never thought a person could be more blue than white and have more broken bones than whole ones. He spent the rest of the war in a hospital room and remained there for a good part of the next year. Every doctor expected him to just die in his sleep, but he refused to give up. He made a full recovery and came home as if nothing happened.”
The tone of her words and Lottie’s very presence there indicated that not all had gone well.
“He took over his duties in the business and married a girl he fancied. They even had a son. No indicator that something could be wrong". Her pace had slowed, allowing her to catch up, now walking by her side, not wanting to miss a word. She had left the backyard behind and now moved into bare grass; from the entrance, she hadn’t quite grasped how far the estate stretched. It could easily and comfortably house two manors equal in size with their own stables and gardens.
“He suddenly started complaining of pain in his legs. Stiffness, soreness, especially in the mornings” She recognised the symptoms immediately but chose to remain silent while she spoke. “Soon he had trouble walking; sometimes his knees gave out and he just fell. He resisted the cane as much as he could, but in time he could not remain upright without it for  long.
“We sought a doctor in London. He said a disc in his back had cracked in the accident. The fracture had been stable, but as time passed, it worsened and began to collapse and compress his  spine."She waved her hand dismissively. “I didn’t understand any of the technical words, but the doctor said the injury would progress. The spine would be compressed more and more until he lost all use of his  legs.
Even though Charlotte didn’t see her expression, she noticed in her words the sorrow she felt for her nephew. And she didn’t blame her. To have him delivered home in pieces, seeing him go through a miraculous recovery only for this to happen. His life robbed from him, one sliver at a time, seeing his own body fail him day by day.
Mrs. Gray exhaled slowly, as if regaining her composure. “Ever since he got the diagnosis, he changed. He became irritable and wrathful. He refused to be seen with the cane; whenever he met people in the office, he leant into something or sat down. Then he refused to be seen altogether and handled business locked in his office." She pulled out a cigar case from her dress pocket and offered her one, which Lottie kindly refused.
“When he no longer could manage stairs easily, he started working from home. He seldom saw people; only his brothers and I could visit him” The smoke left her mouth with each word, since she consumed the cigarette so desperately she barely had time to breathe out. She thought that she didn’t need all that information to do her job, but she didn’t interrupt her. She sounded like she needed someone to listen to her at least once.
She finished the first cigarette and quickly lit a second with the leftover stub. Her crimson coated lips parted, as if she wanted to say something else but chose not to at the last second. Instead her features contorted in a snarl briefly, lips pursed like she tasted something bitter, and then shook her head and regained her composure.
“He bought this manor to be away from everyone. He wanted to live alone, with only the staff to help him, but I couldn’t leave him alone in that state, even if he refused to be helped. He may be an arse, but he is still my nephew” Lottie snickered at her last statement, disguising the inappropriate sound as a cough.
“I realise I could not handle it alone. There is just so much to be done, and many things he would never let me do for him” Another lit cigarette, consumed as frantically as the first two. “I tried to hire him a personal maid but she had the talent of a doornail”
“That’s why you sought me?” It made sense now. A common maid couldn’t handle his injuries and his needs like she could.
A bitter laugh fell from her lips “I sought a nurse, yes. And another one. And another one” She didn’t pay heed to her concerned expression “He never got along with any of them. Despised them, I dare say. Tommy cannot stomach being stared at or treated with pity” She made a mental note of that for her future work, that is, if she survived the day “Not all the pay raises and benefits in the world convinced them to stay long. I offered to pay the last one’s bank loans if she reconsidered her resignation, but that only held her in for another three weeks”
Charlotte’s resolution to take the job faltered by the minute. Why would she want to care for a man who seemed hellbent in making his caretakers miserable? Sure, his situation was nothing short of horrible, but did that really give him the right to spread his venom to those who tried to do good by him? And most importantly, did she really want to put herself through that? The pay was the best she had ever been offered, but would the money be worth it?
Suddenly Mrs. Gray gripped the younger woman’s hand, so tightly her fingers ached. She should have shaken her off, but the desperation in her eyes deterred her from it. She looked like a woman standing on the edge of the abyss, hanging only from her grasp.
“I personally collected your reference letters. All of your previous employers spoke of your patience and your affection. Of how your softness and cheerfulness helped them. I think you are what Tommy needs. I think you are the one who can help my nephew” Her grip tightened and an involuntary mewl of pain came from her throat. She released Lottie’s hand, and instead placed a pleading touch on her bicep.
“Please give it a try. At least for a month. I know he won’t live to be an old man. And whatever life he has left, whether it is 4 years or 4 decades, I want him to find peace. Happiness, even. I want him to have a reason to wake up in the morning” She could tell she wished to say more, but had cut off her words.
With all she laid out before her, Charlotte barely resisted the temptation to grab her purse and run for her life. But something in her words, in the story she narrated for her, it pulled at her heartstrings. She had a thing for lost causes and broken things. In the worst scenario, she would walk out depressed but with enough money to start anew.
She only had one request
“Can I meet your nephew before I make my decision?”
Mrs Gray dropped her arm and pressed her lips into a thin line, eyebrows knit together in a scowl. She wanted to say no, that much she could tell. Maybe she thought she shouldn’t see Thomas until she had her signed up so she couldn’t back out. But Charlotte wouldn’t agree on anything until she spoke to him
“Of course”
Back into the house, she took her to the second floor. Lottie quickly noticed the house had been retrofitted in ways most couldn’t afford to offer Thomas a semblance of comfort. Large paintings hung in the stairway, most of them displaying a man with blue eyes and a dominant posture, always standing with his hands behind his back.
A set of double doors stood ajar towards the back of the floor. The room behind stretched almost all the length of the house, and Lottie noticed in the wall the dents where walls had been taken down to create such a large space. The furniture stood well spaced between each other to allow wide passages, enough to comfortably fit a wheelchair. Sunlight filled the alcove, coming from the many windows with the drapes drawn back. A set of glass doors led to a magnificent veranda that overlooked the estate.
Just outside, close to the balustrade, sat a black-haired man, his back turned to them. The wheelchair he sat upon was far more complex and luxurious than the ones she had in the ward. He wore a robe and slippers, as if he had just risen from bed despite being well into the afternoon.
Mrs. Gray walked out first, while she waited just under the lintel. She stood next to the man, one hand on his shoulder.
“Tommy, there is someone I want you to meet”
“No” His voice cut through the air, deep and curt. It sounded manly, and would have been pleasing to hear in other situation
“Tommy, please give her a chance, I promise-” He cut her pleading short with a smack of his fist on the wooden armrest.
“I said no! I don’t want her here. Put her in a cab and send her away” Mrs. Gray seemed to be at her wits’ end. She crouched next to him, like when one speaks to a child. She couldn’t make out the words she hissed at him through clenched teeth, but whatever she said, he didn’t like. With surprising skill he turned the wheelchair around and nearly ran Charlotte over, having barely managed to stop the chair with a heel on the floor.
The paintings did little justice to the blueness in his eyes. A vibrant blue not often seen, but filled with ice the moment they laid on her. The smart haircut had been replaced by an overgrown mane, jet black strands curling behind the ears and waving around the top. A five o clock shadow obscured the clenched jaw down to the neck. But even unkempt like that she felt the aura of haughtiness and pride bordering on arrogance emanating from him. He held her gaze for endless seconds, and not once she shied away from his cold eyes.
“Whatever it is you think you can do for me, save it for someone else. And now, get out of my home”
He wheeled past her, moving towards the main double doors. He couldn’t really go anywhere, but she figured he planned to hide somewhere until she left.
Lottie stood there, a bit dumbfounded, while Mrs. Gray returned to her side, despair plastered in her features, mixed with barely contained anger
“He is like that sometimes, but I promise you, some days are better. I will talk to him and get him to behave, and if you-”
“I can start tomorrow” She cut her off. Her jaw hung open, eyes widened as she struggled to wrap her mind around her words. Words that shocked Charlotte as much as Mrs. Gray, for she hadn’t actually allowed them out of her mouth. They just left in a blurt. But she meant them, even if she couldn’t quite tell herself why. It went beyond the money; she wanted this job. As if something invisible pushed her to stay there; as if there she’d truly find a purpose. It made no sense, but hunches and feelings rarely did
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Gray. I think I can help your nephew.”

"Entitled" BJD collector, me
I've got an axe to grind due to a large order I have with a company. Thanks to a lovely bonus, I was able to pay off my layaway early. Re-reviewed my order, and realized I forgot to order bags (I hate those enormous boxes BJDs come in, and if they have any fancy print on them, I can't recycle them). Quick email to the company - Hey, I forgot to order bags. So sorry. Can I add a couple bags to my order? (it's a BIG order)
Doll company snaps back: "If you wanted bags, you should have ordered them when you ordered your dolls."
Oooooo-kay.
Less than 24 hours later: "The optional hands you ordered aren't the same color as the doll. Seeking your kind understanding."
I ordered the hands at the same time I ordered the doll.
I pointed out to the company that when I make a mistake, you snap at me. When YOU make a mistake, I'm supposed to be understanding. I'm pretty sure my email flew right over their heads, but that could also be a translation thing.
I'm done ordering from that company, but it made me realize that I am becoming an "entitled" collector.
It made me realize that this is a luxury hobby, but this is not a rich person's hobby. Rich people - truly wealthy people - expect to be catered to. They expect to get exactly what they want, exactly when they want it. Truly wealthy rich people would not put up with half the shit BJD collectors do. They would not accept dolls that arrive with imperfections, scratches, mis-matching resin, blushing that's already starting to peel, and 3-6 month wait times in which you hope you get what you paid for. They would not put up with poor to nonexistent customer service, not answering your questions for days to weeks at a time, and all the crazy shit that happens with shipping and delivery.
But if the rest of us acted like that as doll collectors, we would be acting "entitled." Emailing a company and asking them to make a certain type of doll is "rude." Asking when your doll is estimated to ship is "annoying." Asking for resin samples is "a waste of time." Expecting after sales service (repair/replacement parts) is "unreasonable." You pay what they tell you to pay. You get what you get. And you better fucking LIKE it, or ELSE. No returns. No cancellations. No refunds.
Tell me what other business operates this way?
My order was as much as a used car cost in my younger days. To me, that is a LOT of money to get jerked around and snapped at by a doll company.
I don't know, man. Folks who make the same complaints I do get told, "Maybe this isn't the hobby for you."
Maybe not.

Christmas special: Some gift ideas
Hello, Athe here!
I've been thinking a lot about some small gifts that I think would be perfect for the characters. Sort of like Christmas ideas for small budgets. I've tried to find some visual references and give some context for those who don't know the characters that well. It would be interesting to see what you guys would come up with, especially, for your own OCs… I'm going to leave a blank template below for anyone who wants to add some more or create their own OC version. We will reblog all your suggestions, you can also leave them in our ask which is always open. Happy holidays!
Tumblr media
Arael
Protective console case or gaming case: You can't go wrong with anything related to video games, especially if it's something with a cute aesthetic. Arael can't resist that kind of thing.
Ice cream maker: No more endless queues in the canteen. Arael will be able to make his own personalised ice cream with one of these machines.
Kigurumi: A warm pyjama to spend their hours in front of the computer playing or in your company.
Tumblr media
Zihel
Fire extinguisher: It goes without saying why it's a good idea for Zihel to have a fire extinguisher on hand.
Some new clothes: The truth is that his clothes are outdated and quite torn. You would do him a favour by buying him something even if he won't thank you directly. Besides, he will accept any style you want to put on him without putting up too much of a fuss.
Survival kit: Zihel has always been interested in everything related to hunting and survival. He'll surely appreciate a kit with everything he needs for an adventurous weekend (or another kind of weekend…).
Tumblr media
Kyeran
Original teapot or tea set: Kyeran really enjoys drinking hot tea, so he would love a tea set. If you take the opportunity to give it a personalised touch in keeping with his style of decoration, you will make him very happy.
Portable hammock: You never know when you'll want to rest during a desert trek. A portable hammock can be ideal for him, but also for you to share a romantic moment.
Emotional support dolls: Anything you've made by hand will be highly valued, but these cute little dolls with motivational phrases will lift anyone's spirits.
Tumblr media
Joe
Portable charger: Don't ever catch Joe without a charge on one of her many devices. Without them Joe could go crazy and you will probably be her target.
Pyjamas or satin pillowcase: Inexpensive options to recreate a luxurious experience. Either is a good choice. Joe loves to feel pampered.
Massage oil: It's likely that with this you can both participate.
Tumblr media
Opal
Handmade candles: Since Opal discovered that he has a good sense of smell, he has also found that the smells of scented candles relax him a lot. It is easy for him to get stressed or irritable, but candles help him to calm his nerves.
Watchmaking tools: Opal has started a new trade and is comfortable repairing and making wind-up watches. But he often loses his tools or they break. A new kit is always welcome.
Work apron: Another thing he has recently discovered is that he enjoys working with the soil and could do with a work apron to keep all his gardening tools in.
Tumblr media
Ariel
Poker cards with famous musicians: He likes to play card games, especially if gambling is involved. If you buy him some personalised cards like these, you can be sure he'll always have them with him.
Special edition vinyls: Any music fan would love something like this. You can't go wrong with an original edition of one of your favourite bands.
Skull-shaped ice bucket or whiskey set: There are quite a few objects in this shape in Ariel's house. We thought he might like something to do with alcohol.
Tumblr media
Akane
Pizza oven: Akane is a ramen and pizza fanatic. This time, we thought it might be nice to have a mini oven so that her pizzas are always perfect.
Car bin: Everyone knows that Akane loves driving, but not so much tidiness and cleanliness. Help her to keep it all tidy with this mini-trash bin for the car.
Exercise dice: She loves sport. We suggest you give her something more original than a pair of trainers or a bottle of water with a dice to help him choose her daily exercises.
Tumblr media
Hasiel
Ultrasonic cleaner: Anyone who owns glasses will understand Hasi's problems with keeping his glasses clean. You'd be doing him a big favour by buying him a little machine like this.
Writers' Socks: Although he wouldn't usually wear colourful, flashy clothes, socks are perfect for letting his imagination run wild. Especially if they are about a subject that interests you as much as books do.
Diorama bookmarks: Another Christmas classic are bookmarks, but I have found some that recreate mythical scenes from classic books. They are available for many works and can be a perfect complement to special editions of books.
Tumblr media
Pin
Pencil holder: I couldn't resist making this little inside joke. A little reminder won't hurt either.
Snack advent calendar: Why ask for one gift when you can have 24? He would love any advent calendar, but a snack calendar seems appropriate for him.
Projector: With a small projector he can watch films and series in his sorority room or invite you to join him.
Tumblr media
Maske
Fingerprint padlock: A secure padlock for a person who hides a lot of secrets. Maske loves tech gadgets and keeping their privacy safe.
Cup warmer: For someone who drinks a lot of coffee and has insomnia, this cup warmer will keep your cups at the perfect temperature.
Spice collection: It's no secret that Maske likes to cook, so they have a lot of utensils, so the smartest thing I could think of is to give them some kind of exotic spice kit so they can innovate in their kitchen and get out of their comfort zone a bit.
Tumblr media
Aracne
Gothic picnic basket: A perfect basket for two to have a romantic meal in the forest with Opal.
Couples' keepsake wheel: Important dates and memories can be engraved on it. A romantic and personalised gift.
Sewing scissors: A nice pair of scissors is a must in the sewing basket of a seamstress.

Tumblr media
Pin
PortalĂĄpices: No me he podido resistir a hacer esta pequeĂąa broma interna.

Supercar Diminished Value and Loss of Use Claims in Florida
When a supercar such as a Lamborghini, Ferrari, or McLaren is involved in an accident, the aftermath can be financially devastating. Beyond repair costs, these high-end vehicles often suffer from diminished value—the loss in market value due to their accident history—even if repaired to perfect condition. Additionally, loss of use claims are essential to compensate owners for the time their supercar is unavailable for use. Understanding how these claims work under Florida law is crucial for maximizing compensation.
Understanding Diminished Value for Supercars
Diminished value refers to the reduction in a vehicle's market value after being damaged in an accident. Supercars, in particular, face steep reductions in value because potential buyers of luxury vehicles often seek pristine, accident-free cars. Even top-tier repairs cannot erase the accident from the vehicle’s history.
For example, a 2020 Ferrari 488 GTB with a minor accident may face significant devaluation simply because of the repair history. Buyers of such cars look for perfection, and the stigma of an accident can lower the value by tens of thousands of dollars. Diminished value claims ensure that owners are compensated for this post-accident loss in market value.
Loss of Use Claims for Supercars
Loss of use refers to the inability to use your supercar while it’s being repaired. For vehicles like a Porsche 911 GT3 or a McLaren 720S, this can be a significant financial and personal inconvenience, especially if the repairs take weeks or months. Florida law allows for loss of use claims to cover rental costs for a similar luxury vehicle or compensate for the time the vehicle is unavailable.
For example, while your Lamborghini Huracán is in the shop, you could claim for a comparable rental vehicle. If a similar supercar rental isn’t available, you may be entitled to compensation for the loss of enjoyment and use.
Why You Need a Supercar Accident Lawyer
If your Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani Huayra or Bugatti Chiron has been damaged, you’re entitled to more than just repair costs. Many people try to handle diminished value or loss of use claims on their own, only to face denials or lowball offers from insurance companies. Insurers often claim that you lack the documentation needed to prove your loss or even tell you outright that you aren’t entitled to compensation.
This is where retaining a supercar injury lawyer is crucial. Insurance companies are aware that consumers often don’t understand the intricate details of making a successful diminished value claim, and they take advantage of this. However, when you have an attorney who specializes in these claims, the situation changes.
Tumblr media
Dealing with diminished value and loss of use claims for supercars requires a thorough understanding of Florida law and the unique challenges posed by luxury vehicles. Insurance companies often attempt to deny or minimize these claims, leaving supercar owners with inadequate compensation. By working with a law firm that specializes in supercar claims, like The Sheldrick Law Firm, you can ensure that your vehicle's true value is recognized and that you are compensated for your losses. Don't settle for less—reach out to us for high caliber representation and protect your investment.

FLORIDA CASE LAW:
DIMINISHED VALUE
In American Southern Insurance Co. v. Griggs, 959 So. 2d 322 (Fla. 5th DCA 2007), the court reinforced the right of vehicle owners to recover diminished value as part of a property damage claim when the at-fault party is negligent. The ruling emphasized that even if a vehicle is fully repaired, it may not regain its pre-accident market value, making diminished value compensation essential. This is particularly important for luxury and supercar owners, as vehicles like a Ferrari or Porsche can suffer significant market value losses due to their accident history, regardless of repair quality. Griggs solidifies the legitimacy of pursuing diminished value claims in third-party cases, ensuring that owners can claim both repair costs and the market value lost after an accident, helping to avoid substantial financial loss.
In Trinity Universal Insurance Co. v. Metzger, 360 So. 2d 960 (Fla. 3d DCA 1978), the court ruled that vehicle owners are entitled to recover both the cost of repairs and the diminished value from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. The court recognized that even after a car has been fully repaired, it can still lose value due to the stigma of having been in an accident. This case is especially relevant for supercar owners, as the value of high-end vehicles like a Ferrari or Lamborghini can drop significantly post-accident, even with flawless repairs. Trinity Universal underscores the importance of pursuing diminished value claims alongside repair costs to ensure full compensation for the loss in value.
In Papadopoulos v. Auto-Owners Insurance Co., 581 So. 2d 1387 (Fla. 2d DCA 1991), the court reinforced the principle that vehicle owners can recover diminished value in third-party claims, meaning the at-fault party's insurance is responsible for compensating the owner for both repairs and any decrease in the vehicle's market value. This case emphasized that, even if a vehicle is fully repaired, it might still suffer a loss in value due to its accident history, which is particularly important for luxury and high-end vehicles. The ruling in Papadopoulos is critical because it clarifies that a vehicle owner can pursue the full amount of the vehicle's lost value in addition to the costs associated with the repair. The court's decision helps establish the right to claim compensation for the market stigma attached to a vehicle that has been in an accident, despite any efforts to restore it to its original condition. This case is often cited in Florida when pursuing third-party diminished value claims, ensuring that accident victims are fully compensated for their losses, beyond just the cost of repairs.
These landmark Florida cases serve as strong legal precedents for pursuing diminished value claims, ensuring that vehicle owners can recover not only the cost of repairs but also the loss in market value caused by an accident. By understanding and leveraging these rulings, supercar and luxury vehicle owners can seek full compensation when they’re not at fault, protecting the true value of their investment.

Has Your Diminished Value or Loss Of Use Claim Been Denied?
Insurance companies often deny Diminished Value or Loss of Use claims for various reasons, and it's important to understand why. Below are five common reasons an insurance company might deny your claim, along with details about each.
1. Lack of Proper Documentation Insurance companies often deny claims because they argue there is insufficient evidence to support the diminished value or loss of use claim. They may assert that you haven't provided the necessary proof of the vehicle’s pre-accident value, post-repair market value, or clear documentation showing the time period for which the vehicle was unavailable.
Tip: To counter this, ensure you gather appraisal reports, repair bills, rental receipts, and market comparisons showing your car’s value before and after the accident. Expert reports, especially for supercars, can be essential to building a strong case.
2. Claim Filed Against the Wrong Policy If you attempt to file a first-party diminished value claim, it will likely be denied, especially in Florida, where only third-party diminished value claims are allowed. The insurance company will argue that your policy doesn't cover such claims, forcing you to pursue a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance.
Tip: Make sure you understand the difference between first-party and third-party claims. In Florida, third-party claims are allowed, meaning the at-fault driver’s insurance must cover diminished value and loss of use.
3. Failure to Meet Eligibility Criteria Insurance companies will deny claims if they believe you are not eligible based on the circumstances of the accident. If you are partially at fault or the at-fault party is underinsured, insurers might deny the claim or offer reduced compensation. They may also claim the damage does not meet their threshold for a diminished value loss.
Tip: Prove that you were not at fault, and provide evidence of how the accident directly affected your car’s market value. Legal representation can help dispute any inaccurate determinations.
4. Dismissal Due to Vehicle Type For luxury or supercars, insurers sometimes argue that because these cars are difficult to appraise or have volatile market values, the claim is exaggerated or unwarranted. They may also claim that because the car was restored to high standards, the diminished value is negligible.
Tip: Supercar owners should always use expert appraisers to establish the diminished value and loss of use claims. Independent appraisers who specialize in luxury vehicles are crucial to proving that the car has lost value, despite flawless repairs. Hiring a licensed appraiser and citing Florida case law that is relevant and in your favor will leave the defense with little to no options.
5. Dispute Over Repair Quality or Necessity Some insurance companies will argue that the repairs performed on your vehicle were unnecessary or exceeded what was required, leading to an inflated diminished value claim. They might also argue that if you failed to mitigate damages (for example, by not getting timely repairs), you may forfeit your right to a full diminished value or loss of use claim.
Tip: Always retain full documentation of your vehicle’s repair history and work done. Ensure that the repairs are performed by reputable shops specializing in luxury vehicles to avoid disputes over the quality or necessity of the work.
By understanding these common reasons for denial, you’ll be better equipped to strengthen your diminished value or loss of use claim. If your claim has been denied, seeking legal assistance from a firm experienced in supercar claims can help you navigate the complexities and challenge the insurance company’s decision. Should you have any problems, allow for attorney Kayla Sheldrick to handle your case. How To Get Highest Benefit For Damaged Cars: Cash For Car In Brisbane
Having a car that is in a bad way can be quite a heel. It uses your property in a worthless way, it does not appreciate, and finding a buyer willing to accept one that has been wrecked is almost impossible. Getting enough cash for cars in Brisbane might make it very difficult to find the right one.
This means that many Brisbane car owners do not have the luxury of trading their second-hand cars or selling them privately. All of which begs the question, how does one sell a wrecked vehicle without losing money and still make some?
Picture this: Your vehicle was involved in a collision and the restoration expenses are well above your reach. It's obvious to you daily, as it occupies your driveway and emits an obnoxious amount of lost value from the wasted space.
Tumblr media
You feel it is still of some value but the idea of going through selling a car without flipping out beforehand is overwhelming. From listing the car to haggling with potential buyers and handling all of the paperwork — it can be a huge stress (especially when your car is anything but perfect). Moreover, it loses its value over time.
Then think about the aggravation and cost of fixing it up just to get rid of - when you could be using that same money as a small down payment on a lawn tractor. Even the repairs are not as big of an issue; they usually cost a lot to fix and take more time and there is no guarantee that you will recover your expenses in a sale.
What if I told you there is a way to sell your car for more money - and the managing process would be much quicker than selling it on Craigslist?

Get your car: Except that there has to be nothing prepared (make sure you take all sorts of personal effects out) and have the applicable paperwork. It reduces time and last-minute confusion.
Conclusion
Selling a car with serious damage need not be an arduous task. Fast Car Removals to get cash for cars in Brisbane allows you an opportunity to scrap your junk car and get paid instantly, without having to fix it up or go through any hassle in selling. If you choose a good service, get multiple quotes, and give an accurate evaluation of your car's state; then you can make quite a profit in addition to clearing up that room on your driveway.
Do not allow a car that is already declining in value to continue; use the best pipe-pushing roller services and get some money back from it.

TRIGGERS: death, gambling
basics.
full name. victor ethan alvarado nicknames. vic gender. cis male pronouns. he/him age. twenty - three hometown. los angeles, ca occupation. groundskeeper / engineering student at universidad de bellas artes de valparaĂso
personality.
zodiac. capricorn ( responsible, disciplined, unforgiving ) positive traits. astute, principled, courageous negative traits. inflexible, arrogant, irritable   special talents. great throwing arm, good at puzzles
biography.
victor was born and raised in the suburbs of los angeles, california. his dad died and his mom remarried before he had even started preschool, so he was raised by his mom and stepdad and he doesn’t really remember his father. he grew up an only child in a stable albeit a bit lonesome home. his mom was a free spirit and a busy bee who worked all sorts of jobs and followed her every whim while his stepfather brought in a solid income as a neurosurgeon who seemed to be a workaholic.
he likes baseball, cars, old movies, and learning how things work. although he has great memorization skills and picks up on things quickly, he tended to struggle academically because he doesn’t test well and he preferred to focus on things like being a popular varsity athlete and his after school job where he worked for a local handyman. he got sent out on small jobs like installing new appliances or simple home repairs and while it wasn’t exactly his ideal gig, it was interesting and allowed victor to earn his own income.
his parents cited stuff like ‘ teaching him all about hard work ’  for why they always refused to give him money when he would ask for something like new baseball equipment or a set of tools. it had never occurred to victor that something else could possibly be going on, so it was a huge shock when he started reviewing colleges and making calculations and his parents finally had to come clean about the fact that they were completely broke. his stepdad had been a gambling addict for most of victor’s life, burning through all of the family’s savings when he was still in middle school. his mom had always known but kept the truth from victor until it was absolutely necessary to speak up.
he completely flipped out on them, stormed out of the house and couch surfed among his friend group until graduation. he was just barely able to scrape up an acceptance to ucla, but his finances were always tight and it was difficult balancing full time classes, looking for a cheap place to live, and continuing to work the same job he had in high school.
then one day an elderly regular customer of his died and left everything he had to victor in the will. he hardly even knew the old man, but it turned out that the quiet wealthy man had no living relatives of close friends, but he had always enjoyed victor’s company despite how little they interacted.
he inherited a few cars, a yacht, a country club membership, an enormous bank account, a nice house in los angeles and a luxurious private property in chile. he sold off a few things, but he was intrigued by the house in chile ( and struggling a little bit in school ), so he decided to make the move when he was twenty. the only stipulation in the old man’s will was that he had to maintain any property that he was going to live at, so victor considers himself the official groundskeeper of his home in casablanca and does a lot of the general upkeep himself. he started classes at the university about two years ago. he’s been burning through his prerequisites while he tries to decide between majoring in electrical engineering or automobile engineering. school is a little easier for him now that he doesn’t have to stress about finances, at least.
wanted connections.

Easy way to tell, can you see any red Porches nearby guys?
Tumblr media
Nope, not really. Most of the cars I see are Mercedes, Chevrolets, Ford's, and the usual Volkswagen fucking Beetle. Unless you count the 911, most Porsches are a rarity for the middle class. Really, it's only available for those in the upper middle class, that have the necessary payment or cash to buy one. It's also available for the high-class folks, so it's a luxury.
Tumblr media
Oh! By the way, you're going to need this! *hands out a card to Hajime*
Tumblr media
Okay?...*Grabs the card and begins to read* "Soda and Son's: The Best Car Mechanic Shop In the Country". Who's that?
Tumblr media
Oh, that's a mechanical repair store, run by the Sodas. They're well renowned for their incredible mechanic techniques, and the ability to get the car fixed, no matter the cost! The son of the owner, Kazuichi Soda, is a fellow classmate of mine. He's the Ultimate Mechanic and it really shows when he gets to work.
Tumblr media
While he certainly has his issues, and believe me, that's just counting the crush on my fellow classmate, Sonia. But he's a good guy deep down, and If there is anyone I would most definitely trust in fixing and repairing cars, it's him. So I recommend you check it out and go to his repair shop because it's truly of high quality. The address and the company number are on the card.
Tumblr media
Huh... thanks Fuyuhiko! That's really nice of you to do something like this. Though I'm going to have to either take a bus or my dad's car from now on, because well *points to the upside-down car* Y'know.

Why is Tesla selling insurance and what does it mean for drivers?
Re-published under Creative Commons license, originally published in ‘The Conversation’: https://theconversation.com/why-is-tesla-selling-insurance-and-what-does-it-mean-for-drivers-130910
In the past year, Elon Musk and Tesla have fascinated the world with new innovations like the Tesla Cybertruck. There is excitement about most new Tesla products, but one hugely important one has been largely overlooked. With far less fanfare and no stage performance by Musk, Tesla started offering car insurance last September. In the long run, this is going to have a major impact on most of our lives – perhaps even greater than Tesla’s more eye-catching innovations.
Tesla Insurance is only available for Tesla vehicles in some states of the US at present. It will expand the number of territories gradually over time. But as with the Tesla Cybertruck, the company first wants to see how the business holds up to whatever is thrown at it and whether it cracks under pressure.
For those eligible for Tesla Insurance, the company claims to offer premiums 20% to 30% lower than rivals. Yet even if you are in an area where you can request a quote, Tesla won’t necessarily make you an offer. It sometimes still refers drivers to a traditional insurance partner instead. It may be that Tesla chooses the clearer, less risky cases and sends more complex ones to insurers with more experience and appetite to handle them.
So why is Tesla selling car insurance? For one thing, it has the real-time data from all its drivers’ behaviour and the performance of its vehicle technology, including camera recordings and sensor readings, so it can estimate the risk of accidents and repair costs accurately. This reliance on data may well mean it never branches into selling insurance to drivers of other manufacturers’ cars.
At the moment, Tesla is offering insurance premiums calculated with aggregated anonymous data. In future it could roll out more customised services, like the ones offered by insurers using telematic black boxes, to offer drivers (cheaper) quotes based on how they actually drive.
Every time there is an accident, Tesla has instant access to data about the driver behaviour that led to it. One attraction for the company is that it can evaluate how some of its technologies, like autopilot, stability control, anti-theft systems and bullet-resistant steel, can reduce risk.
Another motivation for Tesla is that some insurers charge a relatively high premium for Tesla cars. One reason is that they still don’t have much historic information about the cost of repairs of electric vehicles. By vertically integrating insurance into its offering, Tesla brings down the price of owning its products.
At the same time, insurance is a barrier to many innovations that Tesla is targeting for the future. With the insurance taken care of, it will be easier to sell self-driving vehicles or send people to Mars (with sister company SpaceX). Like many things Elon Musk does, this both solves a short-term problem and fits the longer-term strategy. It’s a little like how Tesla focused on producing luxury vehicles first to finance the infrastructure for selling cheaper cars like the Tesla Model 3.
How insurance is changing
Tesla has one more reason for offering insurance, which is that the sector is changing: a tech company disrupting it fits the zeitgeist perfectly. My research at Loughborough University has looked into this disruption. I evaluated 32 insurance providers around the world including Tesla and found that artificial intelligence, big data, the internet of things, blockchain and edge computing were all rewiring insurance, both literally and metaphorically.
Broadly speaking, the work of the insurer is shifting from local human expert underwriters to automation driven by big data and AI. The existing industry players that I evaluated essentially fell into three categories. Some had recognised they cannot compete with tech companies. They were focusing on interacting with customers, branding and marketing, while outsourcing everything else to companies with the relevant skills.
Other insurers were trying to add new technologies to their existing business model. For instance, some are using chatbots that apply machine learning and natural language processing to offer live customer support. Yet another group had more fully embraced the new technological capabilities. For example, life insurers like Vitality and Bupa now encourage customers to use wearable monitoring devices to offer them guidance on improving their health and avoiding accidents.
Alongside all these were the new breed of insurers, with Tesla perhaps the best example. Others include Chinese giants Alibaba and Tencent. Just like Apple and Google are making incursions into banking and finance, these are tech-savvy companies with many existing customers who are adding insurance to their portfolio of services. In every case, the capabilities of AI and big data-driven automation have acted as a catalyst.
What it means for drivers
In the short term, Tesla drivers can look forward to insurance that is arguably more seamless and convenient and may well be cheaper – particularly if they clock up fewer miles and drive safely. (Drivers should still compare prices with other insurers: the likes of Progressive and GEICO are among those that insure Tesla vehicles.)
In the longer term, this is a sign that insurance – like banking, road tax and many services – will be driven by real-time data. It will probably change our behaviour for the better. We will probably drive slower, eat healthier food and exercise more – even if libertarians will be uneasy.
This shift will challenge our attitudes towards personal information privacy. Some of us will value the benefits of being open and transparent with our personal information, while others might seek solutions that keep their data with them. Edge computing has potential here, since it allows some data processing to be done on your device so that your personal data doesn’t need to be sent to a central server.
So Tesla and Elon Musk have not just added another revenue stream to their many successful endeavours. They are also helping to fundamentally change the way that we interact with insurance providers. In the future, insurers will be more like a partner on our journey both by car and on foot – both on Earth and beyond.

Water, water everywhere... or not.
I'm feeling a bit like a (rich) 16th century Londoner, timing my water use. The kitchen tap is broken -- it won't stop running and fiddling the valves under the sink has no effect. The only way to stop a steady stream is to shut off *all* the house water. Time to wash the dishes... step outside and turn the valve. Fill up the kettle, use the restrooms -- the water is on. All done... step outside and turn the valve. Bath time... put on shoes, step outside, turn the value... But it's still luxurious. I can turn the valve whenever I want. I don't have to wait until my next water day.
When's it going to be fixed? No idea. I reported it Thursday night on the property management website. I phoned the next day and they "called a technician". I bugged them that afternoon -- "tell us if you don't hear from the technician in 24 hours". ding. Saturday, 24 hours and a few minutes later , I called and left them a message. It's now Sunday afternoon. This is not the first time this company has been slow with repairs.
The icing on the cake is that when we using the big garage door to get to the valve, the door got stuck and then the opener belt snapped. *BANG* as the door dropped to the ground. It's a good thing we don't park the cars inside. I filed another ticket. We've rented this 1950s house for 15 years so occasional repairs are to be expected.

4. Cost Factors Influencing Insurance Premiums
Several factors influence the cost of car import insurance, including the vehicle’s value, make and model, shipping method, and destination. Benefits: Understanding these factors helps you estimate the insurance cost and budget accordingly. For instance, luxury vehicles or high-value cars may incur higher premiums due to their replacement costs.
5. Required Documentation for Insurance
To obtain car import insurance, you’ll need to provide specific documents, such as:
Proof of Purchase: Invoice or receipt showing the car’s value.

Pre-existing Damage: Any damage noted before shipping may not be covered.
Unauthorized Modifications: Vehicles with unauthorized modifications might not be insured.

Report the Incident: Notify your insurer immediately after an incident.
Document the Damage: Provide evidence such as photos and repair estimates.
Submit a Claim: Fill out the necessary forms and submit required documents.
Benefits: Familiarizing yourself with the claims process ensures that you can efficiently handle any issues that arise and receive compensation in a timely manner.

To find the most cost-effective insurance, consider these tips:
Compare Quotes: Get quotes from multiple providers to find the best rate.
Seek Discounts: Look for available discounts, such as bundling insurance or safe driving bonuses.
Review Coverage: Ensure that lower rates don’t compromise essential coverage.
Benefits: These strategies help you balance cost and coverage, ensuring that you get the best value for your insurance premium.
9. Understanding Dubai’s Specific Insurance Requirements
Dubai has specific regulations and requirements for car import insurance. Make sure your policy complies with local laws and regulations. Benefits: Adhering to these requirements avoids legal issues and ensures that your insurance is valid in Dubai.
