Mee Goreng Monday nights and nothing in the desolate Minimalist Kitchen to eat, not even a packet of Indo Mie Instant Noodles, a trip to see Angie at Sri Pinang is warranted. Uncle requested a Mee Goreng that has a lot of ingredients stripped out; how Angie hates that no doubt. It’s almost vegetarian except for the Lup Cheong. Late post from last Tuesday 7/13/21 after Beyond Van Gogh. Lunch reservations were hard to get at the time we wanted - between 12 - 1 pm but got a table at Fête. Laura hadn’t been before but I had been with my friend and my Dad on other occasions so I know the food is good. We ended up taking home some of our food, but we shared the seared ahi appetizer (really delicious with their aioli dressing), crunchy potatoes (olive oil and Parmesan seasoning were great plus the crunch) and Fête spread which were three spreads (ricotta, smoked egg plant, and muhammara with toasted wheat bread (olive oil on it). I had a Chaz burger with avocado and bacon because sounded good. Plus I rarely eat here so wanted something I hadn’t tried before. Laura had a Chaz burger with bacon but no avocado and a lupcheong fried rice. We joked with the waiter that we ordered too much which we did. Happens when you’re hungry. 😆 I had a plantation iced tea, which was good. And we were full after that. We had to walk a little bit since we parked at a municipal lot, but that was good. 🤙 Also, they make their ice cream in house so good to know. That way just have an appetizer and dessert. 👏 It was a good day of art and food. Thanks to my friend Laura for recommending Beyond Van Gogh and being open to a new place she hadn’t eaten before. Mushroom Claypot Rice
That's the mushroom clay pot rice I did last night. Pumped up with chicken broth and soy sauce braised eggs from my Mother-in-law's kitchen. The recipe is simple enough - 2 cups of rice, 1.5 cups of water. 1 cup of chicken stock. 10 dried chinese shiitake mushrooms that'd been soaked to soften. 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 1.5 tbs of home-made abalone sauce (you can use more oyster sauce too), 2 tbsp dark soy, 1 tbsp light soy, 1 tbsp sesame oil, and 1.5 tbsp of Shaoxing cooking wine. Sprinkle 1 tsp of white pepper powder. Cook the rice in the claypot on medium heat for 10 minutes. Add one or two links of Chinese sausages (lupcheong), cover and continue to cook for another 10 minutes. Remove the sausages, and cook without the cover under the rice is done, and the bottom crispy. Owner of Sri Pinang Angie Kaw is particularly fond of her Spicy Char Bee Hoon, ”chin hot chiak,” she proclaims as you ponder the menu. Birthday Makan at Ipoh Malaysian Cuisine. My tennis mate Denis had a significant birthday. Uncle belanjar him a makan at Ipoh Malaysia Cuisine. As usual, it was Teh Tarik (pulled tea) to lubricate the taste buds. Then 2 entrees: lobak, a Nyonya speciality of minced pork made distinctive with 5-spice, then wrapped in tofu skin before being deep-fried. The dipping sauce is a mix of chilli and hoisin. The second entree is a Malaysian favorite, Otak Otak, a fish custard. Normally wrapped in banana leaf and grilled, it’s fried Ipoh-style. As there were only 2 of us, owner Daphne Toe advised choosing favourites Curry Laksa and Char Kway Teow. The Curry Laksa is cooked from freshly made rempah (spice mix) made lemak with coconut cream, egg noodles, chicken, taupok and beansprouts (which features in many Ipoh-style has dishes as the sprouts from Ipoh is big, fat and crunchy, thanks to the water flowing through the surrounding limestone hills). The Char Kway Teow had wok hei, tasty and varied with Lup Cheong (Chinese sausage), prawn, chicken and of course beansprouts. Denis was presented with cheesecake while we shared Bubur Cha Cha, a porridge of yam, pumpkin, sweet potato, sago pearls, cooked in pandan-flavoured coconut milk. Denis is a professional musician. He and Daphne had meaningful discussions about music and children.
