Kingpins show celebrates milestone year with new initiatives, programs, and events in Amsterdam

Kingpins Show, the boutique denim supply chain trade show, will unveil a slate of new initiatives, programs and seminars during its April 24–25 run at SugarFactory in Amsterdam.

This is a milestone year for the trade show, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary as well as its 10th year in Amsterdam. The LYCRA brand, one of Kingpins’ first supporters, will kick things off by sponsoring happy hour at the upcoming Amsterdam show. Additional events to celebrate this dual anniversary will be held later this year.

At the upcoming Amsterdam event, Kingpins will debut several new additions, including:

The Gallery

Kingpins’ Gallery is a new materials trend space featuring the very best fabrics and trims from show exhibitors. The installation is designed to spark creativity and imagination and provide a starting place for attendees to explore new mill and trim products.

Fabric suppliers will showcase a few of their best fabrics among five categories: Manmade, Natural, Performance and Recycled. Swatches will be displayed in an installation that lets visitors touch and feel the fabric to get a sense of the beauty of the textile.

Trim suppliers will display some of their most-iconic products in mood board vignettes or as inventive wearable pieces in a shadow box installation.

The concept for The Gallery is to provide visitors with a space where they can experience exhibitors’ best work with an open mind, free from any influence other than their own inquisitive nature and imagination.

Future Fits Forum

Expanding on a panel discussion held at the New York show in January, Kingpins will launch the Future Fits Forum, led by Michelle Branch, Founder and Creative Director of Markt & Twigs, Inc., the global creative firm specializing in denim messaging.

This two-part initiative includes an installation in The Boxes, Kingpins’ trend and inspiration space, featuring custom garments that explore the evolution of denim fit.

Sponsored by Creora, the Future Fits Forum installation will feature physical garments created by six designers, as well as one digital piece created by an AI designer. To create the pieces, each designer was given two pairs of vintage Levi’s 501 that were rescued from a landfill, as well as new denim fabric made with Creora’s bio-based stretch fiber. The concept is for the designers to take these sustainable materials — a mix of vintage and new — and use their expertise and imagination to envision the next generation of denim fit.

Branch will also moderate a panel featuring four of the designers in the project, Imogen Nulty, Global Director for Scotch & Soda; Danielle Elsener, founder of zero waste system Decode Mfg.; Floyd Rorije, co-creative director of the Gatto collection; and Lucia Rosin, Founder of creative studio Meidea.

Indigo Museum by Arvind

Kingpins has teamed with Arvind to create a museum piece for the denim mill’s Indigo Museum, which celebrates artisans working with denim and indigo. For the first time, an artist has been selected to create a special museum piece to be displayed at the show. The piece, “Birds of a Feather Flock Together,” by Amit Ambalal was made using wire mesh, fabric, resin and indigo.

These new programs join other signature Kingpins initiatives, including Most Sustainable Product, which highlights the latest developments in sustainable materials and processes from Kingpins exhibitors.

Another recent initiative is One Denim, a diverse collection of denim garments made from a single fabrication. One Denim was designed to demonstrate the breadth of designs that can be created from the same fabric.

Kingpins has also been expanding The Boxes, its installation space for creative collaboration. One returning installation is Key Pieces from Inspiring Wardrobes Around the World, a collection of inspirational garments from designers, artists and other members of the global denim community. Kingpins Managing Director & Global Sales Manager Vivian Wang will moderate a panel discussion with some of the creatives who contributed to the installation.

The personel waved at you and greeted you. Once you stepped out of the elevator and arrived to the right floor you walked to the meeting room where your boyfriend was supposed to be.

You were about to knock when the door opened. Kyuhyun got out and smiled.

“Are you here for Yesung?” he asked.

Ryeowook’s scandalous laughter filled your ears and you said goodbye to them after giving a glare.

You entered the room. Yesung was standing up in front of the table, his back facing you. He seemed to not notice someone got in the room. Carefully you hugged him from behind. Yesung jumped a little and his body grew tense, but then he saw your arms wrapped around his waist and your hands entwined.

“Happy anniversary” you said happily.

You broke the hug and Yesung turned around with a slight blush on his cheeks and a smile on his face. You leaned to kiss him softly.

“Happy anniversary” he laughed. He thought it was cute the way you surprised him.

“I have something for you” you handed the paper bag to him.

Yesung found a small journal inside that you made for him, filled with thoughts and pictures both of you took before. Like Yesung you loved keeping different pictures and memories from your vacations, work trips and the most simpler dates at home.

Bakugou had a million different favorite songs. He had an eclectic playlist that when put on shuffle would produce beauties like Work Bitch by Britney and Flowers by the Neighbourhood.

People would ask his favorite song and it would change every time.

And it stayed that way. All throughout high school and college and even into his professional life.

If it had some sort of melody, it was his favorite.

Until he attended a coworker’s anniversary party.

They played cheesy love songs. Some Bakugou was familiar with and some he wasn’t. But all of them had to do with love.

He was kind of getting sick of it by the end of the night. Saw all the smooching and lovey dovey couples dancing past the punch bowl. Couldn’t really stand the sight of every hand having another to hold, except his.

He sat in a chair at a corner table. Letting the couples have their time, staying only as long as he was required to.

“You look as bored as I feel,” a scratchy voice invaded his head space. It pulled his attention from the dance floor to a redhead perched on the table behind him.

“Not a big fan of the music taste,” Bakugou gruffed to the intruder.

“What?!” the Red Head shouted in mock outrage. “Love songs are actually the best genre of music.”

The guys’ head tilted as he explained the significance and the appeal, his lips pulled back in a bright smile. Laughing and making the stupid love songs feel lighter, less weighed down by a societal pressure to have someone to enjoy them with.

“You just need to hear the right one,” the guy said.

He left Bakugou for a minute, trotting over to the DJ and presumably requesting a song.

An upbeat rhythm started as he crossed back through the dance floor, swaying with the tempo. He had a stupid grin on his face, raising his brow in question. He wanted Bakugou to dance with him.

And it’s not like Bakugou was this bitter old man who couldn’t love. He just… never needed to. Never had someone ask him to dance.

And it put a stupid smile on his own face, made him roll his eyes.

But he stood nevertheless.

It was upbeat and happy, and unlike the other love songs that just dragged his mood down.

The song crooned about candy and how their love was so sweet. How they were dying for another taste. And Bakugou swayed with the redhead, put his hands around his shoulders and let the redhead settle his own on Bakugou’s waist. The music flowed through them and he felt happy for the first time that night.

He fell in love with that dance. Heard the redhead’s name and fell in love with it. Danced to love songs and fell in love with them.

And later on, when someone would ask him his favorite song he’d answer truthfully, “the song Kirishima and I danced to when we first met.”

[NEWS] BC Entertainment confirms Taeyong solo comeback with second full album

Today, BC Entertainment surprised fans by confirming Knight’s Taeyong will be releasing his second full-length solo album in December after finishing group promotions. “Taeyong has been working diligently on preparing a new album for fans and we’re happy to announce that he will be making his comeback as a solo artist in December.”

December will mark a year since Taeyong released his first solo album, I’m Young, and will come at the end of another year of busy comeback schedules for Knight. Taeyong has already released music this year through BC Portal and in the form of promoted collaborative single “Erase” at the beginning of the year, but the title track of his new album will be his first promoted solo single since last year.

BC Entertainment also assured fans Taeyong’s injury will not interfere with his solo promotions and that, under the watchful eye of doctors, his recovery is going even better than anticipated. An official date has not been confirmed by BC Entertainment at this time, but they stated the album is in the final stages of preparation and teased it would be released around the anniversary of his debut solo album.

Is This Little Black Box The New Little Black Dress?

QR codes found success during the pandemic when little else did. They replaced paper menus, credit and loyalty cards, and even, guest books. And now, the scan-happy craze is coming for fashion. The little black box is the new little black dress.

Though fashion QR codes were around prior to that, they made news in September when Ganni announced a collaboration with Levi’s, for which the Danish brand reworked the heritage denim label’s signature 501s, among other denim items, and made them available for rent. The idea was that the pieces would get better with wear, with no two people ever getting the same pair of jeans — each one uniquely faded and worn down by the person who rented them last. To share each item’s story, the brands used Near-Field Communication — technology that allows you to transfer information from close distances, like QR codes — in partnership with connected-consumer agency SharpEnd to give renters (who chose to participate) the opportunity to see who’d worn the pieces before them and go behind the scenes.

“By tapping the signature Levi’s back patch with a smartphone, renters can unlock a connected universe of storytelling and information, including videos and exclusive content from the global campaign shoots, style inspiration from friends of the Ganni family, content from previous renters, and much more,” Nicolaj Reffstrup, the founder of Ganni, tells Refinery29. Renters also have the option to leave stories of their own for the next wearer, though it’s not a requirement of renting. Reffstrup, who worked in tech prior to entering the fashion sphere, thinks contactless technology is an essential tool for keeping people connected, especially during the pandemic: “It is an effective way to offer a unique experiential moment to connect with our community and directly link them to our universe.”

Michael Kors seems to agree. For the New York-based designer’s 40th anniversary collection, which debuted in April, the brand reissued 16 iconic ensembles from its archives, worn on the runway by supermodels like Bella Hadid and Alek Wek. Every reissued piece comes fitted with a QR code on the tag, which, when scanned, takes customers back in time to when the piece was first designed and presented. For example, if you were to scan the code on the tag of Hadid’s patent leather red coat, you’d be taken to video footage of Cindy Crawford in the original red coat on the runway at Kors’s spring ‘99 show. 

More often, though, designers are tapping into the power of QR codes to demystify the supply chain. “Through the use of innovative blockchain technology, we can share more on how and where our clothes are made,” Ganni’s Reffstrup says. Soon, he says, renters will be able to access detailed information about the lifecycle of their garments, as well as digital, 360-degree access to global stores and products, simply by tapping their phones on a Ganni item.

Millennial favourite Reformation also jumped on board this year. The Los Angeles-based fashion brand recently teamed up with a blockchain platform called FibreTrace to increase transparency with their customers. Using QR technology, the brand is able to verify each and every step of a garment’s lifecycle. “The benefit of QR codes is that they allow us to easily, directly, and conveniently communicate key information to our customers about their clothing, so they can feel more informed and empowered about their purchasing decisions,” says Reformation’s Chief Sustainability Officer and VP of Operations, Kathleen Talbot. “Using blockchain technology makes our supply chain assurance claims even more automatic and irrefutable, which we see as a huge value across the board.” Like Ganni, the brand initiated the technology with a denim collection. On each pair of jeans from the FibreTrace collection, customers can scan a QR code on the tag and gain full access to their denim’s lifecycle, from “farm to butt,” says Talbot.

The ability to build trust between customers and a brand is what convinced PANGAIA to utilise QR codes in their recent Horizon collection. For the collection, the science-backed fashion collective partnered with EON, a products innovator, to develop Digital Passports for their signature sweatsuits. The QR codes, which are printed on each item’s care label, allow shoppers to unlock the entire lifecycle of their purchase, be it information about the distribution centre it was sent to post-production or tips on how to dispose of the item upon its eventual demise. The codes also function as portals to information on the product’s environmental impact, including data on the carbon and water usage needed to create it. 

According to the brand, QR codes also allow them to update information in real-time; that way, as they develop better and more conscious technologies and products in the future, their customers can immediately be updated. “We are able to layer on information about resale and recycling as we move forward on our own circularity journey,” the collective tells Refinery29. “Our goal is to empower our customers to make the best possible choices.” 

Given that we get so much of our information from QR codes these days, be it the appetizers list or our pre-vaccine forms, it only feels right that we’re starting to learn about our clothes from them, too. Welcome to the future.
