La Sala del Mappamondo è una delle sale più belle di tutto il Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola.

Palazzo Farnese è riconosciuto come uno dei più importanti monumenti tardo rinascimentali d'Europa. Opera iniziata da Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, Baldassare Peruzzi ma, terminata da Jacopo Barozzi, detto il Vignola nel 1573.

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Viterbo. I infinitely prefer the Romanesque and Gothic to the later Renaissance and Baroque styles. It's always nice to find a good Romanesque arch! The Capitals are especially nice.

At the museum, evidence of continuous occupation in this area since before the Etruscans.

Our B&B in Viterbo. We survived our first experiment with driving in Italy, and managed to find our B&B. After Rome, Viterbo is basically empty and we heard nothing but Italian.

The place we are staying is right next to a church where Prince Henry was assassinated in 1271. Also, there are dogs here. Cesare and Tilly.



First stop after a rest. God it's hot. The museum, Papal Palace and cathedral.

The papal palace is important because this is where the first conclave took place. The pope died, and the Cardinals couldn't pick a new one. So they got locked into one room. Still couldn't decide. So they were given nothing but bread and water. Time continues. Then the church roof was removed so the Cardinals would be exposed to the Holy Spirit (and rain, presumably). They finally decided, after more than 2 years of this. And that's why the Cardinals have to sequester themselves every time now.
