The History of Fraternities and Sororities in US Colleges
Tumblr media
The modern concept of fraternities as we know it today, with Greek letters and rituals, began to take shape in the early 19th century. The first social fraternity, Kappa Alpha Society, was founded in 1825 at Union College in Schenectady, New York. This was followed by the establishment of other fraternities, including Sigma Phi (1827), Delta Phi (1827), and Psi Upsilon (1833). Oldest Black Sorority: Alpha Kappa Alpha is also a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), an umbrella organization for historically Black Greek-letter organizations. Today, there are over 9 million students participating in fraternities and sororities in the United States and Canada, with hundreds of different organizations represented on college campuses. Alpha Phi Alpha has a rich history and has played a significant role in the African American community, with notable members including Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, and W.E.B. Du Bois, among many others. Today, Alpha Phi Alpha has over 700 chapters worldwide and continues to be a leading organization in the African American community, promoting scholarship, leadership, and service. Oldest Latina Fraternity:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           The oldest Latina fraternity is Lambda Theta Phi (ΛΘΦ), founded on December 1, 1975, at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. It was established by 13 Latinx students who sought to create an organization that would promote brotherhood, scholarship, and community service, as well as celebrate and empower Latinx culture and heritage. Oldest Multi-culture Sorority:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     A multicultural membership that has grown beyond its original Hispanic-Latino origins Sigma Lambda Beta has also developed two 501(c)(3) nonprofits, the Sigma Lambda Beta Education Foundation and the Omega Fund ¹.The largest multicultural sorority is Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (ΣΓΡ), founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was established by seven African American women who sought to create an organization that would promote sisterhood, academic excellence, and community service, without regard to race, creed, or color. Sigma Gamma Rho has over 500 chapters worldwide, with members from diverse backgrounds, including African American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, Native American, and other ethnicities. The sorority is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).

Healthcare, like cardiology, is very important in communities because it helps people stay healthy and live longer lives. Cardiology focuses on the heart and blood vessels, which are crucial for our bodies to work properly. Doctors in cardiology help prevent and treat problems like heart disease and high blood pressure. By having good cardiology care in a community, people can get regular check-ups and tests to catch problems early. This means they can get treatment sooner, which often leads to better outcomes and healthier lives. Access to cardiology also helps communities grow stronger because healthy people can work, go to school, and enjoy life without being held back by health issues.

The owner of Phoenix Mystery Castle wants to demolish it
Located in the foothills of South Mountain Park, it was built in the 1930s by Boyce Luther Gulley who, like a whole lot of other people, moved to Phoenix about 100 years ago to recover from tuberculosis. Once he had, he set about building a castle for his young daughter, Mary Lou.
Gulley built the sprawling 18-room residence from stone, adobe, and a huge pile of found objects. Its façade is studded with pieces of old automobiles and telephone poles that jut from below its roofline. There’s a fence made from rail tracks salvaged from a shuttered coal mine. The castle has its own chapel and, like any good castle, a dungeon. All these years later, it’s a work in progress: Plumbing and electricity were added in the early 1990s, and some of the castle’s rooms remain unfinished.
In spite of that, Mary Lou and her mother moved into the castle after Boyce Gulley died in 1945. The women began offering tours. A LIFE Magazine article of the time referred to the building as a “fairy tale dream house.”
But no dream house is safe in Maricopa County, where prestigious and interesting buildings are routinely targeted for destruction. This time, the call is coming from inside the castle: In November 2023, a full demolition permit was requested by Rita Spears, the president of the Mystery Castle Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has maintained the castle since Mary Lou’s death in 2010. The permit was reportedly denied for one year by the Phoenix Historic Preservation Office. Which means Mystery Castle could be demolished as early as this coming November — unless someone does something to stop it.
