An enchanted place where massive stone sculptures seem to come to life and tell stories full of magic…this is the Park of the Monsters also known as Sacro Bosco ("sacred wood"). Located in Bomarzo, about 40 miles north of Rome, the park is populated by gigantic mythological sculptures, leaning buildings, enigmatic obelisks and bizarre beings that leave anyone who observes them for the first time speechless.
As for why this majestic work was created, many believe it was commissioned in grief after the death of the noble patron's beloved wife Giulia Farnese. In one of the inscriptions in the park reads the phrase Sol per sfogare il core ("just to set the heart free"), which would seem to endorse this hypothesis. In this case, the disturbing sculptures are interpreted as expressions of pain and inner torment.
Sadly abandoned and forgotten for a long time, the park was then restored in the second half of the 20th century by the Bettini family and opened to the public. This Park of Monsters has influenced many artists, writers and filmmakers over the years; among these is Salvador Dalí, who fell in love with it and made a film and a painting inspired by it in the 1950s. One of the park's sculptures bears the inscription "You who enter here, consider everything you see, and then tell me if so many wonders are made for deception or for art." This sentence sums up the charm of a place where art and imagination intertwine, creating a timeless adventure for young and old, and a unique experience for visitors.

Gardens of Bomarzo, Italy Created in the 16th century. Design attributed to Pirro Ligorio, and sculptures to Simone Moschino. During the 19th century, and deep into the 20th, the garden became overgrown and neglected, but after the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí made a short movie about the park and completed a painting actually based on it in the 1950s, the Bettini family implemented a restoration program which lasted throughout the 1970s. Today, the garden, which remains private property, is a major tourist attraction.

Recently I started editing old photos from my trip to Bosco Sacro, a garden in Viterbo ornated by numerous sculptures from the 1540s.
This one in particular it is said to be of Proteus, the greek god of elusive sea change, Poseidon eldest sons, known to be a shapeshifter able to predict the future to whomever was able to capture him.

Bosco Sacro - Fountain of wealth
Benvenuti ragazzi, direi…

By the medieval period, people were starting to sketch out how eclipses happened. Scholars like Johannes Sacro Bosco put the moon between the Sun and the Earth, showing the shadow cone emanating from the Moon. Given that this diagram dates from the 1200s, the Earth is, of course, at the center of the Solar System. I also very much enjoy the little animals he’s put in there to adorn the Moon’s orbit:

Two of the most popular, frequently copied and translated astronomical texts of the Middle Ages were Joannes de Sacro Bosco's Sphaera mundi and Georg von Peurbach's Theoricae novae planetarum. On September 19, Curator Dot Porter will bring out LJS 42, a 16th century commentary on a Hebrew translation of Sphaera mundi, followed by a commentary on a Hebrew translation of Theoricae novae planetarum.
Coffee With A Codex is an informal lunch or coffee time to meet virtually with Kislak curators and talk about one of the manuscripts from Penn's collections. Each week we'll feature a different manuscript and the expertise of one of our curators. Everyone is welcome to attend.
